if everyone became indie...wouldnt it be un-indie to be indie?

will there always be enough meatheads to sustain our subculture?

isnt this a problems with all subversive groups?

i mean...seeing a kid in a black trenchcoat with mascara on used to be an odd, sorta interesting experience. but its just annoying now

Wearing a black trenchcoat and mascara is not "indie." Doing what everyone else is doing is not being independent.

A subculture based on being different doesn't make sense, can't cohere. That doesn't mean the idea of being different is ridiculous... it just means it can't start movements in the traditional sense.

A while back Pitchfork had an article on Twee (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/10242-twee-as-fuck) (music) that features this quote:

There were points where cuteness felt like a caricature, and a pose: when girls went around carrying Strawberry Shortcake lunchboxes instead of purses, being twee seemed less like a rejection of cool and more like the creation of a new, worse form of it.

and that's the situation, dread, feeling you're pondering. Or, rather, the set-up for it. There always will be people who play at alternative because they wanna be a big fish in a small pool but that doesn't mean everyone is doing that. That doesn't detract from people trying new things, innovating.

Also I keep getting off into musical sidetracks so I should probably stop after this: my point is that following others is never a recipe for being indie.

I like the Freudian revelation that DaOneManWonda is a parasite who needs meatheads in order to be sustained.

1. There's nothing subversive about indie rock.
2. The fact that you are pondering this question makes you part of the problem.
3. There is no problem.
4. Delete.

I saw a kid recently with the same faux-bondage pants, pocket chain, eyeliner and Vans as, oh, about a million other kids.

He was wearing a t-shirt that said "you just hate me because I'm an individual"!

It's irony - but on a base level...

it's sad that we actually got to a point where people are mistaking so called emo stuff with the "goth" stuff, independent music (not being in a major label) and alternative music (genre), trying desperately to be unique while failing for the fact that they are indeed TRYING (too hard, if i may add)

it's all pretty confusing.. we should listen to whatever we like, whether other people like it or not.. and dress however we like.. i have a lot of respect for people who have the guts to admit that they like something even if they know the people around them won't approve... i'm starting to get all motherly-lame on you... sorry :o

Maybe they can put Enid from Ghost World in an Indiana Jones costume, than it would be an "indie" in Indy.
