View Full Version : When all is said and done, how much do you spend for Coachella weekend?

Just curious of how much, give or take, Coachella vets spend all together for the weekend (flights, cab, festival tickets, hotel/house rental/camping, food, drinks, etc).

On a shoe string budget, it can be roughly 7 to 800, right?

Just wanna get an idea how others made out :)

On a shoe string budget, it can be roughly 7 to 800, right?

You could probably pull that off if you're sharing a room with someone or camping, but it's usually closer to $1000. The costs have gone up since the 3rd day was added.

About the only thing I spend that weekend is alot of energy enjoying the festival. (Sure is nice living on the edge of the festival grounds.)

Tickets $199 presale or close to $300 regular price.
Camping $40-50 after servoce charges.
Gas in SUV from Phoenix and back = $85 or so
Spending cash = Aprox. $50-$70 a day

So about $650 - $700 on the high end. or $500 on the low end.

I spent $1000 last year and that covered:

Flight
3 day pass
camping
rental car for 5 days (split 2 ways)
2 t-shirts and a poster
and plenty of food and water

captncrzy
01-08-2008, 06:41 AM
This is actually a good opportunity to break this down...

Gas (split 4 ways) about $20?
Pass $199 presale
Hotel room $150/night for three nights / 4 = $120
According to Rachel Ray, you can eat on $40 a day...but my hotel has free breakfast, so I'm going to say $30 a day for food and tons of water...$90
Vodka mini bottles to bring in: $20

That brings me to $450 with no merchandise.

When I lived in KC -

- $350 = 300 to 400 round trip flight into PS, we'll say 350$
- $25 round trip for bus, but of the 4 trips (2 to, 2 back) I only rode it once.
- $250 = 165 + 35 + 50 for 2005 ticket + camping price (+ticketmaster)
- $30 = 15 * 2 for 1.5 meals a day in venue
- $63 = 7 * 4.5 * 2 for beer in venue
- $25 = random purchases for campground (water, soda, snacks, bathroom stuff, etc)
- < $750 = total

When I moved to Yuma -

- $50 = tank of gas for round trip of driving
- ~$350 = 250+45+50 for 2007 ticket + camping + ticketmaster
- $45 for 1.5 meals a day in venue
- $100 for beer in venue
- $25 = random purchases for campground
- < $575 = total

I've never had a problem drinking the fountain water so water costs me 2 bucks a day. Basically negligible. I don't count 2006 because that year I went with someone and purchases weren't observed. Also, I booked everything 3 weeks before the show in 2004 because I was only really dreaming of going but realized I had the money for it. I think I spent over a grand on tickets and getting there. Add tent, food, drinks, etc and it was probably 1200-1300. Meh.

I spent well over $1500 on my road trip, had to rent a van, drive 4000 miles, tickets, merchandise, hotels, and food. (I also purchased the tickets for me and my friends and rented the van, but they paid me back. Thats almost $2k right there) It was completely and totally worth it, but this year I cant afford it, so I am going to Bonnaroo which ends up being much much cheaper.

I live in LA which makes it cheaper but I don't own a car, so I have to rent one. Also, I had hardly any camping stuff so I had to buy. And I WILL be buying a f'ng canopy this year. My brother flew in from Chicago, so last year I bought the concert tickets for him.

My 2007 expenses
saturday tickets and camping 306 (2 people)
friday tickets 207 (2 people)
*tent and camping stuff 137
rental car and gas 150
cash (food, booze, merch, misc) 300
----------------------------------
$1100

*the only camping item I had was a sleeping bag, so I had to buy the basics
tent 30
cooler 25
tent fans 30

My 2008 anticipated expenses

tickets and camping 350 (one person)
rental car and gas 150
cash 300
camping stuff (food and canopy) 125
------------------------------
$925

Expensive but soooooo worth it.

She also tips like my greatgrandmother. Really lady, you just gave someone 63 cents? Wipe that shit-eating grin off your deformed face and go do some lunges.

Also I spent around $500, Tickets, travel, house and keg.

JustSteve
01-12-2008, 01:32 PM
admission = free
hotel = motel 6 at ~$80/night, divided by a few people
drinks = bottle of vodka and some soda $20, bring it inside the venue
gas = free, goes on company card
food = $15-$20/day

so that's about $160 for the weekend.

Aa0275
01-13-2008, 01:00 AM
I spent somewhere in the $1,600-$2,000 range...but that was for..
-$700Two threedays passes+2 camping at the full $350 price ( I bought one as a gift...most exspendsive gift i ever bought.)
-$350 airfare from texas for one
-$50 bus pass to and from La (DON'T DO THIS..SERIOUSLY, IT WAS A NIGHTMARE)
-$100 for a hotel in oceanside the night before camping began
-$100 (about) for food the entire trip
-$200 for supplies and stuff to use during the trip (tent, sunscreen, etc.)
and more..but I dont remember really.
It definately could of been cheaper..but it was my first coachella and I had the money..so whatever. I could of easily done the trip for $1000 had I not bought my friend a ticket..and spared him money a lot of the times..gr

2007:
$333 payment for a 3 day pass, and shipping to and from Canada, global postal money order fee, etc
$50 camping
$100 new sneakers, sunblock, batteries, shorts, travel-sized toiletries, space blanket, snacks
$175 on food and drink, t-shirt, CSS CD, tips, benadryl, my share of the gas money, a beer for the underager in our group (I somehow spent more than this in 05 and 06)
$50 medication for post-Coachella illness

I still have a $120 medical bill to pay. Never actually received it, but the collection agencies are probably hounding my old address. I should look into this.

Aa0275, you're so right about taking the bus to and from LA. It's awful. The LA Greyhound station is hell on earth, and the Indio station is 5 miles away from the venue. Did you have any luck getting a ride or cab to the bus station Monday morning? At least the bus I rode to Coachella was relatively clean.

What really sucked was taking the bus back to LA in 2006. I arrived in the middle of some immigration protest, and the street where I caught my local bus back home was blocked off, so I had to wander around Hell carrying around all my clothes and camping gear after an exhausting weekend for over an hour until I found a bus stop with a destination I actually recognized.

Well, it's a good story actually. We had to leave Coachella right after Rage last year, so we packed up all our things and had to walk VERY far with really heavy stuff to the taxi drop off area. That alone was horrible. Then we had to hail a cab to take us about 3 miles to the Indio bus station. when we got there, there were SOOO many people there. more tickets than actual room on the bus, so we had to wait for more buses to come. our bus was supposed to be at 5 am, and we didnt get on one til 7am, and we had to catch a flight at noon at LAX. We finally got to LA, and tried to hail a cab there to get to LAX, some random dude offered us a ride (HUGE MISTAKE), and he ended up being fucked up on crack (100% serious) and then showed us his prison card on the way. It was by far the scariest moment of my life, but we made it alive.

I made it a tradition to save all year so when Coachella comes around money is no problem. Kind of like saving for Christmas. Come to think of it Coachella is like Christmas except without a big fat man in a red suit asking you to sit on his lap asking what he can give you.

I think between tickets/camping permits, gas (I drive from Texas.. 24 hours ain't bad w/ 3 or 4 people), and then food/water for the weekend I spent around $1000.. I think gas and the tickets accounted for about 75% of that. I remember in 2006 one of the people going with us fucked up and was BROKE at the point we departed Austin so I had to pay his share and food, etc.. which was entirely unplanned.

I also had to pay for his cigarettes, and at $94.99 per pack it became quite costly.

Honestly I think I spent more at SXSW and that's in my home town =/

We spent alot less last year than we did in 06. I budgeted $1000 but came home with like $300 or something.

What was weird to me was that in 06 we didnt bring any food and were practically starving the whole weekend then in 07 we brought a ton of food and didnt eat any of it. So I dont know how its gonna work this year.

Haha, yeah. I am pretty sure the LA bus station is the shadiest place on earth.

I've taken rides from strangers before...once on Hollywood Blvd at almost 1am (was waiting for the last bus back to school that never came) and once in San Diego (a friend and I were stalking Radiohead and another stalker offered us a ride back to our hotel afterwards). But those were okay because I'm a man and the rides were from women, so what can they really do to me, lol.

I remember waiting in line for the Arcade Fire once and this guy wanted me to go into his car and play my Arcade Fire CD for him. Yikes.

in years past it's been about 1000 bucks. but we're adding on a san fran/yosemite trip after coachella and I expect to tack on another 500 to that.
truth be told, at least 300 goes to shopping in LA. I spent about 150-200 at H&M last year(they don't have those in FL)and another 250ish between drinking at the hermosa pier and shopping/drinking at the santa monica citywalk thingy.

it could end up being 2,000 this year but I know it'll be worth it on account of the fun I'll have.

when coming from Mexico, northeast:

3-day pass including camping 350 usd
airplane $200 usd to Tijuana (low fare airline)
car rental in sandiego/gas up to $400 usd

so this may be up to $1,100 usd...

01-20-2008, 04:31 PM
I usually set aside a minimum of $800. 3day pass, camping pass, gas to and from Ventura, CA. Also for food, drinks, party favors :), and impulse shopping at the coachella vendors (I always buy a sweatshirt there), and money to tide me over for the following five days of recovery after the festival. I usually have a few buck left over, but I'd rather have more cash than I need than less. I usually start saving my Coachella money in a seperate account starting in November. All my friends think I'm a little crazy setting money aside that early, but then they're always the ones asking to borrow money during the festival :)

Aa0275

man, i never really realized how much people outside of california spend on coachella.

Yeah..coming from Texas was pricey..I can't even imagine how much some of the people I met at coachella spent (I.e...the people I met from austrailia and europe and so on). We do have Austin City Limits here..for that I only spent..
$150-3 day ticket
$15 - gas
$50- food
$200-random shopping I could of done without

So that was dramatically cheaper than my $1700 Coachella splurge. For Voodoo fest..I didn't spent over $300-$350.

if you are camping and driving down, I'd guess about $300 exclusive of tickets - gas, food, miscellaneous.

My expenses this year are crazy high because I'm paying 100% of housing costs for me and my gf - so closer to $900-1000 not including tix ($450 4 days house rental + $200 flight to/from SF + $50-75 taxi's to/from airport + $200ish for food/drink/merch, etc)

I guess all told just over a grand. I don't really think of money spent on smokes, food, etc. as "Coachella expenses", since I would be eating at home, and food isn't really that much over normal cost of eating out. Basically, ~300 for tickets, another 300 for plane tickets, 150 for camping related expenditures, and the rest is merch, gatorade, and beer.
