I would have had your back, homes, but you split from the group.

Edit: I guess if you didn't split, you wouldn't have been in that situation. Still.

I had to. Audra's sister and her boyfriend kept talking.

What prompted the would-be fracas?

The two said bros started talking during one of Jonsi's quieter songs. Something about high fives and playing flip cup. I told them both to "shut the fuck up." They were not happy about that.

I should have just told Audra's sister and her BF to shut up instead.

I'd like to go on record as saying that if I ever attend a show for a band I really like with folks from the board and somebody is talking rudely, I will shoot them the StabbyStabbyEyeLookOfDeath. And if that doesn't work, it's a swift kick to the knees. Consider yourself warned.

There have been times where I'm expected to hug someone and I REALLY don't want to...it almost feels like animal instinct at work. And these aren't necessarily people I dislike; in fact, a close friend falls in this category. I just don't like hugging them and avoid it when I can. (These are all local family and friends...no board members. So quit being paranoid.)

Other than that...bring on the hugs.

It's just really weird that there are people I don't like to hug, since I'm generally a fan. And I DO feel obligated. Father-in-law aside (the only one that doesn't surprise me), the rest of the "DO NOT WANT TO HUG" people are dating or married to people I have no problem hugging. So it would be really weird to be all, "Hey, male friend! Let's hug! Fuck you, male friend's wife/girlfriend! You give off a weird vibe!"

http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/browbeat/archive/2011/03/11/they-don-t-need-hugs-either.aspx

I guess this is most of my problem. I don't see the need to do it every time I greet and say goodbye to friends and family. It feels forced, and I think that's part of what's turned me off of them completely. Sometimes I really need a hug, but I only crave them from someone I have deep romantic feelings for.

And what's with those people that hug when you first meet instead of shaking hands? Weird!

i tend to think for some guys, it's all about the boob touch though. i do find that i receive way more hugs when my boobs are showing. and certain guys have squeezed extra tight when they don't do this with other people. those are the most awkward hugs of all.

many times i just leave parties and events without saying goodbye to pretty much everyone. if someone specifically invited me and is there because of me, i say goodbye, but other than that, i try to bolt before i get trapped in the hug orgy of saying goodbye to dozens of people, sometimes more than once. that is quite annoying.

i'm just not a touchy-feely person in general. i was always annoyed with TV shows like friends where everyone's sitting with their head in each other's laps, snuggled up together on the couch. who the fuck does this shit?! i get extremely uncomfortable with friends who try to touch/snuggle with me while we're just hanging out.

WOW, Ivy. This is so me, too. Especially the part about leaving without saying goodbye to people to avoid the hugs! I remember when I met you at MELT, Mark gave you a hug, but I didn't and luckily it wasn't weird...I didn't feel like I needed to or like you were expecting it so it all makes sense now. We are kindred, non-hugging, spirits.

Sometimes, when Mark & I go to parties (especially ones he plays at), I offer to hold anything I can of his (beer, equipment, cords) and mine so that my hands and arms are too full for hugs. I have also been known to "load the car" while other people are saying their goodbyes. Also, I try to be in the kitchen or generally "busy" when people arrive to parties I'm hosting so I can walk by and give them a pat on the arm and scurry along, then come back and have a conversation with them after. I am sure some people think I'm standoffish or a bitch, but really...I'm just avoiding the awkward hug hello/goodbye.

There are exceptions to the rule...and obviously if someone WANTS to give me a hug it's cool, but it's not something I generally initiate.

All of this. Especially the stupid leaving a party goodbye hugs to 20 people. I always feel really egotistic to assume that everyone at the party cares I'm leaving, but don't want to be rude and leave anyone out either. Escaping is the best way to handle and I need to do it more.

i started buying TPB lots on ebay. I can buy like 8-12 books at a time for like $30-$40. less than $5 each for like 5-6 issues in a TPB = good deal. rereading a lot of old Hellblazer and Preacher right now. what kinda stuff did you read?

Defintiely into TPBs...discounted on ebay sounds like the way to go.

I read pretty much everything...from Marvel/DC/Image flagship titles to Vertigo, Dark Horse, and very, very indie titles. Big fna of Top Shelf, Oni, Drawn & Quarterly, Slave Labor, Antarctic Press, IDW, and i'm sure a slew of publishers I can't remember now

I'm looking forward to watching the lot of you try awkwardly to recall each person's particular yes/no verdict as the brief window for appropriate physical affection slips by and you're all left toeing the ground and slowly reaching and withdrawing as you flipflop in judgment like a gaggle of agoraphobic virgins at Comic-Con.

yeah, i was a big x-men fan. loved just about every vertigo title and all the early image stuff. i stopped when i got to college (around 95-96), then started buying IDW horror stuff (early 2000s?) cuz i loved the zombie/vampire stuff before it came back into fashion (again) but quickly realized i didn't have the time or the money to get everything i wanted so for the last few years i've just been doing the TPB thing. Plus I HATE waiting a month for more story (probably the reason i watch TV shows a season at a time on DVD too).

It's nice to read through 2-3 years worth of stories in just a few days. I'm trying to get complete runs of x-men/x-factor/hellboy/star wars/Grendel/Walking Dead and some longer running vertigo titles (Fables, Y:The Last Man, Hellblazer, Doom Patrol, etc). Did you like Dan Brereton's art? I just read The Nocturnals TPB and liked it way more than i remembered it the first time around. One of the newer titles i've enjoyed recently is House of Mystery. I think it's the same writer as Fables, which i really like too.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
03-14-2011, 02:43 PM
Brereton is awesome!! Besides Nocturnals he also did a great mini-series called Giantkiller and a pretty entertaining Batman Elseworlds. Super nice guy too, I met him a number of occasions at comic con. i had a pro badge for several years at con and that made it a lot easier to just talk to the artists i love in a low key way.

I've got a couple longboxes of just 2-men related stuff, but i would get bored of certain creator runs and then jump back on. I need to read that whedon/cassidy run of Astonishing, I've heard its great....i feel like i could ramble on and on about comic books

JorgeC
03-14-2011, 02:49 PM
oh yeah, i remember Giant Killer. thanks for tha reminder, i'll have to see if it's in TPB format for cheap. He did some artwork for a Rob Zombie CD too (Educated Horses?). we'll have to talk comics next time we hang at a show.

Also, it doesn't even necessitate touching. A lot of people do air kissing, and I'd say air kissing is the standard for professional situations, at least in my experience.

Met a nice girl a few weeks ago, we started dating, things were going well. Had invited her to go to Arcade Fire with me next Wednesday night. Got a text from her today saying she's not interested romantically but just wants to be friends.

Crushing blows...

It was big of her to tell you before hand, I'll give her that.
Go with a friend instead. You'll have a much better time.

I confess that the romance music in Twin Peaks is oddly effective, but it also might be the wine. I do love this show.

I'm so nervous about my lack of preparation, outfits and plans for the festival I think I may actually spew.

A co-worker IM'ed me that I left my car door wide open at my work parking lot, and it had been like that for 3 hours when she IM'ed me. Luckily I own a shitty minivan, and no one wants it. :thu

This made me giggle.

My confession:

I have been knowingly flirting with a boy at work who has a crush on me. I know it won't go anywhere but I still feel guilty, but I can't stop because it is fun.

I confess I'm watching a Shiba Inu puppycam and listening to shit on Pandora instead of doing work.
