I have seen all headliners in full since 2004, except only most of depeche mode and one rhcp song. Was not there for the cure.

Headliner Full-Sets I have seen:
2002: Bjork and Oasis
2003: Beastie Boys
2004: Radiohead
2005: Coldplay and NIN
2006: Tool
2007: Bjork and RATM

I probably should add partial sets too:
2004: The Cure
2006: Depeche Mode
Both times I was just to tired and either left early or went get get some food..
I ignored RCHP both times they headlined...
and barely saw anything of Jane's Addiction in 2001..

I have seen all but RHCP in 2007 like 4 songs total and DM for their last 2 songs for full sets, not too shabby.

I saw all of Radiohead and the Cure in 04 (The Cure from onstage, no less)
I watched all of Coldplay and most of Nine Inch Nails (After British Sea Power and Wolf Eyes both ended)
in 06, I saw most of Tool
in 07, I saw all of Bjork from close and most of Rage.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the new RHCP, but I thought they were good at Coachella. They played some good jams while I was watching them. I think they played some new crap too, but they did some improvised stuff that was pretty awesome.

Just sayin'. I mean, I agree they are a weakish headliner, but they weren't bad last year.

Though I did leave early for Gotan Project... That night got better and better for me.

Red Hot Chili Peppers were cool, Gotan Project was amazing, The Good The Bad & The Queen was godly.

TGTBTQ were one of my favorite acts that year. Seeing that many incredible musicians play together was pretty unreal.

I remember Albarn made a funny Tiesto joke, which was rad...

The delay and the sound problems during The GBQ kinda messed up the flow I think.

I would be so down for NIN.

He called it the loudest Ice Cream truck music he'd ever heard...

I was laughing so hard when he said that. The most entertaining part of TGTBATQ was watching Paul Simonon. They sounded really good, but I onlt stayed for about 4 songs, because I was tired as hell. Paul Simonon kept a smile on my facethe whole time.

Oh, and I just read on the Coachella facebook page that Monday at 5pm this radio station (http://www.ibero909radio.com/joomla/) will be unveiling the line up.
I cant read spanish, so I can't find anything that would suggest that they will be releasing the line up, Monday light none the less... but I figured I would pass it along.

This is exactly what I did, and I couldn't have been happier. Saturday was the night I felt best about my choices for the last three shows. Being front-and-center for Gotan and TGTBTQ was unreal.

Paul Simonon is such a cool guy. I liked how he would put his cigarette in between the strings at the head of his bass while he was playing, and then he'd take a swig off whatever was on the piano. It was a nice looking bottle. And he'd hold his bass like it was a gun or something.

There's still at least one headliner we're all clueless about. And I know for sure that all three must be really fucking big. Don't rule my acid vision out quite yet.

Dani, don't you rule it out either.

Besides, I'm still saying that those Plant and Krauss dates are interpretable as supporting my theory--they're booked to play Bonnaroo, but they're coming to the US to play a handful of shows in April, then flying back to the Europe for May-June, then coming back for Bonnaroo? Naw, son. Plant's tuning up his voice with those gigs, the rest of the boys will meet him in Indio, and at the end of the summer the world tour starts.

If for some miraculous reason GV actually got Floyd to do a one off show, or any number of shows for that matter, I would have to break an oath to myself of never doing acid again, and indeed, dropping two more tabs, or drops :)

yeah, I bet the farm on TGTBATQ because of the Blur cred and the ex-clash/ verve contributions... I chose them over the Black Keys and was thrilled to have done so. I caught the Chile Peppers set from the wheel chair platorm in 2003 so I didn't worry about missing them.

It was 2nd best highlight from 2007. I was about 5 rows deep on the right side of the stage. I sat through the entire Gotan Project nightmare to be close. Seriously, the should have P.A warnings before a band like plays. ;-)

Yeah, really. That would fucking suck. It's bad enough we didn't get to see BSS with Emily Haines in 2006, when Metric played, but the IRL pop-up ad fest, aka Lollapalooza, got them. Seeing that other girl doing songs like "7/4" and "Anthems" would be a bad cover version. Well, not bad. Decent, possibly good. Just not amazing.

Portishead isn't something I'd personally choose as a headliner, but it's a million times better than No Doubt.

If that URB thing is true, I want to say I called it.

Splitting the festivals where one gets a cool thing and the other gets a cool thing, instead of putting them all into one awesome basket.

We got Portishead as a headliner but they got Radiohead as a headliner. Portishead would have been so cool opening up for Radiohead.

I have no problem with these but I think Spiritualized will not be billed way up as you think they will be in the poster.

That's true. I guess it depends when they play. I mean, I never thought of Portishead as a headliner, so who knows where Spiritualized will be if they play that day. I hope they give Spiritualized the spot before Portishead, or at least the sunset spot. For sure they need to be on the Coachella Stage though, because they have a lot of stuff when they perform. That's me hoping they bring all their stuff to Coachella though.

My Morning Jacket, Rilo Kiley, the Raconteurs and the Verve will be announced later today as a few of the big names for this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, but unless promoter Paul Tollett and gang have some aces up their sleeves, the ninth installment of the desert blowout is shaping up to be the most ho-hum in its illustrious history.

Rilokiley I mean, Jack Johnson?

Yes, there will be a couple bigger names (see Geoff Boucher's story in today's Times here, and please watch this space later today), but some of the focus at today's news conference in Mexico City will revolve around a planned three-day festival in Jersey City, N.J., in August. Tollett's Goldenvoice and partners AEG Live are behind that one too, and Radiohead and Johnson have been reported as headliners for that.

But barring surprises (and there have been some in the past), Radiohead and the likes of My Bloody Valentine and David Bowie -- the latter two of which were hot names on the rumor mill -- will not be making the trek to Indio for the April 25-27 festival.

Besides MMJ -- admittedly a dynamic force live -- the lineup will include one veteran act, and perhaps another marquee name or two. No Doubt's name is still hot on the rumor mill (can't confirm that as of now, sorry), and so is Portishead's. And last week I posted a list of several smaller bands (two or three of which I got erroneous information on) who will play the festival.

More later.

that's what i was thinking but i doubt it. if lou reed was there i would desperately want a reed/bowie performance, and that doesn't look like it's gonna happen. stevie wonder would be awesome as well. it's funny how "ho-hum" is used to describe any of the years. if the headliners aren't mindblowing the less known acts are. sure, 2005 wasn't the most mindblowing coachella i've been to but i saw some amazing acts that year, just like any other. if this year is "ho-hum" that's fine by me.

Portishead Set for Coachella 2008
January 21, 2008

The seminal Brit outfit will play its U.S. first gig in over ten years alongside the Breeders, MMJ, and Rilo Kiley among others, this April.

Though it appears My Bloody Valentine won't be taking a vacation under the California sun, another equally pasty outfit from across the pond will: Portishead has been announced as one of the headliners for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, slated to hit the hot desert plains of Indio, CA's Empire Polo Field April 25-27. For the band, which has logged its reformation and progress towards a new record via a blog, the Coachella gig will be its first in the U.S. in over ten years.

Also, according to Billboard.com, it appears The Los Angeles Times' speculation is true: the Breeders, My Morning Jacket, and the Verve will also top the bill. But there's more: the Raconteurs, Jack Johnson, and Spin cover subjects Rilo Kiley will also show for the festival. More details and performing acts are expected to be announced in the near future.

Now enjoy the music, just be prepared for the possible earthquake.
Aw weak...Oh well...It is what it is...

i think volta's audience is a little to niche to headline. if interpol has to sub-headline, i don't think there's any reason that tmv should headline. that noted i freaking love them and think there's a good chance for them to be at coachella. and others have said so as well.

Waaaah. Eat a dick, Tom.

edit: Oh why Tom? Because I dont have the same lame musical tastes as you? Or is it because I'm not as cool as you on an internet message board?

no. you don't like Prince, that's your right. more power to you.

you're a fucking idiot because you assume that just because other people do admire Prince's work, it must be "groupthink". you have no idea why i like Prince, how long I've liked Prince, or what influence (or not) others may have had. and you don't know why anyone else likes prince either. in other words you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Not one shred of knowledge, not one iota of fact to substantiate your position. So in your attempt to be a condescending prick, you really come off like a desperate fucktard reaching for a coolness that you'll never come close to attending.

I'll be so angry if that Mexican conference announces:

"Blah blah El Coachella blah blah artistas blah blah The Verve, The Breeders, Death Cab for Cutie, Portishead blah blah everything we already know."

Coachella 2008 might not rock, but it will roll.

While the roster for the ninth edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival feels a little light on straight-ahead guitar music, there's enough heavy-hitting dance talent -- starting with imports M.I.A. and Justice -- to light the night skies over Indio.

M.I.A., the London-born singer whose album "Kala" earned critics' plaudits worldwide in 2007, earned kudos as a festival performer with energetic performances at last year's Lollapalooza and Siren festivals. The French duo Justice played two recent DJ sets in Los Angeles, a middling show at the Detour Festival and a wildly received performance at the Hard NYE festival in downtown L.A.

Here's a partial roster as it is being announced in Mexico City this afternoon:

Roger Waters
The Verve
Portishead
The Raconteurs
My Morning Jacket
Rilo Kiley
Jack Johnson
Death Cab for Cutie
Kraftwerk
Justice
M.I.A.
Love & Rockets

More to come

if this is it... it'll be easy to say no to coachella this year. kraftwerk is the only band on the list I might not get a chance to see this year. but last time they came up here to seattle...

I'm thinking that this Roger Waters thing is going to be phenomenal. Jack Johnson is alright I guess. Potishead will be cool. Stars, Metric, Spiritualized and Mum are huge pulls for me though. Huge! I am happy with this.

so, i listened in on the conference and i must say, after 5 yrs of going to coachella, this is the first time i'm ambivalent 'bout the lineup. every year, i look forward most to watching the non-headlining bands but this time round, the sweet spots are few.
