Go to Tabacon hot springs. They're at the base of Arenal volcano, which is an active lava flow. They have a good restaurant at the place, and the hot spring pools are awesome. It was my favorite place I visited in Costa Rica. Tortuguero was also amazing, but if you're going to Monteverde, that's on the other side of the country. It's a rainforest reserve, and there's tons of wildlife. You have to go up the river to get to any of the hotels, and the monkeys never shut up. It'd be just like the board!

I was there for a week a couple of years back. I was extremely disappointed with the trip, to say the least. It has become one of the most talked about destination, but I just wasn't feeling it. Part of that may be because of the group we were with, but it could have also been the fact that the humidity was absolutely crippling and the bugs were everywhere. Jaco Beach should be avoided.

With that said, from a scenery standpoint it is quite remarkable. Try to visit a volcano (like was stated above), take a rainforest tour (especially if there is a waterfall to see), and do a canopy tour on zip lines.

I've been to Jaco on the Pacific side and Cahuita on the Caribbean side. San Jose is awful, definitely spend as little time there as possible. Jaco is fun but it's a little like Mexico. If you're going there to party you might like it. Puerto Viejo is supposedly the most fun city on the Caribbean side, but it's far from San Jose so it takes a loooong time to get there. In general the Caribbean side is a lot less developed (at least it was 2 years ago) and a lot more peaceful. Cahuita is a tiny ass town and is a rad place to go if you just want to get away from it all - the rainforest leads right up to the beach so you can hike through the rainforest and see monkeys and birds and then walk 10 feet to the east and be at the beach. It's pretty awesome.

Oh yeah, I went to Arenal too. It was super cool because it was puffing out all kinds of black smoke and rumbling.

And yeah, Monteverde is on the other side of the country, and the roads are pretty bad so expect to take a long time driving and also get a kidney massage doing so. Also there are coatis all over the road so be careful, because it would be sad if something so cute got run over. I picked up strep throat and an ear infection in Monteverde, but even so it was completely worth it.

If you are going to a beach area, try to stick to a beach on the Pacific side because there's a lot less disease (mosquito-borne and otherwise) than on the Caribbean side.

In any case, I agree that you do have to pay for it.

I went to costa rica on my honeymoon last year and it was super dope. Arenal was really a nice hike but the view from the hotel we were staying at was incredible. From our bed we could watch the volcano spew ash all night long.

Puerto Viejo is still undeveloped which makes for a nice relaxing day but at night, on weekends, it turns into party city.

Finally while you are there drink lots of Imperial. The locals will try to sell you on the Rock Ice but its like drinking Red Dog.

Wheres the beef?

Be sure to stop by the Beetle Bar in Jaco for some drinks. You wont regret it.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say. Imperial is way better than Corona. There I said it.

I have one Imperial shirt and for some reason I let my wife convince me to buy a Large. Even though I have lived with myself for 26 years and know damn well I prefer extra large. I was only married for 2 weeks and this is the kind of decisions I let go of early on. Now we're talking and possibly considering skipping Coachella for StageCoach to see Tim Mcgraw and Carrie Underwood. I lost my balls in Costa Rica trying to pick a t-shirt.

san jose sucks. leave as soon as possible.

TAKE A GOOD MAP. if you are heading out of the major cities, you'll need it. 4 wheel drive can be a big plus as well.

if you are a surfer or have surfers in the group, head to Tamarindo. its a great little town on the pacific side, northern part of the country.

drink Imperial for beer. if you really want to get fucked up, order Guaro. its the local liquor there and it will FUCK YOU UP. order a Guaro Sour. dont order shots.

if you need anything else...ask the pipe vendors. they know all the deals.

zip line = fun. horseback riding = fun. please note: its best not to engage in these activities during a Guaro hangover.

watch out for monkeys and bugs. BIG bugs.

for good food and good times, head to Jaco. its relatively americanized. you can get a great lobster dinner at the place that looks like a giant palapa.

and if you so desire...go to Hollywood Jaco. its a club on the outskirts of town. there you will have your pic of many gorgeous women...for a nominal fee.

also, i like to bring stickers or shirts or something. when i travel down there, i usually end up asking the locals a lot of questions. costa ricans are really nice, but they are also really poor. something just to give away to say thanks.

oh yea

theres a town called Samara kind of in the middle of the country, on the pacific side. its a tiny little town kind of right between where the rain forest hits the beach. there are a few hotels though.

anyway, it actually has (had?) a nightclub called Club Tutti Fruti. it was so sweet. it was only open on sat. night i think. it was just a little place, but the doors opened out on the sand. the whole town came out to party. really fun.

I have been thinking about going to Costa Rica for vacation myself. I can definitely use a relaxation trip after vacationing in Europe. While researching locations I came across a Tabacon Hot Springs Spa Resort in the city of Arenal. Has anybody vacationed in this particular area? Are there any cool cities very near by? Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated. KTHXBYE.

Last time I was in San Jose I heard about 7 gunshots on the sidewalk right below my hotel window. And I was staying at a pretty nice hotel.

San Jose is not a vacation. I really don't think you want to stay there. But you're street so maybe you won't care that much.

Yo I went there and had no problems whatsoever. Went to Arenal and Tabocon Hot Springs and they were both, well, very touristy. My wife and I walked around San Jose and didnt' run into any problems at all. Stopped at a bank, it was like trying to take money out of Fort Know with the security just to get in but whatever. We also went to Limon during Carnival. It is supposed to be very dangerous because of the drug cartels and immigrants but once again whatever, everyone was just trying to celebrate the way they celebrate. A little south of Limon is Puerto Viejo, which is a chill little beach town and the locals just kicked it and blew trees and it was once again all good. Maybe because we both spoke spanish and what not but yo you can have problems just walking down the street where you come from I'm sure. So live a little and don't fear the reaper.

whoever said san jose is NOT about a vacation is right. its just a city, nothing spectacular unless you enjoy industry and commerce.

to see costa rica you need to venture out to either the coast or the rainforest. if you can swing it, go to Volcan Arenal. like everyone above said, its an amazing place. its very active and you can see the smoke and lava pouring off the sides. there are also a number of hotels in the area.

or, just go to Jaco. its got everything...booze, bitches, and beaches. its also relatively safe. last time i was there i stayed in the Best Western...cant get much more reliable than that.

i was somewhere on the pacific side. i was walking down some cattle trail to the beach, surfboard in hand. i get that weird "i feel like someone is watching me" feeling. i look over to the edge of the rainforest and there is a troop of maybe 6-8 large brown monkeys watching me.

so i kind of stop and look at them. the biggest one is hanging by its tail with a baby on its back. i really want to jog back up the trail to grab my camera. but they start moving around...looking a bit agitated. i decided to continue on toward the beach...

I've only flown into San Jose but if Liberia is closer to where you end up wanting to stay I'd recommend flying into there.

There's nothing wrong with staying in San Jose for a night. I just definitely wouldn't want to spend a week there.

And oh yeah I forgot I went to Manuel Antonio too. It's gorgeous there.

If anyone's really that worried about malaria you can get the antimalaria drugs. I got wicked sick right after getting back from Jaco, like the sickest I'd been in my life. I thought I was dying and/or had malaria. But a blood test said that I did not have malaria and was not dying.

Hey, Roberto from Costa Rica here...

Yes avoid San Josť, its just a city, a horrible city by the way )I'm from Costa Rica but I accept it), the beauty of my country is on the beaches, volcanoes or Rain Forests.
If anyone wants to come down here I inform you that AEG is producing the "Imperial Festival" (a festival sponsored by the best beer in Costa Rica Imperial, some of you know it I noiced) on April 19th and 20th. So far the 2 first artists confirmed are Incubus and Duran Duran. Rumors include Coldplay, Roger Waters, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, the Killers, the Cure and Pearl Jam. Of those bands we are expecting 2 plus some other latin american bands.
So if you're coming down here try and come on April 19th and 20th you'll enjoy great beaches and parties plus very good music.
