Yeah but there's a difference. General consensus is that Grizzly Bear and M83 are at the top of their games right now, whereas Death Cab is not. If Narrow Stairs was even a remote candidate for AOTY last year like Saturdays=Youth was and Veckatimest is this year, then it wouldn't be pompous. But because it wasn't, it is.

A band's popularity and the quality of their output are not always on the same trajectory. Popularity should be part of the reason the bands are chosen since the thought process is to get more young people exposed to classical music. If we went with general consensus, i would have had my right to marry my partner taken away (oh wait, that actually happened...), okay, better example, if we went with general consensus, Jonas Bros are f-in gods. Does that mean Jonas Bros should play with an orchestra...umm, no, but a band's that's been around for a while (DCFC) with a fairly large fanbase (large enough to sellout the bowl) does make a good/interesting choice to have play with an orchestra.

I agree with M83 and GB being at the top of their game now, but wasn't Grizzly Bear at Walt Disney hall way before Veckatimest was released? Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, a band with only 2 releases, the 2nd one being the one that more people finally started to notice, with only a sold-out Troubadour show under their belt (at least in the LA area) to playing Walt Disney Concert Hall with LA Phil sounds pretty pompous to me. As it turned out, it was clairvoyance and they have now put out a great album.

The thing is that their music begged to be done with an orchestra. This was probably just a half assed attempt do it with a band thats pretty well known and the indie kids and mainstream audience would think was cool to see. Portishead next year please? If not, Ill take Grizzly Bear or Beirut with the L.A. Phil too.

I totally agree that GB and M83's music was great with an orchestra. But let's not shit on someone else's experience (oh wait, i forget where I'm at...). BUT, it's not a half-assed attempt, it was a sold out show and one of the reasons to do it (from the orchestra's POV) was to expose younger people to classical music, so guess it worked. Would DCFC be my first choice, hell to the no (since i'm not even a DCFC fan..), but it's still a good twist for those that are fans, and it would be interesting to see who'll be for doing it next year.

I absolutely agree on Portishead with Orchestra:thu

Unfortunately, the M83 show was disappointing, and Portishead will never happen.

Yes was amazing last night at the House Of Blues. Steve Howe came on and played all of Asia's set then returned with Yes.
Benoit David killed it as did Oliver Wakeman. It's been 30 years since I last saw Yes play live in San Diego. We've all grown older but the music was just as good as ever. Yeah, what an emotional concert last night...

Here is an acoustic set I filmed by Steve Howe.

Worth $40 definitely. Funny how tickets for these shows are more expensive than the ones in London and Brighton, even after the ghastly exchange rate. Partially because we get worse fees, but also because he and his band and people have to be flown all the way out here ($1000+ for one third class ticket, $6k+ for first class). But yeah, I hear you on the $$. It's stopping me from going to HARD Summer or the Flaming Lips (well, maybe if it weren't at the Greek, I would put more effort into going).

So, hey, all you people saying Grizzly Bear played with the LA Phil, when? At the Disney Concert Hall show I went to, the Phil played before them. No amount of revisionist history will change that. And, it seems pretty pompous that they agreed to do the show after the people who run the concert hall asked them to play. Pretty pompous indeed.

dorkfish is right. that's one of the hardest neighbourhoods for parking. it frequently used to take me up to 40 minutes to find a spot. i'd often end up parking near the fillmore and walking almost a mile. and there's no paid parking lots nearby so even if you are willing to pay, you can't. oh, and then there was the time that I got back to my car and found I was boxed in...

I might buy a ticket for Phoenix @ Rumsey Playfield, Central Park (September) tomorrow. It's $32 through Ticketmaster (so like $900 actually). I really like Phoenix. This hurts the wallet, but I'm going to guess that most shows in NYC will cost this much. Should I go? Passion Pit is going to play too, but I've never heard them.

Also, Happy Mondays is playing Roseland in October, but I probably shouldn't risk that.

I'm not there until August 22. I'm still in El Paso, which means I'm going to have to sell chicle on the U.S.-Mexico bridge, and that's going to take all day. If I smuggle just a little bit of drugs over from Juarez, I'll have the money by tonight.

Anyone have parking tips for the Independent in SF?I actually have never had problems parking down there. I usually get there early and have a few cocktails at a couple of different places in the neighborhood. I've always gotten within 2 blocks of the venue and lots of time on divis on the block...but the key is early and circles... :)

it's fun. it's usually segregated into electro day and indie day. the set up of stages is a little odd, because it's a small space, but it works. if you like most of the acts on one day, it's worth checking out. if you only like Grizzly Bear, it's probably not worth it.

I was at the back of the Palladium for Of Montreal and still had a good view of the stage. The floor is very wide, so it can accommodate quite a few people near the front. And it had really good sound at that show, which is the only one I've seen, and thus the only one I can vouch for.

Right now The Specials have dates outside of the UK in Japan and Austalia. But I think they are only play 2 shows in each of the respective cities. They anounced a big UK tour for the fall though. With each passive day though I am doubting they will come across the ocean for us. And if they do, it will only be for a show or two. (Coachella? I read Paul T has tried to book them on several occasions).

As for Faith No More, I do think chances are good they will make it to North America, but I can't risk it.

The Specials were fun at Glasto, you'll have a blast. Which festival is this?

The Specials are playing at V Fest UK. I am basically going only to watch The Specials. Since this sold out instantly, scalpers can charge whatever they want for this. I am probably going to end up spending upwards up $200 to see them, but it may be only chance so I have too.

Faith No More, Madness, The Prodigy and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are all playing at a festival in Paris called Rock en Seine (http://www.rockenseine.com/2009/line-up.php). This is what began the whole idea of the trip. Faith No More and Madness? How could I not.

As for Montonix, that will be at a solo gig in London the night before I leave for Paris. I also tried to adjust my trip to fit in the FNM gig in Israel with Monotonix and Dinosaur Jr. in there too, but it just was not possible. Oh well. I shouldn't be so greedy.

7.7.09: NEW FINAL NIN DATES!

Getting right to the point, we're going to play a handful of shows in NYC, Chicago and LA starting August 22nd. They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight - it just didn't feel right to end NIN that way. An offer to headline V-Fest in Toronto (being announced soon) set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we'll film these shows, too.

In NYC we'll be playing Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and Terminal 5. In Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom. In LA we'll be at The Wiltern, The Henry Fonda, The Palladium and The Echoplex. These should be cool, unusual and unique shows and I hope you come out - this is it.

So far, The Horrors will be joining us for some shows in NYC, Mew will be with us at other shows in NYC, Chicago and LA, and perhaps more.
Details and ticket info will be announced shortly, so check back.

Thanks,
Trent

Very fucking good Hold Steady show tonight. El Bronx were talented and played well but it just got old after a while. I'd rather listen to some punk. The hold steady sure have a ton of great fans now. I meet a guy with the Stay Positive logo tattooed and he was with a large group who were all stoked about the band. There was another group who had seen them 15-17 times already. Craig Finn still has the most FUN anyone can have on stage and that just brings smiles all around. Most of the set list was from the past 3 albums. I don't recall anything from Almost Killed Me being played. I've still yet to hear them play The Cattle & The Creeping Things which sort of disappointed me. They did however play You Can Make Him Like You which is my favorite song of theirs.

I also ran into TallGuy and Neutral Milk Hotel there and observed with their adventures with a pair of drunken loud women. Good Times.

Just some random shit. There's a Fischerspooner show that just popped up here in Reno on Sept.20th, so I'm guessing some more US dates are going to be announced?..

Yep, Dirty Projectors were absolutely incredible tonight. Easily Top 3 shows of the year for me so far...I've never seen anyone play the guitar quite like Dave does and I really wasn't expecting Brian to go off on drums the way he did, an amazing thing to watch in such a small venue. Met Amber and Angel afterwards, they were really cool. The opening band What's Up was really good too.

Got there around when doors opened and fucking Avey Tare was hanging out outside, chatted with him for a bit and thanked him for rescheduling those January shows and asked about future tour plans and what not. Alas, he declined a photo but whatever. :)

Went to see the Watkins Family Hour at Largo tonight and Fiona Apple did like 3 covers - one of which was an incredible chilling version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene". Ed Helms also came on and did his "Tiger" song from the Hangover and joined in on Banjo on like 4 bluegrass songs! Great unique evening of music.

When is the Palladium's Box Office open? Can you buy other venues Live Nation tickets there with no service charge?

it's open on Saturday mornings from 10am-2pm. You can buy Palladium, Wiltern, Avalon, Verizon, San Manuel tickets there, all with no service charge.

I would think twice about buying tix there this Saturday though, if you check out the Livenation site, this Saturday morning they are doing a $7.11 special (WHOA!). Even after service charges, I can imagine tix being more than $20 each, i'll be picking up my Lykke Li tix that way.

i've been debating for the past few weeks whether or not to go to this. i've seen her five times in the past year, but never in a venue this big (not counting coachella). i wouldn't want to go if it's just the same show she's put on the other times. but i get the feeling she might have a new production if she's playing venues this large. and i think wiltern is the biggest place i would actually pay to see her.

The $7.11 price does NOT include service charges, so it'll endup in the $15-$20 range i'm sure.
