I actually enjoy visiting this place. The movies, books, cds, games, it's just fun browsing.

The last day is January 31st, 2008.

They claim they are going to have a huge sale.

Here is the link to article.

Huge sale = the best merchandise gets shipped off to their other stores and the leftover crap is 20% off

Ardentbiscuit

The article claims 50% off closing sale. I doubt it's that good.

Wait why are they closing?

Edit: Nevermind I read the article. I like going in there whenever I'm in Hollywood. Damn it.

It was awesome when Tower Records closed. Everything was at least 50% off, and at the closing point of the day, they locked their doors and announced everything was 10 cents....

tower records here in costa mesa got progressively cheaper the closer to the closing date it became. started off at 20% off and by the end was at least 75% off.

It was never awesome when Tower Records stores closed.

Edit: And it's too bad another record store is closing.

what do you expect when cd's cost $18. sure it was a cool store, but there is no way in hell i would pay that much for a cd just because i enjoyed the atmosphere.

Someone who transferred from Sunset to Hollywood and Highland says this is right on the money.

When Tower got to the last day all I could find was hundreds of "Held Up" soundtracks among other bad movies and the complete Tuck and Patti library.

It was dismal at the end.

The sad part was there was a tip jar at the front counter at the tower that said, "our Christmas bonus" and there was only like 3 bucks in it. :(

I put money in..

when they closed the virgin store in Miami it was at least 50% off everything. there was crap at the end, but quality stuff the first few days. the best deals are the dvds.

Amoeba should have a picture of a giant Amoeba on the side of their building engulfing all the other record stores.

Went there today and they actually had a lot of stuff. Picked up Lolita for $14 and "We Are The Pipettes" on Vinyl.

They probably sent their stuff to Hollywood and Highlands virgin.

Hollywood and Highland store sucks. It is like a third the size of the Sunset store.

I never went there... Amoeba is so much better (or I just assumed).

kroqken

Amoeba is better but competition is healthy. It leads to various companies seeking improvements or closing due to failing to adapt to the changing times. That is why Levitz Furniture is going out of business, all of thier stores looked like they were stuck in the 1970s.

Amoeba is a great store!
But it is sad seeing these the Tower & Virgin record stores closing all over. Sad...and old...because I remember a day when you could have never imagined this.

You are right. These guys did not adapt to the changes of the marketplace.
I just get nostalgic at times. I miss Shakey's Pizza too!

As an addendum, not only is Levitz FUrniture going out of business, but now so is Wickes Furniture. What is up with these furniture stores that look stuck in the 1970s suddenly closing all at once? maybe it relates to the home foreclosure crisis.

We have a Shakey's Pizza here, but we lost our Blockbuster stores & Johnny Rockets.

There is a Shakeys in North Hollywood, CA. Straw Hat Pizza was a place from my childhood that is RIP. So is Flakey Jakes, a burger joint that used to be in Northridege, CA.

I went to the Walgreens in Monterey Park, which took the space of Tower Records, 2 weeks ago. It was just sad. Their book and magazine section was good. I would sit in there for hours.

THe Tower Records in Northridge is going to become a Wal Greens. The one in SHerman OAks is an Urban Homes furniture store. The one in WOodland Hills is still vacant.

Umm, there should really be a giant AMAZON.COM blob engulfing all the brick-and-mortars out there. By 2015 there will be no record stores left.

Even Amoeba.

I still think Amoeba is the shit. Freak Beat Records in Sherman Oaks is pretty respectable.

Last time I was in Amoeba, I bought brand new CDs for $8-$12. With that kind of competition, no wonder Virgin was hurting. Who's going to pay $18 for something they can get for $8?

On 17th September 2007, it was announced that only the UK arm of the Virgin Megastores brand is to break away from the Virgin Group. A management buy-out offer was accepted which will now see the Managing Directors taking the company on as the largest independent entertainment retailer in the UK. EUK, the company's main stock supplier, also the supplier to shops like Woolworths and Sainsburys, have helped out with the MBO by investing heavily to support the new management team. With the change of ownership the Virgin Megastores disappeared and was replaced with a new name "zavvi". All 125 stores remained trading and the change was implemented by late November 2007. In January 2008 the online system was also rebranded to "zavvi". Virgin Megastores Ireland will change to 'zavvi Ireland' in January 2008.
