Wayne talked about how he felt that Elliott was waiting for someone or something to rescue him, and how sometimes you have to do the hard work of reckoning with your place in life and how to improve it yourself.

Wayne said something along the lines of how Smith was always waiting on something to bring him to ultimate happiness, how he never experienced it for very long, and how you have to just go out and get it. How you have to give love in order to receive love. Something like that.

So he talked about how Elliott was waiting for someone to bring him ultimate happiness and sometimes you have to do the hard work of loving yourself for not very long with reckoning in order to improve your ability to go out and get some, to get rescued and receive improvement?

The Flaming Lips were AMAZING last night. The best compliment I can really give them is that I had listened to "The Soft Bulletin" many times before this gig and 1) never really understood a lot of themes in there and 2) Just did not get what all the hype about that album was all about. I feel COMPLETELY different now after seeing these songs live with many of Wayne's personal stories weaved in there. Totally blown away.

On a side note, I had never been to the cemetary before and it took me well over 30min ti find my car after the show since it was so dark....that wasn't fun.

Also, Matt you should seriously consider becoming some sort of music critic/reviewer....you writing is seriously amazingly good. Fun hanging out with you and Chris as always.

I agree that The Flaming Lips show last night was one of the best shows I've seen ever... a good friend of mine just committed suicide last week and hearing Waiting for a Superman and Feeling Yourself Disintegrate live is exactly what I needed to hear to cope... Wow!

Seriously. Marnie Stern was fantastic as well, get there early for her tomorrow.

This; was Zack Hill drumming last night? I know he's going to be at Low End tonight for Death Grips, but I can't say I know what he looks like!

--Steven Drozd's extended guitar solo on Feeling Yourself Disintegrate (one of my top ten favorite songs EVER and a moment that literally had me in tears of joy)

and THIS. I'm totally with you on the tears of joy thing; I never really gave this song much attention when listening to the album, but there was something about Wayne's talk, the build of the song itself, and the solo which made everything click. One of my Top 10 concert moments, easily.

Awesome line up they have this year! I'll be at Brandt Brauer Frick + Cocorosie for sure. I was at the Luckman earlier this year and I have to say that the sound wasn't that loud inside so I'm a little concerned on that front.

It was a Jazz performance (madeleine peyroux) and I was sitting up in the mezzanine level (front row). Her music is calm so perhaps (and hopefully) it was just that show. It's about the size of the Orpheum theatre with a slightly smaller balcony level.

And that is awesome you were one of the girls! It was so funny seeing so many of you in the same costume. Must have been a great timeThe kid with the light-saber up there with you did not look happy at all though. Maybe he was too cool for it with his ninja headband.

Hahahaha yeah I think his dad worked there or something because his dad was in front of the stage videotaping him THE ENTIRE TIME. I also was able witness some guy in the front row full on bawling for Feeling Yourself Disintegrate so that was pretty cool.

WHOA! And fwiw I always thought you were a dude. ;)

The Luckman's capacity is only 1,152. Orpheum I believe is around 2,000. I was at the Mad Pey show and yes it was a bit quiet but that is bc of her style. I was also at Matisyahu and Yann Tiersen. That was LOUD.. but in a very good way. The sound quality, I think, is excellent. Great place for a show.

PLUS I found out that if you order your ticket through their box office 323.343.6600 they only charge you a $3 fee on the WHOLE purchase. Way better than ordering via ticketmaster online.

The Flips were excellent again tonight. The show was a lot lighter and happier than last night for obvious reasons. The Dark Side stuff was great, and Wayne sang little Wizard of Oz ditties in between Dark Side songs (We're Off to See the Wizard, If I Only Had a Brain, etc.). They passed out trippy glasses for people to wear, which really enhanced some of the visuals.

Since Dark Side is shorter than The Soft Bulletin, they played the same three encore songs as last night plus two extra songs - what I think might be a new song (and was really fantastic) and Yoshimi.

An amazing, extremely memorable last few nights.

how hard is it to edit your own blog and say the winner is blah blah blah? Or just do a quick grouping of all the entries and do a reply all email blast, you could even put a direct link to you next contest in the blast. Just a thought.

I just did this today after we finally drew a winner for Rage Against The Machine (It took a LONG time to qualify all the entries) and did an e-mail blast. What a waste of time! Lots of whiny babies and angry responses. Remind me to never do this again for any contest. If you won, we'll let you know. If you didn't hear anything, you didn't win. Unless you're Guedita or CutterButter, don't wait for your hand written response in the mail or carrier pigeon. Ok, thanks, bai!

from Jason Hill's Facebook(I don't even know who this guy is, but it's a pretty cool Supergroup he has going on):

Hi All,

I’ll be playing my new material for the first time on July 15 in Silverlake, CA at Satellite (formally Spaceland). I’ve been working on an album for two years with some friends of mine and we are almost done. The band playing on July 15 is Alex Carapetis(Nine Inch Nails), Dominic Howard(from Muse), Mark Stoermer (from Killers), Ray Suen (Flaming Lips), Sam Gendel on Sax and myself. The show will probably sell quick so I wanted to tell all my friends first before it goes public. Hope you can make the fun. Stay tuned for bits of music to be released coming soon. The album is the best thing I’ve ever done. The band will be playing on July 15 under the name EXPENSIVE LOVE. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.thesatellitela.com/.

$20? Gang Gang Dance is worth that alone.

Except for Lindstrom; GGD and he are totally worth $20.

Yeah, but for short sets with mobs of people? There'd have to be another 2 solid names to get me there.

What venues are they using this year?

Isnt the El Rey ''too big'' for them?

Is the lineup shit or are they just bands you don't know? i don't recognize most of the bands.

Last year I discovered a ton of bands I didn't know and ended up liking a lot! The fest was incredibly well-organized and well-run, we saw a ton of bands, got free booze, and got to eat from a bunch of awesome food trucks. Headliners got full sets as well.

Oh yeah! I forgot this was the same thing. Your stories about it at Mogwai made me really wanna go this year.

I just checked, and the Sleep show at the Wiltern this Sunday is MASSIVELY undersold...as in, plenty of floor tickets still available and practically the entire balcony as well. They really should move it to the Fonda.

Well, that's encouraging. Mayhaps I'll just try to snag a ticket day of and see if I can't save some money.

I think wristbands sold out the week of last year.

Also,

That Dog - 8/26 @ Troubadour

haven't seen that name in a while.

For Culture Collide, i'll concede that this year there is nothing like the Amusement Parks On Fire-Suuns-Besnard Lakes-Land Of Talk show that somehow got squeezed into the middle of it and became the easy highlight, but this will still be worth way more than $20. I'd expect a lot of adds, unless they're scaling down. They were adding bands until mid-festival last year.

Pretty sure he's talking about the Sleep show. And yeah, fuck. I feel bad for them. The Live Nation page had that select your ticket feature, and when I was messing around and clicked on balcony it said "629 seats match your request." And who knows how many floor tickets are still available.

I really wish i could go, but I'm just flat fucking broke at the moment. They were so good at FYF too.

Try to win tickets between now and then, last year they were literally giving away tickets for the Dirty Projectors show at the Wiltern, and this is even more undersold than that was.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
06-22-2011, 04:16 PM
I just emailed Scenestar, but yes i do recal FYF giving away dozens of tickets to that (which i ended up also not being able to go to regardless)

you could just walk into the wiltern and say that you won tickets and they handed you a stack for that dirty projectors show, it was really good

Just saw Active Child tonight at some Filter party thing on Melrose. It was in an alley way pretty much.

Afterwards, Pat said thanks to everyone who put on the event and to all of us for watching and goes to start packing up, and I had to walk up and whisper to him to mention their freaking residency at the Echo in August. Such a prime moment for promotion and he totally failed. It was funny. A few minutes later this chick who works at the Echo came up and said "Thank you SO much for reminding him! I kept hoping and hoping he'd say something and he just didn't." It was a fun little exchange.
