Anyone seen shows there? It looks like a scummy punk dive, anyone know how the sound is?

Its just a really small place to see a band of DJ, I would go if I were you.

OUTDOOR SHOW WITH EAGLES OF DEATH METAL!

Pappy & Harriet's Sunday, June 7

Despite their catchy name, Eagles of Death Metal features neither Don Henley nor Tom Araya. Instead, the band is a side project of the Queens of the Stone Age that sounds like bluesy garage rock. QOTSA leader, Josh Homme, plays drums and performs under the pseudonym, Carlo Von Sexron. Homme’s childhood friend, Jesse Hughes, performs on vocals and guitar. Dave Catching plays guitar..and it's his Birthday!

Well, I think it's all because of the cost. We are in a recession and Live Nation rapes you with fees worse than Ticketmaster. $75 for a Lawn ticket is simply TOO expensive for Weenie Roast... that is what people were paying for a entire day at Coachella.

yeah but, tickets to coach were 120 a day, plus you had two drive about 2 hours from LA.

To the 2 people who care: Van Morrison was good tonight. He did a hits set first, which was jazzy and bluesy and decent. Then 'Astral Weeks' in its entirety that was incredible and magical. Yeah, he doesn't quite sing like he did in his '20s, at times kind of a combination of his old self and Will Ferrell doing Robert Goulet. But it was still awe-inspiring watching such a hugely influential legend in the flesh.

Talked to Daniel Stern on the way down to the bathroom during the intermission, random.

You're misunderstanding the map...I think you thought the white area under where they show the loge and mezzanine is the floor, when actually the floor is the map on the left where there appear to be at least 50 tickets left, no way to tell how many more than that there are.

Sorry to hear that dude. How many songs did Iggy do?

Iggy was tight...Chad Smith on drums, Flea on bass, Steve Jones on guitar...that was the one glimmer of light throughout the night. They played a few songs that I didn't recognize and ended with "The Passenger" which almost makes me feel guilty for bitching about the show because that's a fucking great song.

Kiedis came out and played with "The Insects" (Flea, Chad, Ron Wood, a few others) and they played a bunch of covers...the Yardbirds' "For Your Love > Cream's "Spoonful" > the Kinks "All Day and All of the Night". They were good. I was in a happy mood because I was expecting at least a 1/2 hour out of the Mars Volta to close the show. And suddenly....................done.

I saw Spectrum with Entrance and Abe Vigoda tonight. Entrance opened, and they were their usual psychedelically amazing live selves. They rocked it, and a good portion of the crowd was there just for them. One of the new songs was really really dancey, so that was cool. Abe Vigoda played next, and I was shocked at how far they've come since I last saw them. They're no longer a group of ramshackle joyous kids playing around up there. They've cleaned up the sound, Michael's improved as a singer, they've all gotten better at their instruments and they're writing songs that sound fantastic. All of a sudden these little guys have jumped back into my high esteem. Love it. Spectrum was really cool. Full band, and they did the classics: Transparent Radiation, Suicide, Mary Anne, How You Satisfy Me. And, they also did a badass cover of Mongoloid, which Pete said was the first song he'd ever learned on guitar. The band he has with him is really good. Catch them while you can.

Iron & Wine was fantastic tonight. I felt privileged to be in that room with him. I ended up getting third row, almost center, and at times it felt like he was just playing in my living room. The sound was absolutely perfect, and the audience was so respectful and responsive that you could hear a pin drop throughout the whole show. I didn't recognize a good portion of the songs he played tonight. LA voted on kind of a weird set list. Even Sam commented that we voted for all slow songs, but whatever, he was cool with it being a chill set. What was not chill however was the lack of ventilation in that room. It was remarkably hot inside, for being rather cold outside. At times it made me want to go to sleep, which was funny as I fall asleep to Iron & Wine every night. Almost fell asleep to him live tonight!

He was very talkative as usual, and after every song he'd stop and ask who voted for that one. The Masonic Lodge is a freaking TIGHT venue. There were classic movie posters all over the walls and at one point Sam asked us if we liked any of them. Someone yelled out "What's your favorite?" and he immediately shot back "Twilight." Everyone burst out laughing and then we all went on a five minute Twilight semi-rant. He said he's never seen it but his daughter loves the books and carries them around all the time. I asked him if that's why he said yes to his song being in the movie and he said something along the lines of they pay me a lot of money for that. He was like "Everyone go watch Twilight. And if you like it, buy the soundtrack." It was a very funny moment. Then he asked if anyone had seen it and I am not proud to say I was too embarrassed to put my hand up. I think I saw about 5 people in the whole audience raise their hands.

But yeah, fantastic set. I'll post some pics and videos of Trapeze Swinger and Flightless Bird soon.

Just got back from Iron & Wine at the Troub tonight. Definitely liked last night's vibe and set list better. I think I knew about 4 or 5 songs tonight out of about 15 or 16. Pretty sad. Sam forgot even more lyrics tonight. He played another really old song that he said he had never played in front of an audience before. Don't know the name of it. Also played a new song which I *believe* was the same song he played last night but I'm not certain. He said it took him 12 years to write. He played Boy with a Coin and Such Great Heights which he didn't play last night. Tooooonnnns of slow songs again. He didn't understand why we wanted such a chill set list. He said Seattle had way more rockin songs, which makes me think they probably got Freedom Hangs Like Heaven, which we didn't get again. He didn't play Woman King tonight, Bryan. And no Flightless Bird either, which was interesting. For at least two super rare obscure songs he asked who voted for them and not a single person in the audience raised his hand. That happened one or two times last night, too. I don't know how that was possible. Weird.

The opening band Yogoman Burning Band was super fun. Way better than the chick who opened last night. They were a very upbeat hippie ska type band with trombone, sax and trumpet players, bass, guitar, and the singer sat center stage playing drums. They danced a lot and the singer also had his 5-year-old daughter out there with her own mic singing backup. Super cute. I would have liked to see them out in the middle of the day at a festival near the beach or something. They had that kind of vibe. They were from Bellingham (?), Washington. They're playing in a warehouse in downtown LA tomorrow at 6 pm.

No pics or video tonight but I'm sure it'll be up on youtube in no time.

Again, not that anyone cares, but for the one or two of you who do - the Dead were good last night. Went on right at 7:45, played for an hour, took a 45 minute intermission, then played for another hour and 45 minutes. Smoked a j with a friend in the parking lot (yeah, typical, I know) and was pretty out of it for the first half of the show.

Here's the setlist from last night:

I: Viola Lee Blues > Bertha > Viola Lee Blues > Caution > Viola Lee Blues, Black Peter, Cosmic Charlie
II: Jam > Shakedown Street > New Speedway Boogie > Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain, Drums > Space > Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star > Satisfaction
E: One More Saturday Night

TallGuyCM

They actually sound great without him. Warren Haynes from Allman Bros/Gov't Mule filled in for Jerry's spot, and some of the songs took on more of his scratchy southern-rock vibe, but overall they sounded just like the Dead. Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain was incredible, and Wharf Rat was the highlight of the night.

Well, that's good to hear. I never saw the Dead, but I've seen Ratdog, Phil 'n Friends and Donna Jean (her band was touring along with Dark Star Orchestra, and she sang her Dead songs with them during their set). I've also seen Phil, Bob and Warren Haynes perform with Phish at various times at the Shoreline Amp.

she has a great voice, and it was really sweet that she tours with her dad as backup, but for about 2/3 of the set she brought one of her girlfriends out to sing backup and this chick was just horrible. like generic high head voice for girls. i don't know if that explains it enough. but it totally killed the set for me. it was so distracting that i just tuned out. then she left and alela played another two songs with just her dad and there was a noticeable difference.

i'd give her another try if her friend wasn't with her.

also her dad played mandolin but i didnt like how they used it in the songs. he would play it as the actual main string instrument instead of just little embellishments here in there, which i like more. gives the mandolin more emphasis. oh well.

The Vaselines are the second cutest band in the world, behind Belle and Sebastian. they have some of the best stage banter: "It's never too early to talk about muffs."

They opened with Monsterpuss, and they did all the songs from the two EPs, as well as a selection from their album, and two new songs. One of the new songs was in the vein of the regular Vaselines song and the other one was more psychedelic.

Monsterpuss
Son of a Gun
The Day I Was a Horse (a song about taking LSD and thinking you're a horse)

New Song #2
Oliver Twist
Lovecraft
Sex Sux (Amen)
Teenage Superstar

Encore:
Rory Ride Me Raw
You Think You're a Man
Dum Dum

That looks about right. I think that's close to the order. I know the Encore is in the right order and the first 6 or 7 are right. I got fuzzy in the middle. All in all, they probably played for 1:15

The Shins' new album is purported to shy away from the slow ballad style material that they explored in the past. Mercer has said that the lyrics will be more upbeat and incorporate a faster tempo.

I did like the Delta Spirit, but they reminded me of The Devil Makes Three, only not as much fun.

Boots and Sand

Ruins - this was on the list next but he left the stage after Boots & Sand

and came back for the ridiculous encore:

Father and Son

Peace Train

Peace Train was off the hook! everyone was SOOOOOOOO excited for that one and since there was no percussion during the set the whole audience spontaneously provided the hand claps during the chorus which made it such a uniting song and vibe and ended on an incredible note. i would have DIED if his version of peace train was like the one in the video above, but it's a trade off to be that close to the man. it left me on such a high. freaking fantastic.

Just wanted to add this to our time capsule of a thread.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - With a wry nod to his problems with American immigration authorities, British folk singer Yusuf Islam performed his first U.S. concert in 33 years on Monday, treating 400 fans to classics from his youthful days when he was known as Cat Stevens.

The 60-year-old musician treated the invitation-only crowd to an hour-long set that included such hits as "Peace Train," "Wild World" and "Where Do the Children Play?" as well as a selection of tunes from his new album, "Roadsinger."

Looking professorial with his full gray beard, checkered shirt and sleeveless jacket, the bespectacled singer sprinkled his performance with lighthearted banter.

"I bet you thought we'd never make it," he said at the outset, later explaining that he was referring to his 2004 deportation from the United States after his name appeared on a "no-fly" watch list designed to weed out suspected terrorists.

Islam, who became a Muslim in 1977 and abandoned his pop star life, ran afoul of authorities who alleged he supports charities that ultimately funnel money to terrorist groups.

Islam denied the allegations and has frequently spoken out against terrorism. He has since returned to the United States on several occasions.

But he encountered bureaucratic difficulties on his current visit. An unspecified work-visa issue forced him to cancel a planned May 3 show in New York, leaving Los Angeles as his sole American date.

He has said he plans to perform a handful of shows around the world to promote "Roadsinger," only his second mainstream pop release in three decades. But no dates have been announced beyond the American pair. It was not known if the New York show would be rescheduled.

Islam last performed in the United States in early 1976, by which time he was becoming disenchanted with his pop career amid declining sales. After a London show in 1979, he focused solely on his family and faith.

He made a tentative return to the pop world in 2006 with the album "An Other Cup," and promoted it with an intimate London show that was filmed for a DVD.

Monday's show at the El Rey Theater, which was organized by the record label, was also filmed. Accompanied by a four-man band, Islam sang and played his acoustic guitar. A number of celebrities attended the show, including Irish actor Colin Farrell and singers Josh Groban, Chris Isaak, and Michelle Branch.

Many songs were greeted with standing ovations. During the two-song encore, they cheered the line "Look at me, I am old but I'm happy" from "Father and Son," and clapped along to "Peace Train."

Lucky Lucky Lucky.............especially if this doesn't end up being a full fledged tour......since I wasn't alive in 1976 the last time he played in the U.S., that really was a once in a lifetime experience as far as I'm concerned!

Dunno if this was posted.

Jay-Z and Ciara:

(from Billboard)

Jay-Z and Ciara are planning a summer tour together, the former's representative has confirmed to Billboard.com.

"I will say it because the information has been leaked. Me and Jay-Z will be doing a 10-city tour run together! More details coming soon! [sic]" Ciara revealed on Twitter Monday night.

The full itinerary has not yet been announced, but Jay-Z's rep did say it won't be a 10-city tour, although she wouldn't confirm if it was more shows or less.

Still, a few dates and venues have already been revealed, including stops July 3 and 4 at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, July 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, and July 12 in Atlanta.

Before the Jay-Z tour, Ciara will support Britney Spears on the European leg of the "Circus" tour in June.
