Finals week is difficult because wasting time here is so much more attractive than a) memorizing all the different hormonal and allosteric regulators of glycolysis/gluconeogenesis/glycogenesis/fatty acid oxidation/fatty acid synthesis, and b) doing 9 chapters of fluid mechanics homework for review.

from the "poly sci major for a reason" department: this is the paper prompt that I am avoiding... the prompt is actually two pages, but these are the two important paragraphs:

Paper II Prompt

In his book The History of Sexuality: Introduction, Volume I Michel Foucault makes clear that we can only understand the history of sexuality if we also understand the nature of power, and the transformations that have taken place in the forms of political power in the last several centuries. Thus through his analysis of the history of sexuality, Foucault presents a radical and innovative understanding of power. In his lectures Omnes et Singulatim and Governmentality, Foucault develops his understanding of modern politics and power, in more detail.

For this paper, do a careful re-reading of the above three texts of Foucaultís in their entirety, with an eye to extracting his main insights about modern politics and power. In many ways, his theory of politics remains incomplete. Using the main insights about politics that you are able to cull from his texts, experiment with how they might fit together into a clear, coherent theory of politics. Where do you see the greatest tensions and inconsistencies, which of these are lasting, which are only apparent? How?

I'm pretty sure Bowie in those leggings would be more distracting than anything. And maybe not in a good way.

Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust helped. He seemed knowledgeable about historical events.

xleslie, I took your survey. Hopefully it helps.

Does it make me demented that I'm actually a bit jealous of your current situations? I would gladly go back and "deal" with finals. I found those last minute rushes to the finish exhilerating and inspiring. I found an insane enjoyment in those all nighters and a curious relief in those throw away exams (meaning the ones that you knew you were gonna just fucking fail or the ones that were useless because you were so far beyond passing.) I miss school - and I'm not just referring to the raving, drinking, and drugging.

Andrew, Micro or Macro? What are ya having trouble with?

Macro. It's just not my cup of tea. My prof is a grad student, and she just threw all this stuff at us. Like, it makes sense logically and whatnot. But I just haven't applied any of it.

Yeah, i just finished my macro final the only thing which choked me up a bit were exchange rates (depreciation, appreciation etc...).

Micro next semester... much more rigorous.

I have been trying to study all day since my sociology final. However, my neighbors upstairs think it's a great idea to make as much noise as possible by thumping and banging and generally being horrible. I have talked to them face-to-face about this and nothing changed. So I tapped on the ceiling after a particularly egregious outburst and they started fucking jumping on the floor really hard just to spite us and get the last word. That makes the second time in 24 hours that we've called security on them for being jackasses. And guess what? They're still thumping. I cannot focus because I am too mad and they are too noisy. Thanks, neighbors. You're going to make me fail my finals.

Man I can't get shit done when the people upstairs are being loud.

Fucking rude people in this world...

Courtney, do you have any suggestions on how to do this efficiently?

Art History, right?

When i took it i found that making powerpoint slides with the image on one slide and then the information on the following slide helps. And then would quiz myself on each image. I used to identify one or two specific details in each picture to help make memorization easier. I memorized them in chronological order from the earliest to the most recent, so when i was taking the test my mind would kind of flip through each slide. Hope that helps a bit.

bballarl
12-12-2007, 07:30 PM
That is helpful. Thank you. Whatever I did last time didn't work very well, and I can usually memorize stuff pretty quick. I will try the one or two detail method.

Courtney
12-12-2007, 07:33 PM
Yikes. Yeah flashcards help. Although they sort of take a long time to make. If you have everything online you can just print out each image on one sheet of paper and then write the info on the reverse side.

Also, I always would lay out my flashcards in a timeline so I could get a sense of the stylistic progression of things. That way, even if you forget everything else, you should still be able to get the date right just by recognizing that it's in a certain style.

Also stupid mnemonic devices are good. Like bad puns or rhymes that incorporate the artist name or artwork title. Or even make a little song about it. Whatever works for you.

Dude, c'mon--crib sheets. I refused to do any mindless memorization tasks for tests, they're a fucking waste of time and they don't teach you anything. Just crib up in the smallest font you can type. It's a fucking art final, it's not like the prof is going to be all hardcore about caring about cheating.

12-13-2007, 08:36 AM
Memorization is absolutely not a waste of time. Sure, it's better if you understand things conceptually, but in plenty of classes there are just laundry lists of things you have to know if you want to do well.

Also, had my metabolic final this morning. Went pretty well, I think, and now I just have my mech. eng. final at 7 pm tonight before I bust open the champagne.

When I recite them I give them a rhythm so it just becomes ingrained. Seriously, when I study it's more like tribal chanting. Also I convert them into something more unique, like a time function I had to memorize became MC Ha.

The exams that really matter are in ten weeks when I take my comps. Earning my PhD is going to make me hate reading.

Wow, I can't memorize most equations for engineering classes using only flashcards. I mean, there are some to be memorized but most of them are to be understood. Solving problems is the best method to memorize equations; at least it works well for me.

I BOMBED that Art History final. Fortunately, no one knew what they were doing, so I didn't feel like a moron. I finished it as quick as possible, got the fuck out of there, and drove home in 4.5 hours. The drive was a nice post-final exercise.

I have one more final left, and it's the typography practical exam. I'm nervous.

I got the results from my Mythology final and I have to say, I was kind of upset that I missed one question. 59/60 and the second highest grade in the class, but I'm pissed that I missed one question. What's happening to me??
