DIOYY, on the budlight stage...once again sound fucked up! Set not nearly as good as at coachella...last 2 songs ROCKED!! ("with a heavy heart" and "we are rockstars")
MGMT MY GOD there had to be at least 30k people there, the boys were much more comfortable than they were at chella...a bit of banter, seemed high as kites and that made it funny....set was great! Loved at the end of Kids three of them just fucking around on the keyboards and making noise.

damn... who took that pic?
paulb
08-02-2008, 09:21 PM
No, Rage was a little bit different than at Coachella... I prefered Coachella's set and audience, but at this show they did Ashes in the Fall, they had to stop the set a few times, cause shit was hectic up front... It was a fairly typical set though, Opening up with Testify, Bulls on Parade, People of the sun, bombtrack, know your enemy, bullet in your head, guerilla radio, calm like a bomb, ashes in the fall, sleep now in the fire, freedom and killing in the name of...
Great news for some people, Uffie finally busted out Robot Oeuf, and it kicked ass... hehe. Her set was def 5x better than her awful Coachella set. She had a live band this time, and some distorted bass helped.
Today was pretty good times, wasnt as hot... still crowded though. Saw Spank Rock do my fav song, Bump.... Caught some Battles and saw them play Atlas... it was the drummers Bday. Brand New seemed very pissed off at the Rage audience they had to play for.... they kept saying how we should be seeing EITS and then saying "this next song is called Bombtrack", then broke his guitar and ended their set 15min early...
Also caught some Perry on the Perry stage, and saw Slash come out and do Mountain Song and Jane Says... that was pretty cool, lots of sound issues, no mics worked during Jane Says, so it was just Slash playing the guitar and the audience singing along to Perry mouthin the words.
I wonder whats gonna happen with NIN tomorrow...

Also, the coolest part about going to the festival everyday (at least for me, because I take the train in) is I get to go past one of most filmed areas in latest batman movie Dark Knight. The Chicago board of trade building (which is what i got past every day) is the same place where Batman does that Motorcycle flip off the wall after he flips the Semi Truck Joker was in. And then another scene was the one where commissioner pretends he gets shot. Kinda geeky, but cool...

No, it was just 3 musicians from NYC playing with her, saying they had rehearsed for 2 days before the show... No Ed Banger crew though, or even Feadz... She was fairly decent... of course nothing amazing, but compaired to the Coachella set, lots better. Robot Oeuf was the highlight of her set, the beat sounded good and so did the distorted bass.

I went with Battles over Broken Social Scene. I'm not a huge fan of the BSS Presents stuff and I feel like I'd be disappointed cuz it was only 7 people instead of the full lineup. They spoiled me in 06. Battles was definitely amazing though.

from the chicago sun times: (obviosuly not a big RATM fan)
For the first time, the festival sold out Friday and Saturday with what promoters said was a crowd of 75,000 per day. Friday night, all of the concertgoers filled Hutchinson Field to see headliners Radiohead, who played unopposed. Saturday night, the crowd was divided between hometown heroes Wilco headlining in the northern end of the park, and Rage Against the Machine in the south.
But the latter definitely caused the biggest scene the new Grant Park Lollapalooza has witnessed in the last four years.
Within the first three songs, vocalist Zack de la Rocha was urging the crowd to calm down and “please take four, five, six steps back,” in between railing at “the cops and f---ed-up politicians.” Within four songs, security was reporting two fans forcibly ejected, one of them riding away in a squad car, and emergency personnel were treating numerous people who passed out in the heat during the rush toward the stage.
Then, a little more than half an hour into the set, a crowd that festival security personnel and witnesses estimated as ranging between 500 and 2,000 people rushed a guarded access gate on Columbus Drive near Balbo Drive to gain admittance. These fans had been listening to the show from the grass across Columbus Drive until someone led the charge and others followed, and the sudden rush was only stopped when a dozen Chicago Police officers arrived on horseback.
Police then proceeded to close Columbus Drive, though officers onsite declined to comment. Lollapalooza promoters could not be found for comment Saturday night.
Despite the chaos, it all seemed a little forced and predictable. Rage Against the Machine is a nostalgia act in 2008, and its fans were simply partying like it was 1993. As in the past, the most genuinely revolutionary thing about the band was Libertyville-bred guitarist Tom Morello, who miraculously mimicked the sounds of scratching turntables, dropping bombs and wailing sirens with six strings and a guitar pick, even though he sounds much more relevant today in his acoustic activist guise as the Nightwatchman.
While all of this was happening in the southern end of Grant Park, Jeff Tweedy and his band mates in Wilco delivered as strong a performance as they ever have while wearing outlandishly colorful Nudie suits. Still, it was slightly disappointing for the fact that Sen. Barack Obama did not appear.
The musicians are ardent supporters and have done several fundraisers for the Democratic Presidential candidate, and rumors swirled over the last two weeks that he might drop by. Campaign officials finally quashed that possibility late Saturday afternoon, and it probably was a strategic move, given the recent criticism from Sen. John McCain that Obama is more of a celebrity or a rock star than a qualified leader.
On Friday, the sound during Radiohead’s set was as strong as I’ve heard from the New Millennial Pink Floyd in concert, and bandleader Thom Yorke was in good voice — or at least as good as his serpentine warbling gets — despite an illness earlier this week forced the cancellation of what was to have been a surprise charity gig at the Chicago Theatre on Thursday.
The British art-rockers did their best to create an enveloping modern psychedelic mind-warp with the otherworldly guitars and synthesizer burbles of Jonny Greenwood and Ed O’Brien contrasting with the very human drumming of Phil Selway and Yorke’s alien melodies. Despite standouts such as “Bangers and Mash,” “Nude” and “Idioteque,” however, the set never really gathered much momentum, falling into several sleepy lulls that weren’t even dispelled by the fireworks over Soldier Field around 9 p.m.
Late in the set, Yorke admitted the band was dragging a bit, saying, "We're a little jet-lagged." But the famously anti-globalization, No Logo-championing activist made no comment about politics or the fact that he was performing on the stage sponsored by AT&T, which last year censored Pearl Jam as it lashed out against President Bush.
The bottom line: A good but not great evening from Radiohead—though Radiohead at its least extraordinary is arguably still better than any other band that spans that gap from Lollapalooza Then to Lollapalooza Now.
Among the other musical highlights on day one were Atlanta’s Black Lips, which unleashed a joyful explosion of energy and melody — though sadly, playing at the start of the day at this now family-friendly event, they avoided the usual drunken debauchery.
Later in the afternoon, with temperatures hovering near 90, the Brooklyn group Yeasayer delivered a cool, ethereal but uplifting performance that mixed shoegazer psychedelia with more timeless mind-altering sounds from around the world, including Chinese Gamelan, African tribal trance drumming and Middle Eastern drones.
Moonlighting White Stripes frontman Jack White was a revelation fronting his side project the Raconteurs. He yowled and writhed, choking notes from his guitar like he was wrestling a wildcat, all in the service of his own songs — sharp sonic firecrackers — and the sweeter, sunnier tunes of his fellow guitarist and singer Brendan Benson.
Then there was the day’s favorite hometown team: Cool Kids, the precocious pairing of South Siders Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks, whose skeletal beats and quick-witted tag-team rhymes recalled a hip-hop heyday that occurred when these MCs were still in diapers.
On the down side, while organizers claim they’ve finally learned from past problems with sound bleed, using computer analyses to tweak each stage’s audio, the sonic sludge from hair-metal orchestra Bang Camaro leaked into the hushed crowd watching Swedish chanteuse Sofia Talvik. And when Rogue Wave’s pretty pop battled Manchester Orchestra on an adjoining stage, frontman Zach Rogue cracked, “Ignore the noise behind us.”
After four years in Grant Park, the promoters should just admit that these embarrassing sonic clashes will only be eliminated when acts aren’t forced to play on adjacent stages at the same time.
As for the scene in the park, while Lollapalooza always provides plenty of prime people watching, this year, Big Brother is staring back.
In the wake of the shootings at Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Police Department has rolled out a new piece of equipment, the “Mobile Surveillance Unit/ICX Tactical Platform,” an ostentatious lift that elevates a small, fully enclosed, air-conditioned pod equipped with a battery of video recorders to film all of the action in the crowd from high above their heads.
The second oddest non-musical spectacle: a blue and white tent designated as the “Obama Store.” Items for sale include “Got Hope?” T-shirts (after the “Got Milk?” design, and selling for $15), YWC/ “Yes We Can” plastic drinking cups ($10), Barak bracelets ($4) and various posters, bumper stickers and refrigerator magnets.
Nowhere to be found: The McCain Boutique. It seems as if the Republican Presidential candidate might have a point when he laments that he can’t match the rock-star appeal of his Democratic opponent. Maybe a showdown between Obama and Jack White or Thom Yorke would be a more even match

from what i have read and what ive seen on you tube.. it looks like a normal crowd for hard rock festivals, so i think thats why lollapalooza security panicked cuz obviously alot of those getting hurt have never been to a show that intense before... ive been to dozens and at heavy shows, people know how to give space and pace themselves. u could see in the crowd that people looked lost and confused.... thats too bad but thats RATM.... still looked like a kick ass set as usual....

Speech By De la Rocha
"For these last eight years, all we've heard about is a mysterious outside force that threatedns our security and our liveihood everyday... *indecipherable* ...that some outside force is threatening our wayof life and our jobs and our livelihoods...and after *indecipherable*...it must dawn on us that its the big government that is the terrorist force sitting across from us.
"And I'm not just talking about the Bush administration, but the whole sick, conformist apparatus *indecipherable*
"They're supposed to step up and be our voice and congress they turned their backs on us. They turned their backs on the workers. They turned their backs on the soldiers. They got right behind Bush lock step and got this country into another sick war.
"Now we know brother Obama. We know brother Obama. But I tell you what, if he comes to power come November and he doesn't start pulling troops out of Afghanistan, I know a lot of people who are gonna stand up and burn down every office of every Senate.
"All this now we've been seeing is just the beginning, it's just the beginning. And no matter what happens in these *indecipherable*, I'll say this. That there is a generation of young black and latino brothers and sisters that are gonna force everyone in this country to make a decision very soon about what side they're going to stand on. And they're a generation of kids who don't give a f--- about national politics. They care about bread. They care about water. They care about housing and they care about justice. And they ain't gonna f---ing stand for any of that siii. They're just gonna take it.
"This new generation of blacks and latinos *indecipherable* are gonna make this country an offer it can't refuse. So wake up!

from chicago sun times coverage...such a nice crowd:
"The festival's First Aid provider, Medical and Safety Engineering, Inc. (MASE) estimated that at least 40 concertgoers were transported to area hospitals yesterday. MASE owner Jake Willens said he believed about 30 concertgoers were similarly transported on Friday.
While the First Aid tents saw few sick or injured attendees in the early part of Saturday, "from 8 to 10 last night, we got served," Willens said. Rage Against the Machine took the stage at 8:30.
"We had six ambulances and they ran non-stop" to hospitals, Willens said. Most of those were "lower extremity injuries" such as twisted or broken feet, ankles, legs and knees that happened people were stepped on by surging crowds or in mosh pits. A nurse recoiled when she told of treating an open fracture last night; "the bone was sticking out," she said."

sorry, sometimes I post but don't fully describe my intention. what I meant by my challenge was I wanted someone to name a kanye song that uses a sample of a song that was a bigger hit than kanye's song. that's what I meant by putting the second "hit" in parentheses.
also, it wasn't intended for everyone. it was intended for someone who I assumed had very little actual knowledge about samples and where they came from...haha.

You try it. People use that stupid, undercooked argument all the time, but a real hit is rare to come by. There are tons of people who use samples from hits and never go anywhere. It takes talent to make it into something that people enjoy.

Well, you can make the argument that the reason for that was that Soundscan didn't exist back then, so they didn't have an adequate way to track sales, especially in black communities, where that record was immensely popular.
apostle2
08-04-2008, 12:41 AM
not trying to get into an argument about it, just trying to illustrate a point. kanye west samples songs and makes them more popular than they ever were (a very large percentage of the time)
not a total validation of the art form, but a good point in defense of sampling as a viable means of expression

Also, we already have Stronger as evidence that he's willing to sample a song that was already an egregious case of theft by sample to begin with, so what's the point? What matters is whether or not any of the thieves in question turn out a decent product in the process.

... it's generally a safe statement to say that producers don't sample songs that are so popular everyone will notice what they did. That would look bad. This is a silly discussion.
Except most of them probably would if they could afford it, but most producers can't, because songs that everyone would notice are extremely expensive to get licensing rights for, especially now that record companies make so little off straight record sales. If the game were wide open, the Beatles would be hugely sampled.

08-04-2008, 01:06 AM
Kweli did a rather pathetically uncreative and blatant sample of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Can't be that expensive, the song was absolutely incapable of being a single. I think what deters them a lot more is the fact that it's not easy to sample such well-known music and have yours sound good in comparison. The Grey Album wasn't fucking easy to pull off.
Speaking of which, anybody else heard this album that pulls a Dangermouse with Frank Sinatra and Biggie? It's got a couple gooduns.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/142747-lollapalooza-report-friday-scott-plagenhoef
Last year, watching Interpol gamely attempt to convince people they were up to the task of headlining a huge outdoor festival, I grew concerned at the prospect of Lollapalooza attracting enough top-level talent to fill Chicago's Grant Park. Noting that this was a rock-oriented festival-- in case you hadn't noticed, we've somehow stopped birthing festival-headlining rock bands-- I suggested that Lollapalooza "perhaps is going to struggle to find new and thrilling headliners each year without soon repeating itself or going the reunion/Baby Boomer route."
OK, well, they showed me this year. With a headlining quintet of Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, and locals Kanye West and Wilco, this is a top-loaded event that, in all likelihood, should far outsell the previous years. Even with that collection of big names, the decision to highlight Radiohead, to pocket some cash and not schedule a sixth headliner across from them, was justified today almost as soon as the park opened. By all reports from colleagues who ditched the office to show up early, there were not only lines to get into the park, but they stretched roughly a half-mile long. Either Gogol Bordello are way more popular than I suspect, or a good portion of that crowd promptly parked itself in front of the AT&T stage to await the night's headliners.
It turned out to be a hell of a good decision, too-- those in and around the stage seemed to have a far richer experience than the rest of us. In short, through no fault of either party of course, Radiohead and Lollapalooza was a weird mix: A blend of too many people who loved Radiohead-- people who camped out all day to have a great experience-- with tens of thousands more who were into the event itself rather than the show. Despite being almost a decade from their commercial peak, Radiohead's reputation-- the relative scarcity of their Chicago performances, their ability to shift one-day festival tickets to fans who won't see another Lolla act all weekend-- and the fact that there were no other bands on at the same time made this by far the most-attended set I've seen at this event. And that made for a ridiculously crowded field full of a lot of inattentive ticketholders. (And with pricy cabanas and lounges taking the best elevated sight lines as well as space that should have been used for additional entrances and exits to this part of the park-- there were two gates for tens of thousands of people, and those were clogged with attendees perched on steps to get a better view of the stage-- had anyone needed immediate medical attention, this would have been a disaster.)
Oddly, too, the set limped at first, kicking off right on time and opening with a tentative stretch of fairly mid-tempo songs (see setlist at bottom). Of those, "The Gloaming" shone brightest-- it's always sounded better live than on record, and tonight was no exception. It was its follow-up, a sample-aided version of "The National Anthem", that really kicked the set up a few notches. By this time the crowd had settled, the sun had set, the group's frankly amazing light setup helped-- particularly because the band's video rig, a pair of 3x3 squares that never actually showed a solid view of what was on stage, wasn't the best fit for a crowd this size. (In other stage news, the group did cover the corporate banners on either side of them, but AT&T's name was still emblazoned on top of the structure.)
From here out, the band lived up to expectations, delivering a diverse, well-paced set that weirdly slipped most when it aimed to create a sense of event: Fireworks went off at the close of "The Bends", a nice gesture, but they continued through "Everything in Its Right Place" and "Fake Plastic Trees", two relatively soft songs, making them an aural surprise rather than just a visual one. While the fireworks finale paired well with and led some gravitas to the close of "Trees", the rest of the explosives display distractingly competed with the music.
Those quibbles aside, this was a dynamic set from any technical or even musical way you want to look at it: Songs like "Lucky", "The Bends", and "No Surprises" were the highlights one would expect them to be; newer tracks "House of Cards", "Jigsaw Falling Into Place", and "Videotape" hold their own alongside more established classics; and "Dollars and Cents" was a very welcome surprise.
And yet...out of the roughly 10 Radiohead shows I've attended, this was probably the least-engaging experience I've ever had seeing them live. The band is always dependably great, but the weirdly disinterested crowd and somewhat awkward setting made this something a bit less than it should have been. (Granted, the set had lot to live up to. Radiohead's 2001 show at the other end of Hutchinson Field, this same part of Grant Park, has gained almost legendary status around here. So, too, has a Chicago show that took place soon after the 1997 U.S. release of OK Computer-- it was one of those nights when people left a concert feeling that something very special was happening.)
Tonight-- despite the music, the songs, the performances-- felt like a wildly engaging art-pop band performing to a throng of devotees while many, many more people lined the show, tuned in when they felt like it, and talked, loudly, the rest of the time. That's a risk at any large event, particularly when a group's last two records are either not fest-friendly (In Rainbows) or up to par with most of its work (Hail to the Thief), but since this is likely Radiohead's only Chicago appearance this year, there was something disappointing about it.
Being fairly familiar with the rhythms and structures of Radiohead's sets, I decided to pop out just before the second encore to see what sort of crowd had gathered outside the venue-- I wanted to check that out while I still had time to re-enter the park if needed. Sure enough, up and down the west side of Columbus Drive were devoted Radiohead fans-- on blankets, on the roadside curb, on the grass. Some were with a group of friends, but most were in pairs or alone. Many had ridden their bikes, some had brought books, suggesting that they had camped out from a decent hour to get their spots. With traffic restricted from moving up and down Columbus, and with the buffer of parkspace between the fest and the busier arteries of downtown Chicago, the sound here was arguably better than it was inside the fest-- and nobody talked. What you heard, all you heard, was the music.
I wound my way through dozens of focused fans, some with their arms around each other, some hands intertwined, and guessed that they thought they were settling-- making due with what they could. Sure, they missed the light rigging, but seeing the band, feeling a part of something bigger than you are, basic comfort-- these things were difficult to come by inside the park. Besides, straining to hear "All I Need" over drunken shouts isn't a recipe for a warm memory, but lying in the grass with someone special and listening to a live performance of "House of Cards" just might be.
One of the marvelous things about the festivals I've attended recently is that they've provided a sense of togetherness and human connection that can seem to otherwise be slipping away from music in the internet era. I expected to feel that inside the show tonight, as I had in 1997 and 2001 and plenty of other Radiohead shows, and it didn't materialize for me. (It did, I'm happy to report, for some of our other staffers, so ideally far more people shared their reactions than mine.) But, across the way, this makeshift audience-- kids who decided to spend a Friday night listening to the sounds of their favorite band a quarter-mile from the stage-- somehow willed themselves to be connected to a moment from which they were so removed. And after every song, they applauded.

So from all these reviews, people who attended and comments on this board I'm not getting a feeling of the general consensus...
What was the overall experience? Good or bad?? Or just some sort of gray area?

i think some people were expecting some mind blowing experience and did not get it... then when they come down to reality, it was probably a solid set but it was a all day festival and humid so i think that took its toll. but it seems like they did well.....

Overall, its a very good experience! There is A LOT I loved about this festival and actually there was more that I liked than I disliked. Its well organized, the prices are much cheaper and a better value. I like the ability to walk around with a beer and not be coralled up. I felt the video screens were better here than at Coachella and are also at almost every stage if not all. This festival is very interactive, it seems they want you to be as involved in it as you possibly can be. Lots and lots of shaded areas with trees that were always a welcome place to sit and relax for a bit. The Kidzapalooza stage was so cute and really enjoyable to watch parents and their kids enjoy the time together (no, no kids here and don't want them but this was a really smile inducing place to be.)
The in and out privelege is a great thing even though I never left once I was there it was nice to have the option if I wanted it.
A very positive experience for me.
On the downside, and really there's not much.
It is one HELL of a walk from one end of the park to the other, add to that the abundance of people it is really a bitch.
The crowd itself, well its in a major city accessible to public transport and this draws a lot of people who may not necessarily be into the music but just into the fact that it is there and something to do.
To me Coachella is a journey which adds to the experience...you plan to be there its not just something you'd do to pass some time over a weekend. The crowd reflects this.
Lolla was HOT HOT HOT and humid. Even though Chella temps top them it never feels like it did this weekend in Chicago. OMG, just friggin hot!
Coachella I think has a better grasp on the new stuff and gets them before the rest catch on...by the time they get to Lolla its almost as if its yesterdays news, still good, but not as fresh.
NOTHING beats the backdrop of mountains and palm trees at Coachella!!! The city as a backdrop just reinforced the fact that you were in the middle of a city...not somewhere you made a pilgrimage to so you could escape the real world.
Would I go back, yes I would and Id have another great time, however, it would take another great lineup. I get my chella ticket before the announced line up because I know I will have an incredible time!

nice post sigur... i had the same type of feel for bonnaroo... it was a amazing experience cuz u had to plan it and the crowd was there for the same reason... coachella has the greatest backdrop and looks so incredible at night.. both are great but coachella seems to get the artists first before they become huge or bigger and then they pass other festivals and everyone has already seen them... its just nice to have festivals all over so enjoy it now!! 5 more months till announcements!!!!!!! :)

Nice post stache.
I wouldn't ever go....for a few reasons...
It's in the city, which tells me it would be a hassle (traffic, etc). I don't like hassle. Also tells me that people that live there go to just "hang out". Which is fine, but it raises the body count and the douche factor. Turns it into a place to be seen versus a place to enjoy music. There's something to be said about open grassy fields in the middle of the desert--like an oasis--that everyone has to travel to and come together at. Also, 95 and super humid in the middle of summer? No thanks.
And, the lack of electronic music and abundance of hard rock is a turnoff. Just not my thing. Yeah, they had a good lineup, but what's the "get"? NIN? Yeah, great...but they're touring. Radiohead? Yeah, great...but they're touring. RATM? We already got 'em. Kanye? Bah...he's touring. The great thing about Coachella is their ability, year after year, to get the "ungettable get". That's why I will always go.

He never officially released it though. It's not good, I agree. If they were available, however, then people with more production talent (Dangermouse being a great example) would be able to work their magic.
And Girl Talk is never the answer. He doesn't clear any of the samples he uses, and he's lucky he hasn't been sued. He's got a defense, but it almost certainly won't work as its never been applied to samples before and the record industry has a large gaggle of lawyers.

lolla was fucking awesome. I agree with everyone about them overselling it. Other than that no other bad thing to say. Radiohead killed, the set list was fucking EPIC. RAGE slowed down they music a few beats because of the pussies who couldn't handle the show. NIN rocked, but after about 50 minutes of them, I ran my ass over to kanye. I got there in about 5 minutes, I was running super fast, and got a good spot. Kanye was better than he was in SD back in April. I saw many other bands, more details later.

I was one of the "pussies" in front who couldn't really breathe because of all the assholes who decided to push 30 minutes BEFORE Rage went on stage. I had to crowd surf outta there. There's getting wild at a show and then there's being a fucking douche bag and making it uncomfortable for everyone else. I saw Rage at Coachella and Vegoose and the crowd was MUCH better at those festivals. I really enjoyed the show, though, once I found a less packed spot (and still a good view).

Just a brief personal synopsis:
- Black Keys tore it up at The Metro Thursday night, and I was lucky enough to catch the crumpled setlist thrown by the singer/guitarist. Definitely a great kickoff for the weekend.
- Best weather ever for Lolla, Friday was the only really hot day.
- Loosest security of any festival or show I've ever been to.
- Radiohead was just mindblowing. The pindrop silence of 75,000 at many times, especially during Fake Plastic Trees, was beautiful.
- RATM was way better than at Coachella last year. Whereas last year I felt like it was just them covering their hits, Saturday night felt like RATM had rediscovered their rage.
- NIN was solid too, awesome lights. Hated Kanye sound bleed, though. March of the Pigs was insane.
It was my favorite Lolla of the past 3 years. I'm never going to forget the headliners, but especially Radiohead. They really are on just another level than anyone/anything else I've seen.

I didn't see a Barrier/Railing at center stage, between the sound booth and the front railing..this middle Barrier separates the 'Mosh Pit' from the peeps standing behind them...Fest organizers screwed up on that part..Coachella and Vegoose both had this covered...Lolla did not, therefore, they FAIL

Just got home not too long ago.
My flight back home was delayed over 3 hours because of the storms and tornado warnings.
And when everyone was on the plane, we were sitting on the tarmac waiting for another 30 minutes because other planes were taking off....
As I flew back to Orlando, I saw non stop lightning in the sky. It was scary and surreal...
Anyways, had a great time at Lolla.
Quick random thoughts: While I'm sure Kanye did a great performance, I'm so glad I checked NIN instead.
And Kanye didn't even bring his Glow In The Dark tour stage setup :o
I woulda sorta been dissapointed with that.....
I loved Gnarls Barkley, but the crowd didn't seem too into it. At least the area around me.
But the live rendition of WHOS GONNA SAVE MY SOUL was amazing!
Everyone left the stage except Danger Mouse, so I thought he was gonna have a little solo jam session, but then after starting up a beat and playing some keys, everyone came back onstage one by one.
It was the highlight of the show IMO.
Their cover of Reckoner was great too
I got SOME descent pics with my camera that has a lot to be desired...later though....

I had a great time the whole weekend. The after shows were sweet. Chicago is a really fun town. The venue is sweet. I didn't notice any problems with sound or stage setup the whole weekend. All three headliners were impeccable. Rage has hit their stride again and NIN blew me away. Holy shit Trent is an animal on stage!
Its not a destination in itself like Coachella. I think this is due to the lack of onsite camping. That said, I'll be going back if the lineup is good in the future.

Nobody cares about your negative, uneducated opinion in this thread. Thanks for not going, and please stay away.
LOLLA FCKING RULED!!
NIN took it to a level I didn't think was possible. We were spotted up in front of the soundboard eye level with the stage since the hill was slightly slanted down.
Explosions in the Sky, BSS, Iron & Wine and Newton Faulkner all put on great shows.
The sound for Slash & Perry wasn't good unless you were right up front. Luckily, that is where we were. The Jane Says sing along with Slash on the guitar was worth the price of admission imo. One of those fuzzy feeling moments.
Hammock Haven was a great little addition to the park. Very much enjoyed that on early Sunday.
Thank you Perry once again for a mindbending weekend.

Finally, caught up with work from the days off so here are a few words about Lolla...
Got on the VIP list for the Mark Ronson pre-party, which was a lot of fun. Their performance at HOB was WAAAAAY better than Lolla so I'm glad I caught that. Here is Kenna on stage doing Radiohead's "Just" while Mark is in the crowd...
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9453/lolla1ci9.jpg
Caught the 2nd half of the The GO! Team after waiting to get into the festival, they were fun as always...then made it over to watch Duffy's set...she can really sing and it doesn't hurt that she is cute...
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/158/lolla3ty2.jpg
Even though the set dragged a bit... Radiohead was indeed epic at Lolla. Thom's freak out during Idioteque was awesome. I was way closer than this and have a pretty good video, but since there have no videos of it yet here it is what the fireworks were like...
rOCwOrccBSA
On Saturday the first act I caught was Booka Shade who killed it even though it was in the afternoon... heard the end of MGMT as well which, from where I was, didn't sound that great.
Then sat down and got a good spot for Jamie Lidell who KILLED it, def one of the best sets of the weekend. From his funky band who disappeared into the crowd halfway into the set to his solo-beat boxing electronic wizardry, every moment was awesome... will be catching him at the Fillmore in Sept now...

I couldn't resist seeing what Uffie was like so I made it over to BMI and luckily she was about 20 minutes late. She had a band with her and actually didn't completely suck. On the other hand she is completely white trash who attracts a really creepy crowd... think nerdy male bloggers who like her because they think they have a chance...or at least want to take as many pictures as possible for uh, later use...
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/1153/lolla7uy0.jpg
I was completely unimpressed with Rage Against The Machine...it is pretty obvious it's all about the money at this point...left early, glad I saw they back in the mid-90's.
Day 3 was all about getting a good spot for Chromeo and I didn't realize it at the time but a huge crowd had formed around us by mid-set. Probably attracted one of the most annoying crowds of the weekend, but was still a blast...
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/5063/lolla8we2.jpg
Gnarls was amazing...Kanye was no big deal and NIN blew my mind...great weekend.
Two disturbing things I noticed were people's willingness to put fake tattoos of sponsor's logos on their body and their willingness to wear trendy-looking cheap neon sunglasses given out by Time Warner with advertising all over them...far worse than wearing retro Ray Bans.

Slurpee Matt, thanks for the rooftop party. What a fucking weekend. Highlights for me included NIN big time, awesome show. The National kicked ass once they turned down the bass and you could hear the vocals. Kid Sister was way impressive and fun. Wilco was kick ass. The Raconteurs rocked. Jack broke two strings and BB broke two foot pedals and I loved it. They put on a fucking great show. Jeff Tweedy playing the kids stage was awesome. I'm exhausted, just got home, 2 flights of mine were canceled last night, slept sort of at the airport and got on another airline today.
One complain was way too many people who are in the crowd but acting like they are at the bar hooting and hollering about gossip and cheersing and shit. The festival is huge, go run your fucking mouth about who's dating who somewhere else. This occurred on several occasions. It stood out because you don't really encounter that at Coachella. My best experience was Flogging Molly..i've heard so much about their live shows and got to see what the fuss was about and i gotta say, it was fun times...if they sold Guiness there i most def woulda held it up to them
I watched Rage from the side, which was a good idea, and the show still rocked, even tho it was the same set list i've seen for the third time in a little over a year.
Okkervil River and The National delivered amazing sets as well
I did 45 min of NIN and hustled to Kanye to finish the fest which i do not regret..Kanye 'Put On for his city'
I had my best times at Perry's..DIOYY's DJ set and DJ AM's set were a blast and the crazy dirrty kids dancing in the dust to Flosstradamus were a good time as well..
I'd do lolla again for sho!...it was kinda nice to be done at 10pm and have some time to chill and wind down after the day..

Flogging Molly was EPIC. The positive energy from the crowd at their set was amazing. They left it all out there and for me it was one of the best sets this whole past weekend.

After more thought on the weekend these were the best acts I saw.
Booka Shade
Battles
Gogol
Holy Fuck
NIN
Radiohead
Rage
Flogging Molly
Chromeo
Jamie Lidell
Gogol and Battles after shows were epic. The Gogol show was the best performance I've seen from them.
The crowd was interesting. Very bro-tastic, totally different from Coachella. The Rage set was a little out of control with all the drunk bros getting their male dominance thing on. That aside, Rage is back, Morello was doing a lot more improv solo's and the band as a whole was much tighter than they were at the beginning of the reunion.
And people did talk a ton during ALL the sets. That was a little irritating.
All in all Lolla was one of the best weekends of my life. It’s a very well produced festival and you can really tell they’re paying attention to the details. Tons of fun.

Singer seems to mumble a bit. The music is nice enough but I just didn't really enjoy much of any of it. John Butler Trio seemed much more talented. I'm a huge Calexico fan by the way so i'm not sure what it was but I made a point to check them out and was really bored and dispapointed. I wonder if any others checked them out and what they thought. Just not my style.
