Just bought tickets to K'Naan with Tinariwen in Vancouver. I bought one ticket for my little sister as her Christmas presant and it will be her first real concert ever. Well, she has seen Hillary Duff and the Jonas Brothers... but I don't count those. Anyways, it should be a most excellent show.

I got the cheap ones for tonight. I was scared of such thing so I paid the extra 2.50 to print at home. And the tickets are normal and say nothing about the gaga offer so Im good. And Doors @ 10 Show @ 11. Consequence & Chip Opening so I say Cudi is around 12

No. And I don't hate Andrew WK, I just have only heard the singles and he always struck me as someone who mainly appeals to fist-pumping frat boy types. But I must be wrong, because a lot of people on here whose tastes in music I respect seem to like him.

The thing about Andrew W.K. is that his music should be taking as tongue-in-cheek. He is not serious at all... but at the same time he is completely serious. Sure his music does attrack "fist-pumping frat boy types," but his music go so much deeper than that. I know the word has become over used, but Andrew W.K. makes his music in an ironic sort of way. I say this because at the surface level his music just seems like party music for meatheads, but it is actually intended for other purposes.

I went to a spoken word lecture by Andrew W.K. and he explained exactly what he means by the word "party." To Andrew W.K., a part is not simply a place where you get drunk and hang out with friends. A party means something to each person individually. Perhaps to some people a party is getting drunk and hanging out with friends. But to others, a party is sitting down and reading a good book by yourself, to others is putting on headphones and loosing yourself in a world of music, to others its travelling and exploring the world, to others its skateboards, and so on and so forth. Essentially, what a "party" is, according to Andrew W.K., is the place where you feel more comfortable, a place where you can be yourself and have fun. You see, Andrew W.K. isn't about partying and getting drunk, Andrew W.K. is about being positive, looking forward into the future seeing oportunities, he is about having fun, he is about being yourself.

When I saw him live in 2003, he gave little motivations speeches between every song. He told people to live their lives to the fullest, don't let what others say restrict what you want to do with your lives, have fun, take care of each other and so on and so fourth. Yes, a little cheesey. But god damn if it doesnt make you feel good! Espeically when this is put in between his music.

To me, his music creates an incredible atmosphere of feeling good. I can put on his music, and just feel... good. I can feel at ease. It will put a smile on face. Musically, like I said it may attract "fist-pumping frat boy types," but his appeal si much broader once you look past the surface. As for the music itself, listen to the production on his first album I Get Wet. It is aboslutely incredible. He has so many layers of guitars, drums and synthesizers, and they are put together so incredibly well it impresses me every time I hear it. There is a reason I Get Wet is my #7 album of the decade.

rage patton
12-24-2009, 01:00 PM
But Chris, he hasn't played a set with a full band since his short Japan tour in 2006. All of his tours since then have been either been lecture style spoken word, solo with a piano, or solo with a backing string section. This will be his first tour with a band in 4 years. That is why I am excited. If it was him solo at the warped tour, I wouldn't care much.

I think Rage summed it up pretty well, musically. He's taken his backgrounds as a virtuoso classical musician and rock and roller and combined them in a pretty unique way. He makes you feel good and he unites diverse crowds, people who would normally be enormous douche bags to each other become friends and have fun in way I've never seen before.

While I do love down to earth, every man kind of bands, I also love over the top rock 'n' roll mythology and rock star self mythologizing, so it only comes natural that I would love AWK. He is both. The fact that he is simultaneously completely contrived and sickeningly sincere. His background has largely been in hardcore, metal and most of all noise bands, somewhere around the turn of the decade he decided that he didn't like the person he had become so he created a character and chose to live as it. He became positive through forcing himself to be positive because that was how the fictional him lived. He has also allowed this character to evolve, delving into different personas. This hasn't really picked up much notice because he did it subtly, and it also corresponds to his gaining and losing fame.

When he started getting noticed he portrayed himself as a wiry, hyper, party loving hooligan. How he appears on the cover of I Get Wet. He kept with this for a while before he started to get famous.

His height of fame (though as a personality, rather than a recording artist) came around the time of his second album, the Wolf. He had significantly bulked up and began preaching from the stage like a minister at a pulpit. He behaved as kind of a messianic superhero. He was ultra fan accessible and was over concerned and interested with each and every person that he met (I once talked to him for about half an hour and I had to be the one to end the conversation. I felt bad because there was a line of people waiting to meet him behind me. He did this with everyone), if you met him once, no matter how briefly, he'd remember you.

Then he dropped off the map.
As it turns out, he's had some legal trouble that prohibited him from releasing material in the US, and he found out after cutting his hair that he had signed a bad contract and was not legally allowed to perform as Andrew WK if he did not "look like Andrew WK" (hence the wigs he's been wearing the past couple years). He used this time to play with his image.
He reappeared after a couple years, thin, almost gaunt, dressed entirely in black (which sounds like nothing, but was a big deal to his hard core fans). Sometimes he had long hair, sometimes he didn't. There were rumors going around that Andrew WK was a character played by an actor and the actor that we'd all grown to love had been fired and replaced. The "dark" or "fake" AWK is sometimes called "Steev Mike", which is an old stage name he used before settling on his actual name. Some fans (the particularly dumb ones) still insist that these are not the same people. He set up a kind of light vs dark, yin/yang thing. He started these rumors himself, though he denies it. His music became strange (for him, anyway). His third album, probably his best, Close Calls With Brick Walls divided fans. While it was still recognizably him, not all the songs followed the "Party Hard" formula, it was strange and sparse in comparison.

He getting back to basics now, because I don't think his whole battle with his own psyche through multiple personas thing was really catching on.

Awesome explanation and summation of the character of Andrew W.K.. Most people don't know about him and his history as a producer and the artists he has worked with. One artists he has worked very closely with is Wolf Eyes, and his production on a couple of his EPs has recieved some acclaim. However, back on track, When Close Calls With Brick Walls came out, I was very confused. It didn't sound like him, and it didn't look like him. I still can't believe he lost all that bulk and muscle. He looks so baby faced clean shaven. But really, Close Calls... is your favorite AWK album? To be honest, it is my least favorite. And its not even the music, its his voice. I don't know what he was going for, but there was only 2 or 3 songs on that album where it even sounds like him singing.

Anyways, I also met Andrew W.K. once and he was pretty much the nicest, friendliest and one of the most intelligent people I have ever had a conversation with. The same thing happened to me. We talked for about 20 minutes... then I excused myself because I felt bad because there was about 5 or 6 other people waiting there to talk. Great guy.

I just read Andrew W.K.'s complete wiki page and this last page of this thread...interesting dude. I've always liked his positive energy (especially the video of him at the Gathering of the Juggalos!), never knew it was a character he forced himself to play which just makes it more interesting to me.

and yes, I am completely wasting time on Christmas when I should be getting ready to go over to my parent's house.

be advised that there is no alcohol served at the Smell and the owner is pretty serious about people sneaking any in now (used to be a bit of a problem) or around the venue in the alley.

Her second album (as an adult) is a collaboration with Beck, and while she loved having him take control of the project, it's that same lack of control that prevents her from wanting to sing the album live. Currently she's back in Los Angeles, working with Beck and his band to figure out how to play their new songs in front of an audience, or if that's even something she can do. "I really want to be able to do it, but it has to be a pleasure, it can't be a terrifying experience," she says. "I love the songs, and I love singing them, so I just have to find that pleasure again."

(For real response: Sorry.)

I got tired of hearing about it all over and decided to just rapidshare it. Will watch later tonight.

So more tour dates are surfacing, including a third in New York, which is weird since the first two aren't sold out:
1/19-20 The Bell House - Brooklyn, NY
1/23 Hiro Ballroom - NY, NY
1/25 9:30 Club - Washington, DC
1/27 Institute of Contemporary Art - Boston, MA
1/28 Olympia Theater - Montreal, QC
1/29 Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto, ON

I think the 9:30 Club's capacity is equivalent to the combined total of the three NY shows plus the Boston show.

you sign up, get on the list. They overbook it so it's first come first serve, but from what I hear you generally don't have to get there SUPER early.

It's up to the bands how long they want to play. Some bands play a couple of songs, some bands play for over an hour

The taping's free, you don't need to buy anything. Just register with 1iota.com, select how many tickets you want, and confirm your selection in your account (if you don't confirm, they may have temporarily run out or it's on hold for some reason -- in this case, you'll probably have to keep checking back if/when they release more tickets). In terms of "first come, first-served" it's general admission standing, so people line up early if they want to be front-center.

For the show, they usually tape 1 complete song and another one played during the closing credits. For the audience, artists/bands usually play an average of 6 songs.

let us know what you think, swan. i came close to buying tix to that show, but price, coupled with them being kinda dull the last time i saw them, had me passing. thx.

My wife loves Cake. That had a lot to do with the initial ticket purchase, but I made a play list of the songs they have been playing, and I forgot how much I like them. The last time I saw the was at Outside Lands, and they were great.

yeah, that time slot was conflict hell for me. cake lost. i haven't listened to them in a long time but love their music. great songwriting and fun hooks. have fun and please do report back (esp on any new shit they play). i'd love to be able to look forward to their next show.

I honestly have no idea what I'm doing tonight anymore. It's pretty much Atlas Sound, Drop The Lime, Bassface Rewind. I'm so fucking torn it sucks.

Although if I did Atlas Sound, I could prob do one of the other two as well...

rumor on the street is the emeralds/hair police/cold cave show in ohio is actually gonna turn into a tour. that would be fucking unbelievable. i would love to see a lot of the people that were at the last cold cave show get their faces ripped off by hair police and then glued back together by emeralds.

Just as I'm trying to move out of here we get a slew of really great stuff coming up, with that probably being the best match up, so that's good news.

It's inspired... Three radically different bands... But at the same time, a damn near perfect selection.

Atlas Sound really blew me away tonight (or last night?), it wasn't anything I was expecting. He played completely solo, sitting in a chair, with only an acoustic guitar and his voice, using a loop pedal and his typically gigantic range of other effects. And musically it was just stunning. Did a lot of the Logos numbers, and a couple others, all of which were completely born anew in the live setting. Tune-Yards were a great surprise for me as well, I also was not expecting such a fantastic show from her.

The Natural History Museum was awesome... wasn't planning on going to that Yeasayer show in a month, but now I think I'll have to. Luckily my friends took care of the parking for me too. Everything ran really smoothly, and the setting was the coolest.

I don't know if 'Cross The Breeze being on pretty much every set list of the new year and a few before means it's incredibly likely they play it tonight or it's more likely that they drop it for a different song, but I really fucking want that tonight.

Bring out some Murray Street tracks too, why not?

You pretty much had the exact opposite experience I had. What time did u get there? They weren't letting people in the hall where he was playing and there was a massive line up. So I ended up watching in the main T-rex area from a projection on a wall. Absolutely miserable, we left a few songs in. The songs sounded good, but there is no way in hell I was watching a wall. I would never return to see a show there on friday nights, unless you could guarantee entry to the concert hall

Yeah, tUne-YarDs absolutely killed it last night. She puts on an AMAZING show. Atlas Sound was decent, but he was just sitting there playing his acoustic guitar and pedals, so after the manic energy of tUne-YarDs it was a bit of a let down. We left early, but the opening set was so worth it.

I'm thinking about trying to score a ticket for SY at the Wiltern tonight. Probably just take the subway there.
