so, the Radio Dept "dj set" i just went to was fucking awful. i don't think a live drummer can actually help these guys. not only was there a drum machine (which was much too loud in the mix), but the bass lines and some of the guitar were also backtrack'd. i can't recall the last time i left a show only after 4-5 songs. wtf?!

i guess there's a reason why these guys haven't toured much in the 10 years or whatever they've been around. i wouldn't even think of wasting your time on these guys at Coachella.

I had to settle for ticketfast on the show tomorrow, anyone ever tried asking for extra stubs at the box office after the show?

OR anyone going to the show tomorrow with hard tickets that don't keep them?

The Foo Fighters' secret show at the Troubadour tonight was fucking awesome. I had been longing to hear "Hey, Johnny Park!" for ages, and I finally got it tonight. They played for 2hr 35mins, hell of a show. The new album wasn't anything special, there was one slow song toward the end of it called "I Should Have Known" that was really fucking great, but aside from that it was pretty much the band just going through the motions. Which is hard not to expect from a band like that at this point in their career.

Tickets were scarce for tonight's show, they only passed out 150 for a venue that holds around 450. Although it definitely seemed packed. I got there at around 2 and was about 60 people back, and from what I heard they only passed out about 30 more to people behind me and that was it. A couple hundred people got shut out.

It was awesome hanging out in line with JustSteve all day, really glad he got to see one of these shows after how much he had wanted to in the past few weeks. :)

Oh, and they played "Butterflies" live for like the 4th time ever, and the first time since '95, according to Dave. Fuck yeah.

4 city blocks!

no way that park is 4 city blocks.

and you probably saw my 2 kids running around there this afternoon, haha. loaded them in the car and drove up from newport on a whim. got my wristband thanks to the kindness of tallguy letting me join him in line and supre saying to give troub a try. then jumped in the car to take them back home before turning around and heading back to the show. traffic gods were smiling on me tonight as i made it round trip from troub to newport and back to troub in 2 hours...with the drive home occurring during rush hour, no less. walked in with about 15 minutes until foo's took the stage a 9, was a little concerned when lady i spoke with mentioned the 9pm stage time, but it all worked out. my hospital legs were def. not ready for 2 1/2 hours of rocking out, though.

quite the show tonight!

it was def. a rad day, thanks again for letting me join you in line...and especially glad my 5 year old and 2 1/2 year old behaved so well. so thankful the line up was across the street at the park, was able to keep them entertained for hours. i have the raddest kids. guess i'm doing something right, haha...

and one great thing about your size...telling people to "shut the f**k up"(well, not literally) and having them actually listen. i must've given those guys behind us about a dozen hard looks, but i guess the combo of alcohol and douchebag made that hard for them to comprehend.

can't wait to be back on daddy duty...gonna be a long day, starting in about 4 hours.

Dum Dum Girls really kicked butt at Bottom of the Hill last night to open their first headlining tour. i wonder if i'm the only one on this board that likes them?

anyway, my long wait to see them was definitely worth it...they sounded great. they really have the 2-minute lo-fi garage love song down to a science. but, this may also end up anchoring them from reaching greater heights as their songs all sorta sound the same...they need to mix things up a bit more (they also have some ballads and adding more of those into the mix would be good).

but i really just like their sound...warm, guitar riffs played through vintage gear (someone comes from money) and lovely female harmonies drenched in the right amount of reverb. good stuff. oh, and the eye candy factor is pretty massive. i have a major crush on Dee Dee. she's got a lovely voice, excellent stage mojo and is just smokin' hot. go see these guys. it will be fun, i promise.

I was just there about a month ago for a metal show and the place was sold out, they weren't doing wristbands but they had security on both isles, each side of the venue, and were only letting people in when people came out, being real strict about it too. That show was early January but I didn't attempt to go in the pit for Snoop at The Fox last weekend...

I've never been but the site says they will be doing wristbands. sounds like its going to be like Club Nokia. I just hope it doesn't end up like Ghostland when they did that at CN and people where getting violent trying to get over the rail in to the pit.

Yeah, I've always dug Kristen Gundred's, (Dee Dee), voice every since her Grand Ole Party days. And, agreed, she is really smokin' hot. I'd like to go see them sometime as well.

You guys also have to realize that Florene & The machine are just really, really, really huge right now. If you think an artist is big enough to attract that much of attention from scalpers, you should just realize that thouasands of actual fans are trying to get tickets.

Sure, it's going to be thousands of people that literally only know "Dog Days," and talk through the rest of the set, but still...

L.A. is notorious for bands getting huge amounts of airplay on KROQ and people becoming obsessed with singles and then declaring them to be their "favorite band" and never even listening to the rest of the album

So I saw Best Coast and Wavves last night. I had never really listened to Wavves though, so I was there mostly for Best Coast. I thought Best Coast were good. Bethany is really charming and energetic and her voice sounds great live... but they were not able to pull of that really full sound in their recordings. I think if they added a chick bass player who sang back up vocals, it would really fill out their sound. I will still see them at Coachella barring any major conflicts.

But Wavves... holy shit they killed it. So much fun. They opened up with a Black Flag cover and crowd went nuts. The energy didn't die down for a second either. Like I said, I have never listened to much Wavves, but I am going to now. That set was just too much of a blast.

The opener No Joy were pretty good too.

I don't think they had anything for Interpol. One of the best things to use the Gilt sites for is Jetsetter. It provides discounted hotel rooms in places all over the world. Great to look into if you have a show out of state because you can find really nice hotel rooms for relatively cheap. Example would be getting some of the themed suites at the Palms in Vegas for I think it was $300/night it was probably even cheaper then that.

they opened with that black flag cover at soma in san diego too. They're really awsome live. At soma towards the end the stage was filled with kids who jumped on and were just dancing and having a good time, the band dug it. Best Coast that night was slacking, I'm going to the show this next Thursday at the fonda though so hoping for a better performance from best coast. I know wavves will be a party again

Not all by ticketing agencies. They have a season subscription service. You buy X number of shows, get Silver, Gold, Platinum level and each year you subscribe your seats get better and better (i'm assuming cuz people stop subscribing, you move higher up the totem pole).

People that have been subscribing for years get the best seats. I have a friend that has been a subscriber for about 7 or 8 years now and he gets front of section A tix all the time, but mostly on the side (this is only the last 3 or 4 years though). He said he started out getting front of Section B/Back of Section A. Maybe in another few years he'll actually start getting some in the front/center of Section A.

I saw The Church this past Sunday doing their 3 album tour. They put on a great show. I'm just a casual fan and only know Starfish, but I found myself enjoying alot of the later work too. Highlights for me included Blood Money, Lost, On Angel Street, Chaos, The Disillusionist, Destination, Milky Way, and Reptile. It was a really cool experience to hear such a catalog of music performed in such a manner. Definitely a much older crowd, nearly all of whom looked old enough to be my parents. We got there halfway through Untitled 23 and stayed until 1 or 2 songs left of Starfish.

Holy fucking shit. Man or Astro-man? were fucking insane tonight. An early contender for show of the year, without a doubt. Also the loudest show I've seen since MBV at Coachella, louder than A Place to Bury Strangers and Fuck Buttons by a considerable margin. They played for just under an hour, I was going off the whole time but the crowd seemed to just stand there. Oh well.

The Octopus project had their moments as well. The first few and last few songs they played were fucking outstanding, the ones in the middle were pretty meh.

The Dallas venue holds ~1500 people, iirc. (Re: Beirut)

The Austin venue is new, so I don't know anything about it other than that capacity is ~2700. While it's the new location for ACL tapings, not all the shows there will be taped for the broadcast.

Wait, a few of you cockfaces got onto the Surfer Blood list and didn't make it? You can go straight to hell.

They never even checked a list. We walked up and handed them five bucks and they let us in. Fairly empty. I wish the crowd was moving more, but they sounded fantastic. It was a ton of fun. Talked to the drummer and the singer afterwards. Drummer was super nerdy and awkward. Lead singer was really laid back and we had a nice chat. He kept giving me a once over.

Also, my name is on the list at the Lykke Li session. Do you get a +1?

Forgot to mention that Cake was pretty kick ass on Saturday night. Band is super tight and John McCrea is a crazed ring leader who choses his songs at random and demands the attention of the audience with no camera/cellphone interruptions. As he said, "Cake are an old fashioned kind of group." Great mix of songs from every album, even a bunch from Motocade which was awesome. They went on around 8:15 and took one intermission to end at 11. Pretty awesome night.

They're set:
Sad Songs and Waltzes (Willie Nelson cover)
Opera Singer
Stickshifts and Safetybelts
Arco Arena
Frank Sinatra
Ruby Sees All
Long Time
Bound Away
Mustache Man
Sheep Go to Heaven
Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle
----Intermission----
Mexico
Federal Funding
Shadow Stabbing
Wheels
Haze of Love
Jolene
Sick Of You
Never There

Encore:
Short Skirt/Long Jacket
War Pigs (Black Sabbath cover)
The Distance

I'm pretty sure it was getbetter (?) who said they were one of the worst concerts he has ever gone to, and I can TOTALLY see it getting off the rails very quickly. I feared for my life taking a picture, and can only imagine John going crazy on the audience and ruining the whole show. Definitely feel that I lucked out big time. Would recommend anyone checks them out if it was at a small venue where the security could control the electronics per the band's request.

So my band has two upcoming gigs we are quite stoked about.

The first is this coming Monday with Gobble Gobble. These guys were on Pitchforks "Most Promising Bands of 2011" list. I have seen them live before and they are fantastic.

The second is two Fridays from now, where we are playing a ~600 person venue opening up for this band called 100 Monkeys. Apparently one of the dudes from Twilight is in the band or something. This will definately be our biggest show to date.
