Jeff Tweedy is Lolla's Sean Penn?

AWESOME....why does Friday look so weak to me? Maybe I have no taste in music. Looks like i'll do Gogol, Cat Power, Raconteurs.

Then we have Wilco vs Rage.....I guess we predicted that one. Wilco wins!

Finally we have Gnarles into The National into NIN. Sweet.

Ahh I was wrong. Tweedy isn't Sean Penn at all he's playing a childrens show. Nice. I must say I will miss chuckling from the back during Rage this time around. Oh well. As much as I like to poke fun at Rage it's always a spectacle of some sort but I will skip it for Wilco without hesitation..

No No No No.fuck!
I was hoping if Kanye was playing against someone, it would be Rage ('cause I give 2 shits about them).

But NIN??

This is a hard decision!
While I saw Kanye already, I've been looking forward to seeing his set again...
I like NIN, but I dont know if I like Trent enough to do this...

I guess I could see half and half, but eh...

Well to each their own, but I did see the GLOW tour in Tampa, and loved it.

And I think i'd prolly enjoy myself more at his set than NIN's...i guess...
I'll prolly make a decision the day of, but for now Kanyes the winner for me.
Plus, Gnarls Barkley is on before him, so those 2 back to back are pretty sweet!

Also, Uffie starts at 6pm! That's a step up for her :)

I don't think i'll be doing any after shows. Looks like my choices on Friday are leave early or check out Radiohead. I'll probably check out radiohead but I imagine they will put me to sleep. Heh, yeah that's right, Radiohead puts me to sleep and Wilco doesn't. :)

You did say it would be NIN vs Kanye and I am thankful for it. Hopefully more people choose Kanye lol.

Of all the good bands on Friday, you'd think a better one than Bloc Party would be playing before Radiohead. Yeah, nasty conflicts...nothing out of the ordinary. If I was going...

Friday:
Gogol Bordello 4:15-4:45
Cat Power 5:15-6:15
Raconteurs 6:15-7:15
Radiohead 8:00-10:00...have to miss CSS because what's the point if you can't get up close and gotta work the crowd as much as possible for Radiohead

Saturday:
MGMT 3:30-4:00
EITS 4:30-5:30
Okkervil River 5:30-6:30
BSS 6:30-7:30
eat and piss and shit
Rage 8:30-10

Sunday:
Kid Sister 12:15-1:15
Iron & Wine 4:15-5:15
Saul Williams 5:30-6:00
Gnarls Barkley 6:15-until they play "Crazy"...if not until the end of the set, then no Girl Talk
NIN 8:15-10:00

google maps can't take into account how slow it will be to get out of there. with thousands of people all heading in different directions taxis might be scarce, busses are likely to be full, and movement on foot may even be a little slow. the actual time it takes to get to an aftershow is information that is best to get from people who have done this before.

Overall, the schedule isn't too bad. Much better than last years conflictapalooza. But there are some bad ones.

Gogol Bordello vs The Black Keys
MGMT vs DeVotchKa (this was also a Coachella conflict)
Battles vs Broken Social Scene (brutal)
Sharon Jones vs getting a good spot for Rage
Flogging Molly vs Saul Williams
Love and Rockets vs. Gnarls Barkley (ouch)

for anyone who has gone to the aftershows, how much later do they start? can I watch all of the headliners set at lolla, and get to an aftershow in time?. How far away are the venues for the aftershows, from grant park?

The main band starts around midnight/12:30. They realize that it takes a bit for everyone to get to the show, and the bars in Chicago don't close until 4ish, so they don't rush it.

Yes, you can watch all the headliners and get to an aftershow in plenty of time. The distance of the venue depends on what venue you are asking about. Most are about a 15/20 minute cab ride. You are right next to Lakeshore when you get in the cab. If you are going up north, make them take Lakeshore. You can walk to the House of Blues from Grant Park.

The price of the aftershows is usually around $20. Depends on the venue. I have paid more and I have paid nothing at all before.

I would think that there will be a lot of these bands playing aftershows at smaller venues that aren't being advertised much yet. The one's that are up are great though.

For those looking for a good area to go out after the show, I would hit up Bucktown/Wicker Park around the North Ave and Damon intersection. Many chill back bars and restaurants line the streets with a couple that play good music all night long.

Safe travels to everyone going. Its going to be a great weekend.

You're looking at about 3 miles. The double door is a short cab drive away.
Unfortunatly it's not along the "L" route so cabbing it is going to be the quickest. Chicago's public transportation is top notch though. There aren't many places in the city that public transportation won't take you.

Get to know this site. Or just meet up with me and i'll be your guide and believe me, after going to school in the city for 2 years and working in the loop for another 4, i'm still no expert but I can get around pretty well with resources like this.

Actually, to cut through the bullshit. Here is RTA trip planner. As long as you have addresses you are gold. You can take the blue line from Grant Park to the Double door and it appears to let you off around the corner.

If you plan on riding Chicago public transit plan ahead and purchase a visitor's pass. The buses don't have exact change and they no longer have transfer cards, exactly $2 each ride.

Your Best Travel Value: Visitor Passes offer you the most economical travel value. With unlimited rides, the more you ride, the more you save!

* 1-Day Fun Pass for $5
* 2-Day Visitor Pass for $9
* 3-Day Visitor Pass for $12
* 5-Day Visitor Pass for $18

Yep that 3 day pass will save you a shit load. That's about the price of a one way cab ride 3-4 miles away. Especially in traffic. You can plan out everything and print routes and "L" lines to take step by step on the RTA site and save a shitload of money. All you need is addresses and http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/

Done. You just saved at least $100 i'm guessing if you are planning on going to and from after shows and such.

Where you sucka's flying into? I'm flying into O'hare on July 31st at 6PM. If you all want to exchange cell numbers and such we can meet up and see some things in the city and have a killer dinner.

Maybe we can all go to Gino's East for supper around 9PM on July 31st. Who would be in for some deep dish?

Scratch that, they are only open until 9pm. They open at 11AM daily though so maybe 11AM on Friday. Then we can all split cabs over to the fest. It's only a mile and a half from there.

Just a thought. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Nice :)

Speaking of Midnight Vultures, that tour was still hands down the best show i've seen of his. Wicked wonderful. I want that tour back again. Funky with disco ball and beck acting like he's having a blast. I found the last tour to have gone on too long and it seemed more scripted than spontaneous. The puppet thing was cool but the whole greatest hits "stomp" rip off annoyed the fuck out of me. Then again I had no business seeing that tour 3 times. I dug the Sea Change tour quite a bit, especially the intimate theater show he did in Scottsdale which was basically him with Dusty.. is that right? I think so. Anyway, I am interested in this tour. I'm not a big fan of the Guero album but I dig the information.

faxman75
06-18-2008, 02:37 PM
I would pay good money to see him play "debra" with full effects again. That was absolutley unforgettable. Lites down, mirror ball and him working his ass off on stage doing Motown as good as anyone can.

FRIDAY

1. The Go! Team vs. The Enemy UK vs. Yeasayer conflicts are brutal ... arrrrrrgh! (I love The Go! Team. They were so awesome at Coachella '06 and I would love to see them again. But it sounds like I'll be splitting my time with The Enemy UK and Yeasayer since the stages they are playing are within close distance. I WANT FULL SETS OF ALL THOSE 3!

2. Cat Power over Mates of State (ugh ... just because I've never seen Cat Power. I already skipped her at past Coachella also because of conflicts.) WTF? Grizzly Bear is also kinda conflicting.

3. The Raconteurs vs. Bloc Party (I skipped TR at Coachella '08 becuase of conflict and I was underwhelmed by The Bloc Party the 1st 2 times I've seen them at Coachella & ACL but for some reason I really like them on records and I would love to give them a 3rd chance.) - game time decision

K'NAAN -> Black Lips -> The Parlor Mob -> The Enemy UK -> Yeasayer -> The Kills -> The Black Keys -> Cat Power -> Grizzly Bear -> The Raconteurs/Bloc Party -> Radiohead

Radiohead FTW!

SATURDAY

too many conflicts but none is as brutal as #1 in FRIDAY (De Novo Dahl vs. M&TNSaS; Foals and Gutter Twins arrrrgh; BSS over Battles - good thing I saw Battles at Coachella ... I was hoping to see them again at Lolla though; SJ&TDK vs. Toadies

DIOY? -> Margot & The Nuclear So & So's -> The Ting Tings -> Foals -> The Gutter Twins -> Booka Shade -> EITS -> Okkervil River -> BSS -> SJ&TDK -> Toadies -> RATM

M&TNSAS, Foals, Booka Shade, Okkervil River, RATM FTW!

SUNDAY

I'm so excited for my first NIN!

Biggest conflict is Girl Talk vs. Gnarls Barkley (but hey I'll even take GB over KW so ... but then, whatever!)

The Octopus Project (hahaha I remember seeing them pretty much same time slot at Coachella '06) -> WMWF -> The Weakerthans -> NA&TS -> Brazilian Girls (underwhelming at UMF '07 but ...) -> Amadou Mariam -> Chromeo -> Iron & Wine -> Saul Williams -> Blues Traveler -> Gnarls Barkley -> Girl Talk -> The National -> NIN -> Kanye (if and when theres epic delay/late finish in KW show)

NIN, The National, Gnarls Barkley FTW!

For me (since I'm not too keen or already saw some of the bands playing) Sunday kinda suck overall vs. Friday & Saturday ...

meh. They're above average for me. I've seen them twice, once at a festival and once at a small venue with them headlining, and they're ok. Not anything real amazing, but not bad. They're material is just too similar, and it got old for me fast.

Lichens opened for EITS when I saw them, and he completely stole the show for me. Really blew me away.

07-08-2008, 06:13 PM
I can hardly believe this is coming up so fast... Definitely Gnarls over L&R, that's not even a conflict. As far as NIN or Kanye, well, of my group of 8-10 people going, we're all going to NIN, that's a no-brainer too. I saw Kanye at Lolla 2 years ago and he was underwhelming at best, his ego is just too big to fit in at a festival.

Oh, and EITS are very good live, that will be a great afternoon show.

Wheres the beef?

they're good no doubt, and see them if the chance permits, but I just personally think their material is too rehashed. When I saw them, every song sounded the same and had similar structure. If their kind of music is what you're really into, then there you go. but for me it just got boring after a while.

I love their style....I mean I like "post-rock" in general, but mainly only EITS and GYBE, the latter being some of the best shit around. There is something EITS that is so soothing to me though....perhaps in part because they provide the background and music for FNL too.

that is how I feel about EITS, it's just so damn soothing. I like how the songs climax, you feel like your on a journey, and it has a beginning, middle, and an end.
BTW- I got a hotel now, it's 1.5 miles from the venue, and it's a block away from the HOB so I'm doing Bloc Party/CSS now because of it. Friday is still up in the air for aftershows.

JSam67
07-08-2008, 11:28 PM
The only one I've got is how much Raconteurs I can watch and still grab a decent view of Radiohead...I really don't want to see Bloc Party based on seemingly everyone who has seen them live having awful things to say about their live show.

Sushov23
07-08-2008, 11:29 PM
well if that counts as a conflict, then I also have that conflict. I'm thinking watch an hour of Rac, and then run to the other side for Radiohead.

JSam67
07-08-2008, 11:37 PM
I'm hoping to do the same, but I have concerns about how big that crowd will be for Radiohead (if it's anything like Pearl Jam, the unopposed headliner last year, it's gonna be beyond packed), as well as my ability to walk away from the Raconteurs.

Also, which hotel are you staying in? I'm trying to decide on aftershows besides The Black Keys and wonder if the HoB is super close too. I'm at the Chicago City Centre.

Sushov23
07-08-2008, 11:43 PM
it's called Courtyard Chicago Downtown/River North. Type in the address of the hotel you are staying in on google maps, and from there find the address to the HOB.

That's ambitious, idrive. I know I won't see that many bands. Too many bands playing non-main stages sandwiched between good main stage bands. I have a feeling that most conflicts will probably be decided by not wanting to walk across Grant Park.

Also, how are you going to see both Girl Talk and Gnarls? I hate that conflict. But yeah, Raconteurs vs. getting a good spot for Radiohead is going to be the toughest choice I have to make. And I can't wait for the weeded-out crowd for NIN, that show is going to be more awesome than anything all weekend except, I'm sure, Radiohead.

What is the estimate for the time it takes to walk from one main stage to the other. I am only going on Friday and will have family in tow. It would be very helpful to know approximate time/distance across Grant Park. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I'd say it's in the 10 to 20 minutes range depending on the crowd at the time and how quickly you and your crew can hoof it.

I'm on the list for the CSS after show and have seen the best Raconteurs show I could ever see so I'm glad that time is open to get a good spot for Radiohead. It's true, he DJs around LA all the time. He started by running the Kid's Cotton Club and then went into DJ ing. Famous people have this strange belief that once they become famous they are experts in politics, music, the environment, singing, dancing, and anything else that strikes their fancy. I think it's some kind of mental disorder that you get when millions of people kiss your ass.

Oh yeah, the DJ sets look pretty mediocre at Lolla, but they were never known for that...

See descriptions below:

The Kids' Cotton Club features Los Angeles' finest jazz, rythym and blues, and rock musicians every Sunday night at Guy's in West Hollywood. Partying since doors opened in 2004, The Kids' Cotton Club is the brainchild of musician Joe Firstman and actor/DJ Danny Masterson in recreating the 1920s NY jazz scene in modern LA times. Not only the best Sunday Night party in town, the two hosts were recently pleased to accept the honor of "Best Club Night" in Los Angeles given by Los Angeles Magazine in July of 2006. Ladies are encouraged to wear dresses and gentlemen must don a necktie. Doors open at 10pm.

Career

Masterson starred as Justin in Cybill, Jimmy Girvin in Roseanne, and has made several guest appearances on Punk'd and MADtv. His younger brother is actor Christopher Masterson of the television series Malcolm in the Middle and the movie, Scary Movie 2.

He is a co-owner of Dolce, a restaurant he founded with That '70s Show co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama. Masterson also frequently DJs at Los Angeles night clubs under his name, DJ MomJeans, formerly DJ Donkey Punch. DJ MomJeans will be playing a 2 hour set at the 2008 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Masterson also co-hosts a Monday night radio show titled Feel My Heat, on Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles, California.

If I loved Wilco and hated Rage I would still see Rage just because of the rarity. Chances are if you really like Wilco, you've already seen them plenty of times live. I can see where he's coming from though. If you're just a casual music fan who likes Wilco a little bit and doesn't care for Rage. I'm just pointing out how common a Wilco show is and how rare a Rage show is, because he might not realize the special opportunity he has to see Rage.

That would be last year, not this year. It has been clearly for the money, if this was about it being ''rare'' they wouldve stopped after Rock The Bells, or truly done a one off at Coachella. Its going to be the same set that bas been payed the last 18 months btw. They have only switched up 4 songs or so differently.

Why would a new album be senseless? Just because they've been reported as saying they don't want to that doesn't make it senseless?
