The 1978 series is completely different and vastly superior to the newer stuff. It has Lorne Green in it for goodness sake.

those are both true statements. to which I'd add, the 1978 series was atrociously bad.

The new SciFi channel is a re-imagining of the 70s series. They are otherwise unrelated.

The 2003 miniseries was the kickoff/test balloon for the new series. People liked it so they kept going and created the show which is scheduled to begin it's 4th and final season in March.

Ideally you want to start off with the 2003 miniseries and then move through the rest of the show. Most (if not all) copies of Season 1 of the series will have the miniseries in there with it.

Also, "atrociously bad"? I think you need to sharpen your adverb usage skills. Not that it's wrong, it's just, well, horribly terrible.

i don't think you have to go back to the 78' series and movie to appreciate and love the sci-fi version, but if you got the time, sure. Start with the mini series and borrow and rent away til you catch up. If you do watch the 78 stuff first, you will have a nice connection with an actor that takes on a recurring guest role.

Speaking of connections with the 78 show, anyone dig on "Razor" that aired this past weekend? Made me long for the old school ice tunnel at Universal Studios. i sadly accept this season is the last for Battlestar, but would be most happy if they do some Adama prequel or a few movies.

united - my honest opinion is that you should start with the current version mini series and go from there. Sadly though, I think you may find that the second half of the 3rd season renders the show nearly unwatchable. I barely have any interest in watching the 4th season...if it ever airs.

I actually did voice-over work on Battlestar Galactica 1980 when I was 13 because Robbie Rist's voice was changing (he played Doctor Zee in the first 3 episodes and I overdubbed his voice). That being said I am way more of a fan of the new one.The acting is superb from Olmos and the others.

You know,I never even thought of that.About a year ago,I found the pilot on Demonoid and put it on a DVD and forgot all about it after watching it with my son once.He couldn't tell it was my voice.I had one fairly long scene with Lorne Greene, where I explained everything about the end of the world to him.

Hahahaa,I found it!It's about 3 minutes in.It's weird because when I watched it some of the lines came back to me.Probably because I had to say them like 40 million times with a sound editor, trying to match Robbie Rist's lips and inflections.

The whole experience was kind of a bad one at the time.I initially auditioned for the role a bunch of times and was told I had the part and just needed network approval. So of course I went to school (7th Grade,I believe) and told everyone I was going to be on Battlestar Galactica.Robbie Rist was under a 7 year contract with Universal, and I was told the network wanted to use him instead,so I was crushed and embarassed to have to tell everyone I wasn't going to be on Battlestar Galactica after all.So then a few months later they called me to overdub his dialogue because his voice was changing.I saw the footage with his original voice, and it was pretty funny, like when Bobby's voice changed on Brady Bunch, but if Bobby was supposed to be a scientist on a spaceship. So then I went to school and told everyone I was going to be on Battlestar Galactica after all, without knowing that voice-over work goes uncredited,so I couldn't prove it.All that has of course faded with time, and occasionally I still get checks for like 10 bucks for Battlestar Galactica:Galactica Discovers Earth from Universal.

This is one of the best things that I have heard in a long time on this board. Trying to prove to the other kids it was your voice... hahahahaha I bet you caught so much shit. Fucking kids. How much did you originally get paid?

breakjaw
11-28-2007, 09:19 AM
It was 1 day and I believe it was around $350.I have since gotten about 10 checks in the neighborhood of around $10-$20 each from them. This was the only voice-over work I ever did, although I came real close to doing the voice of Richie Rich in the cartoon.I turned it down to do a TV movie of the week so I could get my SAG card.

This fall we're going to get a 2-hour movie called The Plan, directed by Edward James Olmos. Basically, it's BSG entirely from the perspective of the Cylons. It's gonna be sweet. :thu

Just watch the re-imaging (or whatever its called) by sci-fi, don't worry about the 70s version.

BSG is in my top five tv series, I found it thoroughly entertaining and very quality. I always avoided it because it simply seemed too geek for even me, but then once I started, hooked.
My girlfriend wanted to give it a ago, so we are now about halfway through the whole series, we are close to the final 5 being revealed.
It can be confusing as all, I often have to read wiki's on my phone while we are watching so that when the great revelation comes I can answer my girlfriend's questions once she inevitably will start to ask. Basically, the hows and the whys of the final 5.

So I just finished this show. Really enjoyed it. What the fuck was with that Starbuck bullshit though? Was it really necessary for her to die and come back? I would have accepted that she was an angel without that happening. Also, the harbinger of death stuff? None of that happened, in fact she was the opposite of that.

koryp
04-30-2013, 01:02 AM
The gods! That whole final 5, this has all happened before shit, and the wrap up in general made this one of the weirdest series I've gotten through. There were times I had to go back over a few episodes to make sense of the whole arc. I thought they had written in the whole death of Kara Thrace shit just to have the bones in a viper scene. In the end it really was just part of the weird factor. Have you watched Caprica yet?

kreutz2112
04-30-2013, 01:13 AM
Yeah, but even her finding her bones had nothing to do with anything. I mean I guess dying, finding that planet and then coming back to life made her go crazy and provided some character development, which took up like 6 episodes, but it wasn't even earth that she "found". It was just some random planet that had some sort of other independently evolved species of cylon (that was never mentioned again). This is in no way a knock on the show, I loved it. Just something that left me scratching my head. I haven't watched Caprica yet, but it's next on my list. I literally finished Battlestar like an hour ago.

koryp
04-30-2013, 01:26 AM
There's another's miniseries called Razor about the Pegasus and that crazy lady admiral from season 3. It ties up some backstory about that whole craziness. You might enjoy it. As far as the final arc though, none of the other series really clear it up, but Caprica gives a little more of the story.

iv3rdawG
04-30-2013, 08:50 AM
Razor is meant to be watched after season 3 and before season 4, for anyone who hasn't gone through the series yet.

I believe the whole harbinger of death stuff was more from the perspective of the cylons. Speaking of angels, I watched through the series a 2nd time, and I was shocked at how early in the series that the Caprica 5 angel (that was her name, right?) straight up reveals who/what she is. I just found it funny that she says "I am an angel of God" (or something along those literal lines) and I had spent the whole damn rest of the series originally trying to figure out what the fuck she was.
During the 2nd time through the series, when I heard her say that I felt like an idiot.

xanman86
04-30-2013, 10:18 AM
I saw it as she was the "harbinger of death" for the old society (The 12 colonies and the cylons) by bringing them to Earth to start a new colony that becomes the world we live in after cylons and humans and the natives of Earth mated with each other. It was always her destiny to die and be resurrected to direct the fleet to Earth (which is why she was always drawing the nebula she died in her whole life).

Cara's swan song is the episode near the end where she plays piano with her dead father ("Someone to Watch Over Me), it explains everything through subtext. After that she gets no exposition as to what she is in the finale because it is all in this episode.

http://www.battlestarlocations.com/uploads/8/1/0/8/8108293/1906222_orig.jpg

As to her being the "harbinger of death" being the opposite of what you thought it would mean...well that happens on TV all the time. A good example is the Shanshu Prophecy in Angel.
