Makes sense as they do tend to launch with new hardware release (new Imacs came out a few weeks ago)

supre, that's non-sense! hahah Seriously, you download a lot for some people here (or for yourself) without listening to it in it's digital form? You must have ton of CD-R/Ws (really lot of time in your hands j/k) ... just saying

Discman is too big in my pocket. Even some musicians/audiophile have surrendered (just for convenience sake - am not saying gave up totally) to ipod/mp3/digital music players.

Yeah, vinyl > CD > mp3 but I don't think I can even or will ever hand-carry in plane (or in my road trips) 500 of my CDs/vinyls (7"/12"/LPs) and vinyl player anymore. lol

Trust me, you dont wanna know. But I store everything on DVD's so its not that much space being taken up physically like when I take stuff off my computer. And yeah I burn cd's for my car pretty much other than what I buy. And if I went on a long trip, I would bring essentials and what I was into at the moment nothing else, I dont find myself digging for some obscure album/track on vacation. I have yet to replace my portable cd player actually. I went ''missing'' a couple years ago and never bought another. I still want to get a replacement but just not the biggest priority right now. Call it old school or just plain non sense (I know you mean well) but I see an iPod as one of the biggets badges of conformity right now, and thats not my style. I also DO NOT want to be dependant on iTunes. And when I went on plane I loved having my cd cases and all that in my backpack. Oh and liner notes are always fun to read.

And no, having a cell phone is not being a conformist bitch.(unless its a RAZR) At least I see no need to give into having a portable digital media player at my waist 24/7. There is soembody I know who loves music and vows to never buy cds or records for the rest of his life because he will just download it all and whatnot. I like liner notes too which is why I buy CDs/vinyl but I rip them and they sit. At some point I'm going to start getting sick of them taking up all that space... but not yet. And anyway, liner notes are mostly for the first time anyway especially with lyrics and performance credits online for most everything anyway.

Yes, iPods are popular now but that doesn't automatically make them bad.

Winamp?

I didn't mean iTunes as a music player, rather as an interface to the iPod.

I was talking about this:

http://www.ephpod.com/

which essentially turns your iPod into a hard drive.

I heard about this thing years ago, so I don't know what iTunes or Winamp are capable of nowadays.

mountmccabe

WinAmp can be used as an interface with an iPod. You download a patch from somewhere or other. Probably from the WinAmp People, whomever they are.

erm... not quite true.

your ipod IS a hard drive. you don't need any software to use it as a hard drive. just plug it in and it appears as a detachable device that you can copy files too and from.

the thing you can't do is copy files and have the ipod recognize them when you turn it on. in order to do that, you need itunes, ephpod, gtkpod, winamp (apparently), or some other piece of software that will update the itunes.db file.

for the record, I detest apple for making ipods that way. many mp3 players will recognize all the mp3s you copy to the device, regardless of how you copy them. they make it difficult to try and make us use itunes, and for a large number of people it works. I still use ipods because they're the largest capacity, smallest size mp3 players, with a good interface.

(in fact some of these pieces of software are better than itunes. when my itunes.db file got corrupted, itunes told me I had to reformat my ipod, losing everything. I ignored itunes and opened up gtkpod, which detected the corrupted file and fixed it. no problem. screw you itunes.)

I really like this ipod, but it's going to be hard for me to deem my current one (about a year old) obsolete.

I got 2 new 30gb ipods about 2-3 months ago to replace mine and my gf's old ipods. Now I am thinking about selling them on ebay, and getting 2 of the 160gb. The touch is nice, but not for the price and storage size. If it had at least 30gb, then I would consider it.

iPhone at a cheaper price is great, but I still want the 2nd or 3rd version. By then it should have more storage, a better battery, and the kinks worked out of it.

All of the new products are nice though.

And yeah if I had a choice right now, i would get the 160 and not worry about the touch screen one just yet since it is first generation and you know that things gonna glitch.

Hmmm,

I think the glitches are pretty non-exsistant. The iphone proves that. The one thing people agree on is that the touch screen performs as beautiful as it looks.

I just gave my iPod to my sister then one of old ones broke (way out of warranty - will only get 10% discount in Apple OR else will be an expensive fix by Apple. Who can fix it cheap? Apple gave me some companies but ahhh too lazy to check 'em. HAHA Apple and ipods & these music obsession made me a lazy person.).

Still though you know something is going to happen with these things. Yeah I have tried the touch screen it works nicely, STILL not getting one. Actually at my work I have been around touch screen based computers for the last 3 years so this isnt like''wow this is soo cool!!'' kind of thing. Well some of it I thing is cool like you can touch a photo and resize and manipulating objects, but the interface for me is just another thing in the world full of technology. I think I wont get an ipod in any form until I turn 30. By then, what is there left to add onto it? Seriously, they are almost out of ideas, but there will be something they will cook up. Oh and I dont like the new colors of the iPod shuffles, like pastels? What happend to different primary colors? I still dont see how they never put out a black one of those.

steve lied... I went by the apple store in sf tonight only to find out that the 160 gb models aren't available until friday.

"The new 80GB model costs $249, while the 160GB model costs $349, with availability beginning today" he said.

sure it's available in the online store, with 1-3 days shipping. who the f*ck is that available to?

http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/

Decisions, decisions. Who needs ’em? Why should you have to choose what to put on your iPod? With up to 160GB of storage, iPod classic lets you carry everything in your collection — up to 40,000 songs or up to 200 hours of video — everywhere you go. In a completely new, even thinner, all-metal design starting at $249, this iPod is a modern classic.

Now I'm leaning towards ipod Touch. lol

No iphone for now since I'm keeping my Nokia N73 (for phone call and I will give up it's unreliable web 3G capablity & not so intuitive music player feature) but that $200 price drop ahhhhh just tempting. ipod touch is gorgeous and I'll probably have the patience to do constant choose, select and delete among my music collection (should be fun!). I don't need to bring the now bulky laptop for web surfing at Panera Bread or Borders or B&N or Starbucks or at airport.

I have to try and check 'em first in the Apple store near my place. Ahhhh, the music/computer geeks, nerds, EMOs, hippies and hipsters are going to be in full force again in that store.

When one of my lemon ipods got broke within standard 1 year warranty, Apple replaced it with a new one. Never bought extended warranty for my previous ipods/any electronic purchases (oh except for my DLP TV purchase). But how much and up to how many years of ew you can buy?

In my opinion (even if I don't have extra ton of money now), the ipod touch for $299 8GB is being priced reasonably (for all it's features and stunning looks) in relative or vs. other electronic gadgets that came out in recent years (for example, 4GB Palm Life Drive (heh heh you already know when I got my silly username here, right? These long posts are even ... lol) was way over $300 when I bought it. My younger brother is now enjoying that thing but he is going to be really jealous once I get the ipod touch. Though I got my Nokia N73 for great price vs. it's original manufacturer's price and that I can make a phone call and use it as my secondary very handy camera - it is still overpriced and so less cool vs. that version of ipod touch) But vs. $349 16 GB, the $299 8GB is ahhhh the new, now old 4GB iphone.

Yeah, 16 GB is tiny vs. new 160 GB ipod classic monster lol. Cool factor vs. monstrous storage device (I know some people here prefer the classic cool monster storage device). But hey, go cool kids like me who prefer to carry around gorgeous stunning cool gadget (that's for now the closest I could get to be ... like hip James Bond hahahahahahaaaa I WAS RIGHT, iphone IS WAY EXPENSIVE 2 months ago and eventually this thingy will be cheaper & with better features & capability.)

I would even for sure lose more time in trying to decide which one to listen among the (what?) > 40,000 songs stored in 160 GB ipod). Deciding to watch/play among few favorite TV shows or movies or songs (one would not run out of things or options to do with it - I could listen or watch, select among many of my favorite internet radios, youtubes etc. I wonder how's the audio/video streaming quality of such in that thingy. BEST OF ALL, IF IT COULD DO REAL-TIME PODCAST UPDATES ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, awesome!) in that stunningly gorgeous 3.5 widescreen is really the way to go right now for me. Still convincing myself ;) - I don't really have that much extra time or would not spend that many hours drooling/playing/listening to thousands of songs whenever I'm OUTSIDE MY HOUSE (fuck air travel delays!). Oh wait, I don't really have the money to buy anything. fuck

iPhone owners angry over quick price slash

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc.'s price cut of its iPhone and new lineup of iPod players are expected to ring in healthy holiday sales, but Wall Street investors accustomed to Apple's meaty profit margins appear a bit disappointed.

Apple stock dropped $2.13, or 1.6 percent, to $134.63, in Thursday morning trading. On Wednesday, after the price cut was announced, shares fell 5 percent.

Meanwhile, gadget enthusiasts who snapped up the ballyhooed iPhone before Wednesday are coping with a bitter aftertaste now that it is $200 cheaper within 10 weeks of its introduction.

The price cut, from $599 to $399 for the 8-gigabyte iPhone, immediately set off a debate on online tech forums between early adopters, who said paying a premium price came with the territory, and those who said they felt burned. The price reduction was too much too soon, some complained.

In a discussion on The Unofficial Apple Weblog site, the views were split evenly.

Many customers took the iPhone price cut in stride, however. Ryan Roth, who bought one for $599 on Friday after months of research, chalked up his purchase to "the worst timing ever."

"I realize this is not their problem: I agreed to the original price - it's my fault," said Roth, 32, of New York, who has been thinking about getting a cell phone for four years but held out until the last week. "It just kinda sucks."

But some relief is in sight.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said anyone who purchased an iPhone within the past 14 days and has the receipt can get a full refund under Apple's return policy if they haven't opened the product. If they have opened it, they still can get a refund of the price difference.

The steep price cut less than three months after the iPhone's launch on June 29 - and the discontinuation of the 4-gigabyte iPhone, which sold for $499 - were surprising from Apple, which usually keeps prices steady while adding new features. It normally discounts products only when they age.

Analysts said quick discounts are typical for the cell phone industry, however. The world's best-selling cell phone, Motorola Razr, for instance, debuted at $499 but can now be bought for less than $100.

"This is about Apple learning how to become a cell phone retailer," said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecommunications industry analyst based in Atlanta. "All of a sudden it's in the cell phone business, and everyone is trying to figure out how to measure it, and we don't know yet."

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the company is on pace to sell 1 million iPhones in the United States by the end of September.

The newest iPod media players, also announced Wednesday, include a model called iPod Touch that incorporates the iPhone's touch-screen and adds the ability to wirelessly download songs directly from the new iTunes Wi-Fi Store. Also new are a version of the best-selling iPod, the Nano, that plays video and a larger capacity, 160-gigabyte version of the video iPod, newly dubbed the iPod Classic.

Apple also announced a partnership with Starbucks: Starting in October, the coffee chain's icon will light up on the Touch whenever a user nears a shop that has Wi-Fi access. Users can then download the song that's playing in that Starbucks shop or get a list of the 10 most recent songs played.

Apple executives said the revamped and expanded iPod line - in which the iPhone is recast as the top model - is the company's most robust lineup ever for the holiday season. In 2006, Apple sold a record 21 million iPod players during the holiday quarter, about 50 percent more than in the same period the year before.

Apple has now sold more than 110 million iPods since they debuted in 2001.

Apple just announced the iPod Touch! Now we're talking, but what does this mean for the iPhone?
The main reason I was holding off on the iPhone was price. Now I'm an avid Apple fan, but first and foremost, I like to spend my money wisely. Despite a few gripes regarding the touch keypad, most of the reviews I've read about the iPhone are decent, nothing but praise. But again, price was definitely an obstacle for most, especially if they had to switch phone carriers. Somehow, opening your checkbook to pay early termination fees, $60 and up for an unlimited data plan, and over $500 for the device itself just hurt too much.

Today, I finally did it. I bought an iPhone.

Yes, I know I said I'd wait for the next generation, but I just couldn't resist the $200 price drop. Anyway, I'm taking my chances, because this may be the only chance at nabbing the-soon-to-be-obsolete 4GB model for under $300 (it's OK, I'm not proud). Now why would I buy an iPhone, when I could've waited for the $299 8GB iPod Touch, you ask? Here's my logic:

No Phone: The new iPod Touch may have more storage, but it doesn't have a phone. This means you still have to carry two devices: a phone and the iPod Touch. I don't know about you, but I'm not one to carry an iPod everywhere I go. That's why I say no thanks to the iPod Touch. I'll just stick to an iPhone and eliminate all the excess baggage.

No Camera: The 2-megapixel camera is gone.

No Bluetooth or EDGE: This means no bluetooth headphones, headset, or access to the Internet when you can't find a hotspot. Bummer.

Wi-Fi: Woohoo, it has Wi-Fi — but what's the use of having Wi-Fi if you can't always access a hotspot outside the house? Once you walk out the door, the only place you have free access to the Internet is at Starbucks to buy music.

Storage: Why, oh why on earth would you pay $299 for an 8GB iPod or $399 for 16GB? OK, so it's flash-based, has a multi-touch interface, a beautiful 3.5-inch display, and Wi-Fi capabilities, but the price just seems outrageous when the 160GB metal iPod Classic is only $349. Makes me wanna weep.

No New Features: The iPod Touch is just an iPhone without a phone. And why didn't they add new colors, FM radio, an expansion slot, or a microphone to give it VoIP capabilities? Even the Sony Mylo and Zune have some of these features. Why make it look and act like a PDA, yet leave out important things like a microphone.

The good news is we now have options. Options are great when you don't have to to decide between carriers, or find ways to unlock the iPhone without it blowing up in your face. The iPod Touch has great features, but doesn't compare to the iPhone. Now that the iPhone is cheaper, why not go for the one with the most features at the expense of storage? Besides, I already have plenty of storage for music on my four other iPods.

I would get an iTouch if it was 30GB or more. So my choice... buy an 80GB now (now, meaning after Christmas) or wait a year(ish) until the new iTouch comes out. Hmmm...

Yeah, 16 GB is tiny vs. new 160 GB ipod classic monster lol. Cool factor vs. monstrous storage device

I havent seen the new 160GB... but I am willing to bet the new 160GB is smaller than my current U2 20GB photo.

exactly.

if they put the Touch interface on the 160 GB player with no wifi I'd probably buy it tomorrow. but because they've married it to this low-storage, wifi-centric technology, i'm not interested.

Well they can at least enjoy their $100 store credit to make up for being early adopters.

Oh man, that's shitty. What's the point of having broadband if you can't use it for broadband purposes, after all.

HughesNet, this horrible satellite internet provider for the unfortunate souls that live out in the boonies, limits people to a pathetic 200 megs of bandwidth per day. It used to be called DirecWay, and it was a 550 meg limit, but they switched without telling anyone. So people started wondering why their internet would mysteriously "die" for 24 hours after spending an hour on youtube. And naturally, the outsorced tech support keeps people on the phone for hours doing things that don't work (disconnect the router, now unplug the modem for 20 minutes and restart your computer) until they finally think to check that the reason the service wasn't working is because of the unreasonable bandwidth limit. Ugh.

Sept 6.
WASHINGTON - The Justice Department on Thursday said Internet service providers should be allowed to charge a fee for priority Web traffic.

The agency told the Federal Communications Commission, which is reviewing high-speed Internet practices, that it is opposed to "Net neutrality," the principle that all Internet sites should be equally accessible to any Web user.

Several phone and cable companies, such as AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp., have previously said they want the option to charge some users more money for loading certain content or Web sites faster than others.

"Jobs Apologizes, Gives $100 iPhone Credit
By JORDAN ROBERTSON,AP
Posted: 2007-09-06 17:36:25
(Sept. 6) - Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs apologized and offered $100 credits Thursday to customers who shelled out $599 for the most advanced model of the iPhone, only to have the company unexpectedly slash the price $200 in a push to boost holiday sales.

In a letter on the company's Web site, Jobs acknowledged that Apple disappointed some of its customers by cutting the price of the iPhone's 8-gigabyte model and said he has received hundreds of e-mails complaining about the price cut.

But Jobs added that "the technology road is bumpy," and there will always be people who pay top dollar for the latest electronics but get angry later when the price drops.

Jobs said Apple will hand out $100 credits for Apple's retail and online stores to iPhone customers who aren't eligible for a rebate.

Customers who bought an iPhone within 14 days of the price cut can get a refund of the price difference if they have the original receipt.

The price cut — and the phaseout of the 4-gigabyte iPhone, which retailed for $499 — came less than 10 weeks after the two products hit the market June 29.

Apple's stock, after falling 5 percent on the news of Wednesday's announcements, fell another 1.3 percent Thursday to close at $135.01, or $1.75 lower than Wednesday's close."

Heck I even have a floppy drive installed. I would like a new one though, but I don't wanna spend 1500 right now.

Oh and my ipod is an old 3rd gen 15gb...no color, no photo, no video...just music, which is all I would use em for anyway. Battery still lasts pretty decent too. But when I bought it back in june 2004 I think, fucking 2 weeks later Apple released the 4gens....I was so pissed, but oh well.

computer: lowest-end iBook, circa August 2004...it was a free replacement of my fall 2001 iBook model that was sent in despite being out of warranty because it spontaneously combusted. They lost my old computer, I whined about needed it ASAP for school and such, and they sent me a newer, better one. Then they next day my old one was found, but it was too late. They demanded one of them back, of course. Anyway, I'm still paying off this shit because apple instant loan (MBNA) is terrible. One late payment and your interest goes up to 20some percent and stays there for five years.

Hey thanks. Glad you like it. It's taken a lot of work, and a lot of hunting around the internets and talking to people to get information regarding some of those recordings and setlists, but it's fun. I still need to work and finish the 2006 section, then start adding pictures, and then finally finish up the contributions/information pages....but it's coming along.

well I'm not gonna host any of the songs/sets on my server, cuz that could be risky business, and I really can't say I wanna be distributing mp3's to everyone (as I collect most shows I can in flac, and use mp3 for my personal use), plus just because someone taped the show and I might have a copy of it, doesn't mean it's automatically on some webpage for download. A lot of these sources are available in trading circles and some torrent sites (though only for limited times, as seeders eventually drop off) - so suffice to say, these recordings (some at least) ARE out there if you know where to look or know the right person. Plus you can find some on soulseek as well. But thanks for the feedback, glad you like site too....it will be finished...one day...

when they come out w/ a 160 gig i phone, that i dont need at&t for then i'll buy it. till then im sticking to my regular devices

Even if storage space doubles every year like it pretty much did for the old-school iPod, 160gigs are at least 4 years away, unless they switch to HDD, which I doubt they will do.

And it's not just a phone-less iPhone. It has FUCKING WI-FI. w00t w00t

That's the prevailing attitude in Amish country, perhaps.

Now people don't have to spend a thousand dollars switching to shitty AT&T to enjoy an iPod with a screen actually worth the time to view, and on top of that, they can enjoy the benefits of wi-fi. It's the future. It will revolutionize the world just like the original iPod did. Ten years ago, did anyone think we'd be able to carry around thousands of songs, with movies and tv shows, in our pockets, and be able to purchase new ones on the fly without needing a computer?

not only that, but if you have a server somewhere that has all your music. You will be able to access it from anywhere, using wifi, and stream your songs giving you almost infinite "storage" capabilities. In 3 or 4 years local storage of music, movies, photos will be practically obsolete.

These are both ridiculously overblown statements.

The iPod (not to mention earlier portable digital music jukeboxes) has yet to revolutionize the music industry much less the entire world.

And "3 or 4 years" is highly optimistic. And what with DRM and streamable qualities I'm not sure that "10 or 15 years" isn't optimistic.

3 or 4 years may be pushing it, but if WiMAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX) ever takes off, which it will, it is not ridiculous to think that local storage of music will become obsolete. You will be able to stream all your music wirelessly from a remote server and will rarely need local storage of music.

WiMAX will take care of the streaming "problem" the buffering capabilities will be so good that there will never be any pauses. You will be able to buffer an entire album before it starts playing. Now with videos this could be a problem, but not with music. Besides I dont ever plan on watching a 2 and a half hour movie on my ipod anyways.

No one has a damned clue what the business model would look like or what people would be willing to pay. I'll be damned if I want to pay $6.99 a day or more for a wifi connection when I'm out of my house, just to listen to my own damned music. I mean portability is supposed to be the point with this thing right?

i still don't get the point of an iphone minus phone and camera capabilities.

Pics in 2MP phone camera are shit. I don't like iPhone as a phone or sec cam. It looks like it will be broken to pieces when you drop it just once. I'm prone to dropping cell phones.

I prefer my Nokia N73 over iPhone (as a phone and it's 3+ MP camera).

So yay with iPod Touch!
