View Full Version : Daft Punk: Alive 2007 DVD Project (i need YOUR footage!)

HunterGather

Thought I'd finally put this info herre.
I know it prolly doesn't belong here, but I figure I'd get more views in the Lineup/Artists section :)

------------------------------------------

I'm planning on putting together a DVD of Daft Punks 2006/2007 tour.
It's going to feature video from a bunch of sources from various shows during their tour and its all going to be set and synched to the Alive 2007 album (so don't worry if your videos sound is bad).

I'm collecting footage from any show by anyone who would be as so kind to upload their uncompressed footage on the net (file sharing sites) or make a torrent or sending directly (or if need be, snail mail).

I have a mac and will author the DVD with Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro and will nerd it out with special features like multi angle sequences, animated menus, photo slideshows, and if I can do it right, 2 additional audio tracks to chose from (main one will be the album audio, 2nd will be the Vegoose audience recording of whom I forget recorded it, and the 3rd will be the original audio of the videos being viewed).

Once finished, I will make a torrent of the DVD for everyone to download and enjoy.

Basically what I need is footage in its uncompressed, full quality glory.
So if you have a DV camera, a DV file. (connect your cam to your computer and with your preferred sofware, copy the footage in DV format and upload).

If it's from a digital camera, then whatever the original file is.
Basically, I just need something that wasn't converted to a smaller file.
I could really use all the footage you got of the show (the show itself, shots of the venue before and after the show as well, after parties you may have went to, opening acts, etc.)
Basically, all footage related to the show. Don't leave out anything because you may think it was too shaky or shots of the waiting for the show to start. I could prolly use all of it.

You'll of course receive credit in the credits at the end and I'll email you when the project is done so you can download the torrent yourself.

I already have a bunch of footage, but MORE footage will add to the project as well!

So if you would like to contribute your flippin' awesome footage, get back at me and I can help you with how to upload (if you dont know how or where, but I'm sure most of you do here...)

PM me here or reply to this thread if you would like to send your footage.

THANKS!!

um... I think mbrunet is already working on this...

I put together the Coachella DVD. That widescreen footage from the mid-left side is fantastic, but sadly the taper only had about 3-4 minutes of it, total. That DVD represents the best bits of all the taped clips from the show. Kind of like I'm trying to do with the 2007 show (but I need MUCH more footage). Believe me, if you liked the widescreen Coachella footage, you should see some of the stuff that I've already collected for this disc.

maybe you two should collaborate?

I have a few clips taken with my camera with a shitty focus from the show at Red Rocks in Denver 7/31.

Send me a PM with where to upload and I'll send you the rest of what I have. It'll be up to you whether you use it or not.

I should clarify that not too long ago 'mbrunet' said he was cool with me doing it. But recently he posted in THE daft thread saying he collected videos. So i dunno if he forgot or is doing another one himself or not.

In either case, it'd be great if you send me your stuff unless he gets back at me. I believe he said he would send me his raw files he used for the Coachella dvd if he still had it.
Me thinks he doesnt stop by this forum often.

Huntergather,

I'm still down for a collabo, and have a bunch of footage. Problem is that my computer was destroyed in a flood in my basement thanks to last week's Pacific Northwest rainstorm. I'll send you the list of files that I have in an email, and then we can figure out how best to pull this off. If you have the computing power, time, and willingness to listen to people bitch about the end product because it's not pro-shot :) , you might have to do most of the heavy lifting until I get up and running again.

Gaypalm, have you ever tried to email a file as big as you're talking about? (a) I'd love to see the email account you have that lets you do so, because I don't think it exists, and (b) it'll be faster for you as well as the recipient to put it on sendspace.

I just downloaded Pando (Pando.com).

Pando brings the heavy-lifting power of P2P

Pando Benefits for Email:

* Increase your email attachment limit to 1GB, free
* Send directly from Pando OR...
* Send from within Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL Mail, Gmail, or Microsoft® Outlook with your luxurious new attachment limit
* Never clogs inboxes - theirs or yours
* Know if your attachments are downloaded and how often
* Private, secure, end-to-end 256Bit AES encrypted transfers
* Password-protected packages
* LAN-speed transfers for co-workers
* No compression, ftp, or long browser uploads

Which audio recording are you going to use? The official CD, or another show?

I just got the Vegoose recording and it's better than the Alive07 CD for the majority of the show, in case you're interested.

And best of luck with this. I put one together with youtube and google video footage, combined with some high-res stuff, back in August and it was a pain in the ass to sync it all. Sounds like you'll be working with higher quality sources though.

we'll run into trouble if we use the official cd. we can use a bootleg, a lot of people agree with you that the vegoose bootleg sounds better anyway. (that bootlegger must feel real proud.) it'll be vegoose, unless something better has surfaced from the australian shows. I haven't heard of any though. did a sydney bootleg surface at all?

Hmmm...i actually wanted to use BOTH.
But I suppose I may run into trouble putting the album audio on....

Ok, I got it...how about the default audio track is Vegoose, and the alternate audio track is the album audio. No mention of it at all anywhere.
If you want the album audio, you just switch the audio channel to 2...
Thoughts? :)

well that was a nice secret for about five minutes.

for the small number of people who will actually want it and know about it, it's not worth it. if they really want it they can put their cd on and hit play at the right moment.

Make Vegoose as default then Alive as after. The mix for Alive sucks due to the majority of sound being on the left. I coudl seeyour way of thinking though becaue its a board mix and whatnot it would translate best initially.

ooh. good work huntergather.

it'd be awesome if we had some footage from every continent in there. here's an idea -- what if there were subtitles describing which show the footage was from, and who shot it? that'd be awesome. subtitles can be turned on or off so it wouldn't get annoying.

HunterGather
01-10-2008, 06:17 PM
That was actually what I was gonna do!
For a subtitle track, it would read which show the shot is from.

And Im getting some doep DV footage from Melbourne and Tokyo soon.

Random long update/rant !...

So i had planned to edit the entire thing using Final Cut Studio's applications.
I'm still in a bit of a money crunch, so I can't afford any time soon the things to make this thing into uber pro quality.
Not that i wanted to buy it JUST for this. I'm really into editing film and motion graphics, so this would have been a nice way to put out something that I made.
But, that will have to wait.

What this means???
-No subtitle track showing location of shots being viewed (but really, aside from audience shots, it doesn't matter where it was filmed. Same show everywhere). And I need the DVD software with Final Cut to do this.

-No alternate audio tracks (I'm just gonna stick with the album audio. I was thinking about doing a compromise of the album audio and Vegoose recording, read more about that later).
I'd also need the DVD software to make alternate audio tracks.

-No super-customized DVD menus. (This is where I really would have liked to mess with. But at this point, who cares about the menus? They will be simple and to the point).

HOWEVER,....
-None of this will effect the actual main feature (the show, remember?). I still have Final Cut Express (a dumbed down version of the Pro software, which lets me edit the main feature just fine).

-The bonus features won't change.....however.... I have decided to make the contents fit onto a single layer, 4.7GB DVD.
Why?
Because, I've noticed the thing most people do when creating custom concert dvds and such, is they split the data across 2 dvds (i assume because theres alot of people who still don't have a dual layer drive; that is, able to write a dvd with 8gb of data).
Not that someone still can't burn the data. Most DVD burning software can make the contents of an 8gb DVD fit onto a 4.7GB one by decreasing the quality of it a bit.
I don't want that! The clips i've received will go through enough conversion, that it doesn't need to (possibly) be downgraded any more.

And after all this, it's defiantly gonna be done in early 09.
I've decided to rip some of the clips I want from youtube that people won't reply back to me. Only a few clips though.

ANYWAY, the reason this is taking so long is 'cause
-people take forever to upload their footage
-people say they would love to upload, but then never respond again
-i kinda have a life and school and studying to do and a job and recently moved :)

shakermaker113
12-06-2008, 09:06 AM
I'm sure you don't need professional software to add menus. or when you say super-customized menus, you mean no really complex stuff? if that's what you mean, fuck that. complex dvd menus are all fucking atrocious. all you need is a background photo and a track listing.

HunterGather
12-06-2008, 10:04 AM
Damn, did i really write all that out last night??

Anyway, Yeah. I have iDVD. Its a very nice dvd authoring program on macs. You can customize the menus, but not that way I wanted to.
I'll just have to practice on another future project.

With all the excitement of the Nine Inch Nails HD footage being released (well not so much here anyways), I almost forgot about my own damn project.

An update...

I was perfectly content with closing this thing after I got the DV footage from this guy in Australia who filmed 2 shows.
Because of a communication problem, the guy is finally gonna send me the footage this week. He was supposed to send back in late november, but there was an e-mail mix up.

In any case, in that time frame, 3 people I contacted MONTHS ago finally responded to me about their DV footage (coincidentally all in the same week!).

I've actually shut off any more input of footage that may have filmed with a digital camera, but how can I pass up DV footage???

One of the people and 2 friends of his filmed the Vegas show with DV cams from 3 different angles and are letting me use their DV tapes for this. If the stuff is as good as his hype and his sample clip, it will vastly improve this thing.

And also, this girl who filmed a show in Japan is finally getting around to ripping her DV footage for me.

So as I hope you peoples understand, I can't pass up this DV footage!

ALSO, i have been discouraged from using any "official" sources in this.
So no TV broadcasts in the extra features (ie Grammy Awards, 02 Wireless) and no Alive 2007 album audio.

I'm gonna mainly use the audio from Vegas, but am currently mixing in audio from other sources (coachella, some cam audio, aussie, etc.) to give it a bit more OOMPH and excitement and try to make it as seamless as possible.

Lord willin', march/april this will be done. Fo real this time :)

I'm not sure how much more footage you are in need of but I have some clips I took at Vegoose. I have about 5 minutes of the encore, 3 minutes of Technologic, 5 1/2 minutes of Too Long/Steam Machine. They aren't anything spectacular, but it's taken from the center and there aren't many obstructions in the way. I zoom in and out a little bit to get the full lighting in there. I did however compress the file a few months ago to make room on my old ass ibook. I never thought the clips would be seen or used for anything. Anyway, send me a PM and let me know the best way you would like the videos - or if you are even interested in them!

hope they ship asap :) thank you for your work on this. I just love this album and can't believe DP didn't even record the event -- a Blu-Ray would have sold me immediately :\

more questions on the technical side: I would say that DVD and MPEG 2 compression that it uses is not enough for a presentation like this. would you be comfortable with providing an H.264-encode of the source? please -- it would be definitely appreciated by DP fans around the world. let me know if you need help distributing it. :)

He's very guarded about this footage!

I'm doing this just for DVD. There's no way the majority of my footage (which is digicam footage) would look good blown up for 1080.
It's best to leave it for standard DVD viewing.
Even the DV footage prolly would look inconsistent with the digital camera shots.

How about an H.264 (MPEG) encode at 480p (DVD resolution) or at best 720p? Having worked with DVD authoring myself, MPEG-2 is known for introducing compression artifacts, and with a noisy/unclean source such as the DV tapes it would just degrade the quality.

In fact, the H.264 encode will be of better quality than the DVD-Video but as well remain smaller in size.

Ok, i just talked to the dude. I'm more clear on his deal now.

He's working on a edit himself and is going all out with it and making his own project with a friend of his. Strictly Vegoose footage.

Now, he wants to have the torrent seeded before anyone else starts using his footage.
He says the DVD should be done sooon, so that should be something awesome to look forward to in its own right!

Because they are so protective of their footage, they want their stuff out first before (possibly) letting me use their footage.
At the very least, all I would want is some nice steady closeups and stuff.
But understandably, they aren't just handing their shots out to anyone.

In any case, I'ma start piecing all of the stuff I have together and hopefully by the time thats done, i'll know if they will lend me some of their footage.
Not that their stuff is really necessary to what I have already, but it would be a nice addition.

I know I'm gonna get another bitchy comment from Monklish or whatever, but eh. Let's have another go at this, shall we?

This was prompted by me almost accidentally spilling a glass of water over my hard drive where I keep all the stuff I collected. I better finish this before the thing crashes or something!

This is what I sent out to the people who contributed something in one form or another:

Hey all.
You may/may not remember me.
You're getting this email because at one time or another I requested daft punk footage for a DVD project that I was working on, or you just wanted to stay informed about it.
It took so long, but.......
It's still not done! I got lazy about it and just put it off to the side. But now I want to get this organized for when it's finally done.

Follow the progress on Twitter (or if you don't use Twitter, just bookmark the page and check back from time to time) for updates and where to get it when it's done.
http://twitter.com/DaftProject

There won't be anymore notices sent to anyone after this (and would prefer to not be contacted through this email address, youtube/myspace/facebook accounts either).
This Twitter account will just be a nice way to organize everyone who has contributed or just wanted to stay updated on this thing.

Between youtube, myspace, facebook, email, and some message boards, I'd rather get everyone organized to look at one central location.

Hopefully it will be done by the end of the summer. But of course, things in life come up and get in the way (school, work, etc.).

I don't want to hype this up as the BEST thing ever. Most of the footage I got was from good digital cameras rather than DV/HD camcorders.
The original idea was just to make an updated feature based on the infamous COACHELLA DVD that came out not too long after the first Alive '06 show.
I also downgraded a lot of the bonus features I said would be on there because they were all official and tv broadcast stuff that could possibly lead to legal issues (prolly not, but why bother since since it's all on youtube anyway).
So this feature will be 100% fan created (all footage and audio is coming from fans who attended shows around the world. The album audio will not be used).

And due to popular demand, I may make a 480p or 720p copy of the main feature (for those who can't be bothered to mess with DVD's or just don't like the MPEG-2 compression).

Thanks for everyones interest and/or contributions!

DaftProject

ps: sorry if any of you got this more than once, as some of you sent stuff from more than one email, etc.
