View Full Version : Why Can't they sing good??!!

I want to know what is up with record companies all the sudden getting high on "artists" that can't sing worth a crap and that should've saved their money rather than import people they find on the streets of Haiti and Mexico City. Seriously. Everytime I see Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" or hear it, I want to gouge out my eyes while bashing my face against a toaster:

Her face bugs too.

Example 2: Sean Kingston. "Complete Akon ripoff anyone?"

Example 3. The mo' fugg that started it all:

Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Billy Corgan and Macy Gray's voices all bug the shit out of me. Bowie and Corgan wrote some amazing songs though.

Also, it's "why can't they sing WELL", not good.

Also bug is right; there's nothing new about non-perfect singers.

I really like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. And I will follow Spencer Krug to any band he sings and writes for. And I love Neutral Milk Hotel. And Dylan. And Waits. Etc.

It's about conveying emotion. You don't have to have an imperfect voice to convey emotion but for a lot of folks if they focus on singing the right notes and staying in control the singing comes across blank.

Vocal prowess isn't necessary. And, Amy Winehouse is a better singer than most of the bands that you listen to.

that Belushi clip is amazing, I can't believe I haven't seen that before. I just watched Woodstock the other day.

Amy Winehouse can sing. That rehab song sucks but her other stuff is pretty great. I like her first album a lot. Fuck Me Pumps in particular.

I hate you for posting Akon video in this thread.

Just wait until you get subjected to Kate Nash (at Coachella next year, no doubt). Painful is an understatement.

i hate akon. there's this one song a former co-worker would ALWAYS have playing in his car that always sounded like that "this is the remix edition, of the song about pissin" song that chappelle did.

i would say there's nothing new about bad singers in the industry. like, i wouldn't say janis joplin has the voice of an angel, but i sure do love to hear her sing. it's about the emotion, like someone already said.

though i would like to add hatred points for the rehab song and billy corgan.

completely agree on all counts.

I agree with John as well.
I love Tom Waits. He cant actually sing at all. But his voice is what makes his music so special.
Another one is Niel Young. He doesnt have a particularily good voice as well. But it just fits with his music.

But I dont think this thread was meant to criticize artists like that. I agree. I fuckin hate that Sean Kingston guy.

Good singing is craft. Bad singing is art. haha huh.

mountmccabe

Disclaimer: I haven't watched those YT clips.

Also I think mountmccabe kind of missed the point. Or maybe singing voice and perfect notes was all GDL meant and mccabe took his cue too readily from that.

The craft of singing, to me, is in knowing how to enunciate phrases for certain effects, how to approach the lyrics, what to hold and all those little details. I mean that's sort of what some of these folks upthread are getting at but I figured it need to be laid out more explicitly.

I can't call Alec Ounsworth or Neil Young or any of those people bad singers, really. Their singing may not be pretty or note-perfect or classically controlled but they're damned good singers, if'n ya ask me.

I don't like bad singers in general, although there is a certain amount of subjectivity to this. I think Morrissey and Thom Yorke have excellent voices, while couple people in here apparently disagree.

I can't believe Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Morrissey, and Thom Yorke are even mentioned in a thread titled "Why Can't they sing good??!!". For fuck's sake people, come on!

Morrissey is able to do a bunch of cool things with his voice. So are all the others. It's not like they sing off key or anything.

Tom Waits is just a bit raspy. Bowie is just a bit "far out" and "freaky". Thom Yorke is like the extreme opposite of Tom Waits. Different stuff, but they can all sing.

There is nothing good, or artistic, about Cover Your Ears Say Oww singing. Or their music, for that matter. It's just awful, ear-splitting squaking for the sake of being as annoying and obnoxious as possible.

Having an agonizing voice is a guaranteed way to get a high score on richdork nowadays. Cover Your Ears, dance punk bands, Joanna Newsom, and while not agonizing, lo-fi indecipherable mumbling is also acceptable.

actually cyhsy sounded pretty good at lollapalooza, despite all the negative reviews i heard of their live shows. granted i wasn't super close to the stage, so maybe it was just good from a distance.

ridicule them (and me) all you want, but i think his voice is what takes the music from "good" to "really good".

Riiiiiiiiiight, because he is only as good as Amy Winehouse and Akon... Comments like this makes me want to end peoples lives, in fact 19 lives to be exact, before my own.
