Statistically speaking, if you're going to be murdered, chances are it's going to be by a member of your family on Christmas day.

If you're lucky enough not to wake up dead, dismembered, and draped with tinsel, those of you with loved ones might have a few gifts to give. And let's be honest here. Nobody wants a fruitcake. Unless Alma made it, but she's got better things to do than to make fruitcake for you people.

So here is a thread where you can ask other people for help with gifts. Or holiday things in general. Or you can complain about all TV commercials having that same goddamn jingle bell backing track. I don't really care. As soon as I hit submit new thread, this is out of my hands.

Ready? Go.

I start early as well. I make a good portion of my gifts, and that takes time. And it's not so much of a financial impact if you spread it out a bit.

Just because it's not christmas time yet doesn't mean it's not prime plotting time. It's around now that folks are getting their names for secret santa (at work) and my family has passed out names for our own secret santa (it's like pretending to be strangers).

This year's the first time we've done this, and I got my only boy cousin. The problem is that he's 17 and ... a boy. And also 17. And lives in Illinois as a hobby, I think. So what do you get for a 17 yr old boy for under $30?

How about a pair of tickets to a show you think he'd like at an all-ages venue? Something not too high-profile, so the pair would be affordable.

11-12-2007, 10:08 PM
As much as I'm sure he'd enjoy that, I don't know how I'd feel about giving him those things in front of the whole family. And anyway, how do you keep 3 hookers alive in a box without punching holes in it? The holes would give it away immediately.

Thanksgiving was last month... you're all crazy.

I have already picked out my present for my girlfriend this year. I have set the bar high for myself, not to brag, so I was kind of worried about this year. But I know now. She will like it. I would say what it is... but she might be lurking this board...

These are the gifts I am thinking of so far:

dad: noise-canceling headphones for his frequent business travel, which he has said he wants
mom: french press, which she has said she wants
sister: pre-loaded mp3 player for the gym

I'm not sure about my grandmother. Friends are easy, they're all set. But I have no idea about the grandmother.

Those are really good ideas. Tell us some more about your grandmother and maybe the internet will come up with something.

So far, the things I'm for sure on are:

Mom: Pin-tucked flannel nightgown from LL Bean that she's been wanting for years, a few silver bracelets that I have yet to make, some nice bath/body stuff that she's not self-indulgent enough to buy for herself.

Stepdad: I ordered these little pins that will snap into the back of his golf clubs that have been engraved with his name and phone number in case he loses one. I ordered them last month, because it said they take a month and a half to arrive. I received them two days later.

Grandma: I'm going to make an amber necklace for her similar to the one that we saw at the Hillman Hall in Pgh.

Grandpa: Astronomy book. We all got him a telescope a few years ago for his birthday and he loves it but I'm not entirely sure he knows how to use it.

Aunt and uncle: I have no clue.

Six year old cousin: I'm going to start a charm bracelet for her, with some sweet little silver charms. I'll include one with every present I get her for the next few years, probably.

I also need to come up with some nice house gifts for my stepdad's parents and my great-grandparents. Friends are the easiest, I'll just find something awesome or make jewelry.

I told my mom if she sees something she really wants at about a hundred dollars to buy it because she always asks for the same three things, slippers, a purse and that white diamonds perfume. So i guess she's up late one night drinking and decides it'd be a great idea to order herself like 90 dollars worth of light up plastic grapes bunches. I don't give a fuck at least i don't have to go looking for slippers a purse and white diamonds now.

Thanks. You have good gift ideas too. Hmm things about my grandmother? She's 90. She lives in a retirement community near Washington, DC. She used to live on a farm in Vermont. She reads supermarket mystery novels and recently she had some eye surgery so she reads large print books now. She had a cat which recently died. She has been married three times and has outlasted all of them. She is now dating some man who also lives in the retirement community. She is on some social planning committee there. She worked as a Red Cross nurse during WW2, which I'm fairly certain was basically a classy way of saying she a government-hired escort for the troops during their R&R time. She likes self-tanner. She is an eternal optimist. She likes pedicures.

OH YES WIN THANK YOU HANNAH. I think I want to get her a gift certificate for a fancy pedicure.

All I want for Christmas is a really long, boring thread about Radiohead's new album. That's all I want, nothing more, nothing less...

Actually I want more...

I want 12,000 posts on that fucker. I want a tenth of a second, note-by-note breakdown of the whole shindig including the pauses between tracks. I want to know every single misguided lyrical interpretation of every song and I certainly want to know how life altering it is. I want to know what color of shirt, scarve, knickers, sneakers and socks Thom and Johnny-Boy were wearing during each take of each song. Boxers or Briefs? Doublemint or Juicy Fruit (or God Forbid they chew Bubble Tape)? I want to know what Thom's testicles look like after they are pierced with an ice pick. I want each of you to personally fly to Austin and sing Christmas Carols at my doorstep to the tune of the entire "In rainbows" album from start to finish, on repeat, for no less than 121 hours (and no humming... You come with your A-game and if that means clothespins on your nose for full nasal effect, then bring it). I want Thom and Bjork to fuck like Zimbabwean Sun chasers on DMT and I think it should be broadcast on Fox News for the next year, after which we get a reality TV show focusing on the spawn spending its life flitting around like a little woodland tree spirit. I want Ty Webb's real address. I want Don King to stage a goddamn fight between a pussy ass silverback and any run of the mill grizzly (no weapons, neutral setting of course) and settle this mess once and for all. I want all the little hoo's down in hoo-ville to cry themselves a river, then drown in it before that damn Horton comes snooping around. I want someone to come into a school, fully armed and preparing to throw down, and get sucker punched by a 65 pound girl with headgear and a trig book nestled under her armpit before he gets a shot off. I want her to stand defiantly over his slooped body and drive an awkward heal into his ocular cavity. And of course, I would like my rug back... It really tied the room together.

I want to get something for Hannah for starting this thread, as it will almost certainly save me from having to put any effort into finding things to give my family for Christmas. Score No. 1 is the Twirl-A-Squirrel. Thank you, Dani. Thank you so much. My mother will laugh so hard she'll wet herself. Do you really need a maid? So here's something I do to make Christmas a little less about corporate head honchos making money off of me and a little more Hey Look What I Can Do When I'm Poor: I make my own ornaments, using plain glass ornaments and then adding my own color via acrylic paints.

I'm putting them in there because I also sometimes give them as gifts to folks because they are both fun and simple. Basically all you need to do is add your desired colors to the glass ornaments, shake or swirl as desired, and tip over in a paper cup to drain the extra paint and to dry. Sometimes if there's enough, you can pour the leftover paint into another ornament and get more life out of your paints. Doesn't work every time, though. Anyway. Here are some of my favorites from last year.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/bluewaves1.jpg

This picture doesn't really do the ornament justice, but you get the jist. it's blue and white and I always imagine it looks like waves.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/bluewaves_fromabove.jpg
This is the view from above. Somehow the perspective makes it look like the ornament is full, but it really isn't.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/candycane1.jpg
This one is like candy cane colors.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/candycane2.jpg http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/candycane3.jpg

Two more views.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/red_solid.jpg

Also, as demonstrated above, you don't have to use multiple colors. This one is red metalic paint (clearly) in a glass ornament with a special finish. Technically these weren't meant for painting, but they look so amazing painted so I did it anyway.

http://www.thefunkylama.com/images/lama/splotchy.jpg

This is one using red, green, and gold metallic paint. Just because of the nature of the paint, it didn't stick to the entire surface of the glass inside, so splotches formed. It actually looks really cool in person.

Anyway. There 'tis.

Lama, those are the shit. Do you have to get special acrylics or will any old acrylics work? For instance, for the first one (the waves), what type/brand of acrylics did you use?

Also, follow up question here, how could one go about imprinting the "In Rainbows" album cover on the inside of the glass? Not that I'd spend 72 hours making sure to get every pixel correct or anything, but I mean, if , say, Randy was going to make me one for Christmas, how could it be done?

NOTE TO RANDY: If you could also have Thom Yorke sing into a bottle and then cap that fucker really quickly, I promise to let the remnants of his voice settle for no less than a decade before opening. Hell, as a bonus, you could just bottle up Thom Yorke! Get on it, Randy. Time's a tickin'.

In all seriousness Alma, those are cool. Mrs. Nothingman and myself are going to attempt some this Christmas. Should the acrylics be thinned with H2O or anything?

Then those are some kick-ass pajamas.

Edit: also, as for the acrylics, use what you have. I just buy whatever the store I'm in happens to be selling. It helps if it says on the bottle that it's good for glass, but it's been a year since I made these so I don't remember what brand I use.

oh one more thing. For the illegitimate child-planet blue swirly one, I used leftovers from another ornament that was just blue and pearl white, and then swirled it around. Part of what made the super-cool effect was the fact that I didn't have a lot to work with and it didn't take very long to dry. If I think of anything else after class gets out, I'll add it here. To the thread, I mean, not this post.

Look Zach, you cock-stomping Texas queerbait, if you don't appreciate that album you've been doing the wrong drugs. Also, your eastern european connection never came through. Boo to you on two counts, sir.

11-17-2007, 09:56 PM

Anyway. There 'tis.

VERY COOL!
Absolutely love these!
On friday we were brainstorming on xmas gifts for our students to make as gifts. Where can i find plain glass ornaments? Crafts store? I have never seen plain glass ornaments before.

thefunkylama
11-17-2007, 10:08 PM
You can get them at Michael's, or other art supply stores. Look for them to be coming out right about this time of year.

thefunkylama
11-17-2007, 10:36 PM
Also, something else I forgot to mention. You can get different sizes and shapes of glass ornaments. So, if you only have a tiny table-top tree, you should be able to find small shapes like hearts and squares or flat ones; or if you need really big fat huge ornaments, they have great round ones. They're out there.

Look Zach, you cock-stomping Texas queerbait, if you don't appreciate that album you've been doing the wrong drugs. Also, your eastern european connection never came through. Boo to you on two counts, sir.

randall,
For the record, I like "In Rainbows" (even ordered the way too expensive boxed set so I could get the vinyl). I just knew better than to come around these boards reading 83 pages of cumguzzling knob sloppage. I'd say "In Rainbows" cracks my yearly top-10 but certainly not top-3. On this board, you'd think something akin to "The Velvet Underground & Nico" or "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" was just discovered... It's good, but not transcendent... Maybe the 4th best album from Radiohead (certainly not any better than the 3rd best), and while it's better than 90% of the drivel that is shoved down our collective throats, it doesn't deserve a "song-by-song, listen-by-listen" breakdown. When Arcade Fire release their 2009 album and we hit triple digit pages in one thread, I'll know the apocalypse is not only real but impending.

As for the hookup, I find that hard to believe. You're the only person I know that didn't get their needs met. Now, let's discuss this issue in PM only from now on. I'll email him and see what he says.

P.S. Being the Christmas gift thread and all, if anyone living in the AZ desert can snag Randy a fucking peyote button, I'm pretty sure you'd make his Christmas. Just put a bow on that fucker, mail it in a perishable item freezer type deal to ensure maximum freshness, and then it's a fucking very merry Christmas indeed.

OK, so back to Christmas stuff...

I used to know a kid who had all the really awesome Lego models. Airport. Police Station. Space Shuttle. Pirate Ship. He never played with 'em. Just built them and left them on the shelf. It killed me.

Still though, he's in prison now so I guess there's that.

Husband sticks to the Star Wars stuff. As long as the final display place is in the computer room, he can buy and build as many sets as he wants. I'm sure we will eventually have to purchase shelving for this purpose. I don't get it, but I suppose I wouldn't. With the vagina and all.

I'm not much of a gift person. I send out a lot of cards. (If any of you want one, PM me your address.) We only buy gifts for the parents and my grandma. Andy and I buy random crap all year...no reason to do presents for each other.

I sound like Eeyore. I love the holidays...I just prefer to keep them as stress-free as possible. :p

My sister and I played the hell out of our legos...we had tons of sets (train set, space shuttle, monster trucks etc) and we would build all sorts of shit, leave it for a few days, then tear it all down. One time we even had our own lego Olympics and we built all these different courses for track and field, diving, equestrian etc.....then eventually, someone bought me a bubble gum maker thing for a gift, and the corn syrup somehow got dumped into one of our buckets of legos and they never recovered.

This is definitely a new idea:

Funeral home tries to cater to gay funerals with erotic caskets

Published: 15 Nov 10 09:24 CET

A Cologne funeral home is hoping to draw in gay clientele by offering erotic caskets with nude renaissance imagery or rainbow-coloured urns, along with other tailored services for homosexuals and their mourners.

A casket featuring the figures of muscular young men in athletic poses has been in the display case at Königsfeld & Brandl for the last three weeks.

The operators of the funeral home Thomas Brandl, 32, and Michael Königsfeld, 34, are themselves are a couple and aim to cater to both gays and lesbians in addition to straight customers.

Their ad reads: “Those who want a warmer, somewhat more fantastical departure, will find us to be a sensitive partner.”

They put gay customers in contact with special speakers and religious leaders for funeral services, organise natural burials in places where only other gays or lesbians have been laid to rest, arrange for graveside champagne toasts and colourful balloon decorations.

“There is also a casket in rainbow colours, but I think it looks awful,” Brandl says.

The mortician couple hopes tap into the community needs in the Rhineland city, one of Germany’s centres of gay culture where every tenth resident is estimated to be gay.

“Naturally there were people who threw their hands up in horror in front of the display window,” said Königsfeld.

But most passers-by are delighted by what they call their “gay caskets,” including women of a certain age, he added.

“We had a widow in the office whose husband we buried and she was quite taken with the firm young men on the casket,” he said.

In particular, women between the ages of 60 and 80 seem particularly open to the model, he said.

But one rival undertaker has called the caskets “borderline,” while another said he wasn’t sure such a casket provided a dignified burial.

Still Brandl and Königsfeld believe they are on the right track.

“It’s not easy for gays and lesbians to tell an undertaker that they must bury their life partner,” they said together in an advertisement. “In this most difficult of situations it is easier for them to have a contact person who understands them.”

So I asked Nick what he would like for Christmas, he said he wants clippers for this face. He doesn't like to clean shave very often but needs some sort of clipper to trim down his scruff. I am guessing this isn't like an electric razor... Where should I go to buy this? Any suggestion on brand/style/price range would be appreciated.

I need ideas for gifts for my parents and my fiancee's parents.

As most of you know, I am getting married next year. My mom is a very sentimental person and the past few weeks she has been "Last Christimas with my son at home" *waterworks* kind of deal. My fiancee's dad is the same kind of way with her. So, we want to get them a gift that says "Yes, we are leaving your guys' home, but we aren't leaving you."

We had the idea of putting together a photo album/scrapbook kind of thing through Kodak online. We upload the pics, create the book online and they mail it to us. But the deadline for that was two days ago... so there goes that idea.

This is where I need your guys' help. Have any ideas?

Staples has ornaments that you can upload 100 pictures to, and it runs a slide show for 15-30 minutes, depending on how long you set it.
They're on sale for $10. I got one for my mom and uploaded a couple dozen xmas pics of myself.

Also has great potential as a Pornament for friends.
