I've noticed over the years many artists playing that are usually in the Sahara tent.

For 2006 and 2007 a lot of artists playing Ultra were at Coachella in Sahara.

You should go to the WMC instead of the Ultra. During that week, you can go to some awesome parties in hotels, clubs, mansions, etc. In fact, pretty much djs/producers come from all over the world to the WMC, not the UMF. Some labels throw pretty nice parties, and there are also some festivals during those days. Take a look at the breaksfest lineup or future sounds of breaks.

UMF has the same djs every year. Look at the lineups 8 years ago, and you will see that almost 80% are the same acts than recent years,

Yeah, the winter music conference does look good. I was just trying to talk myself out of it because it's so expensive to stay in Miami for a week. But yes I do want to eventually go to the WMC and the Ultra.

I did notice that, the Ultra does book the same acts. That's why I would only go once.

Okay, okay. Good thing you vocalized this here. I think you have the wrong idea about WMC.

Sure, there is an actual WMC conference, but I don't think I've ever even known anyone to go see a panel or even go to the hotel it is held at. WMC is very similar to SXSW, except entirely focused on electronic music. For the duration of that week - pretty much from Tuesday to Saturday - amazing, amazing DJs are playing at just about every club we have.

Club Miami is relatively small, so it's pretty easy to get around. Miami Beach is like 2 square miles of clubs and Downtown Miami (right across the causeway from the beach) just barely 1 square mile, including the Festival grounds.

Ultra Fest is fun but it should not be your whole trip - if you stay somewhere that isn't South Beach, you can definitely afford to stay longer than you would've. Of all my years of attending, I've never had any event at Ultra be the best part of the week. Unless Underworld is performing, I can pretty much guarantee you'll be disappointed if you just go there.

Best parts of Ultra this year: Tiesto, MSTRKRFT, Carl Cox, Boys Noize, Fatboy Slim.

Best parts of WMC this year: Booka Shade, Richie Hawtin, Justice, Digitalism, Boys Noize, M.A.N.D.Y, Busy P and Sebastian, MSTRKRFT (much better show), John Digweed.

Ultra also has the world's worst, rudest and most unpleasant crowd of all time. Everybody is rolling and nobody gives a fuck about you. The Miami kids who don't give a fuck about music and just come to take drugs pretty much ruin it for all of us.

I recommend going to one club every day before the show (Should run you about 100 per person for 3 nights of clubbing - minus drinks). If you plan it using the right guides online - you should find something awesome for every single night. Eating in Miami Beach can be back breakingly cheap also - just eat Pizza Rustica (there's one every 4 blocks) all the time.

Maybe because Day 1 was less traditionally dance music and had The Cure and all that. Day 2's Van Dyk/Tenaglia/I haven't listened to new dance music in 5 years crowd was flat mean and ugly (thanks to them all having e-face)

The club crowds were much nicer to me this year. But nothing beats a Coachella crowd.

Well, by last year we already knew the headliner - I remember there being fliers saying only "The Cure" on them when I walked into Bang! in November.

My guess is they don't have some big departure act to announce yet. I can only hope this means they're trying damn hard to convince Underworld to come again.

LCD Soundsystem played that year too, so they're not really that out of the question either - but I really doubt these boring UMF motherfuckers would do that.

The only two surer that sure certainties are Paul Van Dyk (he always closes) and Armin Van Buuren (He didn't play last year and DJ mag named him #1). I say we get something by New Year's.

[Sidenote: As much shit I give people for ranking DJs, it's really not that different from what us music nerds do this time of year by making EOY lists. As long as they update the list every year, it's not really that farfetched a thing to rank DJs according to how excited you are about them.

Now giving them shit for voting the same people year after year, that's still fair game.]

Nobody is dictating music taste to you over at Coachella though. Don't be stupid. The point is that the Coachella crowd is, for the most part, well behaved and considerate.

I want to point out that another reason that Coachella crowds are probably more tame and normal is that alcohol remains in the drinking tents. People trying to squeeze through crowds while juggling three cups of beer accounts for about 75% of the douchebaggery in other festivals.

I'm not really looking for people to party with - just people I can talk to and won't be rude as hell. Most people say "excuse me" at Coachella. People won't steal stuff from your tents. Nobody gets into fights (or at least there is a very small amount ratio of them for the people there.)

I think most of the people on this board settled on the indie or electronic scene because it championed good taste above any kind of weird code of machismo or loyalty. I'll take our elitist attitudes over whatever rude bullshit comes with punk, hip-hop, reggae or metal scenes.

It's not too poorly run. The multiple stages, sound systems and visualizing setup can be pretty great. It's pretty rare that two things I want to see are playing at the same time.

They charge a ton for water and have a pretty rude crowd like most "massives" anywhere - but if you go for WMC, you'll probably see the same acts or better at a local club before and after the fest.

I'm pretty excited about Justice and Erol Alkan.

IMO.....ultra is just a part of it(the cherry on top). WMC last for a week and the best shows are not ultra......every huge act in the world is there for the confence and award show. u can see any act u want all week long for way cheaper and at better spots. 2 uears ago some and i friends stumbled up on a stage on the beach and the chem bros were playing on the fuckin beach. the whole week is just sick sick sick.....i highly reccomend going if u never have. every club and party has headliners from top to bottom...............

I have been to Ultra for 5 years now and honestly compared to Coachella, hands down Coachella is much better put together than Ultra is or at least has been for the past 2 years since it's been at bicentenial park instead of Bayfront..

I'll be going to both Coachella and Ultra this year, but just because Underworld and a couple others like Hybrid (who was shut down last year due to a fucking storm), Moby (who was there 3 years ago and puts on an amazing show) and because I can get on the metro and spend 2 dollars to get there.

Here's the first part of the lineup for this year's Ultra Music Festival, which is celebrating its tenth birthday, and is repeating this year as a two-day event. No surprises on the names here, except acts like Justice get moved to headlining slots. Part of me, however, *is* a little surprised (and maybe heartened) that they're pushing the old-school D&B names as a big deal. Rewind selecta!

I'm also personally excited about Richie Hawtin (who provided such an amazing soundtrack last month when FutureMob brought him down to Pawn Shop) and Layo + Bushwacka! on a big stage. Oh yeah, and M.A.N.D.Y. (I absolutelyCANNOT wait until this year's Get Physical parties at WMC) and Deadmau5, who should really be a household name soon. -- Arielle Castillo

Don't listen to that blog. they are a bunch of douche bags who really don't like Ultra. Ive personally had a feeling that the Chems may play either day since they first went on tour. It makes sense logistically cause they have no dates for like a month and Ultra lands in that time before they go to Australia. Phase 3 will be amazing. And the people who go to ultra can be asshole but you must make your own. I don't you know about you guys but when I go to a festival or a concert I go because I like the music and I want to have a good time. So its basically what you make of it. Except for the water. its 5 bucks which really sucks.

It's nowhere near as complicated as that. Basically - the park they have it in is really ugly. Food and drinks are expensive and suck. It's not poorly run so much as it is uninspired.

The sound is actually pretty good.

As for the crowd, expect a 95 percent chance of these guys, probably fighting each other after doing a mountain of coke:

i will vouch that the crowd is like that (alot of noobs with cocaine)...im from miami and have been to many ultras...i have not gone in the past few years because it became shit but this 10th anniversary line up is too good to pass up...security is pretty harsh on drugs at least last time i was there they check my gf lip baum container for x and they go through all bags and pockets and look inside cigarette cases for joints and other such things. best bet is your crotch or a girls boobs if big enough

For the record, Phase 3 last year was only about six or seven bands deep.

The only one worth mentioning out of that group is MSTRKRFT.

The only reason the promoters of this show would add someone as big as The Prodigy or the Chemical Brothers is to boost sagging sales. Considering Underworld's appeal - I highly doubt that'll happen.

I bet Phase III brings more tried and true boring people to fill out the main stage on day 1 - like Junkie XL or Audio Bullys.

That or the rest of the Ed Banger Crew. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Hey everyone. I live in Orlando and am driving to Miami for the first time ever for Ultra this year with a big group of people. I have NEVER been to a big music festival(except for EarthDay Birthday when I was like 16) or a rave. I am nervous and would love to hear some feedback on past experiences with Ultra and advice. I can not afford Coachella this year. Since Ultra is held in Florida and that is where I live it is going to be cheaper then going to California. If I could have afforded it I probably would have chosen Coachella over Ultra. Because honestly, I haven't been in the "rave scene" in a long time and if it wasn't for all my friends going I wouldn't have thought to go Ultra. But I absolutely love the music, I am just nervous about the whole "strict body search" thing. The "mean crowds" really don't scare me, it can be that way anywhere, and I plan on being with my friends, not strangers. Although, if strangers are friendly and interesting I'd love to talk to them. I have done drugs in public plenty of times, but this is such an obvious drug event, and such a huge one, just wondering how that is. Advice appreciated, thanks!

Its ok, its really chill there, just get past the security like you would anywhere else and if your a girl its even easier. Smoking at the concert is a lil tricky though cause the have lots of under covers so if your slick you can get by (ie smoke in a crowd of people most people in Miami do not care about smoking). The strict search last year consisted of them padding down your sides to see if you had guns and thats it. They had 14-16 years olds doing the searching. I had an in depth convo with them about how they don't care.

Don't let my friend Mejia convince you Goodgrl - It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that Phase III will bring another major act. Phase III usually just pillows up the lineup with a few smaller acts to make more sense of the daily schedule.

I would not count on anyone as big as the Chems to be added unless ticket sales are bad (and they're probably not.)

As for the scheduling it's always been pretty good for me.

Sets average 1 to 1.5 hours so it's easy to make the short walk to another stage and checkout a possible conflict and make the judgment without missing much.

Some sets are twice as long as that even.

The walk between stages is very brisk, unlike Coachella - where a Main Stage to Sahara walk is a 40 minute ordeal.

1.) the Music system sucks and every time I leave that place my ears feel like their bleeding for a week
2) The size of the place is really only slightly larger than a lot of rooms in my old high school
3) I know one of the managers there
4) Their lights suck.
5) They are kinda trashy
6) When I saw Justice and Digitalism at the Ed Banger party there last year the place really killed the show for me. it was really packed with realistically 100 ppl.
7) Everytime I go, I get drunk and somehow or another a bum convinces me that he watched my car and I feel bad and in a drunken idiot move I give him a 20. (i still kick myself for that).

First and foremost - Studio A can hold at least 1000 people. Uncomfortably but it can hold them.

Your ears only bled at the Justice show because Justice loves playing uncomfortably loud.

Studio A is a perfect size for a venue. It's based on the Bowery Ballroom rock show style of venue.

The lights suck but hell, it's a rock venue - not a roll till your balls fall off venue.

and Ssbeio (spelling?) the test kits are a DIY chemical testing kit. im in to meet up...ill be going on the metro..the one day of the year i use public transportation in miami just cuz its so damn convenient since im only a block from the UM metrostation so ill probably get there around 430ish maybe 5

im still a bit bummed out I can't make it to Ultra this year. It just simply conflicts with Coachella (as far as money goes).

I've got a strategy for you, sbessiso. Casually start dropping the following phrases into conversation with your co-workers.

"Oh you know, I'm so stressed because I've got all these friends coming down to go to Ultra."

"No, no - they're staying at my house and I'm not even going... I can't afford it."

"I've been listening to lots of Ultra music and I regret not buying tickets when they were cheaper"

"No! They just added one of my favorite bands to Ultra (make up a band that's been there for a while)"

Mention a variant of these for a long enough time a big amount of your co-workers and they'll eventually figure out that you want it pretty bad.
