Even stranger is that Sonic Flyer made some guy's blog.

Thurston Moore solo should be interesting.

Never heard of this band, but the band name reminds me of Fred Fredburger from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy..."I like nachos"

I bet Kings of Leon could play Coachella. They have yet to play, which is surprising. Who knows.

And SXSW is just so overwhelming to me that I don't know if I would have fun.

I went to SXSW last year, and other than the Earlies dropping out at the last minute it was the shitty. The Belle and Sebastian, New Pornographers, Metric show was just dominant. Mogwai rocked balls, Okkervil River dominated my face, Rogue Wave played a set that seemed to start at 3AM or so. And I'm leaving some peeps out... For anyone who has NOT attended SXSW, I not only highly recommend it, I prescribe it. As a doctor of fun, I prescribe the entire week. The film portion is sweet and then the music is just so great. I can't wait for this year... Margot and the Nuclear So and So's should be fun. Never seen them live.

I bet Kings of Leon could play Coachella. They have yet to play, which is surprising. Who knows.

Their new album is supposedly dropping this year, so it seems (hopefully) likely.

Same goes with the Frames, whose excellent new album was already released in Ireland. Anyone happen to catch their set at Lollapalooza last year? Stunning.

Either way, fingers crossed on both accounts.

SXSW is very cool musically but a pain in the ass logistically. best strategy is to pick a club with a lineup you like and stay there all night. late, when the best acts come on, it can be hard to get in to many places.

CuervoPH
01-19-2007, 06:20 AM
I was going to ask about that, Tom, having never been. I'd love to go one year, but I have a feeling conflicts would cause me a logistical nightmare. On the other hand, I may go to the ACL Fest this year for my first time ever. One of our directors gets tix every year and has promised his tix to me this year.

one other piece of advice if you're going: it tends to rain. one of the venues is outdoors (Stubbs). if you're planning on hanging there all night, have a backup plan.

I used search and this was the only thread dedicated to sxsw that came up ... forgive if there are others.

I just got a note about this being recently finalized ... seems they added more bands ... (and it's lost some of those top tier headliners from above like Interpol)

All I can say is ... BUFFALO FUCKING TOM!??!?!

Are there actually 1,300 bands that play each year? I mean, does every single structure in Austin serve as a venue?

Meat Puppets (Austin TX)

whaaaa?

TomAz
02-08-2007, 01:46 PM
last time I went it was only like 800 or 900 bands.

but it's like this:

6 or 7 bands/venue/night
5 nights
= 30 or so bands/venue

and yeah there were probably 30 venues

so, 900 bands.

every little shithole bar on Guadalupe or 6th st or 4th street becomes a 'venue'. They're not all Stubb's or La Zona Rosa or Antone's or the Continental Club, believe me.

There are the official showcases in the evenings but there are also the private/label party/shows as well as unaffiliated gigs. I don't know numbers.

And you can't focus on conflicts and showcases you can't get into it because there'll be tons of the former and could be plenty of the latter depending on how you work things. There are so many good bands, though, every day would have wonderfulness.

NOTE: I didn't see that there was a second page where Tom had already given comments.

it's not a festival its a conference. And it's a blast. Between the day parties all over town to the after parties everywhere, you could serioulsy go for the entire week without silence and sleep. I suggest either taking a bike or renting when you arrive.

Wrist bands sold out the quickest in it's 20+year history this year, so I imagine it to be extremely over-crowded this year.

every little shithole bar on Guadalupe or 6th st or 4th street becomes a 'venue'. They're not all Stubb's or La Zona Rosa or Antone's or the Continental Club, believe me.

yeah this was my question too. i have been invited to several showcases that don't appear to be part of the "official" line up. like at hair salons and CONVENIENCE stores and shit.

I think nothingman is there so hopefully we'll get a full report upon his return.

Nothingman will be attending tonight and will give you a full report. Will be catching a portion of Asobi Seksu then head off to watch the Texas game. After the UT game (watched from a bar or hotel), we will be hitting, in order Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos, Six Parts Seven, Page France, Sloan, Apples in Stereo (or possibly Someone still loves you Boris Yeltsin or the Walkmen--though i've seen the Walkmen live already and haven;t seen Apples...

I couldn't go Wed or Thurs because my grandma passed and I had to fly to Arkansas for the funeral. Full report later tonight.

my buddy was there last night and emailed me this today.

I was there last night, at the Parrish in Austin. A small bar that had about 200 people to see Tom Morello's new solo acoustic project Nightwatchman. Holy fucking shit! For the first two songs he brought out Perry Farrell, and Slash. They did two Jane's Adiction songs, I think Coming Down the Mountain and Stop were the names. Then Tom played 4 or 5 songs acoustic by himself, which were very good BTW. I think he has been listening to alot of Johnny Cash. The songs were what you would expect as far as content. Very good. At the end he brought Slash and Perry back out for an all star jam. After that Wayne Kramer from MC5 joinded them as well as Les FUCKING Claypool. It was absolutely mind blowing. I am still in complete awe. They ended with the Woody Guthrie's This Land is Your Land. I am still walking around with a smile from ear to ear. One guy behind me at the show said that he has been coming to SXSW for 10 years and he has never seen anything like it.

Damn...I tell my girlfriend everyday that we never should have moved from that amazing city.

Really? What don't you like about them?

I saw them open for U2 on their April 2005 date in Anaheim and every single song sounded the same. Honestly, I had no idea where one song ended and the next began. If bands are going open for U2, they need to bring it. I almost walked out, just so I could get away from the sound that band was making. THANK GOD Damian Marley opened for U2 for the other 2 shows I saw that year. It's funny too because I saw some people at the Oakland dates who had been at that Anaheim show and they too mentioned the horribleness that was The Kings of Leon.

Edit: Listening to them was like eating an unsalted, bland, papery cracker. Papery, bland cracker band.

The question for you now is, what do you like about them?

for me, kings of leon have a wonderful southern rock sound. it's for people who can still have an unironic good time to choice lynyrd skynyrd tracks.

I was at that same show in Anaheim. Every song did sound the same. The fact they kept thanking the audience also got to me. I think they may have been over their head on that one. It's a big place.

I like their music because they sound like a rocking house band for a small hole in the wall bar. One of those bars that you wear a pair of levi's and a T-Sheet, just hanging out, smoking and drinking with friends. I hope they come off better in Coachella than they did at the pond.
