They can be just as important as album openers and closers. And speaking of which, it seems there are far more amazing album closers than openers. But enough about that, I'm talking about live performances. Mine?

Openers:
Radiohead - There There (first Radiohead song I heard live and it was heavenly)
Morrissey - How Soon Is Now?
Daft Punk - Close Encounters -> Robot Rock (fuck yes)
Jarvis Cocker - Fat Children (Jarvis stolling on-stage, busting a pose, promising to heal our sunstroke with the power of music, and throwing candy at the crowd while the rest of the band was playing an extended intro owned all, especially when he finally started singing...pure class)

Closers:
Sigur Ros - Untitled #8 (nothing else comes close, nor ever will)
Radiohead - Street Spirit (fuck)
Morrissey - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Arcade Fire - In the Backseat (too bad they rarely play this anymore)
Bjork - Declare Independence (REACTABLE!!!! w00t)
Prince - Let's Go Crazy (I really did go crazy because it's the song I most wanted to hear)
Roger Waters - Comfortably Numb (even without the fireworks and pyro it would've been epic)
The Dresden Dolls - Half Jack

I seen U2 at the Sports Arena for their Rattle and Hum Tour. I had crappy tickets in section 24. My girlfriend at the time and myself started walking towards the stage on the other side of us. The lights went out as we got close. We continued to walk until we were right in back of the stage leaning on the rail. They started playing the beginning of Where the Streets have no Name for what seemed like 2 minutes. Right as Bono sings "I Want To Run..." these bright white lights light up towards the crowd and we could see almost every person as they were right in front of us (even in the bad area where our seats were at). It was one of those moments that your mouth just drops in awe. We were there for like 30 seconds before this big security guard in a yellow jacket came and motioned for us to leave. I still remember that moment every time that song is played.

Maybe if you're a filler fan and ignore their powerful emotional songs and soul-shattering goodness and only value obvious entertainment. Do you go to Radiohead shows and snore during Exit Music and only pay attention during fast songs? :P :(

No, they don't. This year it's been played at less than half the shows. Of their two LA dates, it was only played at one, and not at Coachella, either.

Was it Undestructable? I thought it was! Then someone told me it was Baro Faro. And I was very confused. I was enjoying the music to much to even think about what song they were playing.

It was 85% Baro Foro, and 15% Undestructable. Everyone insists on calling it Undestructable because most people have only heard Gypsy Punks.

For a while, I claimed that they didn't do Undestructable at all. I've since watched the Blue Room clip. They did Baro Foro almost in it's entrity, then segued into maybe one verse of Undestructable, then went back to the Baro Foro 'riff' for the last 4-5 minutes. Eugine was yelling "undestructable!" over the riff, but there was very little of the actual song in that 11 minute clip.

Best closer for The Cure is "Forever", because it makes you feel like you saw something special. They played it as a third encore in Phoenix in '04, and when I check the online setlists later, they were only playing it once every 10 or 15 shows.

Other good closers
Pixies- Gigantic
Pet Shop Boys- Go West
Front 242- Punish Your Machine (pre '98 version- it sucks now.)
Ramones- Today Your Love...Tomorrow The World (though it was usually main set closer, not encore.)
Rammstein- Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen?
Oingo Boingo- Only A Lad
They Might Be Giants- End Of The Tour
Pigface- Suck
Devo- Smart Patrol / Mr DNA (again, this is usually pre-encore closer)
Sinead O'Connor- Troy
Ministry- Stigmata

And though I have not actually seen them live, only on TV...
The Dan Band- You Oughta Know / Que Sera Sera

I also think Pixies "Bone Machine" is a very good call here. Also, I saw a Hole show once where she opened with Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" which was pretty funny.

Jane's Addiction used to open up with "Up The Beach/Ocean Size" just like it was on the record which was pretty awesome. That was a long time ago though.

Saw this, and immediately thought of Arcade Fire's In The Backseat for a closer, but thankfully, thread starter was thinking straight and went right there.

I'm not one of the folks who whines about them moving to bigger crowds or venues or whatever, 'cause I reckon the more the merrier, but... God, I'd fucking love to have seen them play that in a small venue back in the day, complete with funeral procession through the crowd and all. The big-venue crowds just... don't quite get that song, it's a shame.

JMPxTwiIoD4

Metric's Empty has one of the fastest calm-to-frenzy effects I've ever seen on a crowd, it just comes out of nowhere, but as an opener, I think Radiohead's There There wins it on the drums alone...

I'll also agree with many on here, that Interpol opening with Pioneer to the Falls on their 2007 tour was great. Such a great build up in that song and one of my favorite tracks on OLTA. Can't say it was necessarily my favorite though, as Radiohead always rocks the shit when they open... in 2003, the first time I ever saw them live, they opened with "There There" and I was floored. Then in 2006 , when I saw them for the 3rd time, they opened with a 1-2 punch of Airbag and National Anthem. Brilliant!
