Also, I wasn't even going to post in this thread, but I do love me some disco. The Bee Gees are one of the most underrated groups of all time.

Dancing Queen is like the tenth best Abba song. But if not for the fact that it's been played out for anyone by the time they're about 13, it's still a good track. I lean more towards S.O.S., Waterloo, Fernando even (if I'm feeling limp-wristed), Money Money Money, Lay All Your Love On Me, Take A Chance On Me, Knowing Me Knowing You, et cetera. All quality shit, I say.

Side 4 of Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" is Moroder at his best. "Our Love" and "Lucky" still blow my mind.

ABBA were massive pop superstars before Disco took off, and they did some interesting stuff well past Disco died.

And actually, even during the Disco era, they were pushing into the synth-pop that was a few years in the future. "Lay All Your Love On Me", "The Visitors", most of the Voulez Voulz album (though I don't care for that one.) And even when they had Disco hits, they were doing other things on their albums. Some was good, some was dreck (Has anyone every sat through all of "Our Last Summer"? There's your perfect piss break during Mamma Mia.)

But they should be on here, and they should win.

However, I'm voting for the Bee Gees, simply because "I Started A Joke" is one of the best fucking songs ever written.

EDIT...yes, I know "...Joke" has nothing to do with Disco either, but it's the best song by any band on this list. And Disco was dead before "The Visitors" came out, so forget that point, but it's still cool.

RotationSlimWang
08-15-2007, 05:46 PM
Lay All Your Love On Me is fucking awesome to me because (a) I have amazing plans to put it on a soundtrack some day that are probably going to ruin the song for ABBA fans everywhere forever, and (b) because it's possibly one of the first ever goth-ish tunes. Seriously, listen to that fucking song--it sounds like the theme from Castlevania. And the chorus is haunting as a motherfucker.

Even if ABBA was on here though, I'd probably have to give it to The Bee Gees myself. They had an unfair advantage since they scored Saturday Night Fever, which for anyone under the age of--what, 40 or so at best?--remains the principle image of disco in our minds. And they did a goddamn good job with it, you can't really fault them. So, the brothers Gibb take this one away.

Still though, ABBA fucking rules.

actually it's doubly inaccurate.

Parallel Lines was Blondie's most popular album and came out in 1978.

There never was any "Disco is Dead" movement. There was a "Disco Sucks" movement which began, peaked, and died all in 1979.

The problems are the independent actions of semi-functioning sentient beings. They are only emboldened by passivity.

Ehh. Some of them. The board is bigger, has higher traffic now. A wider variety of parasites stick around so there isn't a single full-spectrum solution for all of them.

Which means each and everyone of us fuckers has to think and come to similar and effective conclusions. And that's just never gonna happen.

Hence the half exodus, the half dormancy.

The solution I have decided upon involves me amusing myself at others expense.

Well said, Pot.

Also, Tom?

First paragraph: White +10 (I saw that and thought, wtf? I love Barry White!), Boney M +0, but Gloria Gaynor -5. "I Will Survive" was of course a disco song.

Second paragraph: -25. You had me fooled that you had taste, there for a while, mob.

He/she misspelled Gaynor. It was a call out. Also, the Bee Gees are bigger than disco. They rise above the genre. They outshine it. I am actually surprised that the outcome to this poll wasn't obvious to this orangutan before they posted it. Well, not really. But whatever.

Anyway, just witness, Tom, witness the majesty here. Just try to deny the awesomeness that is this track. You just can't.

It may be amusing now, but living through that shit was really bad. I'm telling you. There was no internet or ESPN to hide from it. It was fucking everywhere. Polyester leisure suits. Lapels wide enough to land an airplane on. Bad, bad hair. And all of it meant earnestly. American Idol is the Metropolitan Opera in comparison.

That's not accurate.

Alright, so it looks like I'll have to eat my liver on this one but only in part. Heart of Glass hit the charts in 79 (released in 78) which they caught some flak for as it was considered to be pandering to the disco movement by Blondie's rocker fans. They didn't really become a huge deal until 80 though, at which point the disco backlash movement can be said to have permeated the culture, agreed?

I wasn't saying that Blondie wasn't disco necessarily, just that they weren't BLONDIE until disco had already passed. Also, did anyone else know that Debbie Harry was a Playboy bunny before Blondie? Weird. Someone find those photos, please.

I always considered "Rapture" the first commercial rap single in a sense. Sort of ironic really, in retrospect.

It was the first big rap single. Still fucking ruled though, even though the rapping sucked. But Call Me was their biggest hit, and I think both Rapture and Call Me were bigger than Heart Of Glass.

So what album cover were you and your friends doing blow off of then? Manfred Mann? Greetings from Asbury Park? Kansas? Really, I want to know.

Blondie was a weak "new wave" band that totally abandoned their sound for commercial success with Parallel Lines. Lester Bangs wrote a whole book on it.

I grew up five minutes away from Asbury Park. My first drug connections as a dealer were with the gang who ended up running Asbury, which had once been the gleaming jewel of the Jersey Shore until riots in the late 70s kept all the rich white New Yorkers in hiding. Kinda sweet as far as I'm concerned--way to go, negros.

Fuck you, buddy.

Yeah, Blondie is much later and ABBA is pop / Psuedo disco. Not to take anything away from them. Gotta go with Donna Summer here. "I feel love" is the serious ground breaking shit. Still relevant today. "Love to Love ya" is the nasty dirty biz too.
