All my friends love Portishead so fucking much, i have tried for the past couple of weeks to get into them. i respect them tremendously for what they have done as far as popularizing trip hop, but i cant seem to jump on the train. HELP!!! fans please give me some songs to check out that might change my mind.

Try listening to their only two studio albums. "Dummy" and "Portishead" and then the live album at Roseland NY (or better yet the DVD).

Standouts tho are..
Glory Box, Roads, Only You, Humming, Biscuit, All Mine, It's A Fire, and Mysterons...
damn, I listed almost half of their discography.

If you don't enjoy the song "Glory Box", there's no hope.

I really think there is no hope anyway.

You must just listen, you dont need people to tell you what songs are good. Just listen, if you dont like, then you dont like, someone telling you Glory Box, Sour Times, Mourning Air is good doesnt change the fact that you have already listened to them and dont like them.

Scoop, I think these were the singles from the first album...

Numb
Sour Times
Glory Box

It was never a single, but I think "It Could Be Sweet" is the greatest song ever.

That song reminds me of Sade for some reason. Great track too!

Don't listen to either of their studio albums if you're trying to figure out why they're amazing. Just listen to tracks 1-4 on the Roseland live album. If that doesn't convince you, you're the problem.

Speaking of Portishead, is anyone else scared by the fact that they didn't play All Mine at ATP? If they don't play that at Coach it will be a little saddening. I want to hear that shit drop so bad.

I don't high five. I don't want to be capable of description as a "high-fiving white guy." Ever.

Then how do you celebrate with your fellow man?... A chest bump!? Cause, that's worse... O.o

I only high-five if it's funny to do so. Otherwise celebration can be expressed just fine without touching.

Then let's celebrate our correlating desires without touching! =D

If they play "Sour Times" live, I hope they play the album version because when I saw them live and on the Roseland CD, they played a remix. Ick.

If you don't like them, don't force yourself to....be a leader not a follower!

Yet, this thread has inspired me to listen to the Portishead albums...I need to get the Live at Roseland album. I was at that concert....life changing!

I bought their live cd this weekend. and i did not like the way it sounded as much as the recordings.

If you don't like it, then that's that. I don't like olives so I'm not gonna keep trying different kinds. I just don't like them. Portishead on the other hand, I fell in love with completely after the first 5 seconds of the first song on "Portishead". "All mine" just sealed the deal for sure. If you really wanna try, don't force it. just add it to your media player and see how the songs fit you as they play randomly. that's what i do.

Ya, my basic rule of thumb is that if you aren't slightly erect when that guitar solo about halfway through the song kicks in...then there's no hope.

"Mysterons" off the live album was the song that made me grateful to have picked up the CD. "Wandering Star" and "Roads" have since overtaken slots #1 and 2 for my favorite Portishead songs, though it took a while. I picked up the Roseland NYC CD first so that's the Portishead sound I was accustomed to and it took several listens before I could appreciate the studio albums the way they deserved.
If it hasn't clicked with you yet, Failed State, I would argue for still trying, maybe just not right now. I picked up Massive Attack's Mezzanine and didn't care for it much at first but the friend who recommended it was so insistent that it was terrific that I kept returning to it every few months. Finally I "got" it and now rank it among my favorite CDs ever (and have since gotten everything else that Massive Attack has produced). So there's something to be said for persistence with a band that you suspect warrants not being quickly dismissed, and that is certainly the case for Portishead.

you know whats weird. I just watched the Roseland DVD and sour times is NOT the version on the album! its another more upbeat mix not scary beth screaming. so i wonder where they pulled that one from

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the live CD missing some songs from that DVD?
Just sayin'.
I could check this, but I'll let someone else do it.

The Roseland DVD is definantly worth picking up.
Of course, don't expect a full orchestra to with them at Coachella (but how sweet would that be??)
