Looks like they are elsewhere until the end of August, so...September? Isn't that also when the My Bloody Valentine US tour is supposed to happen?

Oh man, imagine if both played ACL. Of course, since it is ACL, they would both play at the exact same time.

Ra Ra Riot was fun tonight, I can def. see a future for this band. Great energy. I also liked the opening band The Morning Benders, they are really good, check this tour out if you can, The Little Ones were not bad either. GOOD GOOD NIGHT.

From Sigur Rós:

http://sigur-ros.co.uk/news/

more summer shows
3 April 2008

we have just added several recently announced summer concerts and festival appearances to the tour page. concerts in america, germany, belgium, italy, france, england, scotland, norway, sweden and ireland have so far been announced with more to come.

I really want some California dates.

We can only hope for CA dates...

Maybe they will be added to Outside lands..

nice. report back here and let me know what kind of stuff they played and how their sound was (they generally bring their own system).

Autechre was good, but not great. I'm not all that familiar with their individual songs so I can't comment on their set-list other than to say it sounded good.

I don't think that they brought in their own sound system, but the Mezzanine has a good system of its own.

Autechre did, however, perform in total dark. There was no stage lighting and no interior lights on in the club at all (except for behind the bars and the security's flashlights). It was strange and I think led to a lot of people not dancing.

Massonix was pretty good and I really liked what Rob Hall was spinning.

Doors were at 9 and here is the time break down:

9-11 Rob Hall
11-11:45 Massonix
11:45-12:30 Rob Hall
12:30-1:30 Autechre
1:30-2:00 Rob Hall

04-06-2008, 08:25 PM
hey fikus, I missed your post before when you said you were going to Autechre. I'm also not familiar enough with their catalogue to be able to give a set list. It was good enough though that I'm going to check out their new(ish) cd, but yea, hard to dance to (I was kind of expecting that though).

wmgaretjax
04-06-2008, 08:37 PM
Good stuff, excited for tomorrow. Their setlists bounce between songs, but also contain a lot of improvised/new material. I'm hoping that's the trend tomorrow as well.

Face to Face, DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN(best thing nobody saw hands down) Chiodos was intense, Hot Water Music, JEW sounded amazing, RXB was great too. All in all a fun weekend, there was not that many people there today. It looks liek it backfired on them stacking sunday so much cause it wasnt really packed, even when the bigger acts were on main stage.

Bands love to play here, the scene is laid-back, the pay is better and things are less expensive.

That's the rumor right now. But I have no clue if there is any validity to it. As far as I am concerned, Filter is Richard Patrick. The lineup completely changed from Short Bus to Title of Record. I do not dig the new single, but I will sure as hell see them live if they come through town. I had tickets to see them in 2003, but he had to be an asshole and go to rehab.

5/29 R.E.M. @ Hollywood Bowl (doubt I'll ever be able to afford this)
5/30 Ladytron @ Henry Fonda (maybe)
7/12 Supergrass @ Avalon (still need ticket)
7/20 Feist @ Hollywood Bowl (still need ticket)
8/24 Radiohead @ Hollywood Bowl (still need ticket)
8/25 Radiohead @ Hollywood Bowl
8/28 Radiohead @ Santa Barbara Bowl
9/17 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Spiritualized , Cat Power @ Hollywood Bowl (still need ticket)

It was on like a Monday night, one of my younger friends went and really enjoyed their show.

The Cafe is an intimate venue and one of the few that I haven't been to in the city, I was totally screwed out of seeing Morphine there years ago. I tried to make it up to myself with tickets to see them in the AZ at Celebrity Theater (rotating stage), but then Mark Sandman went and died on stage in Italy, how inconsiderate.

so I saw Explosions in the Sky tonight at The Norva. They put on a really good show. Was hoping to hear Welcome Ghosts though.

But man. The opener, Lichens, was amazing. That was some of the most captivating ambience i've ever heard. And it worked amazing live. Alot of the crowd just had blank stares on their faces, seeing as a TON of kids were there. They were just watching Lichens, thinking "what the hell is he doing..". My god it was great. I would love to see Lichens again.

I believe my next show will be in Indio, California, in about 2 weeks. I think some of you guys may be there as well.

Oh fikus, you should definitely check out a show there. It's one of the more pleasant venues in SF (most of them get better shows, but the venues themselves - or their patrons - come with minor annoyances).

I might check out Ra Ra Riot & the Little Ones there next month.

I'm too busy in preparation for the week off for Coachella, so all I've got on my schedule right now is Dengue Fever on the 18th.

Week after Coachella is looking like: 4/30 The Field; 05/03 Yo Majesty & Does It Offend You, Yeah. On 04/29, I'm from Barcelona and VHS or Beta are both playing (different venues), considering one of those if I don't catch them at Coachella.

I saw Nick Lowe and Robyn Hitchcock last night. Both played solo acoustic (except for a few songs they played together during the encore, including a cover of "Peggy Sue" to finish things up).

Robyn Hitchcock talked a bit more than Nick Lowe during his set, and would go off on pretty funny, dry, British tangents. Not surprisingly, his tunes sounded fantastic. His songs are very catchy, he has a great voice, and his lyrics are clever.

Nick Lowe churned out great song after great song after great song. He was absolutely fantastic. I am always jealous of people who can play 20 great songs in a row and make them all seem effortless.

The crowd was pretty square. I hope that when I am middle-aged that I am not that lame. I doubt they get out much, but they have responsibilities and shit.

Also, I had my first overrocker experience in a long time (after a wonderful stretch at the beginning of this school year). This guy was ROCKING OUT to solo acoustic performances. He was playing air guitar. He would yell at inopportune times (which is basically all the time, when its just a guy on stage with a guitar). He held up a peace sign during "What's So Funny About (Peace Love Understanding)?". He would yell things to Nick Lowe and Robyn Hitchcock. It was bizarre. But also fantastic.

Anyway, great show. People who don't listen to Nick Lowe and Robyn Hitchcock should. That is all.

I'm jealous you got to see that show, Andrew. There are just too many great shows in the next few months, and something had to go. Did Hitchcock mainly play his newer stuff, or did he dip into his back catalog and play things he did with the Egyptians and the Soft Boys?

04-12-2008, 12:16 PM
I am actually just beginning my Soft Boys education, so I am not familiar (at least knowingly) with their work.

The only Egyptians album that I have is Fegmania!, and he played "Heaven" from that record to open the show.

Sorry I can't be any more help than that. Needless to say, all his tunes were fantastic.

Odd. I know the Norva doesnt sell out very often, but security were turning people away an hour before the show started, telling them sold out. There were alot of kids there - a few girls standing to my right who must have been about 15-16 years old and wouldnt shut up whenever the music got quieter. It was so annoying. My god.

Meat Beat Manifesto last nite was nearly perfect... they played almost 2 hours and I was spazzing out the entire time. Great crowd. It was nice meeting other MBM superfans who have been following around Jack Dangers and company for 2 decades. Even the super drunk people were holding MBM in high reverence and weren't obnoxious.
They played a ton of stuff off of their new album Auto-Immune, including my fave Return to Bass. I was hoping to hear Solid Waste, Psyche Out, and Now!, but we did get God O.D., Tino's Drum Lessons, Helter Skelter, Radio Babylon, and Edge of No Control pt 2.
If I was a younger more foolish man I'd be driving down to San Diego to catch them again tonite...

So I went to The Avett Brothers show last night. Wow. It was actually amazing. So incredibly good. I missed these guys at Coachella last year, and have regretted it ever since. I caught a partial set of their at Bumbershoot, and loved every minute of it. So I will really looking forward to the show tonight, and was not let down.
The opening act, Jessica Lea Mayfield was really, really good. She was an 18 year old singer/songwriter from Ohio, and she was the perfect opening act. And for 2 of her last songs, the Avett Brothers came out and played with her. Look for her ddebut album coming out later this year. I am sure a lot of you will enjoy it.
Then came on the Avett Brothers. And like I said, I was amazed. Blown away even. I don't remember the setlist, but they played pretty much every song I wanted them to play, and they sounded excellent. Die Die Die and Pretty Girl from Chile were my favorite songs of the night. They rocked them so hard! I didn't think they were going to play Pretty Girl From Chili, considering at the end of the song, everything goes electric, but sure enough, the stand-up bassist picked up an electric bass and the banjo player picked up an electric guitar and they rocked it hard! Oh, and The Weight of lies... the stand-up bass with a bow give me shivers. And there was a song that I don't know the name of which the lead singer, Scott, sang solo. It had my girlfriend in tears. So naturally, I made fun of her and she punched me. But seriously, it was a beautiful song. Also, the crowd was SO into it last night. Like, the crowd loved it. And the end of the set before the encore they left off with everyone singing "La la la la lala la la." And it was almost 5 miniutes before the band came back on stage, and everyone kept on singing the whole time until the band came back on stage. It was so excellent. Then they played "I Will Return" and the whole crowd sang and danced along. After that, they left the stage and the house music came back on. However, the crowd would not shut up. And everyone kept on cheering, claping, stomping and begging for one more song. The roadies were confused and werent sure whether or not to take down the stuff. Almost 10 minutes later... the band came back out. About 3/4 of the people had already left, but us who stayed behind were treated to an extra completely unplanned encore.
All in all, it was an incredible night. If the Avett Brothers are coming anywhere near ANY of you, I seriously suggest you go see them. You will not be disapointed.

I regret missing them at Coachella even more now. They were soooo good last night. Why aren't they a Coachella repeat this year? They are a band that I really want to see again. They look so genuine and humble together. They seemed seriously shocked we cheered them back on for another encore.
You seem like you are a big fan of them, when did they add a chello player to the band? With the exception of about 5 or 6 song, he played with them on every song. He hasn't been on any of the youtube videos I've seen, and even though I only saw about 1/4 of their Bumbershoot show, he wasn't playing with them for any of the song. With that being said, he added a lot to the music and he was entertaning to watch. I was just wondering when he joined the band.

Hmmmm... I know he was there at the El Rey back in August. I was gonna say he was with them at Coachella too but every video on youtube proves me wrong so I evidently remember incorrectly. I'm sure I've said this on the board before but yeah, they were the ONE band last year who I knew nothing about going in... didn't even know their name, and they made my jaw drop. Kind of like falling into K-OS's set in '05. Where you are just so over the top surprised that you almost missed something that good. And you are desperately asking around trying to find someone who knows who the hell that band was that just played. Yeah, they should have been back this year.

So I always encourage people to make their way out to spaceland on Mondays for whatever residency is in effect. I really did not know much about the man doing the residency this month, a man by the name Jonathan Rice. I did take the time out to check his website and found out he was a country style artist on a major label who is from the greater LA area. As you know I support my local bands so I guess I had to go.

I got over to Spaceland right at 11 (but of course he wouldnt be on til 11:30 because its Spaceland and they dont ever run on time, ever).

I will say I really wasn't too into the set as it was very something that should be opening for the Black Crows. The second guitarist did make some cool guitar sounds as well as play a mean slide on the guitar.

Most of the songs were about California in one way or another. A song about Cold Water Cannyon (seriously) songs about how far the middle of the road is, and another song about how cold it is in California.

I effing live here, you don't need to sing to me about what its like to be in Cali.

I was about to leave right at the middle of the set (because I saw it was a 10 song setlist), but he said he was going to dismiss his band and play some songs solo.

Alright what is he going to sound like by himself?

Well basically the same except with less cool tones and alot more basic aproach.

Lucky for me I noticed who was standing to the side of the stage. A girl he would introduce right after his 6th song. A girl he would bring onto the stage to sing End of Affair (which is on the new album). A girl from my favorite childhood movie The Wizard, oh and that girl that sings for Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis.

Even with her lovelyness onstage I still wasn't feeling this stuff. It reminded me even more of why I don't like the new RK album and how this was most likely affiliated with it in some way. Maybe her boyfriends band influenced hers. maybe vice versa, but the acoustic country duet was not working.

So heck lets bring the band back on stage. Well that worked a little better but again with Jenny singing (her vocals were way louder than his) It was like a B-side from Under the Black Light, one that you could see why it wouldn't have made the album. But it totally made the Jonathan Rice album heh.

It was a cover of The Breeze, also the final song, which was the highlight of the evening for me (minus staring at Jenny Lewis). Its funny when you cover a country song, as a band trying to cound country and it not sounding country. I hope this makes some sense.

Even though it wasn't really for me I encourage everyone to go out next week and check out the set, plus Jenny Lewis should be there and you can go say Hi to her and have her autograph your VHS box from The Wizard!

Robin Williams was AWESOME tonight at Bimbos in SF. He made fun of literally everyone possible. We had good seats, the best kind actually, the ones where you didn't have to get to the venue hell-of early to acquire, but were still head and shoulders above the rest.

Madonna's return to live shows will be beamed around America on the internet. The pop superstar has confirmed she'll play a one-off show at New York's Roseland Ballroom on April 30, and the gig will be broadcast live to U.S. viewers on Msn.com. The concert will be re-broadcast on May 15 for the rest of the world. Tickets for the show will not be pre-sold; customers of U.S. communications giant Verizon will be able to compete for many of the tickets and other potentially lucky fans will need to line up outside the Roseland to receive tickets on a first come basis. The concert will mark the first time Madonna has performed songs from her hotly anticipated new album Hard Candy, which is released on April 29.

--------

Lolz, any madonna fans who live in NY who got Verizon, try to get on that.

Or wait outside Roseland NOW :D

Saw Scout Niblett last night. I didn't realize what a terrific guitarist she is, and it was sort of amazing to hear her rock so hard considering it's just her and a drummer. Set list (of what I recognized and not in order):

Do You Want to Be Buried With My People?
Kiss (which she killed on, so beautiful)
Let Thine Heart Be Warned
Your Last Chariot
Nevada
Yummy
Dinosaur Egg
Hide and Seek
Pom Pom
No Scrubs (that's right, a TLC cover)

I would've liked to talk to her afterwards but she seems painfully shy, hardly made any banter between songs and made a beeline for the door immediately after putting down her guitar. I've been watching "The Sopranos" lately and in one episode from season 3, Tony visits Meadow at her dorm and she's got a Scout Niblett poster on the wall. I dig little coincidences like that (the fact that I saw that episode just a few days before seeing Ms. Niblett).

CHRIS CORNELL POSTPONES EUROPEAN TOUR UNTIL FALL 2008

THIRD SOLO ALBUM PRODUCED BY TIMBALAND DUE OUT IN SEPTEMBER ON INTERSCOPE RECORDS

Chris Cornell has postponed his upcoming European Tour, originally slated to begin in Holland on May 31st, until the Fall. The acclaimed, multi-platinum former lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave is holed up in the studio with super producer Timbaland, continuing work on his third solo CD, tentatively slated for a September 2008 release on Interscope Records.

“Due to an extended recording schedule, I will be able to perform in front of my European fans a few months later than expected. With that said, I plan on touring extensively through Europe and the rest of the world through 2008-2009,” said Cornell.
