It looks like the upcoming One Day As A Lion shows this weekend isn't the only news concerning frontman Zack De La Rocha. Los Angeles' own Rage Against The Machine are back to play their first Los Angeles show in ten years for a very important cause. Teaming up with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Rage Against The Machine will be playing a special benefit show for organizations fighting Arizona's SB1070 at the Hollywood Palladium on Friday, July 23, a few days before the law goes into effect on July 29.

Tickets for the special Rage Against The Machine show have not been scheduled for public onsale yet but we'll keep you posted when additional info is announced. Stay tuned Scenestar readers for more news concerning the upcoming Rage Against The Machine show next week at the Hollywood Palladium next week. Official press release after the jump.

When I saw them at Vegoose 07, I only saw half their set (I had to leave early for Iggy & The Stooges, stupid conflict) and the second song they played was Feel Good Hit Of The Summer. I read they played Lost Art of Keeping A Secret later in the set. I heard they haven't played Auto Pilot since Nick Olivieri left the band.

I've seen QOTSA 4-5 times, and every time they have played The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret, and Feel Good Hit of the Summer. Auto Pilot hasn't been played in a while though. I just noticed Josh covered that. For the record all these shows were between 06-08(the free Foo Fighters show in Oct.08 being the last time i've seen them). Damn I miss QOTSA, and now I want to see them at this show.

Pissed the QOTSA show got put on the night I leave for Seattle. I'be been having bad luck with them lately. The last time I saw them was at the Wiltern In December 2005 when John Garcia came on stage and did 3 Kyuss songs with the band. Before that I think i saw them an additional 4 times since 2000 and every time was just fucking killer. It was definitely amazing getting to see the evolution of them from album to album. I haven't seen any Era Vulgaris stuff live though.

I will say that i have incredible memories of the first time I saw them at the El Rey, with Josh, Nick, and Mark Lannegan all singing the end of "Auto Pilot" acapella. Another QOTSA highlight was the extended version of "Regular John" at the Glasshouse during the Songs For The Deaf tour. A third was seeing Mondo Generator with Josh and Dave Grohl in the Troubadour blowing the fucking place apart during "Tension Head."

Fuck. I love QOTSA.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE AND EAGLES OF DEATH METAL ANNOUNCE BENEFIT GIG

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT CANCER TREATMENT FOR
EAGLES OF DEATH METAL BASSIST BRIAN O'CONNOR

TICKETS ON SALE THIS FRIDAY, JULY 16th

Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal have confirmed a benefit appearance at Los Angeles' Club Nokia for Thursday, August 12th.

The show, to be held at Club Nokia, is being held to raise funds for Eagles of Death Metal bassist Brian O'Connor who was recently diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in Los Angeles. Net proceeds from the show will be contributed to a fund which has been established in conjunction with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, to assist with Brian's medical aid and vital living expenses.

Tickets for the August 12th performance will be available beginning at 10am on Friday, July 16th.

The Los Angeles gig will be the second Josh Homme-organized benefit for O'Connor, the first being a show by Them Crooked Vultures which was held Monday, July 5th @ London's O2 Academy.

Tickets for Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal at Club Nokia are $50 for General Admission and $100 & $250 for VIP Pit & Balcony tickets.

I just read this little excerpt on thescenestar.com concerning the Rage show:

Projected proceeds from the concert along with donations raised by The Sound Strike Fund are expected to exceed over $300,000.

So let's do the math - the Palladium holds 4,000, and at $100/ticket that would be $400,000 raised. And that quote mentions $300,000 coming from proceeds from the show and donations.

So my hope is tickets are more in the $75 range.

DUB CLUB 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Wed. July 28
@ Echoplex
________________________________________

Yes friends it's been 10 years since we started playing our King Tubby and Dr Alimantado records to small crowds of rhythm lovers...from Spaceland to The Shortstop to The Echo to The Echoplex , and now this summer using both The Echo and Echoplex spaces , the vibes and the crowds have grown week by week. We never imagined when we started Dub Club that we would be putting on shows with our musical heroes , names like U-Roy, Scientist , The Mighty Diamonds , The Melodians , Big Youth, and on and on...we never imagined that we would put on the first ever LA shows for many crucial reggae performers , like Ranking Trevor , Tappa Zukie , Welton Irie , and more...not too mention all the talented local artists like Jah Faith who rock the house every week... so thank you to everyone who comes out every week, and all the staff at the Echo and Echoplex, and most of all thanks to the island of Jamaica for inventing this music of endless beauty and invention , REGGAE.

SISTER NANCY
Sister Nancy is a favorite at the Dub Club and always brings the fire when she comes through. Her tune "Bam Bam" is loved by fans of all genres of music worldwide, but there's nothing like hearing the original female dj live and direct on the mic.
GENERAL TREES
General Trees will be making his first stop at the Dub Club and we can't wait to hear his gravel voice booming out over our PA. Trees had many Jamaican hits in the 80s and he is known for his great live performances and his arsenal of lyrics.
TIPPA LEE
Tippa Lee started in the music business toasting on his fathers sound system age 8 , "standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic". He made his first recording at King Tubbys studio at age 12 , and later had a Jamaican No 1 hit with 'No Trouble We" in the 80s.
ECHODELIC SOUNDSYSTEM
as usual with Sound System style shows at the Dub Club , all the performers will be backed up by the Echodelic selectors on the turntables

This is right during Siggraph too, so it makes sense.

Grace Jones was amazing tonight. Coachella missed out on one hell of a show.

Peaches (oddly) was also most excellent. She recently broke her leg, so had a naked hermaphrodite pushing her around in a wheelchair for most of the set.

According to an email I got, Autolux is doing a DJ set tonight at the Detroit Bar.

I got the same email, Detroit Bar has some great shows coming up that I wasn't aware of:

8/07 - Ariel Pink
9/19 - Japandroids
10/09 - Land of Talk/Besnard Lakes
10/12 - Melvins

That LOT/Besnard Lakes must be them coming off of the Culture COllide show. That's a good sign they'll play the same in Echo Park as well. Groovy.

Swell Season were fantastic again tonight. I think this was my 13th time seeing them, and they still give me chills. Glen always finds some way to make it interesting and entertaining. I've seen them on a street corner, in a record shop, a movie theater, the El Rey, Masonic Lodge, Wiltern, Orpheum, San Diego Open Air Theater, Greek, Coachella, and now headlining the Hollywood Bowl. It was the perfect show. The sound at the Bowl is seriously unparalleled, for that size. I could hear every sigh and whisper clearly. They had to kind of speed through the set to make curfew, so Glen didn't talk that much in between songs, but at the end he gave a nice little speech about how Los Angeles has treated him so well over the past few years. He even mentioned playing "Say it to me now" 15 years ago at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. That would have been amazing to see. It's been so much fun watching these guys blossom over the years and become a more cohesive band. I do wish he would have tried to do the acoustic Say it to me now version tho. He managed it at the Greek. It probably would have thrown his voice tho.

She and Him were pretty damn boring. Every time I watch them, I can't get into it. It's not bad; it's just not interesting. I keep wanting M. Ward to sing more.

Didn't get there in time to see Bird and the Bee.

The place was totally sold out. Good job, Glen. You deserve it.

Awesome.

I think the first thing I knew about the Hollywood Bowl as a child was that my dad's mom had taken him and his sister to see The Beatles there in 1965. My grandmother loved Hollywood; it was her home. She loved the movie stars, loved the glitz. She was always cursing the wretched San Fernando Valley. I was never exactly sure why she moved here. Probably not too long after she died my parents took my brother and I to the Bowl one afternoon when it was empty, to climb around through the benches. It was like a vast playground with a sleeping history. Looking down at the stage in the sunlight that afternoon, with the Hollywood Hills looming above its white dome.. I guess that’s something I’ll always remember. It wasn't as important necessarily as the trip we took to the Ambassador Hotel, where Robert Kennedy was shot, but it was something special anyway. The next time I was there I was 11, for The Moody Blues, though not exactly by choice. I would have much rather been with my mom at the charity event Paul McCartney played a few months previous. I've since seen there: an orchestrated Beatles night (conducted by George Martin), Coldplay, Björk, Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, Roger Waters, The Who, Paul McCartney and Peter Gabriel.

The Bowl is not built for rock concerts. The layout and the vibe breed eating and drinking and talking. People throw stuff at you if you stand. There must be a policy about decibel level because the sound is never quite loud enough. For the first half of the Coldplay show the entire stack of speakers on the left side of the stage wasn't working. For Roger Waters it was crackling and popping in and out. I could hear the girl behind me eating popcorn louder than I could hear Peter Gabriel's orchestra. There's also a strict curfew due to all the houses in close proximity. The benches leave you touching shoulders with those you're sitting next to. It's an all-around uncomfortable situation, and certainly not very rock 'n' roll.

That said, it's gorgeous. The vibe is light and airy, and there is no denying its magic. Likely tied into that, there is history. Not just The Beatles. It first opened in 1922, home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Dylan's played there. Frank Sinatra. Pavarotti. Simon and Garfunkel. Monty Python. Pink Floyd. I’m not familiar enough with classical music, but I imagine that list must be just as impressive.

Now. There are these guys, they go under the guise The Frames, or possibly The Swell Season. The bands are two sides of the same coin, really. With the addition of Marketa’s lovely voice and piano playing, or with any one of the amazing drummers they’ve had, there is the same underlying spirit. I've seen them more than 60 times in too many cities and countries to name. I've left my house hours before dawn to fly across the U.S. to see a 40 minute performance in the middle of a festival, I've driven hours into the desert to see a similar set in 100+ degree heat, I've flown 11 hours to Dublin and practically walked straight to the queue, I’ve driven seven hours through mountains in Colorado to see them at their worst and at their best, I've stumbled from venues to bars to hotel rooms to airports to shuttles directly to work on no sleep only to go straight from work to the next gig. I've sat in the front row of a 6,000 capacity venue here in L.A., and I've woken up at the crack of dawn in Belfast and taken a bus to Derry to see them in a record shop that holds 50 people.

For over six years I've watched while they've fought and fought and fought - winning almost every time, small victories. I've watched as the venues grew larger, as the fan-base changed, as they made a film, as they won an Oscar, as they did late night TV, as they were welcomed into the arms of Hollywood. For seven years they've been more than a soundtrack - they've been confusion and clarity, they've been darkness and hope, they've been the words and sounds to things I would not otherwise have made sense of. They've been a source of inspiration, of comfort, of strength, and of friendship.

On Sunday they are playing one of the biggest shows of their lives - not just in gravity, but in size. On Sunday I will be a smiling speck in a sea of 17,375 other people, here, in my home.

glad to hear it was a great show. I really want to see them and was bummed when I missed their Coachella set. I just was not feeling going to a show at all today. Luckily I happened to have a dinner feast in probably the best restaurant in LA i've ever been to. Hopefully they play the Largo again one of these days. I can't picture a better venue to see them in.

Props to you catching em 13 times and major props to them for selling out the bowl! Where did you see them on the street corner?
That Hollywood Bowl article is great too, who wrote that?

Glen tweeted that article. I think one of their long-time fans or something.

When we were waiting in line to see them at a record shop, Glen came outside and played for us on the sidewalk. Literally right in front of me. I was about to type "closest I've ever been to him while he played" but then I realized I was that close inside the record shop as well.

I can't believe I missed that Largo show, tho. I remember it in October of 06, and at that point all I knew was it was Glen's side project. I was going to get tickets for Jenniehoo and myself for her birthday, and just never got around to it. I was kicking myself a month later when I saw them open for Damien Rice at the Orpheum. Largo would have been amazing. But I've come to terms with it since I saw them at the Masonic Lodge. That place is just unbelievable for their type of music.

you know they played Largo in March of this year, right? i let em go because it was $40 bucks. stupid decision in hindsight. Masonic Lodge must have been incredible.

and opening for Damien Rice?! Ugh, can't believe I missed that. Speak of which, where the hell is Damien Rice? I hope he's got some new stuff coming soon. Talk about someone that needs to play at the Largo

hah i totally forgot about that. yeah, i found out about the show after it sold out. that would have been pretty rad. i love the new largo. i never went to the old largo for comparison tho.

the masonic show was intense. i was front row center, and it was just the two of them with an acoustic guitar and a baby grand. at one point marketa even sat on his lap while singing a song together. the sound is just incredible in there. every show i see there feels like something special that we're never going to witness again.

yeah, glen's opened for damien many times. first time i ever heard of him was when the frames opened for damien at the wiltern in 04. he had just broken his leg and was hobbling around on stage with a full cast, yet still managed to be utterly captivating. i remember specifically thinking to myself "i need to keep tabs on this band." then swell season opened for damien at both the orpheum shows in 06. i bought tickets for both of them cause damien and glen are my two favorite singers in the world. damien slightly beats out over glen. if he had toured more, he would have played the Bowl by now. I don't know why it takes him so long in between albums. maybe it's for his sanity. he's quite eccentric.

oh also, here's a little story to add -

swell season played at mccabe's guitar shop in santa monica a couple years ago. my friend lars (who i introduced to the band's music) had tickets and had an extra scalped one for me, but i had just seen them a couple times recently and decided i didn't want to splurge on the $70 ticket. worst. decision. ever. first off, the place holds about 50 people. when they started to play "you ain't goin nowhere," glen didn't have his harmonica. so my friend lars just decides to pull his harmonica out of his pocket (which he just brings with him everywhere he goes cause's he's a nerd) and plays the harmonica part from his seat. glen's head shoots up and he looks around and asks who is playing. he brings lars to the front of the room and they jam together. then halfway through the set, damien rice comes out and plays a few songs. then after the show, glen invited lars up to his dressing room. so lars is hanging out with the band and damien. then after about an hour, damien says he's hungry, lars suggests Swingers, and fucking damien and a few of his friends and LARS all go to swingers together to eat. he invited damien over to his apt to jam since he was only a few mins away from swingers and damien was seriously considering it and then decided against it last minute cause he was tired.

fuckin a. had i spent a measly $70 i would have been with him on this entire adventure.

Pretty sure the box office will ONLY be handling will call during a show. Especially something like this Friday. An all will-call show at the palladium is going to be something of a mess and I can't see any way that they're going to be spending time processing orders for tickets to other shows at that time.
