View Full Version : The Worst Live Bands Playing Right Now: According to Scientific Proof Magazine

So what are the worst acts you've had the misfortune of seeing live? Not just shameful youthful mistakes and bad opening acts, but also bands you loved until they disappointed live, and awful festival exposures.

Sparta (maybe it's just horrible music that was played competently live, I dunno, but they hit me in the head with a water bottle and I was a hundred rows back)
Howie Day (a very poor girl's John Mayer)
The Mars Volta
Train
Peaches
Wilco (yawn)
Bush
Goo Goo Dolls
No Doubt (lots of energy but Gwen sounded HORRIBLE live and spent half the time trying to lead a crowd that barely knew "Just a Girl" into singalongs)
Queens of the Stone Age (yawn)
Interpol (mediocre music since TOTBL plus the fact that they obviously don't care about anything anymore but money, groupies, and flashy suits plus lifeless live show at Coachella where Paul Banks couldn't even sing decently)
James Blunt (heard him butcher "Where Is My Mind" when I arrived to the Mojave tent early last year because the clock on my camera was 5 minutes ahead...horrifying)
Soledad Bros
Depeche Mode (yawn)
New Pornographers (so yawn I left in record time)
Bright Eyes (Coachella 05 set consisted of Digital Ash stinkers and you'd think The Faint would have been able to inject life into them, but they couldn't)
Weezer (I understand their other performances are better, but they were horrible at Coachella 2005)
too many opening acts to mention, but all the openers for Muse I've seen have really fucking sucked

God, cannot agree more about Blunt. Bloody awful. My girl thought he was so hot before seeing him, and dragged me to the tent. By the third song, she was ready to leave.

QOTSA is hit or miss. They are really good if Josh doesn't jerk off his guitar the whole night. TMV are really good live as well however, with all that sound they project it really does matter as to who is running the soundboard and the venue they are playing. Depeche Mode sucks in general so I am not going to warrant them with a response. I have not seen No Doubt but everyone I know who has seen them says that they are awesome live. I will be seeing them next year when they tour.

I saw The Mars Volta here in their hometown before I even listened to their albums, and their live show is what got me into it. That was back for their first LP.

I only saw a little bit of Peaches this year. I dunno' what to say about it.

I saw an equal small bit of Wilco in 2005, so I don't know what to say about that one either.

I saw Queens of the Stone Age at Lollapalooza in 2004. They were pretty awesome then. That was for Songs for the Deaf.

Interpol was boooooring at Coachella, but they played a pretty good show at V-Fest. Although, the weather sort of helped with that. (It was sprinkling nicely)

I saw all of James Blunt, front and center, in the Mojave. I wanted to get real close for Metric and Wolf Parade and The Dears. I think his album is a bore, but I didn't think his live set was that bad. It was okay.

Depeche Mode was alright. I hear that they put an awesome show if you see them outside a festival.

Audio Bullies (waiting for daft punk) trainwreck.
Ladytron -i like them quite a bit, but they were very mediocre in 2006
Slightly Stoopid- (waiting for wu-tang clan) terrible terrible music and stuck in a sea of bro's
Dashboard Confessionals (waiting for the flaming lips and the pixies)-oof painful stuff and having everyone singing along to her hair everywhere or w/e it is)
The Editors-fuck these guys a band that doesn't have a single creative bone in their body, one thing to copy joy division's music completely another to go up there and ape Curtis' epilepsy. One of the few bands i would advocate throwing things at.

If you saw them at the Wiltern in 2004 The Exit DOES NOT SUCK.(The Evening does though) Odds are you didnt so you dont know.

And yes a list expected no less from pitchfork jr.

Oh you forgot one, She Wants Revenge

Queens Of The Stone Age can be hit or miss for sure. But it used to always be a hit when Nick was still in the band. Luckily I saw them 3(or 4) times with Nick before it went soft after he left. And half the songs on Song For The Deaf cant be performed anymore since Mark or Nick are no longer present which dissapoints me to no end.

I accompanied my grilfriend to an Incubus concert for the first time a few months ago and the lead singer took off his shirt and put on glow in the dark gloves, the lights went out and he was doing like glow in the dark hand puppets for about 20 minutes, that was by far one of the worst things I have ever seen at a concert...EVER.

I saw The Evening open for Muse, that night Muse played to an empty house and they actually werent the hottest. But I saw them in Portugal one time and am well aware of their magnificentness.

I am going to agree on James Blunt.
I saw Hella opening for Mars Volta, they were both shit. I really want to see MV in proper surroundings.

This band called WILDERNESS that opened up for Explosions In the Sky was fucking atrocious.

Melissa Auf Der Mar's solo band at Curiosa was disgusting.

I like Wilderness. And, I enjoyed them live.

Mindless Self Indulgence was just that, and it was painful

Weezer at Coachella was the most piss-poor excuse for a show I've ever seen.

The first time I saw Silver Daggers, they were beyond atrocious. The sax player has since helped that, and they are pretty damn good now.

Most the time, bands just bore me, rather than drive me nuts

And, Algunz, when did you see PiL? I can imagine they sucked after the original lineup fell apart, but that first group was the definition of solid.

Celebration
Blood Brothers
The Jesus and Mary Chain (I know a lot of people liked their set at Coachella, but I just wasn't feeling it)

Weezer...good point. That Coachella set was pathetic. I wonder why they screwed Coachella over with such a terrible performance, with no "El Scorcho", but apparently every other crowd that year got a decent one, WITH "El Scorcho!" Weezer should be banned from Coachella for life for that incomprehensible discrimination. What the fuck did we ever do to Rivers to deserve that? He even played "El Scorcho" for the white trash KROQ kids at Inland Invasion that year.

I know I probably stand alone on this one.

I liked Weezer's performance at Coachella. Though, I'll have you know that I am a late fan to the Weezer experience. I'm most partial to the Green Album, which most would say is a horrible album. I think I was like 14 or 15 when I heard it. I didn't know a lot of music then, but it stuck into my head and I've been a big fan of it since.

So maybe that's why I enjoyed their Coachella set. I've never seen Weezer before they supposedly crapped out, so I probably can't even understand.

I've seen some terrible openers in my time, some that I don't remember. But I have to say the worst live performance I have ever seen has to be The Mars Volta. And for a reference point, my first concert was Milli Vanilli/Young MC and my second concert was Kenny Loggins. Yes, they were THAT bad.

The most disappointing live performance has to be Four Tet.

ok some my worst acts I have seen...

Har Mar Superstar: Opened for the strokes and I just wanted the fat hairy man to put his pants back on and leave the stage.
Weezer: Seen them twice both times crap.
Stereophonics: already mentioned why
Good Charlotte: Another Summer Sonic 2003 crap band. The only reason I went was for Radiohead..and they made it all worth it.
Hieroglyphics: It was so hot and they were getting upset that the crowd wasn't getting into it. It just annoyed the hell out of me.
Primal Scream: Coachella 2003 they were just terrible almost to the point where I couldn't listen to them anymore. But then I saw them at Fuji Rock later that year and they came on the stage with Kevin Shields and blew me away. What a come back!
Televison: Yes, the almighty Marquee Moon, Television. Spent 45 minutes tuning there guitars on stage and spent the rest of their set completely out of tune..I haven't been able to listen to the album since...
Godsmack: Rule of thumb kids, just because tickets are free doesn't mean you should go to the show. I just don't know why I was there.
It was just terrible.
Pete Yorn: I went with a co-worker who bought a ticket and honestly he just wasn't a good performer. some of the songs were okay but it was an empty venue and no energy.
The Vines: I don't know what the hell happened. I heard so much about how great these guys were and after picking up their Cd and seeing them live it was terrible. I thought he had some kind of ADD of something because he would spazz into this weird things and it was just not good at all.

will add more but these stand out in my head for now...

probably the worst show i've seen is Dan Deacon at V-fest 2007. He came late, didnt have the batteries needed for his keyboards or deck, and played the most god awful sound of very cheesy dance music that made we want to shove a fork into my ear. He was followed by Girl Talk, which wasnt much better. Go figure.

What was funny was that all the kids at the festival were in the dance tent for only dan deacon/girl talk. My mates and I stood on the side watching everyone go crazy, and I told them "watch this, the minute Girl Talk is over and Dieselboy goes onstage, all of the kids will scatter".

And I was right.

Um, lemme think...

Oh yes,

BLOC PARTY

Worst fucking live band, period. The vocals were too low in the mix, nothing on-stage was interesting (bar the drummer), and it just meshed awfully. It's been 3 years since that show, and to this day I can't believe they sounded 40 times worse than the Bravery... Again, thank GOD Interpol saved that show...

Other honorable suckages:

Fountains of Wayne (Coach 07') - Seriously, if we HAVE to wait through you to hear Regina, at LEAST have the fucking courtesy to play Stacy's Mom if you're going to fill our ears with crap.

Happy Mondays (Coach 07') - Ugh... Terrible. Left after 3 songs. It couldn't be helped, mind you, with all the sound problems and shit they had, but it was just awful.

Kristeen Young (Morrissey 07') - It doesn't help that I dislike Bjork, as is, but this woman believes she's Bjork-lite, except minus ANY SENSE OF RHYTHM that would make you want to move... Made that night even worse than it already was.

Morrissey (same show) - ;__________; He fucked up EVERY. SINGLE. SMITHS. SONG. And nothing else... That show made me want to cry.

Happy Mondays suck on CD, so that wouldn't be a surprise.

And even Interpol knows they suck live now, and they don't care. As long as enough vapid people keep using the band as a status symbol, and eat up their mediocre new music, and watch their phoned-in live shows to drool over Carlos D, they get paid, and are happy.

Yeah, Bloc Party underwhelmed at Coachella 2006. I heard such good things about their 2005 show. Oh well, not like the band was that great to begin with. Yay for bandwagon-jumping.

Happy Mondays suck on CD, so that wouldn't be a surprise.

Um. No. Pills N' Thrills And Bellyaches does not suck in any way, shape or form.

I've been pretty lucky I guess, only a few stick in my mind.

Modest Mouse - Isaac looked bored, and hey, so was I
Interpol - I've seen 'em a couple times but Paul was on autopilot the first time. Second time rocked muchly however...
Deathcab For Cutie - not a festival band, thanks very much
Of Montreal - sound problems at Coachella so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt in October
Ben Harper - just dull, I'm afraid. Didn't feel it...

Sparta - Opened for Weezer in 2002

Dashboard Confessional - also opened for Weezer in 2002. I almost left..

Weezer - Coachella 2005 was HORRIBLE. When i saw them in 2002 they were amazing. They played all the great songs from Pinkerton and Closed with a 20 minute version of "Only In Dreams"

Wolfmother - they really helped me catch some extra Z's in 06

The Raveonettes - God talk about a wall of horrible noise...Sharin Foo was the best part

Har Mar Superstar? How could I forget him? Disgusting freak threw pubes at me, and then a drop of armpit sweat dripped into my eyeball.

He is my all time number one worst act...Now usually I have a sense of humor about acts like this but he just wasn't funny or ironic or anything. Just disgusting....

Morrissey (same show) - ;__________; He fucked up EVERY. SINGLE. SMITHS. SONG. And nothing else... That show made me want to cry.

Oh i think i just blocked out that Moz show fucking disgrace I wont ever pay for a ticket to see him ever again, won't buy a morrissey or smiths cd ever again hell even if the smiths reunite I'm not going to see it even if they play coachella all be somewhere fucking else.

How did Moz fuck up the Smiths songs? Did he change the lyrics, notes, what?

Weezer at Coachella was the most piss-poor excuse for a show I've ever seen.

I'm glad others feel this way abouyt the Weezer performance in 01. I tried to tell a girlfriend of mine about it and she said "well, you just dont get them the," WTF BS! I felt like the attendees of the simpsons lollapalooza during thier set, swaying back and forth with my knees together - booring.

i have every right to be bitter. I paid 50 bucks for that ticket and it ended up being a fucking terrible show and it was all because of Morrissey's ego all he did was bitch about the sound all night. Drop lines and literally moan.

Of Montreal have been superb the three times this year i've seen them (I didn't watch them at Coachella)

Interpol can be very hit and miss - either amazing, or dull as shit, but this can also be said for..

QOTSA
Sonic Youth
Primal Scream
Rilo Kiley
The Strokes

...and remember, bands do have off nights (some more than others).

lol.

Well, good thing you went through that. It just meant he got it out of his system so that when he came to play Vegas he was in a AWESOME mood. In which he was. And the show was superb. :)

I went to a KROQ show where they headlined. I walked out. Really wasn't worth it. Pile of manure.

Silversun Pickups and QOTA were good though. Interpol broke a guitar and cut their set short by about fifteen minutes. I was very angry.

That's sweet. Maps, Midlake, Kissaway Trail (yeah, I wish I caught their set at O2 Wireless), Patrick Wolf, Bat for Lashes, Gotan Project, Camera Obscura, IFB, The National ...

I remember something ...

Howling Bells is MEH. Don't waste your time on that one. Oh how appropriate, it's one of the worst I've seen. And again, how so appropriate that they opened for (The Killers) one of the most disappointing shows I've seen this year or maybe all-time.

- Super Furry Animals in Portland in '05 . Better than Ambien.
