I was going to try to see Air tonight, but the tickets are bit more than I can afford. Turns out Pere Ubu is playing The Modern Dance straight through and then doing their most recent album straight through, so looks like I'll be attending that instead. Fucking awesome.

Got back from the Cymbals Eat Guitars/Bear In Heaven show. The first opener, whose name I can't remember and don't wanna look up, were decent. Indie poppy, not overly memorable, had a few cool harmonies. Bear in Heaven absolutely killed it. They blew me away so hard. They played every song off Beast Rest Forth Mouth, opening with the first track and closing with the last. As Brandon said, Deafening Love was the highlight: it was a bulldozer of sound. They really can perform, and they've got their sound down so pat. It was their first LA show and the crowd seemed to love them. So much, in fact, that many of them left before Cymbals Eat Guitars. No matter, as they were still great. TallGuy didn't like them at all, but I thought they put on a spectacular set of lonesome crowded songs. They've got that Built to Spill/early Modest Mouse vibe, and they pull it off really well live. Tons of volume, lots of guitar squall, and I really dig the lead singer's live vocals. They did a few new songs that I enjoyed, and just really made me happy. I've been looking forward to this show for months, and it didn't disappoint.

Note: bmack means that I didn't like Cymbals Eat Guitars, not Bear in Heaven.

BIH were absolutely fantastic. I'm one of what seems like the few who wasn't really crazy about their latest album, and maybe that's why they caught me by surprise so much. They just really did everything right, definitely in the upper echelon of live performances I've witnessed so far this year.

The first band was called Freelance Whales, who for some reason I've heard a lot about recently. They weren't really my cup of tea, and I lost interest after the first couple songs.

Cymbals Eat Guitars were pretty bad in my opinion. And I really enjoy their album a good deal, too, which is why I'm surprised I was as underwhelmed as I was about their live show. I've never walked out of a show before, but I almost did a few times tonight. It was just painful to endure toward the end.

I thought Bear in Heaven were fantastic. We left before Cymbals. Sounds like I didn't miss anything. You could tell that people were going to leave when the Bear in Heaven vocalist called for applause for Cymbals and 20 people clapped.

Pere Ubu doing The Modern Dance was absolutely positively fantastic. Besides the fact that David Thomas can't really scream as well as he did 30 years ago, it sounded just as good as the album. He introduced every song with witty weird anecdotes, harassed his band, freaked out and screamed at himself a few times, and walked offstage in the middle of a song during the encore. He's 100% a performer and probably really fucking disturbed. But god were they good tonight. If you're in Cleveland (right) or New York, you really really should see them do this show. The first set, which was some kind of interpretation fo the play Pere Ubu, of which I only caught about half of, wasn't anything too impressive though, but not terrible or anything.

Super good set list! Bet they played it all in under 80 min too. Ha! SF needs some Bad Religion love. Not a Warped Tour set, but some actual shows. I've been trying to explain to my girlfriend what a rush these guys are live. I remember my first show at the Hollywood Pallidium in the early 90's, biggest pit I've ever seen at an indoor venue. Not that a pit is a turn on for most girls, but just the energy these guys can generate is amazing.

it was a 90min set... they were mentioning 'complaints' during their set that people thought their sets were too long for a punk show....and everyone started booing... I dont really care how long a set is...30 songs is a great average for them.... I do think they need to get rid of their formula for this tour....go back to the themed nights... but im not really complaining, every song is great... tonight should be just as much fun! and they are doing a US tour in October...

The Tobacco show at the Echo tonight was thoroughly enjoyable. Although I wasn't prepared to see quite so many live penises via chat roulette being projected on the screen in the background. That was really weird, but what do you expect.

The Hood Internet wasn't really to my liking, and the first opener, Baths, was fucking terrible. Think Owl City vocals over beats. Terrible.

ha. hopefully Richard Butler's pipes are still in good shape. if they are, i'm there.

He's still in top form. Caught The Furs last year with The Happy Mondays, which was terrible even by their standards, but otherwise it was a great gig. Probably 4 songs each from Talk Talk Talk, Mirror Moves and Forever Now, if I remember correctly. I can't believe they're only playing Lee's Palace in Toronto, that venue is over 5 times smaller than where they were on their last run and it almost sold out.

My first Air experience was really surreal tonight at Disney Hall. Since it was my first time I didn't have any past experience to compare it to, and I thought they were really great. The sound was fantastic at the venue like usual, and the fact that I scored a front row center seat in the presale didn't hurt anything.

They played for just under 90 minutes, and seemed to be very appreciative of what was once again a very polite and non-talkative audience at Disney Hall.

What really stood out for me with the exquisite sound tonight was Nic's bass, it was at the perfect volume and just really hit me right. Two thumbs up. They definitely weren't "boring live" tonight, that's for sure.

Washed Out/Small Black/Pictureplane was fun but kind of boring. We got there right after Young Prisms finished, but I imagine it was more of the same. Anyway, the three bands we saw sounded good but nothing was special about it. Washed Out was easily the best there. He played a few songs by himself (which is essentially him singing and playing with a sequencer), including 2-3 new ones that were good. His set really picked up after Small Black joined him, but it was still missing something. You can tell that he is getting used to the whole live thing, so I'm cutting him some slack. Anyway, everyone sounded good, and it was fun, but nothing about the evening was spectacular.

Not that this does any good to anybody since it is sold out, but was it ever discussed that The xx are playing the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur? That would be a great place to see them. I really want to go back to that venue.

I don't care about them enough for that drive, but had I known about it in time to get tickets I think I would have just to go back to the area. I do really like their album though and their new EP is pretty good too, especially "Teardrops."

Speaking of the Henry Miller Library, this was just posted on Yo La Tengo's Facebook page:

In a special performance designed specifically for the this space, Yo La Tengo will be in Big Sur to support the Henry Miller Library. A one night only special benefit concert is not to be missed! If you love music, the Henry Miller Library, and supporting the arts in Big Sur, this is the concert to attend. Graciously performing exclusively to support the Library, Yo La Tengo will be the event of the Spring. There are a limited number of tickets, so be sure to reserve yours as soon as you can! Tickets are available at our website http://www.henrymiller.org You can also get yours by visiting the library or calling (831) 667 2574

Apparently the band has a revolving lineup (Mickey Rourke has drummed for them!!) - Mick Jones only sung his own number. The rest of the time they had a bad rapper and some soul diva. It was a mish-mash of bad ideas, all blended to make a clusterfuck.

The Clash cover was the only good thing about it.
