I am going to Mates of State/Asobi Seksu on Monday.

I probably will go to Mr. Lif/The Coup on Dec 2.

I probably will miss Calexico/Annuals on Dec 5 for going to the Suns/Kings game with my friend that is in town. But I will go to Matt & Kim on Dec 6.

Possibly Emily Haines @ El Rey on January 23rd. I just saw her at the Viper Room, where she played everything from her album, and tickets were less than half of what they are for this show, so I shouldn't. But it's Emily Haines, so how can I not see her?

Maybe Polysics on January 31st.

I just saw Matt & Kim at the Trunk Space. They played 9 songs in about 30 minutes. They are not a finesse band; they are energetic and fun and we were all jumping and dancing. They were having lots of fun.

They are a keyboard and drums duo but otherwise they are very, very different from Mates of State. No soft pretty slow songs, no crazy chopped rhythms... just relentless happy poppy punk.

Also they listened to Night Ripper by Girl Talk as warm up/bumper music.

I am not going to go to the Strummer tribute on the 21st after all. I'm going to be out of town.

edit, while I'm at it, I'm also not going to be at the Panic at the Disco show tonight, either. Also, I won't be at Dierks Bentley, whoever that is. I rather doubt I'll be at Primus next week, or Brian Setzer, or Papa Roach for that matter. I might like to see Ozomatli next week, except I'll just be getting back into town and will probably be too wiped to function.

Tom, I saw Ozo over the summer and they were quite entertaining. They mixed rap, middle eastern, reggae and latin music up in a strange little cacophony (that's my new favorite word). It's hard to believe Cut Chemist used to be part of the group. When I used to live in the OC, people would rave about them all the time. I missed out.

And yeah, there are a bunch of shows that I would like to go to but can't at this particular time. It really sucks.

damien rice KILLED last night, as did the swell season and the opening kid. so so so so good. i can't wait to see him again next year. keriann, he was in a great mood last night and joked around with the audience and told us all these stories (really long story about the story behind volcano). someone yelled out happy birthday and he said "youre late!" and everyone laughed, and then vivienne started to sing, and everyone chimed in and sang him happy birthday again. he was about to play accidental babies, but he started cracking up and was like great, im trying to get all serious here and you guys are laughing. and he took that as his cue to go offstage and let vivienne do her song (london man on the motorway again). he told us a story about how easy it was to make O because he didnt give a shitt what anyone else thought of him at the time, but since then he's been very aware of what the media and everyone thought of him and his music, so he took a lot of time off and when he got to the point where he didnt give a shitt again, he wrote coconut skins. he was like "i know im all 'earnest' and shitt all the time" - and then he starts to imitate himself singing "i can't take my eeeeeyes of of youuuuuuuuu" and everyone started cracking up.

Set list was way better last night too

Cannonball
The Professor
Baby Sister
Volcano
9 Crimes
Me, My Yoke, and I
The Blower's Daughter
Coconut Skins
London man on the motorway
Rootless Tree (regular album version)
Woman Like a Man
Animals Were Gone
I Remember

Encore:

and just for the hell of it, friday night's set:

Delicate
Woman Like a Man
9 Crimes
Me, My Yoke, and I
long intro
Rootless Tree (piano version)
Cannonball
Animals Were Gone
some song I'd never heard
Elephant
London Man on the Motorway

In re: Nando's and John's discussion of the paper chase on the old board.

I love me some paper chase. "Hide the Kitchen Knives" is easily my favorite album. "Im Gonna Spend the Rest of My LIfe Lying" is my favorite song, barely beating out "Ever Since the Turn." God Bless Your Black Heart is a great album, too.

I am planning on road tripping it on up to Columbia, MO next saturday to see the Tigers play Bobby Knight's Red Raiders and then head to a little called called Mojo's to see the paper chase. Bad luck for me thought, that EITS is not playing that show for some reason.

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed by their new CD. You can read my review of it here (http://nowherenothin.blogspot.com/2006/07/paper-chase-review.html).

Do you have their EP "What Big Teeth You Have"? It's really good and features a cover of a Roger Waters song.

That is the Thursday before Coachella, though. If I am heading up Friday morning then it's a possiblity. We'll see how things go.

Also I'm not sure what I think about EITS. Jennie's cutting commentary - which i'll paraphrase as 'they're good but I don't get how they're so much better than the rest of the pack' - has me thinking. Also I need to listen to their music.

The Enon show on the 23rd is happening, as far as I know. I will not be attending because I'd much rathe see Heartless Bastards.

I thought Enon were still opening for of Montreal in some markets. I'd think the bands would be able to do their own shows in LA, though.

I don't remember why I wanted to go to that show. I didn't know either band. the Autumn Defense sound OK and I still haven't heard the Broken West. I bet Yabs will eventually put one of their songs on a mix and then I will hear them.

I'm not sure where else to post this. I'm definitely going to Rob D. this Friday (Scottsdale, AZ, Anderson's Fifth Estate). If any other Arizonans are going, I'm going to wear a Coachella shirt and I will try to get my husband to wear one too. We both wear glasses. I'm little, he's big, and we both have light brown hair. Yeah, so I did go see Rob Dickinson at Anderson's 5th Estate last night.

Locals Source: Victoria opened with an acoustic/keyboard set. I would be interested in hearing as a full band but I'm not sure I'm gonna go to a show specifically for that.

Rob played a little over an hour. He played several Catherine Wheel songs - "Heal," "Crank," "I Want to Touch You," "Delicious," "Black Metallic" and the encore, "Ma Solituda" - along with songs from his solo record and one new one.

I hung out with Henri/Vegasoasis and also met Amy/amyzz and her husband and Shawn (sp?)/downingthief. Yay.

Small version of a pic of his face:

"The End of the World" was Rob Dickinson's new song. I liked it. I bought his live CD but haven't listened to it yet. My husband told me it has "Eat My Dust You Insensitive Fuck" on it, which he did not play last night. Great show! I wish the whole band could get back together though. Even his solo songs really require an entire band.

And yeah, I finally met some people from the board. Yay!

York, Stateside Presents (http://www.statesidepresents.com/) is putting on the show.

The Clubhouse holds 640. There's a decent bar in the middle of the room, all ages area near the stage (usually) and a couple couches and tables the other side.

You can buy tickets online at Ticket Web (http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=91281).

I don't expect the show to sellout so I wouldn't rush on getting your tickets. And, hell, depending on when my friends and I have decided to drive out I/we may go to that show too in which case I could pick up your tickets some time I'm go to Stinkweeds or Zia for records.

Hi mccabe. I was thinking about checking out a Sparklehorse show. You have seen them before, correct? How were they?

I have now seen Sparklehorse and the answer is wonderful. Mark didn't say much but he played many great songs like "Spirit Ditch" "Saturday" "Knives of Summertime" "Apple Bed" and "Hammering the Cramps." Those were, even, I think, the first 5 they played. So a good mix of songs, old and new. Not the old pop hits but in my mind the catalog is near flawless. Also the closer was "Homecoming Queen" which was beautiful. I might be mixing up "Knives of Summertime" with "Sunshine" which was also performed.

Jesse Sykes and the Sweethereafter opened; they only played a couple old songs (i.e. ones not from the album which was released today) mainly because they have a new violinist and she hasn't had a chance to learn the catalog. They were good; the new album has a little more movement but it still sounded like good stuff.

So yeah, everybody everywhere see Sparklehorse and rejoice.

Not that I am aware of. But I tell you what, I grabbed a batch of GA and was waiting for it to sell out to re-sell, but if they are opening and you were left out because of a sell out, I'll give you one or a pair that I'm holding for face-value if you'll need. Are you from Vegas?

Who are your favorites in Coachella '07?

Rage, The Roots, Placebo.

I'm actually quite open to listening to artists I've never heard. There are only a handful of acts that I'm really set on not missing. Other than that, I plan on making new favourites there. :)

Sweet. For some reason I thought they were playing in a couple of weeks but are actually playing this Friday which sucks for me. I listened to their latest release today and it really impressed me. What else would you recommend?

I'm so excited to see them at Coach.

I can't answer that succinctly.

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot was the first and is probably my favorite. It is through and through an album; a whole that is of one drive and design. It is sparse, slow, sad and beautiful. But beautiful as in real and true rather than glossy and pretty. "Someday I Will Treat You Good" is one of the best songs I have ever heard, musically and lyrically (counted separately or together.)

Also, as I just learned:

The album was largely recorded with musicians who played with the band Cracker, for whom Linkous worked with at the time as a guitar tech / roadie and a sometimes collaborator. In fact, most of the album was produced and recorded by David Lowery (of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven) under the pseudonym "David Charles."

Good Morning Spider is a little more aggressive and more full in sound. It's a very different album than the debut but still very much the work of the same guy. This might be where I'd point newcomers - more remarkable than the newer albums but not as much of the delayed/destructed joy of the first one - but since you know the new one I'm not sure.

The 2001 album, It's a Wonderful Life is really good but not my favorite. It has a song with Tom Waits and another with Polly Jean Harvey. Also Nina Persson. The guests are mainly because Capitol finally started wondering wtf and tried to get him to be more like a normal band. It's still Sparklehorse, though, no doubt about that.

I mean, honestly, I have no idea how those first two records were released on Capitol.

Damn I love this band.

The Warfield, as you probably know, has the GA floor. This means that I will be roughly in front center when Iggy flings his sweaty corpse at me in the middle of "Down on the Street." How lovely.

Suck my balls Bradley.

Thank you very much J. I'm going to check out Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot tomorrow. Also I found this little tidbit from a Sparklehorse fansite: (http://www.sparklehorse.org/biobkg.html) "Before Mark got signed by Capitol, he worked as a chimney-sweep and a house-painter. However after his then manager played what he had recorded to an A&R girl at Capitol, the A&R girl played it to the president of the company, and Sparklehorse was signed without having to play a showcase."

Classic record deal story.

I didn't know sparklehorse's music when I went tonight, and I left the concert a fan. They have really good songs, and I really enjoyed the arrangement as well.

damien rice KILLED last night, as did the swell season and the opening kid. so so so so good. i can't wait to see him again next year. keriann, he was in a great mood last night and joked around with the audience and told us all these stories (really long story about the story behind volcano). someone yelled out happy birthday and he said "youre late!" and everyone laughed, and then vivienne started to sing, and everyone chimed in and sang him happy birthday again. he was about to play accidental babies, but he started cracking up and was like great, im trying to get all serious here and you guys are laughing. and he took that as his cue to go offstage and let vivienne do her song (london man on the motorway again). he told us a story about how easy it was to make O because he didnt give a shitt what anyone else thought of him at the time, but since then he's been very aware of what the media and everyone thought of him and his music, so he took a lot of time off and when he got to the point where he didnt give a shitt again, he wrote coconut skins. he was like "i know im all 'earnest' and shitt all the time" - and then he starts to imitate himself singing "i can't take my eeeeeyes of of youuuuuuuuu" and everyone started cracking up.
