So hopefully someone can help me with this---and I'm assuming that'll be a big y-e-s.

I need to know the sitch with cameras. I'm not talking your average point-and-shoot your aunt bought you at Wal Mart...I travel constantly (read: daily) with an arsenal of 35mm and medium format film cameras. It's just me.

Will I even be able to manage a crowd with a camera like that? I really want to bring them not to take pictures of bands, but to document everything else. I'm a filmophile, and would prefer to get a bunch of snazzy polaroids and pics from my Practika than some crap digital pictures.

I would be OK with bringing them, if there were in-n-out camping allowances. But circumstances being as they may...

faq is your friend:

professional cameras are not allowed.

"What are considered professional cameras and professional digital cameras?

Any camera with a removable lense."

Well, ok then my Praktica is out of the question...

But I also use polaroids, holgas, and other NON slr type cameras that wont fit in my pocket.

i was thinking of luggin my holga- but the question is...............

is it worth lugging around.........
the crowds would crush my holga.............
im sure theyll produce excellent pics............
but heat and crowds kinda ruin it...........
my 2 cents- keep the change..............

:D

The fitting in your pocket or whatever bag you have (i choose to look like a nerd and have the camera bag strapped to me) is a serious discussion you must have with yourself. A polaroid and the film to go with it can be bulky. How bad do you want to take polaroids? Respect if you do or don't.

i see you read the faq on the professional camera thing, but if you are serious about carrying that around, see if you can hook up with some way to get a photo pass. One avenue (long shot of course) for you is to get in with the USC media that tries to do some news reporting and hopefully you can work out doing coverage for them. More hopefully they have a relationship with GV and no other photographer with a history gets the slot. There would be a lot of hurdles and potential "fail" is likely, but it is worth a shot.

Polaroids? Seriously? Saying that you're a filmophile (an irritating term to begin with) and therefore into polaroids is like saying that you're a nymphomaniac and therefore you love having sex with dickless virgins (e.g. Supre).

There's something delightfully cheap and commercial about 1980s polaroids. Don't hate.

I'll hate all I please. The 80s were not cool, you weren't even fucking alive for them, stop trying to bring them back and claim it as irony or retro or whatever the fuck you're brewing a fondue about in your Different Strokes panties.

thank you.

the 80s were fucking awful. they need to be buried and forgotten like that ET atari game. the fact that people now glorify that decade just goes to show how many of us are in denial.

i won't say the 80's were awful. Too many good times. i think it weird to label decades as shitty when 10 years opens up so much time for great things to come about. i'm sure there have been defenders of the 80's before and you 80's haters have heard the praise and just ain't buying it. i won't change your mind with generic statements (or i suspect specific ones), but my time in the 80's (12-21) was pretty fun for me.

Best thread ever :P

My 2 cents on cameras:

I have to have cameras with me where ever I go too. I bring my Canon 20D SLR into the campground (no one cares if you bring it into the camping area, the guards usually get looser as the weekend goes on and by the middle of Saturday or so, you can walk in with a fifth of whiskey and they won't even bat an eye.) I also bring my Casio point-n-shoot for inside the festival for two reasons: 1) they won't let me bring in my good camera and 2) even if I could, too many things go on in there and you aren't allowed to leave so I'd rather have my $150 PnS camera die than my many-times-over more expensive SLR die.

I tried Polaroids last year. The heat ruined the film.

I was able to bring my 20D in last year. The security guards checked but did not care. They have more important things to worry about than my pseudo-professional pictures.

Excellent! Enjoy! I ordered my Nikon too late last year, and it arrived the day after I flew out to Palm Springs.... good call on not waiting until the last minute. ;)
