The Decemberists were incredible last night, even if they didn't really do any fun audience participation type things they are getting known for. Well, they did do a crowd sing-a-long on 16 Military Wives, dividing the crowd into four groups and directing each group to sing "da-dee-dah, dee-dotty-dotty-dah" on cue. They freaking started off with The Tain, all 25 minutes of it. Then into The Crane Wife, Pt. 3 and then Yankee Bayonet. The aforementioned 16 Military Wives was awesome, as was Sons and Daughters, a completely rocking version of The Island..., and show closer Mariner's Revenge Song.

My Brightest Diamond opened. Singer Shara Worden often reminded me of Bjork and, at times, Tanya Donelly. Worden flung herself around the stage and stomped and shouted and yelped her way through a great set. So much so, that at one point, she slipped on the stage and fell -- HARD -- on her back, in mid-song. She hopped right back up and kept on playing, like a true trooper. This was the second time I had seen them; the first was when they opened for DeVotchKa last fall, and they impressed me even more. The second to last song of their set was a spot-on cover of Led Zepplin's "No Quarter" that was far better than it had any right to be.

Since when does everyone think the Shins are good live? What happened!?!?!

Their sound is being mixed much better. And they have Eric Johnson (of the Fruit Bats) playing with them/as part of the band. James has long been above average at audience interaction. Maybe replacing Neal with Dave was a turning point in their live show. I've seen them twice with Dave and they were both better than the twice with Neal. Though that could've just been a sound issue.

I mean, they're a pop/rock band. They're not going to be screaming and jumping crazily but they're entertaining. I rather like their music so I'm going to enjoy it live.

I'm going to see Deerhunter and the Ponys tonight.

This is tomorrow night for me.

Deerhunter only skipped one song I was wanting to hear ("Fluorescent Grey") so it was a good setlist.

I think they're much better live than on record. Their live sound is most like their song "Adorno." Poppy repetetive bass-lines, lots of background guitar noises, chanting lyrics... The lead singer also does a lot of live vocal looping a la Animal Collective

As expected, Muse destroyed 'em all (well, we fans did on the front PIT barricade - the show was temporarily stopped) @ Edgefest 16 today.

Placebo was hauntingly mesmerizing and brilliant. Don't miss them @ Coachella. And my favorite Kaiser Chiefs did not fail to entertain me with their energetic and good sounding performance. I did not even make an attempt to try watching what's that band name? ... Fair to Midland which was also scheduled to perform in the festival.

Virgin Mega Store also sponsored an autograph signing thing like what they do in Coachella. I let Muse signed in my OoS CD cover artwork. They are not really sure yet as to what day they are playing in Lollapalooza when I asked them. (Kaiser Chiefs was performing when they scheduled the Muse signing so I really have to be quick. Good thing that I have the VM wrist and able get in front that I still caught more than half of KC's performance despite of the big crowd scattered in the park and in-between the main stage etc & smaller stage where KC performed.)

Dom (the drummer) is so funny with his Spiderman outfit when they performed.

gonna have to agree with brad on this one. i don't remember him even acknowledging the audience. buuuut it was at a festivalish thing at a really large venue. i can see how they have the potential to be much more enjoyable and less intimidated at their own show in an appropriately sized venue.

A little defensive? Jesus, chillax. That's cool you didn't find out through Pitchfork. It gets annoying when bands become the biggest thing ever because P-fork talked about them, whether they are really good or not. This isn't some "I'm so cool, look at my taste" thing. Fucker.

ThomThom

I sense a real hatred towards pitchfork, anytime someone says...

"I saw ______ and really liked them!" or
"I just listened to ______ and it's one of my favorite cd's!"

Did something happen between you and pitchfork that we should know about?

I'm just tired of their tastemaking abilities. They have suggested some good music in the past, but sometimes it really isn't all that. I'm tired of the pretentiousness. I still read it for tour dates and stuff, but I skip the writing.

I too utilize them for their tour and album release date info and stay away from their reviews, but you realize that there are many people that like a band or their album because they genuinely like it? The world doesn't revolve around Pitchfork.

I am very aware of that, yes. Sometimes, however, it seems like the indie world does revolve around Pitchfork. There was an article awhile back about how their impact really can't be denied (in terms of sales...etc), and I think that is a shame.

You do have a good point there, I myself have experienced a couple of my friends falling under the spell of PF, particularly when The Knife's "Silent Shout" was named the best album, I think a comment like "because pitchfork told you to like it" is a bit harsh on some people who say they like a particular band, maybe just use it when somebody makes NME comments like "They changed music" or "EPIC!"

bballarl
04-16-2007, 11:36 AM
I wasn't trying to be harsh. I found the timing interesting. I admittedly dl'd the album based on the Pitchfork recommendation for 2 reasons:

1. Increases Oink ratio
2. They mentioned "shoegaze", "fuzz" and "white noise" in the review. These are all things I enjoy.

I thought it was good. So I'm not saying he was lame for liking the band or something. I just thought the timing was interesting, as I had never heard of the group before last Thursday or Friday or whatever. He was obviously more clued in than myself, and good for him.

Pitchfork is useful for news and tour dates. Their reviews are as flawed as any other album reviewing media, because they rely solely on the subjective opinion of one person. For example, they gave Save Ferris's album with the "Come on Eileen" cover something like a 9.5 because the reviewer happened to have a major ska-pop boner at the time.

There definitely is a Pitchfork-effect in relation to the online music community's collective tastes, but the same thing could be argued about the negative aspects that blogging has contributed to pushing artists like Cold War Kids into the picture (oddly enough, Pitchy seems to loathe the CWK).

But for the most part, people will always be influenced by outside sources when it comes to new music. It's an absolute rarity the days that someone actively goes out and tries to discover new sounds for their own tastes. Pitchfork is hardly the devil in the bigger picture.

I almost always download something that Pitchfork puts as best new music, because that means at very least it warrants a listen. They like many things that I don't like, and vice versa. However, that doesn't mean they don't offer something.

And Andrew, me and pitchfork, it's just a fling. You know that.

I see your point. But one would say Nirvina was bigger and better than Sublime ever was. Plus I didn't grow up here so I wasn't here during their heyday. I don't mind the Snoop Dogg revelry though.

Asleep in the Sea played a great setlist. They're funny. They've got one show left.

Deerhunter were next. They were great. Loud and psychadelic and noisy. The two guitar bit was used quite well. They made me think a little of the Black Angels but they were less groovy and the vocals were quite different. The drummer was pretty awesome, especially on the first few songs. The crowd was mostly here for them.

The Ponys were good too but not great. They were a little more melodic, more pop. Quite a bit more chunk. The drummer was probably quicker but much more repetative (though this fit the songs so this isn't necessarily a complaint.) They were tighter than the openers too.

Does anyone go those shows at the modified John? It seems like you always score great pics from there.

This one was actually fairly well attended. Maybe 120 people were there during Deerhunter.

It almost always has a very mellow vibe, though. There was a good turnout but it wasn't crowded; we were able to move freely about the venue without fear of losing our spot.

I have been to sold out shows there (which is somewhere 200-250) where people sit/stand in the front row all night (like that final Dismemberment Plan tour and the Pedro the Lion show [which I went to for the Stratford 4 and Ester Drang] a couple years ago) but I've also been to shows where bandmembers outnumber the nonbandmembers.

This is why I think twice about going to "big" shows like the Shins at a 2600 seat venue. No matter where you are you're never gonna be in as good of a position as at a small venue like the Modified.

I don't bother to take pictures from behind people if there's good room to move. I'm trying to keep them from being boring. Really, I am.

Came back from Klaxons at ExPlx a couple hours ago, that was insane. The crowd got pretty rough and there was crowd surfing? Its a really nice place and definately go to ExPlx if there is a show you want to see. The Deadly Syndrome opened up and they are really fun to watch, they had these cardboard cut outs of ghost and they had mustahces and stuff drawn on their faces. So yeah Klaxons was fun, They played the entire cd, just in a diff order. I got to meet the band afterwards too. If you bought the cd you got this laminate to be able to met them afterwards. They are all really nice especially Jamie, he sat down next to me and we just started talking about the show and Coachella and random things. He really wants to see Willie Nelson on Sunday. Alright so some photos, time for sleep.

Oh my fucking hell Sunset Rubdown were fantastic live. I will see Spencer in any band he comes by in.

Pics and a sensible review later.

The opener was Katie Eastburn from Young People. She was up there alone playing a keyboard and with a small kickdrum. She closed with a Prince song. Her voice reminded me a lot of Erin McKeown. But her songs are rather different from Erin's.

Sunset Rubdown played 10 songs. I recognized four of them. So the others were either new or from stuff other than Shut Up I am Dreaming. They were way louder than expected.

Spencer talked about the Tapes 'n Tapes show going on a few blocks down the road, said that he'd understand if we slipped out. Later he said he didn't know who they were. Someone from the crowd said "they're even worse than Pavement." I didn't know what to say.

I was actually considering going to that show afterwards since Sunset Rubdown came on around 9:25 but my friend texted me that Tapes 'n Tapes started at 10:15 and Sunset Rubdown didn't end until 10:25.

They closed with "The Empty Threats of Little Lord" which was stunning and wonderful and I loved it. OK bye.

I saw the Lemonheads tonight at the El Rey. Alright crowd considering the circumstances (Coachella week, etc.) Really good show. Definitely see them at Coachella if you aren't into Rage. Surprisingly loud. They opened up with a cool noisy jam thing where they were just rocking out. Sounded really really good. Evan did a mini-acoustic set too. They played "Confetti" so I was happy. Awesome show though.

Be prepared to be amazed. Also, if there's a specific area that people from backstage go to smoke cigarettes, hang out there (given that they can't smoke inside the venue). Washington state is a real bitch about it, but as a result, I got to meet Air, so whatever. Kate Havnevek is a lot of fun (the opener).

So I went to M Ward/Norah Jones last night. We got there 15 minutes late (at 7:45), and were only able to see three M Ward songs, which pissed me off royally. That's not fucking rock'n'roll. He was the main reason we went. I could give two shits about Norah Jones. I didn't recognize a single song she played. But, as it was a Valentine's Day present to the woman, I sucked it up. She has a good voice. I liked the songs she played guitar on the best. The whole piano bar/lounge singer shit is brutal. She should rock out more. Anyway, we lef tearly.

The worst part is I missd both John Vanderslice and Electric Six (separate shows) for it. CYHSY was also supposed to play at a different venue that night, too, but fortunately they cancelled, so hopefully I'll be able to see them when they reschedule.

I am seeing the Starlight Mintsw on Friday.

Hearing "Aenima", "Forty-Six and Two", "Schism" and "Vicarious" amid other songs was just absolutely fantastic. They did, however, have to skip 1 song (I'm assuming it was "The Pot" or another song off of 10,000 Days because of the graphics that were playing) due to technical difficulties... Oh well... Still, the Chilis, Rage and Tool in the same week... My childhood dream is accomplished....

FANTASTIC! we talked about his new album, coachella *tee-hee* he said he had a great time. I told him GV better book him for next year and give him a top spot, he agreed 100%. As with every show I 've seen of his, he has so much energy and the conversation was just like that, all smiles, happy as shit......pure excitement. Then he was off to do his thing on stage. He had everyone in the place going crazy, not one person standing still. I was really surprised to see how many people were there, it was almost a sell-out crowd. It's a small venue but non the less it was packed.

J-Boogie.......SUCKS! OMG shut the fuck up when you are onstage.

Vibesquad....he has skills. He comes correct with his beats. I really think he should have been before Jboogie for the simple fact the few people that were there that early were shakin their asses off. Im really excited to see more of him in the future.

Awesome, I just went to the Ford's website and got a ticket in the FF row, which is 6 rows from the stage. I'm not bummed that I missed them at Coachella anymore.

Congrats! Yeah, I missed them too at coachella but did check them out at the troubadour in January which was an amazing show...

FANTASTIC! we talked about his new album, coachella *tee-hee* he said he had a great time.

Silversun Pickups/Elf Power is actually sold out! They're playing the Clubhouse which holds 640 and just a couple months ago they played the Modified which doesn't hold half that and there was plenty of room to move.

It was around then, I think, though, that I first heard "Lazy Eye" on 103.9 or whatever that station is now. Is MTV hitting this too or is it mostly radio coverage getting the word out?

I bought my ticket early, though, cause I thought something like this might happen but damn I didn't actually expect it to.

I really liked Elf Power yesterday. They played songs from most of their catalog. I'm pretty sure I heard "We Dream In Sound" and one of the last songs was "Skeleton." They also covered T Rex's "Twentieth Century Boy." Andrew's voice was very clear. I bought their new album on vinyl. It is pretty.

Silversun Pickups were next. They sounded alright. From what Brian said this was their first big headlining show. Not counting Coachella, I guess. They seemed genuinely surprised and a little overwhelmed by the turnout and response. Which were both very strong.

Also I have decided that I'm not terribly fond of what Brian does with his voice live and I think I'm starting to agree with the guy I stood next to at JAMC what said that they might could use another guitarist.

They were good, though. And when they left ater playing an hour (including playing their hit "Lazy Eye") they got a encore warrenting response and came out and played three songs from the Pikul EP including "Comeback Kid" and their cover of "Creation Lake" with Nikki on vocals to close out the night.

I did not bring my camera so no pics. I wouldn't've gotten anything good anyway as I wasn't near the very front row.

OK, so I saw Starlight Mints on Friday night. They were quite good, but it was my least favorite of the three times I'd seen them; last time was two years ago with Pleasant Grove at the Creepy Crawl and three years ago with the Flaming Lips. The crowd was sparse - maybe 75-100 people, so I think that affected the energy of the night. They were good, nonetheless, and played everything you'd want to hear. Everything, Now! opened the show and were pretty good. They seemed like they had only been together for a short while, still working on the practical issues of how to start and live stop songs.

I didn't get very good pictures, owing to the bright lights they put right up in the front of the stage.

This was pretty much a perfect setlist for me. I mean, sure they didn't play my favorites from the first three albums but I've seen those all before. What I hadn't seen was stuff from the new disc, which I actually know well. The crowd (maybe 600, 700 people in 1000 capacity, GA seat-free place) didn't seem so enthused by the Baby 81 heavy set but they didn't get ugly about it.

I really liked that they did the Peter and Nick and the other guy can take a break while Robert does a couple songs by himself and then he can take a break while Peter comes out for a song (with the stage lights off) rather than taking a full encore break. I also like that they closed with my favorite from the new album.

The Black Angels played a strong 45 minute opening set, deep and heavy. No "Manipulation," though.

Since you mentioned Mezzanine doesn't really fit in very well with those places. They're generally electronica and or sometimes hip hop. The list for those is massive

at. AT. and lest there be any doubt, we can determine further it's a venue: "PIT tix" (granted the all caps may have thrown you off, thinking it was in Pennsylvania or something) and "nice comfy loge seats".

seriously amy, how could you possibly not have figured out (at the very minimum) that MSG is a venue?

I don't live in New York, and I've never been there, so that acronym doesn't register with me.

Madison Square Garden, often abbreviated as MSG, known colloquially simply as The Garden, has been the name of four arenas in New York City, United States. It is also the name of the entity which owns the arena and several of the professional sports franchises which play there. There have been four incarnations of the arena. The first two were located at the Northeast corner of Madison Square (Madison Ave. & 26th St.) from which the arena derived its name. Subsequently a new 17,000-seat Garden (opened December 15, 1925) was built at 50th Street and 8th Avenue, and the current Garden (opened February 14, 1968) is at 7th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, situated on top of Pennsylvania Station. The present arena is informally known to some by the advertising slogan "The World's Most Famous Arena".

The arena lends its name to the Madison Square Garden Network, a cable television network that broadcasts most sporting events that are held in the Garden, as well as concerts and entertainment events that have taken place at the venue.

Why would I Google it if I thought it was a band name? I doubt Google would have not very well-known band name acronyms.

Again, I didn't want advice. I just wanted an answer. Which I got, Thank you, ThomThom.
