Fuck me. Bug and Soft Bulletin would be awesome. Why Milk Man though, and not Reveille or Apple O or The Runners Four?
probably because that's the one they either wanted to play or maybe the one Wayne asked them to peform. plus, they haven't played much of Milk Man the past several times I've seen them so maybe they just felt like airing (more of) it out.

i'd be so psyched if they toured this at a few more select cities...particularly in mine.

Fuuuuuuuck. Soft Bulletin in its entirety?... I am seeing the FLips is September, I hope they work in a bunch of their Soft Bulletin material as practice. I doubt it though.

Yeah, but Milk Man isn't all that great. It's definitely in at least their second tier albums.

I agree. It's good, but there are much better albums they could play.

08-31-2010, 09:37 AM
Wasn't Apple O' their big crossover? I seem to recall that being touted by critics as their new accessible sound. Would be the logical analog to Soft Bulletin.

GeezrRckr
08-31-2010, 09:54 AM
i agree as well. but, see that's part of the appeal...even though Milk Man was after Apple O', it brought back some of that weirdness for which they came from (although i could do without Dream Wanderer).

there are a few super weird jams on it that i have yet to hear live that i'd really be psyched on: Giga Dance, C, Song of Sorn (who is gonna play keys for that one, i wonder?). and, of course it has Milking and Rainbow Silhouette on it which are just so fun live. great Greg songs.

speaking of Deerhoof...in case there are those that either don't have this, or are curious about them, here is a link to a freely distributed live album of theirs, Bibidi Babidi Boo (http://www.archive.org/details/Deerhoof2004-10-03.schwartz). it's pretty awesome!

bmack86
08-31-2010, 09:57 AM
Well, it wasn't the same weirdness, at least to me. I mean, Reveille and Apple O are like opposite sides of the same record, both filled with short, skewed and insanely catchy art damaged experimental pop. Milk Man stretched out and slowed down and just got stranger, but not in the most engaging way. I like it more the The Man The Girl The King and Offend Maggie, and probably more than Green Cosmos, but it's in the lower rungs of their work.

Seattle peeps, lend me your ears...

I've brought it up before but the City Arts Fest from Oct. 20-23 keeps on getting better and better. They've added Cat Power since I last checked in and the festival wristband with guaranteed entry via guest list to one headline gig comes to $67.50 after fees.
http://www.cityartsfest.com/

Some of the talent:

Belle and Sebastian, Blue Scholars, She & Him, Gogol Bordello, Big Boi, Cat Power, Chase Jarvis Blitzen, Trapper Roky Erickson, DJ Spooky and Joshua Roman , The Vaselines, DBR feat. Emeline Michel Alloy Orchestra scores the complete Metropolis, Foals, Phosphorescent...

I used my guest list spot for Cat Power and will be attending Gogol and Foals for sure. Those three alone would have been at least $85. Toss in something on the 22nd, probably the Vaselines, and the wristband is a great value. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Also, I just picked up a ticket to the National for 30% off the ticketnazi total price on CL. Today has been a very good day so far.

People sweat the 90's stuff from Cornershop too much. Brimful of Asha doesn't even reflect the band fairly.

They've gotten darker and more worldly with these last 2 albums. Their lives shows are really fun and eclectic/danceable. Can't wait to see them in the US! Very excited indeed :)

Yep. Listen to Drinkey. She doesn't ignore her indie roots, it's just her indie following that resents her for abondoning Wicker Park for L.A. and making a more accessible record. I saw her twice on the self titled tour and it was two drastically different shows. The first one was wonderful and I was wasted on Tequila and I made her smile by shouting "fuck the critics" between the first two songs. She gave a big smile and said thank you. That was the best show i've ever seen her play. She had finally shed that stage fright she was battling her entire career and she was comfortable and rocked out for almost 2 hours.

The second time around it looked like she was proving the critics right. It was the "mabeline tour" with the Cardigans and it was a very disturbing performance. She was even dressed like a pop star and had one of those Madonna headset microphones on and came on stage wearing her guitar as more of an accessory. I found it rather distturbing watching a theater full of tweens singing "give me your hot white cum" (see H.W.C. on the self titled album).

I would see her again though. I'm pissed I missed her doing Exile from start to finish for the 15 anniversary or something.

btw, it's with the Black Angels (who I am really into). so, who is going to this show at the El Rey? i am likely coming down for T-giving and would love to catch another show at my favorite LA venue. who's in?

funny, i will be up in danville for that weekend, so i may hit up the fillmore show friday night...

where is the fillmore in relation to the macy's tree lighting that night, pretty close if memory serves. the family tradition will have to come first, i'm guessing.

edit: yup, just up o'farrell/geary...nice!

I e-mailed The "LA Times Event organizer" and he assured me there won't be a problem, but I'm still paranoid that some overzealous bouncer is going to be like "lolnope gtfo".

If I could get in for free I would go, but I've seen them so many times just at the HOB already, and there are so many other shows I want to see this fall, that I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to skip this one. I just saw them at Bardot a couple months ago and it was fantastic. That's the second most intimate show I've ever seen of theirs, after Hotel Cafe. I don't really think HOB can beat that. We'll see, tho. It'll be a game time decision.

He recorded an album with Amanda Palmer. The name of the project and album is Evelyn Evelyn. Haven't heard it, but have heard negative reviews. Jason Webley's solo show was quite impressive. He reminded me of a young Tom Waits.

Oh, more info about the Einstuerzende Neubauten concerts versus "Evening With" shows:

And it’ll be more than just a single concert event during the anniversary tour. The band is planning to make a guest performance on an additional day, presenting the audience with a mixed program of the Einstürzende Neubauten, films, solo shows, guests and friends.

More specifically, the band will play a great concert on the first night, while the second night will be divided into 3-part program.

It’ll begin with films and installations. Afterwards the band will play a further, but much shorter concert in which the Neubauten will present material that has never been played live, hasn’t been played live for a long time, or never in this form.

The evening will be rounded off with shows and performances by the individual Einstürzende Neubauten members, recomposed from city to city

similar vein as Throbbing Gristle, but less avant garde. They've reminded me of a dark industrial version of the Bad Seeds (though I'm probably only making that comparison since Einstürzende Neubauten's lead singer is Blixa Bargeld--more or less a member of the Bad Seeds).

Einsturzende Neubauten were one of the pioneering industrial bands. They're known for using power tools and scrap metal as instruments. They have a long and varied discography that covers a lot of ground and is almost uniformly excellent. The lead singer, Blixa Bargeld, was also the guitarist for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds for a good number of years. I don't even know when the last time they played the US was but it was a long fucking time ago. I thought I had heard they were temporarily banned from playing here, but that could have just been a rumor.

Einstuerzende Neubauten at Fillmore? I think that I have to.
how in hell do you guys know *every* damn obscure band. that one live vid you posted is enough to pique my curiosity. hopefully, tix will not be too outrageously priced. do you think this will be an instant sellout or is a box office purchase possible?

Titus Andronicus were quite good as always tonight. Free Energy were a ton of fun too. Definitely a sweet show.

Not really that obscure. If you know anything about industrial past NIN and Ministry, you probably know Einsturzende Neubauten.

I thought the James Murphy DJ set was next week, but apparently it's tonight and I'm not feeling up to snuff. Oh well

James Blunt will be on tour soon, since his new album is coming out.

I knew there would be some excitement about Einstuerzende Neubauten. I'm tempted to try and do both nights. The last time I remember them playing here was 2000. I had literally just started listening to them and we should have gone. We ended up going to the Smell for some KXLU-sponsored noise show because it was cheaper.

Einstuerzende Neubauten is $25 for Slim's, so I'm guessing similar prices for the rest of the tour.
