Cool, now can we get Andrew's fun mix Volume 7 posted here? I tried to dl on the old board, but it said that the sender had exceeded his upload limit (or something to that effect).

And might as well post the "Cassini" mix here as well. The link should still be good.

I think all the old mixes should be reposted. every single one.

i dont get this thread, is it only mixes that you made get put up? what about albums etc?

TomAz
01-18-2007, 03:32 PM
yes. only mixes. i think the idea is to introduce people to new music, not to allow people to avoid buying music.

mountmccabe
01-18-2007, 03:32 PM
This should only be for personal mixes or individual mp3s.

It would probably be best to not upload and post full length albums. Yes, they are shared elsewhere but it might be best to not attract that sort of attention.

mountmccabe
01-18-2007, 03:56 PM
Example of a good use of this thread:

M. Ward with Jim James - Magic Trick (live) (http://download.yousendit.com/091EA8273F7A1D51)

keriann

nothingman00
01-18-2007, 11:36 PM
While I agree with the overall premise, I think there are certain out of print albums which could be posted here. Example would be Hardkiss "Delusions of Grandeur" which is selling at $60+ on Amazon for used copies. I own it and would feel no shame at all in uploading it to this thread. That price is preposterous and maybe people who hear it will buy albums from some of the artists showcased (rabbit in The Moon for one). Plus, someone hooked me up with the "Strange Geometry" album by The Clientele (EDIT: on the old thread) and I liked it so much that I purchased their entire catalogue. Just sayin'.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I don't have iTunes on my computer so Im not sure how the files will come up there. I edited the filenames and the id3 tags (v1 and v2) to have the track number for the order I put together. But, well, the songs still work regardless of order.

Also, just a note: those were my favorite artists or anything. I don't, for example, like the Fratellis but that doesn't mean folks shouldn't listen to see.

Breakjaw - Got it. Reset my computer and now I'm getting the code. Thanks man. I appreciate the mix and the willingness to help out.

I'm working on my own mix that will definitely add some new flavor (Circa Survive, Ozomatli, Pharoahe Monch, etc.). My time is limited these days, but it'll be up here eventually.

By the way, I think its aboslutely amazing how many cool people are here and willing to hook shit up for others. Very cool. This is the main thing that convinced me to make the trip out from Philly by myself last year for my first Coachella. I'm going out again with 15-20 others for my bachelor party this year.

If you want to be real fancy-like you make a picture a link to that download page.

Breakjaw if you have time will you re-up your 3rd one because it says the download slots are exhausted or somesuch thing when I click it.

Kreutz2112,
At yousendit anymore you have to sign up for a free account before you can upload files of a certain size. Once you do that just click on browse, find the zipped file and put in your email address as the "to" and the "from" when it's finished post the link. You don't have to sign up for a free account at megaupload or bigupload though so I think they're kindof better.

In turns out that for my sins I actually included a song on my Coachella Mix that Yablo put on an old board mix. I mean that's not where I got the file but still damn. I feel awful.

It's a good song... though I don't know if that makes things better or worse.

Andrew's Fun Corner, Vol. 9

Breakjaw did a really good job with the Coachella mixes, so I decided not to do a mix for each day and instead do a combination of Coachella acts and bands who I want to play Coachella at some point (and some random stuff I wanted to share).

Breakjaw - what program do you use to make your mixes?

Bands I have discovered I quite like thanks to these recent Coachella-centric mixes:

Ratatat
Mike Relm
The Fratellis
Anathello

Still listening though.

Also, I was already familiar with 80% of the bands, so this isn't to say I only liked four bands. These are new personal revelations.

Nice!I'm downloading Ass-Shaker as we speak and listening to Yablo's Coachella mix on headphones(It's 3AM and my night off,but I work nights and it's hard to adjust to real life).
"Me'n'Paul" is a real good choice for a Willie song.I hate to say it,but I put "The Maker" on my mix just because it's a Daniel Lanois cover.I mean it's good, but it's not Willie in the way "Me'n'Paul is.Perfect following it with the ELO cover.Fuck every single Fountains of Wayne hater, thank you for fighting the good fight,Yab.
I mean a band can't help having one song just explode.Just ask Crowded House.Or Dada.

I also made 2 more that progress in levels of......not sure what word to use......depth? Basically, if you like the 1st mix, then try the 2nd, and if that one is pleasing try the 3rd. I guess you could say they get less listener friendly. You gotta want mix 3 to enjoy it. Anyway. Be on the lookout. They are coming soon.

The band which I am most looking forward to at this year's Coachella is the Jesus and Mary Chain. They have been one of my favorite band for a good dozen years and I have never seen them live.

They have an excellent compilation, 21 Singles. The following is 21 more songs. I'm actually not certain that none of them have been released as singles. but they are wonderful and amazing; I personally don't consider this a step down in quality from the stuff on the other comp.

It is just under 70 minutes long, the files are mp3s. Also due to the file names and the tags they should play in my suggested sequence. If you are York, however, the songlist is after the image/link.

Thanks Tom and Bug!

I'm curious why you left off "Cities" though...
I just typed a long-winded explanation and hit submit reply and lost my connection before it worked so I'll explain faster:
I had the live version of "Cities" from "Name of This Band Is..." on there right up to the end,and cut it because I had a few songs from "Name of This Band..." already and I didn't put the "Fear Of Music" on there, because I think most people already have "Fear of Music"(I do on LP and CD) and I've had it on lots of other mix tapes and stuff and wanted a different one("Air") on this one.Ditto with "Electric Guitar" and "Life During Wartime".
I agree,it's one of my favorites by them, and painful to leave off.

I downloaded 21 Non-Singles and can't wait to listen to it.Particularly "Taste Of Cindy" which I haven't heard in a long time!

this is a tribute CD to Roky Erikson from 1990. It's pretty cool. tracks 2, 12, 14, and 15 are personal faves. Track 19 is the only example (that I am aware of) of one Coachella artist covering another Coachella artist from the same year.

1. Reverberation (doubt) - ZZ Top
2. If You Have Ghosts - John Wesley Harding and the Good Liars
3. I Had to Tell You - Poi Dog Pondering
4. She Lives (in a time of her own) - Judybats
5. Slip Inside This House - Primal Scream
6. You Don't Love Me Yet - Bongwater
7. I Have Always Been Here Before - Julian Cope
8. You're Gonna Miss Me - Doug Sahm & Sons
9. It's a Cold Night for Alligators - Southern Pacific
10. Fire Engine - Richard Lloyd
11. Bermuda - Vibrating Egg
12. I Walked With a Zombie - REM
13. Earthquake - Butthole Surfers
14. Don't Slander Me - Lou Ann Barton
15. Red Temple Prayer (two headed dog) - Double Sister Happiness
16. Burn the Flames - Thin White Rope
17. Postures (leave your body behind) - Chris Thomas featuring Tabby Thomas
18. Nothing in Return - T-Bone Burnett
19. Reverberation (doubt) - The Jesus and Mary Chain

EDIT
And thanks for posting this mix!
My favorite Roky Erickson cover is The Minutemen where Mike Watt sings Bermuda over a telephone! (The Minutemen were lo-fi before lo-fi was cool)

Anyone know if there are enough covers and/or cameos to make a full mix. I know of at least a few collabs from the artists this year:

Ghostface feat. Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good
Grizzly Bear - The Knife (Girl Talk remix)
Peeping Tom feat. Dan the Automator & Rahzel (sort of part of the Roots) - Mojo

There must be others that I can't think of or don't know.

I held off on posting this because I had it halfway mixed when John(McCabe)put out the excellent 21 Non Singles JAMC mix.
Our two mixes only have about 4 songs in common and they aren't all the same versions,so I figured it was ok to put it up now. Also the first time I d'led this I got 2 corrupt files(Reverence and April Skies),so I tried again and it was perfect,so I'm leaving it as it is.

Tom - do you have the double disc set called "Prodigal Son"? If not, I'd be happy to supply it to you. It's got a ton of his old shit, some of which appeared on "Tracks" (or whatever that thing was called). Some of it's good some of it's kinda crappy. He was trying to hard to write lyrics like Dylan in his younger days.

Are all of those live versions from the Live set? I have all of Springsteen's albums (except his most recent). I used to worship him to ridiculous extremes. Not that I don't still love him. He was a gateway drug into Dylan for me. So, gotta give him credit for that.

TomAz

Lost in the Flood is off the Live at the Hammersmith '75 CD. the others are off the Live 75-85 disks.

I have found over the years the earlier Springsteen stuff (1st 3 albums) has aged better than Born In The USA or anything after that. IMO.

I don't have Prodigal Son, no, and yes I'd like to hear it.

Touch It mix is great!(love the Daft Punk mixed in,btw)What's unfinished?

thanks. the touchit remix is unfinished because it's mainly just an 8 bar loop at the moment. Busta's vocals were difficult to warp into a steady rhythm because he inserts extra syllables and goes in and out of triplets, screwing up ableton's automatic warping algorithm. I spent far too long tweaking those and not enough arranging the beat itself. Basically it's still in the early stages.

oh and also I can't take credit for the techonologic sample. That was in Busta's original, it's part of the acapella track that I used.

That's over my head, except for the part about Busta going in and out of triplets...
I liked the Sporkmix 6 alot,though!

Yeah...I was listening to it today on the way home from work...bumpin' it...nice work.

PS - Do you know if Ableton Live 5.2 has that auto-warping algorythm? That's the only Ableton I have...I do most of my beats on Fruity Loops...

I only really use Ableton for recording instrument and vocal samples...

Andrew - I downloaded your mix this morning and I'll be grabbing Breakjaw's and Subbass' later tonight.

Also, yeah, don't tell me - there's major sound level transition glitches on this mix. I made it too fast.

sorry didn't catch this yesterday. Version 5 have does auto-warp. it does it by default actually, and you have to turn it off if you for some reason don't want your sample locked to the project tempo. It's usually pretty reliable. There are several ways you can tell it to estimate the warp makers. It can either estimate them by analyzing the beat, or for less percussive samples you can set it to warp by tonal changes, or some other transients (there's more to it than that but I don't have my manual handy)

Check out Live's warp demo (http://www.ableton.com/live6-elastic-audio) (this is version 6 though, I don't think 5 can warp multiple tracks at the same time, you have to do them individually)

Nice! I'll hafta try that...makes remixing much easier I'm sure...I always did my mashups by ear but this will help! Maybe I'll do a whole MP3 mix of my own remixes...we'll see if I can figure out this warp thing...

live makes creating mashups pretty damn easy. The auto-warping is usually pretty solid, it's only vocal samples that it has trouble with.

Just remember when pushing and pulling warp markers on a vocal (assuming the beat track is warped correctly):
- if the syllable or other sound appears to be coming in a bit early relative to the beat then you have to lock a warp point (double click to make it yellow) and pull it in a bit (to the left).
- If the syllable sounds slow or lags just behind the beat, you have to push the marker out a bit (to the right).

It takes practice.
