Young blood, if you're serious about that Pemberton fest, that would be the second real festival (after Summerfest) that shares a name with one of the entries in the Create Your Own Festival contest.
Summerfest has been around for ages, though.

Mine was first!
I name of my festival, "Pemberton", is the name of the neighborhood I live in. I chose it simply because I thought it sounded good.

NIN and Radiohead would make quite an excellent festival... the 3rd headliner probably doesnt even matter....but if it were the Beastie Boys, i would def fly out to it...

I'm going to make an educated guess here and say that Smashing Pumpkins will be the 3rd headliner. After all, I don't think they've even played Chicago since their resurgence.
shotglass75
03-07-2008, 01:46 PM
the vibe is awful. you can tell a lot of the crowd doesn't care that much about music. major of meat head, frat boy, midwest scene. seems like a lot of people were there just because they didn't have anything to do that weekend. lot of a sound bleed between the stages and in the worst ways, like having a local/small band stage right behind the same stage LCD Soundsystem played... major wtfs.
and Coachella didn't have that scene last year? Pa-Leeze.

we don't want them. no one cares anymore and having both NIN and Radiohead is more than enough. I'm crossing my fingers for Chems or Underworld...actually now that I think of it Moby might be a good Friday night headliner

Think about if they get Bjork for the 3rd headliner...
The 3 top Alternative grups/artists of the 90's. Pretty damn sweet...
I think this NIN and Radiohead thing was only made possible because the NJ festival dropped out this year. Thus, more "FUN" money.
I dont think Radiohead will be closing out the festival either...I think NIN will close it out Sunday.
Think about thinking.

I respectfully think you are wrong. The city doesn't want a bunch of "angry" youths wandering around it's city on a Sunday night after the show. My thoughts are Friday night, NIN, Saturday could possibly be Radiohead but I really think they will be saving them for the Sunday slot and not put anyone up against them.

Good point for the thing about sunday.
However NIN is currently the only headliner that is NOT involved with any other festival this year (to my knowledge). Lollapalooza's history shows that they purposely keep one of their Headliners (particulary the ones that play Sunday at the fest) exclusive. Currently, Radiohead is a part of a handful of US music festivals this year. Which leads me to think they wont be this "exclusive headliner", this year. However, the fact that they are RADIOHEAD could cancel out this "exclusive headliner" tradition.

Top 3 in terms of what? Definitely not album sales or name recognition, and I think even critical acclaim would be a really big stretch. I love all three, don't get me wrong, but to include Bjork and say they're the top 3 alternative artists of the '90s is pretty far fetched.

Ha, I knew this would be questioned.
Well let me change my statement to, "3 of the Top Alternative Artists from the 90's".
Bjork isnt world-renowned? I would probably say more so than Radiohead.

Bosco you may want to lay off the pills for a little while. And think of your Top 3 from the 90's. 3 artist to choose from from the entire 90's and Bjork is in your top 3? C'mon now.

I'd go with Radiohead, Pulp, Portishead
Bosco
03-07-2008, 02:42 PM
Thats not my top 3.
My personal top 3 would be
The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, and Beck (strictly his 90's material).
But I feel the most successful Alternative groups to come out of the 90's is Radiohead and Bjork. I admit NIN might not be top 3, but successful none the less.

I meant just the top 3, recognition wise, out of the 90's. I dont think i need to explain Radiohead's success. As for Bjork, she is the biggest Diva of the Alternative world. Her music might not be greatly accepted in the US as it should be, but worldwide, she's a star. Plus, I believe her type of music adapts to a much broader audience world wide than Radiohead's. As for NIN, I was reaching, I already admitted that.
Edit: oh yeah, and im not basing my info off of anything....im just winging it.

Yup, I was able to buy 2 tix this morning (the other one for a friend). I was working and had been in meeting 9:30 - 10:30 AM ET. So as soon as it ended we immediately checked/called 1-888-512-SHOW (frontgates #). We got busy signals so we knew something was up (since we got pre-recorded message immediately all day yesterday). We kept trying until we got the message to wait as all CSRs were busy blah blah blah ... *I also checked it online but I never saw any message in Lollapalooza.com about tix going on sale neither the link to frontgate mentioned about any sale going on ...*

So far, for the other acts confirmed for Lolla... they are all playing Coachella as well. Gogol Bordello, Sharron Jones and Flogging Molly.
I was initially shell-shocked from the Radiohead/NIN anouncement. But now that it seems NIN will likely be doing a full on North American tour, and Outside Lands has some good rumours going on... I am once against leaning towards outside lands. That and Outside Lands will probably be around $500-600 cheaper for me.

A friend of mine met her after the L.A. show last year and asked her if she was doing any more U.S. shows and she said there are still places she wants to take the tour to here that she hasn't visted.
But of course that doesn't mean she will this time around, I guess. We'll just have to wait.
I managed to catch her show in Detroit, and I kinda feel my life won't be complete unless I see her one more time on this tour :)

C DUB YA
03-22-2008, 05:09 PM
depends on what decent price means.
the cheapest ($100-150-ish) close-by hotels are prolly The Inn of Chicago - which is a Best Western, The Red Roof, Seneca, or the Congress Hotel. But to be honest, none of those are that great, I'd rather spend a little more money and stay at a much better hotel, but that's me. I've stayed in the majority of downtown Chicago hotels, so if you need specifics, just ask, but I will give you a quick rundown.
if you feel like spending a tad more... but still not breaking the bank, try these.
Almalfi (really great local and amazing beds, under-rated)
Ambassador Hotel (always has a low rate)
Hotel 71 (even better local and W-ish modern styled decor)
Hotel Blake (theater district, close to lolla)
Hyatt Regency (across the river from Sheraton, decent rooms for the dough)
Sheraton (super close to Lolla, very nice for a Sheraton)
Palmer House Hilton (excellent rooms, service and location for the price)
for a little more...
Sofitel (Rush Street, closer to mag mile than the festival, but very nice)
Hard Rock (comfy rooms/beds and about as close as it gets to the festival)
The James (great mag mile local, super close to everything, modern rooms)
Intercontinental (on Michigan Ave. 2 blocks North of Wacker)
W Lakeshore (awesome in every way, esp those beds, next to Sheraton)
Drake (old school luxury is still nice and they have a good rate, usually)
Conrad (downtown at Rush and Grand, closer to shopping than the park)

just stay at the congress. I stayed there last year, and it wasn't extremely great but I only wanted a place where to sleep and take a shower anyway. And it has the perfect location.
I'm looking some people to split room with for the congress or a close hotel to the park, by the way.
If you want something cheaper, stay at the HI (Hostelling International). $133-153 for 4 nights, and it's just 3 blocks away from the park. I already made my reservation there just in case.

Congress Plaza Hotel (and some hotels like Hilton) is (/are) practically across the street/festival ground and Best Western - Grant Park is few blocks away from Congress.
One of the best things attending Lolla if you are flying from anywhere ... you do not need a rental car and there are several Chicago city attractions/hotels walking distance from the festival ground.

There is so much public transportation around Lollapalooza you dont need to have a Hotel close by. You might be better off just getting a hotel in the suburbs for cheap and take the metra into the city and or a hotel in the north part of the city and using the "EL". Wouldnt recommend staying in the south side of Chicago though.

Etty: We have a lot of close to confirmations but nothing 100% confirmed.

Etty: So I don’t want to throw it out there in case it doesn’t work out. But I can tell you that there will be a lot more Hip Hop.
Mike: OK.
Etty: I could give you a hint. Somebody that we almost 100% will have is a Hip Hop artist that has a reality show right now.
Mike: Hum?
Etty: You’re like which one? (Laughing)
Mike: (Laughing) I know. I gotta think on that one. I don’t think I’ll be able to guess it.
Etty: It’s a little (inaudible) he has a reality show I think on E.
Mike: OK.
Etty: And he’s done well in the past.
Mike: Hum? Once we get done with this interview I’m going to have to rewind this and listen to all these clues again and see if I can figure this out.

How is the festival as a whole? Production, crowds, lines, setup? Whats the word?
I've gone the last 2 years, the headliners last year were unbelievable. Daft and Muse were amazing, and Pearl Jam had the biggest crowd I've ever seen. I love Lolla, but I'm partial because it's the one good event that's actually pretty close to home. It has a 10 pm curfew, which is kinda a bummer, and they typically match up pretty strong bands against each other at the 2 main stages (e.g. Modest Mouse vs. MMJ last year), which are at opposite ends of Grant Park (pretty good walk). There are I think 6 other stages, and there's been a lot of good shows on those stages the past couple years - Wolfmother, Silversun Pickups, Mates of State, LCD Soundsystem, etc.
Lines aren't bad at all for anything, nothing like waiting for the shower on Coachella mornings. And there's a lot of different food/beverage stops as well as port-a-potties. (Also, if security is an issue you're curious about, I've never been even patted down or had to empty my pockets, and have only seen people with bags get searched.) It's all sponsored, which cuts down the cost, but as a result you get to stare at a big AT&T or Bud Light logo during a set. It's pretty hot and very humid usually, but there's plenty of shaded areas and a breeze coming in from the lake. I love the skyline backdrop, it's quite different from Coachella's vibe but cool in its own way. And I love being able to sleep comfortably in AC somewhere and have easy public transportation to the fest in the mornings. And the upside to that curfew is you can go out at night, and there are usually Lolla bands playing small places at night if you want to see more music.
It's no Coachella, but I've had a blast each time, and if it's Radiohead/NIN/RATM, then my excitement level will probably be even higher than for Coachella.

Geez, It was a rough guess. The hostel is a shade over $30/night plus taxes and fees (four nights ~$133). The total for tickets and hostel should be around $320. Considering we're talking about a major festival in the middle of a large city thats not too bad.

JSam67
03-25-2008, 07:08 AM
See, what the fuck is up with my computer? That link is nowhere to be found on the Lolla page in any window I bring the website up in. Just like Golden Tickets all over again.
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:09 AM
http://lollapalooza.com/default.asp?fd=1 is the only link i can give u...instead of the news thing being about Lolla 07 downloads, its about the tickets, says click here... then in the tickets tab, there is a link....and the link is fucked at the moment.

JSam67
03-25-2008, 07:24 AM
It's definitely Radiohead, and I think NIN is almost a definite too. And if that's the case, I really wouldn't care who all the other bands were (but it's nice that there will be plenty more good ones and 3 full days of music for $125 less than a certain fest in NJ).
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:25 AM
oh, you got that right...every festival>APW...
Im hoping Lolla really step up their game this year... If the 3rd headliner was Beastie Boys, id be blown away aswell.
They did say more rap/hiphop this year.

whats the diff between today and in a few days?
sbessiso
03-25-2008, 07:28 AM
most expensive price is like 205, I don't mind waiting for the full lineup, beasties WOULD be kill, although their jamsession songs nearly killed me at Langerado (i'm just not a big fan)
circles
03-25-2008, 07:29 AM
where did you read the most expensive price is 205?
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:29 AM
ya, they should probably keep it a lil more rap at their festival sets...
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:30 AM
where did you read the most expensive price is 205?
right on the main tickets page.... 175, then 195, then 205...

want to make some credit card payments first.
I think last year prices went up to $195.
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:31 AM
sure as hell beats the near 300 bucks for Coachella.
JSam67
03-25-2008, 07:32 AM
I just doubt that the Beasties will be there. I think Perry is really trying to get a better genre mixture of top tier bands this year. Bloc Party will be great, Wilco will also be great, some rap artist(s), Nine Inch fucking Nails...who knows? I'm still not giving up on Rage.
sbessiso
03-25-2008, 07:33 AM

its just when they did their jam set, my mind started focusing on the negative, damn im tired, im fucking nauseous, so thirsty, and tripping hard, I was starting to feel like I would faint
once they kick it into their other shit though, I forget about everything and just rock out
edit: and no fucking RAGE!

if RAGEGRRR plays I don't think you guys will be seeing my fat face there, I know I know, good riddance
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:38 AM
lol....cya. If Rage are there, you can always see who is playing on the Bud Light stage, usually a big name.
JSam67
03-25-2008, 07:46 AM
Yeah, they always have 2 big bands up against each other, with the exception of the Sunday night headliner to close it all down. I really don't think Rage will be there, but if they are, they would be matched up against Wilco or Beck or someone, so no worries.
paulb
03-25-2008, 07:47 AM
Rage vs Wilco is fine by me....dont throw Beck into the situation, now it just gets messy.
sbessiso
03-25-2008, 07:50 AM
yeah its funny, I came back on here to say that IF BECK plays, you will surely be seeing my fat face there, i'll be the one wearing my beck shirt and shaking violently with excitiment (not too hard to find, no?)
JSam67
03-25-2008, 07:55 AM
sbessiso, if Beck is there, well, you won't be alone in the new pollution. I'd pick Beck over Rage, no questions asked.

Hahaha thanks sbessiso, you're definitely one of the good folks on this board (but I reserve the right to retract that statement if you don't go to Lolla). I really can't wait for NIN to melt everyone's faces, I might make it a point to trip with you for that show.

:( I know I know, but i've always been that guy, I wore my white stripes shirt to Bonnaroo on Sunday, My franz ferdinand shirt on Bonnaroo Saturday
I feel like I CAN'T not wear my Beck shirt for whenever I do see him
edit: I was a (very) late bloomer when it comes to NIN, I don't know why I didn't listen to them before, they fucking rock, and tripping? bring it on Jsam!
