anyone else going to the Mum show in LA at the Orpheum in October? I haven't been to that place before. Does Mum put on a good show? How is the parking? If i'm in a hotel, should i get a cab to/from? Just some questions to pass the time. :)
I'll be there. Dunno about your questions though, never been to the Orpheum either. I'm way stoked though.
As for Arcade Fire/LCD at the Bowl vs. Damien Rice at the Greek, I'll be at Damien Rice at the Greek. Already saw Arcade Fire at the Greek and LCD at El Rey. That bowl show will definetly be amazing though.

I'm still iffy on the next few shows I'm seeing...
I mean, I have Daft Punk down for sure on the 21st, but otherwise it's all up in the air;
Still haven't gotten 311/Matisyahu tickets yet.
Still haven't gotten Gogol Bordello at HOB tickets yet.
Still haven't gotten Peter Bjorn and John at HOB tickets yet.
And, in the far-off horizon, I still need to get Air and Smashing Pumpkins tickets for their shows on the 20th and 19th of September, respectively (or is it 21st and 20th?...).
The Air show may hinge on whether or not I can get a ride from Santa Cruz to SF and back... Ugh...

I really want to give AIR a try again. I was pretty disappointed at Coachella this year, but I think in a better setting they could be a great act to see live. In the last 4 pages of this thread I saw some mentions about AIR playing in San Francisco. Can I get a location, date(s)? Thanks.
EDIT: nevermind, looked on ticketmaster and found it. checked AIR's website first, but no mention.

This is where I start bitching and moaning about how much I dislike the Phoenix music scene. No one comes here during the summer.
Then, amy will agree.
Then, John will disagree, and list off a dozen Japanese synth-polka bands I've read about in the margins of Paste magazine, all playing the Modified, where they don't serve beer and the average age of the attendees is about 14.
Then I'll get desperate and go see some decrepit old fart at an Indian (ahem, native american) casino and regret it.
Then, John will post about how great Ichiro Kawasaki were at Modified last night.
Then, amy will post about how she never goes to shows anymore anyway.
Other Phoenix people might also chime in about how much better it was before Nita's closed.
by posting all that ^^^ I've saved you people from having to actually read it post by post.

Tuesday: Los Lobos
I saw Los Lobos last week at an Indian (ahem, native american) casino. Actually, the set up was, they played in the parking lot of said casino. The high that day was about 115, fortunately by night it had cooled down to a manageable 105 or so. Of course the black asphalt kept us all warm rather nicely. There were probably 2500 chairs set up and maybe 1000 of those were occupied. Everyone was in some sort of stupor. The band seemed very far away and I got there late so if they played anything off of 'Kiko and the Lavendar Moon' I didnt' hear it.

I've seen them probably half a dozen times and been a fan since their first English-language EP in 1983. Last week's show didn't hold a candle to their heyday but I don't know how much of that was the lack of crowd energy and the weird setup and how much was the band. But they weren't bad, not at all; they certainly didn't embarass themselves. They can still play.
Now, Justin can put in his I <3 RetroJunk.com picture here vvv

Um, yeah, that was not the setlist. Somebody's idea of a dream setlist. The real setlist included "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want", "How Soon Is Now?", "Every Day Is Like Sunday", "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side", "The Queen Is Dead", "Last of the International Playboys", etc. The Ringleader stuff is actually rather good live.
The Norva is your standard 1500 capacity open floor plus wrap-around, non-seated balcony club. Great place to see such a legend, though. I mean, the Universal show was unreal, but I was in the back row and I don't think they had screens. I should've brought my camera...was led to believe they would be searching, and the tickets specifically stated "no cameras".
Then again, if I had brought a camera, the redneck meth-addict security might have killed me. After the show they were yelling threats at us fans hanging around the barrier trying to score setlists. Some guy jumped up and grabbed one, and three of them knocked him down and beat the crap out of him. He was black, so that's probably why.

They didn't play anything off their first CD, "Kyoto University" other than the hit so most of the set was from "Disaster Prevention Research Institute" with a few songs from "Research Center for Earthquake Prediction" which comes out in Japan in a week or so but they weren't sure when it would come out here and they couldn't sell us any copies.

actually i'd say that would cost a hundred dollars or so.
$55 for the ticket, $17 for food, two beers, and a tip in the restaurant behind the venue. They have this racket going where if you eat at said restaurant before a show, they let you inside a few minutes before everyone that's in line in front of the venue itself. I imagine I would not have been able to get a pit ticket for a LA show for less than $500.

I understand how you feel. Eisley is opening up for The Fray next Monday, but I know they'll only play maybe 7 songs, so I don't know if it's worth it to buy tickets. I'm not really sure who The Fray are.
TomAz
07-10-2007, 11:48 AM
It turns out that The Fray's music has resonated with lots of people: they are one of the most licensed bands of 2006, with their music being featured on Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy, What About Brian, NCIS, One Tree Hill and Bones as well as in HBO's summer promos. Joe King: "I would say my favorite so far would be the recent HBO spot and the Grey's Anatomy spot, both using ‘How To Save A Life.' I remember last year seeing the Aqualung HBO spot and was shocked and almost jealous by how good it was. I called our managers and asked if we could get a spot like that, and I remember him saying, 'That's a tough one.' When I watched our HBO spot I didn't move, I don't even remember breathing because I had the chills."
also, the very first sentence in the website bio includes the word "earnest".

Also, I am also not old enough to go to the Gogol show at Richards by a matter of days. Stupid late birthday. Oh, I also cannot bring myself to go see the Pumpkins.

I feel like Myths is inconsistent in that it has songs like Golden Skans that are very accessible, Mom-friendly pop, and then there are songs which are less accessible (imo) like Four Horsemen. It's good for singles for rock radio play, but I wonder if people are surprised when they actually buy and listen to the whole album.

got tix for the Interpol show in San Francisco on Oct. 20th. Anyone else going? I have to say that the Coachella performance is what really motivated me, so once again, thank you COACHELLA!!! Also, I recommend the iTunes pre-order deals. I had never done this, but I knew I was going to BUY the new Interpol album (even though I think someone on here posted a link to rip it for free) and then I saw the iTunes offer of an extra track plus a custom pre-sale password, so I went for it and it has paid off. Looking forward to a great show in a great city. Never been to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, but it has to be a better venue for Interpol compared to the Forum in LA.

Well you kind of didnt need to get the iTunes pre sale for SF, a bunch of us did and you probably ended up lucking out a ton because a lot of us had problems with the download and whatnot. But we got our passwords. Oh and Live 105 was doing a pre sale tomorrow anyway, so it still isnt the toughest ticket to get in town. The Bill Graham holds about 9,000 its entirely GA and there is a balcony too. Sounds pretty good, and shoudl be better than the forum but I guess you will find out. I am going too on this date, a weekend in SF is always a good weekend.

Sorry, my mistake. It's not just a concert. It's AIR. The band I missed at Coachella 2004 because of midterms and at the Bowl because of tl;dr drama. The band for which I stood on my bleeding-blister-infested feet of my fevered, highly sick body for over two hours at Coachella this year, only to see them perform for 20 minutes. The world ows me an Air concert, and a good seat at that.

And since I work for the mafia I can do lots of things that makes my shcedule "felixible". Well in reality I ask for time off waaaay in advance and usually its like a day so I can have it arranged that I am off so it works out and my boss knows how I do things so its easier to figure out. All I gotta do is make sure my ass gets back home in time for work if I go to a show out of town and work the next morning.

Santa Cruz runs a shuttle to the airport in Oakland, and probably to SFO as well. So if you need to fly back, it is really convenient and easy. You could also take BART to Fremont and eventually get to SFO that way.

You gotta wait to see if this one ends up being 18 and up or 21 and up. Mezzanine does shows one way or the other. Lets hope its 18 and up.
