Reason #3,701 not to go to a Smashing Pumpkins gig.

Seriously though, people are still moshing??? WTF? I saw a rather larger mosh pit form during Arctic Monkeys and I then pointed and laughed at those kids. Fucking morons. Moshing and the even more obscene crowd-surfing, are just dumbasses looking for some attention. "Look at me everyone. I'm above everybody in the crowd, look at me instead of the band, I win."

(from NME)
A fan died at a Smashing Pumpkins gig in Vancouver, Canada on Monday night (September 24), after being involved in what police described as a "mosh pit or crowd-surfing incident".

Police explained that the man was removed unconscious from the crowd inside the PNE Forum venue.

First aid specialists attempted to revive him before he was transferred to the nearby St Paul's Hosptial where he was pronounced dead.

Police explained that they did not suspect any foul play and the circumstances were "not suspicious", claiming that the death was due to an "out of control mosh pit".

A spokeswoman for the venue said: "It's just a really, really sad ending to what started out to be probably a very fun night for a young man."

Some bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins have taken a stance against moshing. At a 1996 Smashing Pumpkins show in Dublin, 17 year old Bernadette O'Brien was crushed by moshing crowd members and later died in hospital despite warnings from the band that people were getting hurt. [9] Billy Corgan was heard at another time on stage saying on behalf of his band:[9]

“ I just want to say one thing to you, you young, college lughead-types. I've been watchin' people like you sluggin' around other people for seven years. And you know what? It's the same shit. I wish you'd understand that in an environment like this, and in a setting like this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to the rest of the people around you. I, and we, publicly take a stand against moshing!"

Didnt last very long.

Jeez, I understand it could've been at any (and has been) rock show.

This post is more about stupid moshing in general. So what if I jab at the lame ass Pumpkins? Just so happens, this was the concert (recent) that it happened.

I've been to some very scary/crazy shows. For the most part, I don't get it - it's a bunch of sexual-frustrated, testosterone junkie males, looking for an outlet. Kinda silly if you ask me.

Also Betao - I saw Rage, at both Coachellas, and I have seen Rage many more times than you. So what's your point? I like Rage quite a bit, most of their fans, the ones, that associate intensity with aggression, just don't get it though.

damnit, i hate it when i agree with delta!

serisouly c-dub, you sound like an old fuckin lady. just cuz you dont get it, doesnt mean you have to make retarded generalizations. moshing is part of heavy music, like its own dance, if you will. cant really bust out the cabbage patch at a slayer show, so moshing seems to be a way to move your body that goes with the music a little more. its all in good fun, except for a few assholes who throw blows n shit, but thats not moshing.

if you dont like it, dont go in the pit. but please save us all your whiny rants. do i mosh anymore...rarely. but it doesnt bother me when others do. i can still go up front and not mosh or even be affected by moshing, so i dont know why people get their panties in such a bunch about it. the pit is a small circle in a big crowd, plenty of room for everybody to do their thing. personally id prefer to be in a pit over being packed like a sardine. thats usually when people get killed, is not from a mosh pit, but from being trampled by too many people in packed crowds. you fall down in a pit, people go out of their way to pick you up. but outside a pit, if you fall down, its easier to go unnoticed. id even bet that the kid who died at this show wasnt actually moshing, but thats the general term old people use to describe the madness up front at a GA show.

The only time i've ever experienced moshing is at festivals when other bands on the bill bring in some knucklehead fans. Cdub brought up Arctic Monkeys already, i was up near the front and got caught right outside the mosh pit not exactly easy to get out of at that point and i was just concentrating on staying up on my feet and c'mon should i really expect moshing during the arctic monkeys?

I had my period of moshing. In the early '90's it was relatively sane for a 5'5 120 lb girl to be in there. But that changed quickly. I avoid them at all costs now after having my lip split open, pulled down and trampled, and kicked in the head by a crowd surfer - and this was when I was already trying to stay out of them.

I think the reason why people like c-dub attack moshing so harshly is because of the image its given by some of their fans. Like if you want to mosh, thats cool, but you know there is always some wanker who will take it too far and get an innocent onlooker hurt. Crap like that is why people hate (and attack) moshing. I myself dont really care if people mosh, just dont get other people involved who dont want to be.

I still dont get the wall of death though. Thats just messed up.

I was at this show. It was pretty rough for the 1st 1/2 of the set, but there werent that many crowd surfers, but it was constantly fighting off other people, its pretty suprising that this happened, but if you fall on your head, im sure there are good chances that you may get brain damage or die. And it says thats he didnt regain conciousness after falling, there were no doctors coming inside the pit, im assuming he was crowd surfed out or somethin and then taken to the hospital, where they declared him dead. Pumpkins did the whole 2H+ set and put on a great show. This wasnt something that everyone noticed and they stopped the show or anything. Must have just happened quickly.

Back n the day moshing was all bout getting crunk in a punk way but lookin out for everybody round you. Pickin up somebody if they fell so they wouldn't get trampled. Like bumper cars sorta. Crowd surfin is dangerous anyway & the Seattle Scene is back in the early 90's. Youngins these days just wanna fuck shit up & disrespiect one another. I've lost all my taste for moshing, mostly because i don't go to shows that call for it anymore. I hate people moshing at shows that just don't call for it. Pumpkins don't anymore. The pits at Tool always piss me off--fuckers don't appreciate what they're listening to. When I get stuck by a pit and the cunts get near me I throw elbows. I also confess that at the Pumpkins at Virgin Fest there was an annoying rash of crowdsurfing somehow constantly starting right behind us. My solution was to pretend it wasn't my fault when four kids got dropped on their necks because I kept pretending they somehow fell by accident while passing over me.

Point being: just 'cause I'm at a concert doesn't mean I'm any more comfortable with you touching me or me touching you, and I don't feel I should have to apologize for it. Also, if your arm pumping hits me in the back of the head enough times I will step right up against the person in front of me just so that when they shrug me off I can try to slam the back of my head into you.

There were a couple of times I thought I was going to die at a show. The first was when tool played the old civic plaza here in phoenix back in 98. Everyone was trying to get in front and it felt packed like sardines. I lost my shoe that night and it rained. The second time was when rage against the machine played america west arena. I had floor. Once the lights went out, it went completely insane. I seen some girl try to crowdsurf. She lost her one piece dress in less then 5 seconds. Zack got mad. I was getting elbows and bodies from every direction during the whole show. Some guy got trampled during bulls on parade.

Damn. I should have read this thread before posting in the other one. Then I could have pretended I was dead... just like Doom.

But yeah, I actually didnt go to that show. Not enough money and not a fan of the new 'Pumpkins' at all. It sounds like it was actually one of thier few good shows though.
But yeah, the last few concerts I went to in Vancouver... the crowd really, really sucked ass. I dont know what it is, but in Vancouver and Seattle, people dont know how to mosh or crowd surf. In a mosh pit, you watch everyones back. If someone falls, stop being a fuckin idiot, and pick them up! My girlfriend and I basicaly saved a guys life in Seattle at Gogol Bordello. Like,Rage were intense at Coachella this year, but it was a fairly friendly and caring crowd. People were watching out for eachother, picking people up, and crowd surfing them when they needed out.
I think from now on, at ALL concerts, people should be taught concert edicate. Mosh, jump and whatever as much as you want, but watch out for others!!! Oh, another pet peve of mine at concerts... crowd surfing during the slow songs. DONT FUCKING DO IT! There is a reason bands play slow songs, to let the crowd cool down and regroup. Not to fucking crowd surf. Sorry. Just had to get that out.

So true, everybody needs a breather - for fuck's sake take a break.

I think we've had this discussion somewhere on here, maybe in the concert etiquette thread.

Anywho, moshing started out as an opportunity for people to just fucking let it go with the recognition of those around you, unfortunately it deteriorated to not giving a fuck for anybody around you.

Autopsy on fan who died at Smashing Pumpkins concert set for Thursday

September 26, 2007 - 6:11 pm

By: THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER - The B.C. coroner's office says it won't know until Thursday how a man died at a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Vancouver.

Vancouver police say the concert-goer was unconscious when he was dragged out of the crowd at the PNE Forum on Monday night.

One witness reported the man had fallen while crowd-surfing.

Police couldn't rule out the incident was linked to jostling and semi-violent dancing known as moshing but said there was nothing in the police report to indicate obvious signs of injury.

At a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Dublin in 1996, a 17-year-old girl was crushed and later died when the crowd of people surged to the front of the stage and began to surf over the crowd.

The band stopped the show twice to lift people to safety while Pumpkins' frontman Billy Corgan told the crowd that people were being hurt.

Concert promoters and the band issued statements extending condolences to the family of the man who died.

"The Smashing Pumpkins were deeply saddened to learn about the passing of a young man who attended their Vancouver show Monday night," said a statement from the band.

"As they and everyone else await news from the investigation into the nature of his passing, the band want to express their sincerest condolences to his family and friends."

John Vlautin, vice-president of communications for concert promotion company Livenation, said the company is awaiting an official report from local authorities.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

Concert death not linked to moshing, coroner says

IAN BAILEY

September 28, 2007

Vancouver -- Vancouver's regional coroner says moshing or crowd surfing likely had no role in the death this week of a 20-year-old man who died at a Smashing Pumpkins concert, but that he will need the results of toxicology tests to figure out what killed Kenny Leung of Richmond.

Mr. Leung fell unconscious during the Monday concert on the grounds of the Pacific National Exhibition, where reports suggested he had fallen while crowd surfing. But coroner Owen Court said an autopsy conducted yesterday found no trauma injury to Mr. Leung, leaving the toxicology tests as the next step in figuring out what happened.

"There is absolutely no evidence of any injury and therefore I would say, what you would call moshing or crowd surfing would have nothing to do with this whatsoever. There was no injury on this young man," Mr. Court said.

Only as much as you let it, right C Dub. I still will never understand those people that "disappear" after a child.

I'm not surprised at all that the moshing had nothing to do with it. I'm curious as to when the last reported death due solely to "moshing" has occurred. It can get pretty violent, but the body can take an ENORMOUS amount of abuse.

Funny that it has NOTHING to do with moshing or crowd surfing or the Pumpkins at all. It goes without saying that c Dub is the biggest imbecile on these boards today.

Only as much as you let it, right C Dub. I still will never understand those people that "disappear" after a child.

Tis true.

It's a good thing it wasn't related, that's the last thing music needs right now. My SP jab aside, I was hoping it wasn't due to the band's show or the crowd behavior during it, that's pretty shitty thing to deal with no matter if you are The Smashing Pumpkins or Cannibal Corpse.

I always remember that footage of Pete Townshend being interview in Cincinnati the night the crush happened, he looked like a ghost. You could tell it shook the band up a bit.

I still think moshing was, and still is, quite silly. Especailly these days, when the whole meaning of, as some have pointed out, is completely different from when it started. Same thing for so called, "punk" music. When crap like Avril Lavine is referred to (and sold) as "punk"... well, that's a whole different thread...

KROQ just reported that a guy died and they suspect from injuries sustained in the mosh pit. Can we say BOOOOOOO?

I heard it was not from injuries sustained from the mosh pit via p4k.

yeah, I read it and realized that there is a whole discussion/speculation going on that I really dont care about. I dont I would trust the coroner over a dj on kroq any day though.

I think that's my point. They shouldn't be reporting OLD news, that's just bad journalism.

KROQ isn't really a source for fair journalism.

In fact, KROQ isn't a source for anything. If you listen to KROQ, you should kill yourself.

I didn't say fair, but at least get the story straight.

Oh and, don't tell me what to do.
