The last few fallow weeks were obviously a test. Now, having come out the other side, we're rewarded with one of the richest weeks in recent memory. This is not a comprehensive list. If your favorite band is releasing something that I haven't included, please make mention of it for everyone's benefit, but don't cry about it like I meant to hurt you personally.

Architecture in Helsinki – Places Like This
Caribou – Andorra
David Dondero – Simple Love
Earlimart – Mentor Tormentor
Jeremy Enigk – The Missing Link
Imperial Teen – The Hair the TV the Baby and the Band
Kinski – Down Below It's Chaos
Kula Shaker – Strangefolk
Talib Kweli – Eardrum
The Mekons – Natural
M.I.A. – Kala
Minus the Bear – Planet of Ice
Travis Morrison Hellfighters – All Y'All
The New Pornographers – Challengers
Rilo Kiley – Under the Blacklight
Josh Ritter – The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
The Waterboys – Book of Lightning

Oh, and yeeeeeeeeeee-haaaaaaaaaaaa! A whole mess of Garth Brooks albums are being reissued tomorrow, so you can satisfy your inner cowpoke.

Pseudo-cowpoke, then. At any rate, he managed to fool all the good ol' boys I grew up with in Cowtown, Ohio.

Thanks for this. I saw it listed, but when it comes to dance/techno/electronica/drum & bass/whatever it's being called this week, I plead ignorance about which releases are worth mentioning.

Sorry, man. I wasn't intending to put this up until I hopped on iTunes last night and saw there were about ten things I wanted.

The Flaming Lips disc – UFO's at the Zoo: The Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City – isn't a traditional live album. It apparently has more in common with a DVD. Here's how Pitchfork describes it: "This document, which is neither simply an album nor simply a concert film, is being issued as an MVI album, which means it plays on DVD players but not CD players, and contains bonus digital material. In other words, it presents the visual and the musical with equal emphasis, but will likely be outdated before the second-gen iPhone is out."

I have to get Challengers. I love that album.

I forgot Mentor Tormentor came out this week. I'ma gonna have to think about that one.

I want Andorra but there's just too much good stuff this week.

I'm interested in Under the Blacklight but from interviews with them and whatnot it sounds like I'll be disappointed and I'ven't heard it so I'm gonna wait on that. I need to hear Kala more to decide on that one.

This rules my face so hard.

So Zia had this; Wikipedia is old. It is Challengers then three blank CDs! If'n somebody linked to this already I didn't see it.

The blanks are in cases and are gussied up to look like real CDs and presummably are ready for burning the bonus content once you download it.

I'mn't entirely certain why but I'm giddy.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this was only $2 more than the standard edition.

Please fix your quote.

Also I would disagree. It'sn't the greatest album of ever but it's strong and anyone who has dug their previous albums will find this very enjoyable. No "die-hard" status required.

Mass Romantic >> Challengers > Twin Cinema > Electric Version.

Tho I must admit I've heard the latter the least and almost left it off the countdown.

Sorry for the triple post, but this is one of the few bands I can say this about:

Mass Romantic = Electric Version = Twin Cinema = Challengers.

Also...mr ghettojournalist, The Onion AV Club, the only reviewing publication that matters (they are The Clash of independent music reviews), gave Challengers an A-. Rolling Stone can't contemplate the excellence of any album that isn't signed to a big label. Entertainment Weekly? Phooey on them.

Yes, Neko was there for the Letterman performance.

Also - holy hell - Neko used to be in Cub! I had no idea! Only for the first few 7"s or so which is why I didn't know. Also because she played drums for them.

OK, I'm less excited that the Executive Edition bonuses are going to be doled out over the next several months.

I'd download now but I'mn't sure if I wanna go 256kbps mp3s or FLACs. Of course you can do both if'n you want but I don't see the draw of that particular route. If'n you dl the FLACs you can make your own mp3s of whatever bitrate you want and not worry about losing access to the material.

Also I like that you can dl each file up to three times.

BIIIIIIIIIIG mistake. I hope you at least missed them for Peter Bjorn & John.

I loved them at Coachella. Definately one of the highlight acts. They didn't play anything from Challengers though. They just played a mixture of old songs infront of the new album cover and said that that is what it would look like.

Ha ha! If you haven't given Challengers a listen, I'd recommend it. While, as I'm sure you'd guess, I'd argue with your opinion, I think it genuinely might be (dare I say) challenged by this new one. I think it's their most direct album yet.

I don't know if I'm feeling this Kala album. I want to, because so many others do... But I'm having a lot of trouble.

What is up with that $20 song? Pixies lyrics on top of Blue Monday? I dunno'. To me the album sounds like a weird Volta.

Somewhat Damaged
08-22-2007, 07:03 PM
Kala is growing on me fast. I wasn't really feeling it the first couple of listens, though "Bamboo Banga" and "Jimmy" were instantly great, and I still think it's a step back after listening to Arular earlier. That said, I think this is better than Volta, though I'm not sure they're such similar albums to really warrant a fair comparison to one another.
