Super Furry Animals for me tonight, supported by Jim Noir. Should be good fun.

SFA are so fun live.

Also, checking the time, this is probably going on now. So instead of wishing you a good time I'll request a review.

Tessa, that's awesome! I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to go to the show since I have to work until 6 and that's when they pass out wristbands, but I got on the guest list. It's not 100% yet, but, since I've been working on so many projects on campus, they might be giving me a backstage, all access deal too. That'd be killer.

Do you know what the three songs they played were last night? I saw over at the SR board that you said they played the same 3 songs for both performances. That sucks.

sigur ros 3 song set kicked ass last night.
(altho some miserable douchebags were sitting behind me criticizing people taking pictures. why do you feel the need to voice your condescending opinions out loud? are you that unhappy that the only way to feel any fulfillment in your life is to be a patronizing asshole about the dumbest shit ever? who gives a fuck if people take pictures of their favorite band? idiots.)

I doubt it now, since my friend is turning 21 and I probably will be out with him rather than going to that. I'm disappointed; I wanted to do Sigur Ros, skip the Q&A and make it to the 10:30 show.

So just got back from Neil Young at Nokia tonight. He was pretty good (except for that horrid like...20 minute guitar solo). The best part of the night, hands down, was the full on BRAWL that took place in my section during his acoustic set. I'm talking 20 people spanning 5 rows of people punching the shit out of each other while 3 security guards tried to drag them off. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen at a concert, and I never dreamed something like that would happen at the Nokia, especially during Neil fucking Young.

Sigur was great again tonight at the Arclite. They played the same 3 songs as yesterday, but tonight was different in that it had a Q&A. Basically, the most important non-film information that came from the Q&A:

- No tour is imminent. When the new record is ready, then they will tour the US
- No completion date for the album. It will be done when it's done (their words)

the Q&A session tonight was horrible. few people actually asked anything related to the movie. the band especially kjarri kinda made it worse by answering curtly and seemed disinterested. we'll see if people ask better questions tomorrow

Any reasons why this even happend? and thats insane.

Alright back from night 2 of my Thrice/ Brand New block of shows, good times, its nice seeing this at the Wiltern, no insane pushing but still surrounded by Jesse Lacey freak fans.

Tessa, they are not playing anythign off Your Favorite Weapon, so dont get your hopes up on hearing stuff from that album. They are pretty much play the entire new album then all Deja material to fill the rest. Hopefully I see ya, doors are at 6pm, show starts at 7, Brand New is on at 9:15 or so and played til liek 10:40, Thrice came on at 7:45 and did 45 - 50 mins.

tessalasset
11-03-2007, 11:15 PM
Great thank you for the times. I'll see if my sister wants to see Thrice at all. If not, we'll prob show up around 8:30. It's ok that they're not playing any of the old old stuff. I would just kill to hear Soco Amaretto, that's all. But I love all their songs so it's ok whatever they play. Look for me tomorrow.

The fight took place cause there was a really loud drunk couple ruining the show for our entire section, and it took security a good 20 minutes to do anything about it. As they were being escorted out, demanding a refund, a woman in front of them said something like "it's about fucking time!" and the drunk woman jumped on her and ripped her hair and then the boyfriends got into it and then people were just jumping into it from all over. It was insane.

Speaking of insane, Sigur Ros again tonight. Played the same three songs, the movie was great again (Untitled 8 again blew me away), but the Q&A was fantastically hilarious. The moderator was kind of retarded (introducing Georg as the bass player and saying bass like ass) and they were totally making fun of her questions. They definitely gave the one-word answers tongiht, but it wasn't tense at all. The audience was cracking up and applauding and pretty much eating out of their hands. Some boy came up to the mic all totally serious and thoughtful and was like "I love every single one of your albums so much. They mean so much to me. So I was just wondering... what is your favorite work that you've made as a band, personally?" and Georg takes the mic and goes "Actually I hate them all." and Orri takes the mic and goes "Yeah, they sound like shit to me." Then Jonsi takes the mic and all quietly goes "....I like them. I think they're good." Everyone was ROFLing. And then someone asked if they listen to any American music and if so, what are some of their favorite American bands. Kjarri took the mic and is all casual and goes "oh, you know... Creed. Linkin Park, you know? And my personal favorite is R. Kelly. Especially Trapped in the Closet. That's the best." I never thought I'd hear Sigur Ros talking about Trapped in the Closet. And then some other chick comes up and goes "So... if Georg plays the "bass" then who in the band plays the trout?" Everyone roared with laughter. And Georg goes "Actually I prefer the Halibut." The moderator girl just sat there laughing but not really understanding what was going on. It was so funny but so sad for her.

But yeah, that was a great fucking Q&A. They really seemed to be enjoying it.

I liked the show but we couldn't see for most of it. We happened to be standing behind like the tallest people in the venue so that kinda bummed me out. If I was by myself I would have just walked around til I found a cool place but I was with my little sister and it was her first time at the Wiltern and first time seeing Brand New so I didn't want to make her keep moving around. I liked the set alright. This definitely wasn't the best BN show I've been to. (HoB and Glasshouse were both better). I loved Crack the Sky and Limousine altho way to put a downer on the song, talking about the girl who got her head chopped off. What the fuck, man. I dunno. The whole night was kind of a blur to me. My sis loved it tho so I'm happy. If I had a better place to watch it I probably would have liked it more. Chris bummer valet pulled up right as you walked over. Would have liked to talk more. Next time.

Yeah for sure, next time. Oh and Sic Transit Gloria, you lucked out, they havent been playing it that often on the tour so far. Their second show at Avalon back in April was insane, thus making these(so far) pretty sub par. I have one Jesse photo(I call it my middle finger to his no camera policy) and a few Thrice ones of course. What are the odds valet comes right when I say hi ya know? I'll see ya the 15th at The el Rey for Thursday though.

Panther is cool. I'm a fan of Glass Candy's stuff, so I could see myself enjoying it. I liked AIH when I saw them at UCLA, but it was free so that made me more accepting than if I had paid for it. The show didn't stick with me at all, so I can't say much about it now.

So I want to schedule some shows - something I kinda have to do since now with infant... so which ones do I/should I go to? There are a few date conflicts. I'll prolly do two or three of the shows listed below, it's not about the money, those $5 dollar shows rock though (this is in Columbus Ohio by the way)

Thanks for the suggestions!

11-15, ELECTRIC SIX with 1990s and WE ARE THE FURY, $5
11-15, MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND, $5
11-18, THE CULT with THE CLIKS and ACTION ACTION, $30
11-18, FEIST, $25
11-18, BEN LEE with THE CARY BROTHERS, $10
11-26, TEGAN AND SARA with NORHTERN STATE, $20
11-30, JOSE GONZALEZ, $15
12-3, SPOON, $5

My Brightest Diamond is OK live, but I wouldn't check them out on their own.

Feist is pretty solid live, but more of a person to catch at a festival where it is economical.

Yeah i knew you were taking photos Supre i saw you, you were right in the front trying to cover your camera. That show was pretty nice, the brand new encore was probably the highlight of the night. Supre does he always tell the story of the mom picking up her daughters head in the middle of the road?

Aaah nice, somebody actually saw me. Yeah my friend was trying to cover for me too, and no he does not always tell that story. He did just say this about it tonight '' this song is about a girl who is dead'' and then started the song.

Dos is rather strange live. Mike Watt and the bass player from Black Flag (female one, Kira I think) doing dual bass attacks. It's cool for awhile, but sometimes really atonal, in a bad way. Course I saw their second show ever, so maybe they've gotten better.

if BN was better on monday, I don't even wanna know how horrible they were on the other nights. My buddy and I would have walked out if we hadn't been in that roped off section in front of the soundboard... at least there we could chill comfortably. Brand New kicks ass when the entire band is playing... but Jesse and his guitar puts me to sleep and unfortunately that was half the show.
on a brighter note, Thrice was amazing!

He did 2 songs solo acoustic. coca cola getting dropped in their because the guitar wasnt workign to do Limosuine was a nice touch. It wasnt about them being 'horrible'' it was more if their set wasnt so centered on The Devial and God record, which on Monday wasnt. Friday in San jose was very ''boring'' so to say, Saturday I liked a bit more because they actually started with Welcome to Bangkok, Sunday had a good feel to it and having Degausser as the set closer and Sic Transit gloria dropped in the set was nice. But yesterday wins for them though starting with Tatou. Anyway, Thrice rules all though and 4 more shows with them is a nice thing. Soma tomorrow and Thursday shoudl be awesome for sure cause its a venue where the show shoudl be the way its supposed to be, insane.

So I just got back from Hanson at Avalon. I was surprised it didn't sell out, since they always sell out venues that size. But they did just play five shows here a couple months ago, so maybe some of the LA fans are hansoned out. Such a great show. I was able to sit on the bleachers up top and had no one in my way. The guys are such a tight band. And holy shit they pulled out some oldies. "Yearbook" which was on Middle of Nowhere, and they just started playing it live for the first time this tour. It's not a great song but jesus christ, nostalgia. I used to make fun of that song 10 years ago and I still make fun of it now.

Set list:

Great Divide
Minute Without You
Been There Before
Can't Stop
Crazy Beautiful
cover song
The Walk
Strong Enough to Break
Go
MMMBop
Yearbook
You Really Got a Hold on Me
Blue Sky
If Only
Hey
Georgia
Penny and Me
Running Man
cover song
Lost Without Each Other
Something Going Round
Spain
The Truth (cover song)
Great Divide (a capella)

Damn that is a good set list. This was my 11th time seeing them, which sounds like a lot, but given that it's over 10 years, that's hardly anything. 5 of those times were in 2007. There was a guy sitting behind me - a solo guy. It's so great seeing more guys in the audience nowadays. People really are starting to respect them finally. And they're getting such good critical reviews. So we'll see what's in store for them. Maybe once people get over themselves (or once Hanson changes their name) they'll be up for a Coachella slot. Don't shoot me. It could happen.

Ok, I wont, I dont even know her so mums the word. They started with Tautou last night which led to The Quiet Things and all the kids went apes**t(finally) in the pit. Then Jesses guitar didnt behave for Limosuine so he played Coca Cola on acoustic for the time being while it got fixed. 3rd night's a charm for them to play a lot more different stuff.

I hope they play it again this week though, I do love that song as an intro to their set.

Off to San Diego in a few hours.

That Hanson setlist is crazy, glad you had fun. They can be the required ''cheesy pop band'' ala Fountains of Wayne one of these years, which isnt a bad thing. I think Third Eye Blind will be next years, so Hanson is due.

Third Eye Blind and Eve 6 was the first real concert I ever went to besides John Fogerty. I'm sure I've told this story on here before, but anyways, my friend got us backstage passes, and at one point Stephen Jenkins was just chilling by himself in a hallway. We went up to him and said "are you the lead singer?" He got all sly and said "no...um...I'm the electrician." and I said "you are?!?! awesome! can we get a picture with you?" and he laughed and posed with us. And then I met Bob Saget and that's pretty much all I have to end with.

And I agree about Taylor being cheesy. I laughed at him a lot last night cause it's kind of ridiculous. But I do take solace in knowing it's all an act. When they played at Hotel Cafe this summer they were the chillest musicians ever. It was a "friends and family" show so they had nothing to prove.

I went to Architecture.

Panther was really fun. Disco style, with a live drummer. He had some cool loops and his vox weren't half bad, but the last song, when he brought out a female singer and he played keys, was awesome. Really, really intense, no wave style dance music. It floored me.
Glass Candy were killer. They played for nearly an hour and completely tore the place down. When they started the crowd was pretty still, but by the end they had everyone dancing like whoa. They played Computer Love, and that was a great song to hear live. They had lots of energy and Ida was really cute. It was cool that they played what amounted, for me at least, to a headlining set, as the crowd was really digging them.
I stayed for the first six Architecture songs, but they didn't really grab me (they never have) so I got In'N'Out instead.

Aah, you missed Art Brut and The Hold Steady? That was a really really concert, I even got to the front, which doesn't happen much with me. The opener was kind of strange (he talked of how they write the setlist on the drummer's bare chest, and had us form a campfire circle around him at different points during the show), but I'll give them points for trying to engage the audience and create a communal environment. The songs weren't that memorable though.

Art Brut killed it. This is one of my favorite bands, and they were a lot of fun live. At one point Eddie ran around/hopped through the audience, which, unlike the opener The Blood Arm, was totally awesome instead of being slightly awkward. Eddie Argos, of course, was also witty in that inimitable British way, the setlist was a pretty good mix between old and new songs, although I would have liked to have seen These Animal Menswe@r.

As for The Hold Steady: holy shit, I never realized they were that big. This audience went insane for the band. I felt like kind of a poseur being up there feet away, since I only really started listening to the band once I got tickets for this show (it is really good music though). Hearing tons of people shouting in perfect synchronicity to the wordy, arrhythmic parts of all the songs was kind of mindblowing. These people really adore that band. They did put on a great show though, and it was pretty wonderful, shouting along to those anthemic, power chord loving choruses. It's pretty clear that Craig Finn loves doing what he does and was moved and delighted by the intense dedication of the crowd, and his pure joy only made the show more exciting.

The way I figured, I've seen the Hold Steady 4 times (twice on the tour for Girls and Boys) and I've seen Art Brut twice, but I'd never seen Glass Candy before.

Glad the Hold Steady were great. The best time I saw them was when they were touring for Separation Sunday and there were only about 40 people at the venue. They tore it up so hard, and afterwards Craig gave me a free poster and a few beers. That was so much fun.

I was at the hold steady tonight also. Got there right when art brut started. Very fun shit. I did notice how many people were singing every lyric but Craig said there was a bunch of people from minny there to see them so I'm guessing that had to do with most of the hardcore fans. Saw Kenna & She Wants Revenge Tuesday night. Kenna sounded good but there was hardly anybody there. My friends made us arrive late but all the songs I heard were the good ones from his album. I could've done without his dancing, as it got a bit tired after a while, but overall it was fun. I hadn't seen She Wants Revenge in their previous 3 trips to Tucson so I thought it was time to remedy that. Wow, I can't understand how anybody could have chosen to see any portion of their set instead of Daft Punk's at Coachella. I mean, they're not horrible, but they played for an hour and 15 minutes and it felt like twice as long. If it had been a 30 minute set, I'd have walked away satisfied. Too many of their songs really do sound too much alike. I'm glad I can say I saw them at least but I have no pressing need to ever do so again.

Last night was a much better show, Of Montreal. I'd heard they were lackluster in their last Tucson show at the beginning of the year, and while some were critical of the sound issues they had at Coachella, I enjoyed their performance. The show they put on last night blew away the previous two shows I'd seen. They were loud and the stage set-up was great, particularly for a Tucson show. It doesn't hurt that the bulk of the songs they played were from Hissing Fauna, which just so happens to be one of the 5 best albums of the year. They played a couple of new tracks so that's going to be a CD to look forward to next year. The only disappointment was that they again didn't play "The Past is a Grotesque Animal." I understood why they didn't include it in their Coachella set -- it's 14 minutes long and a downer -- but it would have been good as their set closer or the first song of their encore. Oh yeah, and their videos were a nice treat, adding to the experience. Would've been even better had I been tripping.

I'm counting on The Past is a Grotesque Animal tonight. I've seen them do it twice and it's been a killer both times. Or maybe Kevin Barnes' cover of Green Typewriters. That'd make me cry in my beer with joy.

That's great news. The DVD, I mean. Not the fact that they didn't play "The Past is a Grotesque Animal." I was thinking yesterday that it'd be great to have a live CD of their set.

Joanna Newsom put on a good show, although because of really bad traffic I missed all but the last two of the orchestra accompanied songs (I would have heard 2 and a half of them but they wouldn't let me into the theater until she finished a song). Really liked the new song she played, and thought it was cool that we got to hear Joanna with the Philharmonic, Joanna with the Ys Street Band, and Joanna solo (with the harp?). Plus, I'm pretty sure I saw Andy Samberg as I was walking out. At least it looked like him.

First off, let me say that I'm obsessed with Joanna. Fave album of last year.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall was almost completely full, including the seats that ring the top of the venue, which make the place look like a tribunal. I was dead center, seven rows from the front, and, since the venue had an orchestra pit for the first six rows, directly in line with Joanna. The orchestra was all on stage, they dimmed the lights and she came out with her band. They opened up Emily, and the strings busted into the Van Dyke Parks (Who was sitting a few seats in front of me) arrangement. I teared up. This was to be a common occurrence throughout the night. The orchestra at some points overpowered her harp playing, which was unfortunate. Ryan Francesconi, who plays Tambura and Banjo, added great lines the whole night, and sounded great. They played all the way thru Ys with the original arrangements. Having been to the show last year where she reorganized the songs for a smaller group, it was cool to see these. It was also obvious that she had moved past these arrangement, as at times it seemed like she was singing against the orchestra, trying to push them, and they didn't want to follow. Monkey and Bear was awesome, Sawdust and Diamonds was transcendent, and Only Skin sounded great. Cosmia, for some reason, gets so much stronger live. That song sounded so amazing. After they played thru Ys, they left for a 20 minute intermission. When they came back, it was Joanna, Ryan, Nick the drummer and the female vocal/violin player. Joanna started playing Bridges and Balloons on her own, and, about a minute in, the band started to accompany her. It was soooo fucking good. At the El Rey show they only played with her on the Ys tracks, so it was great to hear them change up these older songs. The Book of Right On particularly benefitted from this. They also did Colleen, which was cool as I hadn't heard it before. When she does her ecstatic yelp, I wanted to give her a hug. Cutest thing ever. The band left after Clam, Crab, Cockel, Cowrie and she played the new song, which was really cool and didn't seem nearly as long as it was. She came back out for an encore and played Sadie.

For me, this was the best show I went to this year. Nothing else is comparable. I love her music so much, and she's such an amazing performer. See her if you ever have the chance. You will not be sorry.

I was in Chicago last Thursday for work and caught Battles, Caribou, Born Ruffians and White Williams at The Metro. The show was unique in that the Battles/White Williams tour and the Caribou/Born Ruffians tours just happened to be coming through Chicago at the same time and they just doubled up the bill. It was sold out. Lots of hipsters.

Unfortunately, we missed White Williams since the friend who had tickets at will call was late getting there from work, so we sat at whatever bar that is next to The Metro for a few beers till he showed up. We walked into The Metro right as Born Ruffians started. A very young trio, I thought they were great. Sharp, punchy pop songs that rip off the weirder parts of Pixies. In fact the singer's yelp was a little TOO similar to Frank Black's sometimes, but I really liked them. The drummer was great, pounding aggressive rhythms over these pop songs, starting the theme of the night: incredible and conspicuous drumming.

Caribou was next. I guess I didn't realize how shoegazey they were until I saw them live. They were good, but really just didn't do it for me. They played way too long and I was boraed of them after about the 4th song. I think my biggest problem with them was the singing. If they never sang or opened their mouths, I would have liked the set a lot more... Instrumentally they were great, even if the most musically interesting moments were created by the laptop computer that overlayed their whole set with beats, noises and samples. I definitely preferred the more electronically-influenced songs. Overall, as I was watchign their set, I felt like it should have been compelling. But it wasn't, it was just boring. I should have taken more percoset before the show, I guess.

Battles were up next, and holy jesus, they were great live. So Radiohead opened up their new album with a song in five; la-di-freaking-da. The rhythms and counter-rhythms and odd times signatures all collided with each other in oddly perfect unison. Every review I've read of Battles refers to them as mathy or otherwise references their supposed mathiness. Kids, this is just jazz in a new outfit, and it looks and feels so good. I had listened to a grand total of about two Battles songs before this show, but that didn't make a damn bit of difference, as I was engaged, entertained and amazed by every second of their set.

Pitchfork has pictures of the show HERE (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/47009-photos-battles-caribou-white-williams-chicago-il-110807-), which is good, since I forgot to bring my camera.

They played these songs in no particular order:

say it to me now
falling slowly
when your mind's made up
once
if you want me
this low
sleeping?
im pretty sure they played drown out
lay me down
star star
a new swell season song where glen plays what i think is a mandolin
some irish song that glen was going on and on about
FOGTOWN!!!
some bob dylan song they covered for the movie's soundtrack

i think that's it. it was an awesome set list. tons of celebrities too. I walked by Jenna Fisher (aka Pam from the Office) in the bathroom. she was with some guy who was definitely not her ex-husband (i guess it doesnt matter anymore) but they just looked like friends. she met up with david denholm aka ROY from the office of all people, matthew perry (biggest glen fan ever), meg ryan, kevin pollack, liz phair... and i think those are the only celebs i saw. they were all together, which was weird. and after the show they all stuck around in that little VIP area while the whole crowd filed out staring at them.

but yeah, fantastic show. i only caught one martha wainwright song and her voice is incredible. i might have to check that out more.

I've seen the Frames 5 times. It's obviously not as hard, but last night Colm and Joe came out on violin and bass, and some dude played viola as well. So they got somewhat electric in it. Brad, more ween info?

ween is awesome. the drummer, claude? broke his splash cymbal on the 5th song, so it flew off the stand during every single song. it was a busy night for the roadies.

they opened with an acoustic set because "hey it's raining right now"

the set list was something like this:

Birthday Boy (acoustic)
Chocolate Town (acoustic)
Mutilated Lips (acoustic)
Tried and True (acoustic)
I Don't Want It (acoustic into the electric rock out ending)
Golden Eel
Spinal Meningitis
Baby Bitch
Piss Up a Rope
Learnin' to Love
Light Me Up
Voodoo Lady (with a really long intro)
Spirit Walker
Take Me Away (Gene has to light a up a cigarette to hold to sing this song)
Waving My Dick in the Wind
Mister Richard Smoker
Transdermal Celebration
Object
Buckingham Green
Bananas and Blow
Party
Pushin' Up Daisies
With My Own Bare Hands
The Mollusk
Johnny on the Spot
Goin Gets Tough
Slow Down Boy
Pandy Fackler (with a ridiculously long keyboard solo)
Ocean Man
Shamemaker->
Fiesta

Encore:
I Got to Put the Hammer Down
Touch My Tooter
Reggaejunkiejew (with a really long Deaner guitar solo)
Dr Rock (which Deaner chose by screaming "DR ROCK" at everyone until they played it)

The guy next to me was keeping track and counted 36 songs, so I'm missing one. I found a photo of me watching Ween on flickr, but it's too small and blurry to post.

I was particularly pleased because they played every single song that I was dying to finally hear them play (Mutilated Lips, Tried and True, Piss Up a Rope), a bunch of the newer ones that sounded fantastic live (Object, Put the Hammer Down, Party, With My Own Bare Hands, etc..). Deaner was fairly talkative for once, and he kept making funny comments like "I love the direction that you guys have started to take the Tenderloin toward," I somehow managed to walk right up to the front of the stage and turned around as a crowd quickly gathered behind me, so my timing was impeccable per chance. No openers. Ween usually has no openers since they play for 3 hours themselves. During Mister Richard Smoker the security guard kept laughing and told me something like "This is the weirdest band I've worked a show for yet. Who are they? Ween-something?"

That's about it.

The sound for something like this at The Wiltern should be solid....

The Bowl sound was awesome when they were there.

Mute Math is opening on that Alanis Matchbox tour, what a waste. Now thats a tough decision if I lived in the bay and was looking for a New Years Eve show. Cake or Mars Volta? Glad I dont have to pick.

i'd go see cake again, but the hotels would be too much, and driving out there on new years eve would be a death wish

suprefan
11-13-2007, 08:16 PM
done it before, but since Justice on New Years Eve is a DJ set, I need to make new plans, SF seems like a good one to look at, and hotels are not that bad, you do not have to stay in the city ya know. I stayed around SF airport for NYE 2005 - 2006 and it wasnt that bad, like $90 a night and it was nice.
