I'm sure there were some great acts before Daft Punk. Didn't Blonde Redhead and LCD play that day?
Lolla rumors won't kick in until at least a month after the Coachella lineup hits. It will give us an idea as to what bands will be the festival whores of 2008. Seriously, I think Peter Bjorn & John, LCD Soundsystem, Blonde Redhead, Lily Allen, Amy Methhouse, CSS, etc played every single festival last year.
Oh hell, I'll just start rumors right now. Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Weezer, Beck, A Tribe Called Quest to headline.

Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza were really fuckin impressive, but Daft Punk in Chicago were really fuckin mindblowing!
Top 5 acts of Lolla 2007:
1. Daft Punk
2. Iggy Pop and the Stooges
3. Pearl Jam
4. snow patrol
5. modest mouse
I have no plans on ever going back to Lollapalooza though. The whole corporate shit in your face 24/3 was annoying, the distance from the "AT&T" to the "BudLight" stage was such a bitch. The lineup is far from impressive, and the scheduling is just ridiculous.

Good. The great city of Chicago doesn't want trash like you stinking up the place.
As far as the lineup goes, well you had:
Silversun Pickups
Pearl Jam
Daft Punk
Muse
My Morning Jacket
Interpol
Kings of Leon
The Black Keys
LCD
Clap Your Hands
Polyphonic Spree
Blonde Redhead
Pete Yorn
STS9
Stephen Marley
Regina Spektor
Yeah Yeah Yeah's
Rodrigo y Gabriela
The Annuals
!!!
For me, that lineup rivals any festival I have witnessed or heard of.

Really? Radiohead for lolla 08?
While Lolla is corporate as fuck, it's in the middle of a city and therefore people wouldn't have to drive as much, and Radiohead is really falling for that An Inconvenient Truth anti-carbon stuff. I'm guessing they do Sasquatch because it's green and either Lollapalooza or Austin City Limits, probably the latter since Texas never gets any Radiohead love. I know people say that Sasquatch isn't big enough for Radiohead and The Cure, but both headlined Benicassim in 2002, and the capacity there is only 30,000.
Representatives for Radiohead were on-site at Lolla 2006 scoping out the site, if that means anything.

I agree with you that there were more good bands at Lollapalooza than just Daft Punk, but it doesn't rival Coachella if there are just 2 bands on that list who haven't played Coachella before (and even then, Pearl Jam's the only real "get") and Coachella has dozens who haven't played Lollapalooza. Even if you don't like Bjork, Jarvis Cocker, Air, Soulwax, Hot Chip, Jesus and Mary Chain, Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, MSTRKRFT, or Rage Against the Machine, you've gotta admit that those unique acts alone set Coachella far apart from Lolla.

This isn't about Lolla v. Coachella. The poster said that lolla's lineup sucked. Plain and simple, it did not. Please stop being so hyper-sensitive.
But if you want to get technical, Lolla was around long before Coachella was, so your theory above holds no water.

Since you apparently didn't notice, my response addressed the last line of your previous post: "For me, that lineup rivals any festival I have witnessed or heard of." I was pointing out that several of the bands on the Lolla lineup had already been at Coachella, most of them in 2007 and many in 2006 when it would've been a bigger deal (such as Daft Punk & Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Basically, of the list you provided, Pearl Jam and the Annuals were the only acts who hadn't played Coachella; the much longer and more esteemed list that I provided (Jarvis Cocker, RATM, et al.) were all acts who hadn't played Lolla in recent years. I realize that wasn't necessary since I agreed with your refutation of the assessment that Lolla's lineup sucked 'cause yeah, it certainly didn't.

To all of these people who always says such and such a band was at Coachella first, it always makes me think that the person who says it is a fucking idiot. Coachella happens before Lolla, you are a fucking genius. If a band plays Lolla 2007 and then Coachella 2008, did Lolla get the band first and therefore is better than Coachella? Get your head out of your ass and appreciate the fact that you have the fucking opportunity to go to multiple festivals. Lolla is becoming a great festival.
And yes, Radiohead will be at Lolla thins year along with Foo Fighters, Jay Z, Nine Inch Nails, and a bunch of other cool bands that will probably also be cool to see at Coachella

Dont be fuckin wack man. Ya, Lollapalooza had some good/great acts, I had tons of fun over the 3 days. But, rivals any festival you've ever witnessed before? Have you seen the Pukkelpop 2007 lineup? That destroyed any festival in 2007 without a doubt. The scheduling at Lollapalooza made me miss tons of acts that I thought I would have been able to see, the walk is no Gobi to the Mojave. and the gigs on the street were just so uncomfortable to watch. I like Chicago, and Lollapalooza 2007 was great, but overall, Ill take another festival without as much corporate whoring and set conflicts, especially if im flying all the way to Chicago for it.

Based on the people I've known from Chicago, I'm pretty sure Lolla is full of closet homos who go around acting shy and pretending to innocently make out with cocks.

I did see Pukkelpop's lineup, and although Arcade Fire carries heavy weight for me, there were more bands I wanted to see at Lolla. Its all a matter of opinion, and both of ours mean shit.
You said the lineup at lolla was "far from impressive". I was pointing out that I thought that was a very incorrect statement.

I enjoyed Lolla. I dont think the lineup was impressive though, had some impressive bands...but overall, there were only a few acts each day that I was really excited about seeing. I wish I went to the Virgin Festival in Balt instead. Daft Punk in Chicago was the best show of 2007 for me though.

I slept in the Sahara tent this past year all three days (almost 2 hours on one the days). I mean what else was there to do? Got in the fields at 11, and music didn't start til like 2pm on one of the days almost.

Lolla's biggest problem is they don't go for any electronic music or set aside a tent/stage strictly for DJ's. They're in Chicago, HOME of house....there are HUNDREDS of DJ's who they could get to play....and Detroit is just up the road, Birth place of Techno...tons of DJs there too....why they don't do this? No idea. I mean sure, some of those DJs play the area all the time, but still...to be in chicago, holding a major festival and to show no love towards that music...weak.

the whole way they do set times, those one hour time blocks on each stage which are staggered and opposite of other stages is just stupid...band gets done on stage 1, so now run across to field to stage 2 for next band....then run back to stage 1 for next band...totally dumb. Give props to Coachella for having music constantly on all stages almost.

Yeah, I was hoping for them to get good techno djs from Detroit like Atkins, Derrick May or Jeff Mills, but never happened. Even James Zabiela was in Chicago that weekend playing in some club.
I guess after the Daft Punk show, they realized it's not all about alternative rock bands, and hopefully they'll get some good electronic acts for this year.

radiohead performed in Chicago I want to say in 2001. I also want to say in Grant park. All I remember was this being all over the news because they were concerned with a heatwave at the time and werent sure if the show was going to go on.
Probably the real reason behind 86ing a radiohead show was because the mayor is pushing this new field for concert shows and radiohead said no thanks.

That's a rather good fake lineup...I would attend in a heartbeat. But to make it more believable, Depeche Mode would have to be a Sunday headliner, and not a mere Friday-night co-headliner. So I guess replace them with The Chemical Bros as a Friday night co-headliner and Arcade Fire with a band that is actually going to be touring at the time, and this would be somewhat realistic. Although still too optimistic...the Postal Service? Keep dreaming.

the way they schedule it no one plays at the same time if the stages are next to each other, like Mainstage and Myspace stage... like last year, LCD played the myspace stage which is right on the same field as the main stage while they were setting up for Daft Punk, and then when LCD were done, Daft Punk started...they do it like that all weekend long... and the bud light stage and adidas stage have nothing going at the same time... Kids stage never has anything loud... mindfield is a total bullshit stage... there is another small one that doesnt bleed anywhere either....and the street stages are far enough away from each other, no bleeding.

Right, because every festival headliner is always currently relevant and always gives amazing performances. There's a difference between "could" and "should". Depeche Mode could be the main headliner, but should they? After that Coachella performance, Imma say no.
Pearl Jam and RHCP haven't been good in a decade or so, either, yet there they were at Lollapalooza on Sunday night.

02-03-2008, 01:14 AM
Did I say good? I didn't say good. I said current. But they also weren't any good at Coachella. But either way, they wouldn't close the festival, just like they didn't fucking close Coachella. Know why? Cause they're not relevant enough to be the big headliner for a large festival. It would be a weak cumshot no matter what.

Im with you on this one that they were a letdown, but talk to all the crazy DM fans and they feel that they were the s**t, cause thats all they know. Thats why I left early to go to DP and get a decent spot. They only difference bewteen the coachella set and the 2 times I had seen them 6 months before was the full stage production and it it was underwhelming.

You haven't talked to very many people then. I only caught a couple songs (wandered over when I realized the Sahara wasn't filling up during Audio Bullys and that I'd still be able to get a good spot for Daft Punk) so I can't comment on the quality of the performance, but my girlfriend, who's a huge DM fan, said they were kind of flat that night. She cites the lack of energy from the crowd as a big reason why they underwhelmed and said they were incredible in Las Vegas the following night, but neither she nor the friends she saw them with would say DM were "great" at Coachella.

I didn't think they were horrible. I figure that at least one festival will get Coldplay, and Lolla seemingly presents itself as the most mainstream non-completely-douche festival out of the main festivals (i.e. Coachella, Bonnaroo, SXSW, ACL, APW, etc.).

I've been following them long enough to predict this. Every summer, for the past few years, they have done the same thing: Play festivals in Europe.
The next time they hit the states, it will be a tour about the size of the chemical brothers' most recent tour.

from what I remember, yes. I know that when Prodigy toured in 06, here where the dates:
in March
20 - The Congress Theatre , Chicago - USA
21 - The Kool Haus , Toronto - Canada
22 - Nokia Theatre , New York City - USA
23 - Nation , Washington DC - USA
25 - Ultra Music Festival , Miami - USA
27 - Winter Music Conference , Miami - USA
and in November
24 - The Fillmore , San Francisco - USA
25 - RokOut Festival , San Bernardino - USA
I was at the DC show, and it was sold out. Venue held about 2,000 people.
also, this was recently taken from the prodigy's official website:
"As you know the Prodigy have a new album on the way and with a new album they have decided to have a new look website! So with effect from Wednesday 27th February this site will make way for a brand new one. There will a short period before the new one is live but don't worry they will put any news and information on both their myspace and facebook pages to keep you up to date. See you on the other side!!!!"

I know a lot of Coachella folk are anti-Lolla, and it's nowhere near the experience as Coachella, but look at last year's headliners (Daft, Muse, PJ). This year, that would own every U.S. lineup (comparing headliners).

I can't find any great deals on hotels very close to Grant Park (e.g Congress Plaza Hotel, its average per night rate is $175 + tax for 4 days ($820 total) / last year at this time Best Western Grant Park was $400 including tax etc for 4 nights).

Yeah, last year I booked the Whitehall for $169/day before they announced the lineup, but I ended splitting room with some other people at the Congress Plaza which was a nice deal by the way. I had read horrible reviews about the Congress but when I got there it wasn't that bad, or perhaps we got lucky and got a good room. Anyway, if I go this year I'll probably do the same.

YOU LUCKY MOTHERFUCKERS!
From the Chicago Tribune...
Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are expected to headline the fourth incarnation of Lollapalooza in Grant Park Aug. 1-3.
Promoters won’t make the lineup official for a few more weeks, but industry sources have confirmed that Radiohead has been booked as the centerpiece of the festival. The British quintet still raves about the experience they had in 2001 when they headlined a rare outdoor show at Hutchinson Field (Tribune file photo at left), on the South end of Grant Park. The band is expected to perform at the same location this year.
In addition, Nine Inch Nails will play its first Chicago show in several years, following the release of its 2007 album, “Year Zero,” and the four-volume “Ghosts,” made available a few days ago on the nin.com Web site.
At least one other major headliner and about 100 more artists and bands are expected to be announced for the three-day festival next month.

Organizer of Pemberton event ‘confident’; Petty, Coldplay among possible acts for ’08
By
Reporter
Jennifer Miller
jmiller@whistlerquestion.com
Shane Bourbonnais is keeping his calendar clear for the end of July because there’s a good chance he’ll be hosting musicians such as Tom Petty and members of Coldplay in Pemberton during a three-day music festival.
Bourbonnais is president of touring and business development for Live Nation, the largest producer of concerts worldwide, and every year in July he takes a fishing trip to Langara Island. But as of Monday (Feb. 25) he hadn’t sent his registration in for the 2008 trip because — pending one key approval — he’ll likely be busy during that time with a European-style music festival in his hometown of Pemberton.
“I feel confident that we’re going to get the news we’re looking for and build an incredible event,” Bourbonnais said. “We’ve just got this one last approval that we need and if that one comes favourably we’ll be coming to Pemberton… this summer.”
Next week, Bourbonnais will attend a meeting to discuss the final approval needed to announce firm dates and a location for a festival this summer, and Bourbonnais said he hopes to be able to make an announcement in the next two weeks that the festival is a go.
He declined to provide specific information about the approval that’s needed.
“We’re starting to plan that we’re producing the festival,” he said. “It will be incredible.”
When the potential for a music festival in Pemberton was first made public last October, Coldplay was named as a possible headliner. Bourbonnais said this week that Coldplay is “still online” and Tom Petty is seriously considering coming.
“Hopefully he’s still available when we get the approval,” he said. “But we feel good that even if it’s not those acts, we’ll have big enough acts.”
He said summer 2008 is set to be one of the best seasons in the past five years for big-name bands and artists that are planning tours.
Live Nation is looking to put together a three-day European-style music festival complete with on-site camping, multiple stages, vendors, concessions and “a real, true festival spirit,” Bourbonnais said.
If the key approval comes through, there is still a lot of work to do to make the festival a reality this year. Multiple permits must be received and further dialogue must take place with the Ministry of Transportation on highway travel to and from the festival.
But Bourbonnais said he’s not worried about not having enough time to organize something for this July and that many of the permit processes were initiated as early as last November.
He also said all the bodies Live Nation is working with — RCMP, Squamish Lillooet Regional District, Village of Pemberton, Pemberton Chamber of Commerce and others — have been helpful and cooperative so far. The support from the Pemberton community in general has been “incredible,” he said.
While a festival in 2008 looks promising, Bourbonnais said if something happens to delay the plans, Live Nation will likely continue to pursue a large-scale festival in Pemberton in 2009.
“If there’s a problem, we have all the infrastructure built for ’09,” he said.
Back in October Bourbonnais told The Question that Live Nation was also considering a couple of alternate locations in eastern Canada for a multi-day festival.
He said this week that while the other locations are technically still in the running the necessary support and approvals aren’t falling into place as smoothly as they are in Pemberton.
“We’re heavily favouring the Pemberton site for sure,” Bourbonnais said. “The community has been incredible."

the vibe is awful. you can tell a lot of the crowd doesn't care that much about music. major of meat head, frat boy, midwest scene. seems like a lot of people were there just because they didn't have anything to do that weekend. lot of a sound bleed between the stages and in the worst ways, like having a local/small band stage right behind the same stage LCD Soundsystem played... major wtfs.
