Beer Freek #1 - Ola Dubh 30 yr
Tomorrow at The Yard Santa Monica
We are starting a series of rare beer tastings, which will run every 2nd and 4th Wednesday for the next three months. Beer Freek tastings will focus on rare, unusual or impossible to get beers, including Three Floyd's Dark Lord (2009), The Bruery's Black Tuesday, Founders KBS, Kate the Great, et al, and culminate with a tasting that will include one of the holy grails of beer - Narke Stormaktsporter. This Wednesday, we start with a great one on draft:
Harviestoun Ola Dubh Special Reserve 30 - a Scottish old style Ale that is aged in barrels that were used to make 30 yr Highland Park Whiskey.
We'll be serving it by itself, and also as a tasting with:
Oskar Blues Old Chub Scottish Ale (also on draft)
Third Beer TBA soon (but its all gravy after the Ola Dubh!):)

STAY AWAY FROM BLUE MOON.
I cannot emphasize this enough, it's a damn Coors product.
Just went to Fifty Fifty in Truckee and had their Pale Ale, Black IPA and Dark Belgian Strong Ale. That place is simply amazing. Ashman has 19 GABF medals under his belt and it shows. As soon as the poster for Coachella '11 comes out, i'll be opening his 2009 Eclipse Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrells.

In my opinion, Blue Moon is not an awful beer, but it is far from great. If someone brings that to a party rather than Coors Light (or something similar), they should be applauded for at least trying to bring something more microbrew, even if it really isn't.

Agreed. As far as macrobrews go, it's not bad...very drinkable beer. Although apparently you don't drink that in the Carolinas lest you be thought a bit fruity, but I digress.
Ultimately IMO hefe's are generally such drinkable beers by nature that's they're tough to truly mess up. And when it comes to hefe's with huge brand recognition, Blue Moon is it. And I've had plenty worse beers in my life.

good point, it's really just an issue of topicality. maybe someone should make a thread about terrible beers that people think are great when they first venture away from light, domestic beer-pong juice, and into the stage where one feels fancy placing a wedge of fruit on the rim of one's "hefen-weizen."

I didn't mean to sound like a snob or a prick with the Blue Moon comment. I just hate that certain macrobreweries (such as Coors) get away with using synthetic hops and rice in their beers. It's simply not a good product. Much better Wheat style beers out there that aren't too hard to find.
And yes, Bigfoot is awesome. One of the better Barleywine stlye beers out there.

They had one variety, which one it is escapes me, that I wasn't a fan of at all. But yes, mostly a very good beer you can get anywhere.
I'm about to go to Red Lion -- which, for non-LA people, is this German beergarden place that also serves amazing sausages and whatnot. Since it's 80 degrees today, drinking nice beer in the sun sounds awesome about now. Will report on what beers I get, if I can remember.

I live in Maine, which has a pretty awesome microbrewing scene. If you can find them out in the west, I would recommend:
Shipyard
Gritty's
Geary's
Oak Pond (OPB)
Allagash
Sebago
Marshall Wharf
They all have many different varieties. My favorites are the Shipyard Export, a nice clean canadian ale with high drinkability, Gritty's Black fly stout, Marshall Wharf Can't Dog (really doubt you could find this anywhere out of NE, but you never know), Geary's Winter Ale or HSA, OPB Nut Brown, Allagash White Ale, and Sebago Brown ale. There are many, many more that I'm neglecting, but an adventure in Maine micros is well worth the time and money.

Humulus lupulus (Hops) is in the same family as weed...
Family: Cannabaceae
Just look at hops, those little nugglets, mmm... When you pick hops fresh and brew right away (as opposed to drying), all of the essential oils and resin are retained...

My buddy is gonna try to grow some hops this year...
I've thought long and hard about this. Takes a lot of water, which is expensive in SD, and you don't get much yield until the second year. Last year I went to a local hop farm and picked my own and brewed with them and it was awesome. Would be really cool to be able to brew with your own homegrown, but the hops at the local farm were pretty cheap and easy ...

Geno is right and yes i did know that hops are a cousin to pot.
We've brewed a couple batches of Pot Pale Ale, not for commercial purposes obviously. The alpha acids react a bit differently and the weed makes for a much drier ale, so the malts have to be a bit sweeter than most ipas, but I've had a few good batches on pot ale.

I've already apologized to my liver for what's going to happen to it in Februaury (SF Beer Week, Strong Beer Month). I'm (hopefully) going to the following events: opening night gala at the Yerba Buena Center, Double IPA Festival at the Bistro, and most of the events at the Rose & Crown in Palo Alto. I'll also be going back and forth between the 21st Amendment and Magnolia breweries during the month for strong beers. Perhaps we could organize some sort of board meet-up at any of these events or tastings?

So for this years Coachella what kind of canned beer is everyone going to bring? Last year with the help of the message board we found out about Bevmo which they do not have in Oregon or Washington state, and we tried about 12 different beers we had not tried before. I like wheat beers, not too fond of hoppy beers (don't like the bitter taste) and I think my favorite was the Witterkerke white which I had not tried previously. We got some dry ice to extend the ice in the cooler and one of the Witterkerke's was encased in ice the whole weekend until Sunday morning when it was the last beer left and it was icy cold and wonderful! We also brought Sapporo and they counted those big cans as one can of beer so that was a plus coming through security into the camping area. Bigger cans....more beer:-)

I'll be shipping out a package of canned goodies to my California friends before flying out. From the East Coast we have my local brewery, New England Brewing, who does an amazing double IPA called Gandhi-Bot, their normal IPA Sea Hag, and the Elm City Lager which went over really well with our camping neighbors. I also will be getting some canned stuff from my midwest friends, specifically Half Acre in Chicago (daisy cutter pale and gossamer golden) and some Surly from Minnesota if I'm lucky. I'm a hop head so I lean heavily towards the IPA's....but the unfortunate reality is that this isn't the most refreshing choice mid day in the sun.u
We stopped at Bevmo and stocked up on some Dale's pale and Maui Bikini Blonde and Coconut Porter as well, but I hope to be bringing enough of my own out to not have to spend that extra money.

Oh it is. I went to the brewery once with a friend of mine, and it was just two dudes in an old barn. They were totally surprised to have visitors, but they gave us a tour and let us have some free samples. All around it was a good adventure. It became Beer Snob Night after a few pints at the bar last night between a friend of mine and I. He's a dyed-in-the-wool Coors Light drinker but I'm doing my damndest to get him to open his world up a bit. The Sammy Smith and Delirium were for him, the others all mine.

Trippel - I've enjoyed everything New Belgium has ever made, and this is in no way an exception. I wish the store would have had Abbey... now THAT is a stellar beer... but such a great brewery. God bless Colorado beer (except Coors).
Brown Shugga - also a big fan of Lagunitas brewery. This was a bit thick and malty for my preference, but a good, savory sipping beer.
Chambly Noire - I still get sucked into the novelty of corked beers from time to time. Taste-wise, very nice....but I'm not a big fan of the more carbonated mouth-feel. If I want to drink champagne I'll drink champagne.

Had some Klokke Roeland on tap (11.5%). Really outstanding, full bodied beer, quite malty with some floral notes. Very hard to believe that it is so alcoholic.

My buddy broke up with his long-term girlfriend yesterday, so we are getting together with another friend or two and having a beer tasting to cheer him up. Nothing big, just stuff that I found at BevMo. Our choices:

New Belgium Ranger IPA
Porter:
Firestone Walker's Reserve Robust Porter
Maui Brew Coconut Porter

22 ozs will be sent out tomorrow.
In other news 10 beers from colorado to look out for...
Ten beers to keep your eye out for soon
1) Left Hand TNT weizen dopplebock
This German-style beer will be brewed with the smokey Lapsang souchong tea.
2) Avery Margarete
A barrel-aged sour cherry stout is the latest in Avery's series of barrel-aged releases; it should be on shelves shortly.[sold out in less than 30 min]
3) Wynkoop Coupler
An imperial milk stout made for Valentine's Day, using organic cocoa nibs and ancho chiles, then aged in Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey barrels. Debuts February 4.
4) Odell Friek
Available late in February, this will be a sour ale that blends a Kriek with a Framboise.
5) Avery DuganA
A seasonal double IPA returns for the second year in February.
6) Breckenridge 72 Imperial
This double chocolate cream stout is made with milk and dark chocolate from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Durango. Available on draft only.
7) Silverton Bare Ass Brown
While Silverton Brewing has been making this beer for a while, it hasn't been seen on Denver shelves, but a new bottling deal with Fort Collins Brewing should change that.
8) Left Hand Stranger Pale Ale
This beer will replace its Jackman's Pale Ale as a year-round beer.
9) Oskar Blues G'Knight
Okay, it's the same fantastically hoppy beer, but Oskar Blues is changing the name so that is doesn't infringe on Gordon Biersch's trademark. The new cans and a re-release party are scheduled for mid-February.
10) New Belgium Le Terroir and Dunkleweiss
New Belgium plans to produce eight beers for its stellar Lips of Faith series this year. The first two will be Le Terroir, a dry-hopped sour, and Dunkleweiss, a nine percent ABV dark wheat ale "brewed with spices."

Yeah, Lost Abbey's tasting room is a rock's throw from Stone, definitely worth a stop if you have time.
At the Super Bowl party I went to there was 2003 barrel-aged Speedway Stout, 2005 regular Speedway, 2009 barrel-aged Wee Heavy, 2010 Dark Lord, Automatic Brewing's coffee imperial brown, Nugget Nectar, Hopslam, a My Bloody Valentine growler and a few others. Good times.
A list of great stuff I tried yesterday at a Super Bowl Party
I think The Lost Abbey didn’t age well because it was a bit flat
Lost Abbey bottles are always a crapshoot. Sometimes they're great, but a lot of times they're flat, infected and/or overcarbonated. It's best to avoid the bottles and get it on tap when you can ...

The MBV will probably be available there for a couple more weeks, maybe longer, but I'd call ahead if you're thinking of making the trip.
A friend of mine has been saving a growler of last year's MBV -- yes, a year-old growler -- and plans to take it to AleSmith one day this week to compare it to the fresh batch. It doesn't seem like a beer that would age all that well to me, especially in a growler, but I might go up and try it with him.

Rogue released growlers of Dead Guy Ale to Bevmo for NYE, I got one in late January and it was flat, I hope your friends growler kept carbonation for a year...
I find the twist off cap growlers loose carbonation quicker then the pop top style(like Sierra's growlers)...

02-08-2011, 04:41 PM
Growlers should be drank within 48 hours is usually what I'm told.
gazercmh
02-08-2011, 06:17 PM
They generally should be consumed within a few days after you open it (a little longer for a stout or other beer that holds up with low carbonation, but I've had growlers that had been sealed for a couple weeks or more, and kept cold, and were perfectly fine. People will use duct tape on the caps or even dip them in wax to help prevent oxidization and/or loss of carbonation.
That said, a year is nuts. I'll be curious to hear what it's like if I don't end up trying any of it.
And those Rogue growlers are known for sitting around BevMo shelves, warm, for weeks at a time. Not recommended...

What everyone has said about growlers is mostly true. I'd like to add that growlers filled at the time of purchase of course last longer. Those that have pop/clamp lids last longer than screw tops. And very important: try to avoid any temperature change. As soon as you purchase one, keep it in the fridge until you decide to open it. Constant temperature changes cause the CO2 molecules to break apart at a more rapid stage and will make the beer go flat quicker. If you have all of the above, you can a week out of your growler fairly easily.

On Saturday, 12th February - 1st day of our 12th Annual Belgian Beer Festival, we will be honored by the presence of Charles, Owner and Brewmaster of Brouwerij Het Anker. To surprise Charles, we will be tapping a 10-year old Vintage Keg of Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van de Keizer.
...... so, come along and enjoy this fantastic beer. We surprised Charles a year ago, when we tapped one and he couldnt believe how good it was! ... and he did say "Great, I will be able to get my empty keg back, which I haven't seen in 10 years". Just as a final note, the keg went in one night!
So come along and say hi to Charles and enjoy this fantastic beer, we will be tapping at 7.00pm at our Old Town Location - he will be the first one to try it!
See you Saturday!

ps. we will let you know soon, when we will be tapping Pliny the Younger ....

which was pretty damn good...I only had one bottle and went to sleep though because it was after drinking a 1/2 bottle wine.
So I didn't have any of these which i got...

Which i tried at Blue Palms a couple months ago, but have never had out of a bottle yet...
Or this, which i also got, and have been wanting to try...

Bevmo also had bottles of Moylans' Kilt-Lifter, which i was excited about, but didn't buy any yet because I was low on monies.
I am finally going to try some Kyo Chon chicken on Saturday night and have thems wings with some of these beers, YOMS

So I'm going to a beer fest next Saturday, here is the list of beers, looking for recommendations.
The beauty of the beer fest is being able to taste a lot of things you haven't had before. There are a lot on that list that I haven't tried, so I'd have fun there. Just try stuff that sounds like something you'd like, sounds interesting or is a style you don't normally drink. Just pace yourself, drink plenty of water, and don't feel like you have to drink all of every taster.
Of the beers I've had, here are my picks, assuming you haven't had them before:
Ruination IPA - a very nice, very hoppy IPA
Barmy Ale - unique, apricot ale, tasty but high alcohol
Abyss - a world class example of the style (imperial stout)
Hopsquatch Barley Wine 2007
Hopsquatch Barley Wine 2008 - always interesting to taste two vintages side-by-side to see how they age.
Espresso Oak Aged Yeti - good stuff
The Lost Abbey Angel’s Share - an excellent barrel-aged barleywine. delicious.
Port Brewing Co. Mongo Double IPA - nice hoppy IIPA

I had Brassiere Dupont's Saison Dupont last weekend during the Super Bowl and was totally blown away. I don't know that I have ever had a more drinkable beer. Super dry, super clean, super tasty. And it is reasonably priced. I highly recommend it.
I also tried a Flemish Style Sour Ale from Hermitage. I bought it a few weeks ago because it was $3.99 or something, so I figured why not. It was not bad by any stretch, but it was one of the most forgettable beers I've had, and easily the worst sour. There just wasn't a whole lot going on. That said, I wasn't disappointed, because I didn't go in with very high expectations.

Local restaurant has the Younger tomorrow, but they tap their one keg at 11am, so I don't know if they will have any when I get home from work around 6:00. I was supposed to go to Radio Dept. too, but my brother broke his leg and needed surgery a couple of days ago, so I could probably be more helpful around the house. We started off with Harry Eyeball - not bad...
Then vintage 2007 Gnarley Wine followed by: 2008 Gnarley Wine, 2009 Gnarley Wine, 2010 Gnarley Wine, and finished that hectic round with 2011 Gnarley Wine... - Lots of chocolate flavors with hectic hops flavors...
Then on to the hoppy beers with : Maximus , Hops stupid, and SF Infusion (which was amazing, triple IPA with strength, had about 5-6 pints of this and it was soo good...)
I might be missing a beer, fun night in SJ and I found a new place to drink...
*Great tasting and I met a brewer that said any time I was in Petaluma he would hook me up, just need to email him...
Beer week rocks...

after getting hosed on trying to get a pint of the Younger at MiniBar the other night, Toronado came through like a champ. Plenty to go around for all. It was packed, for sure, but the atmosphere was jolly. Bartenders were a riot "Do I here $25 for pint? $30? $45?...." hahahaha. Good spirits all around and great tasting beer!

For $10 you got a glass and two pints and extra pints were $3
I started with Double Daddy, then the Don IIPA, and finished it off with 2 pints of vintage 2009 Old Grandfather Barleywine...
I missed the younger and I'm not mad about it, I'll make sure to find it next year...

Those Lagunitas glasses are cool jars, and I'd be happy if I got one, but I'd rather drink beer from a tulip.
Had a bottle of Mongo last night. First time trying it out of a bottle. I like the tap version better, but it's still good stuff, and nice to be able to have it at home without having to get a growler.
Some friends and I have started using www.untappd.com on our phones. Kinda fun to see what people are drinking. Anyone here use it?

I'm less amazed about how easy it was to get the beer than to hear that they actually used the word 'pint'.
how was the beer? do you think they will have more tonight, or was this a one-night stand?

Had Pliny the Younger tonight, for the third and probably last time this year. It was warmed up a bit since a friend snagged a glass for me before I got there, and tasted great. Also had some year-old Sea Monster cask, which was very nice.
Got a homebrew coffee vanilla porter on tap at home. This was my first time making a porter, first time adding coffee to a beer and first time adding vanilla to a beer. I'm very happy with the results.

Went to bevmo last night to get some beers for the weekend, picked up a sixer of The Hairy Eyeball by Lagunitas nice warmer brown at 9%, and a 22 of Hop Stupid by Lagunitas again.
But when almost leaving I saw they were doing a beer tasting, I always forget to hit up bevmo on fridays, for a $1 I got to try: 21 Amendment's Monks Blood, Stone's Sublime Self-Righteous Ale, Stone's Barleywine, and Stone's Belgium Barleywine.
All of these beers were great and I would recommend any of them...

This story drives me nuts. Surly Brewing wants to build a new brewery with a beer garden/restaurant concept modeled on European beer gardens. $20 million project w/150 new jobs (estimated by Surly.) Fantastic idea - too bad it's illegal under our moronic beverage laws that require a brewery producing more than 3,500 barrels to use ONLY third party distributors to distribute their beer. The MN Licensed Beverage Association (trade/lobbying group) OPPOSES changing the rule this because it would give Surly an unfair advantage.

edit: I decided instead of whining here I should write my state representatives, and just did so. I feel better.

^ Those laws are absolutely fucking ridiculous. We have major problems with that in Nevada. Fucking Nevada of all places, where almost anything is legal. My brewery has 3 locations but only brews from one site. Every day, we ship kegs to the other locations. Because we don't go through a third party to distribute our OWN beer to our OWN locations, it's technically illegal.
Of course Bev companies oppose changing the law, cause it favors distributors who drive up prices. Distributors make sense in getting rare or foreign products to the states. Or in the sense of a large company like Absolut distributing their shit to every bar in the world. But for the most part, its preventing local/small microbreweries from getting their product out to any place outside of their own house.

hmmm....you can take Metro Link to downtown Burbank station which is like a mile or so from there...or Metro Red Line to North Hollywood, which is like 3 or 4 miles away. Either way if you want to do it i could probably pick you up from either station.

Tj's sells a lager called Simpler Times and at 6.7% ABV is well
Worth the 2.99/sixer price tag. Especially at near slush in the

So, as many of you know, I work at a brewery. It's always painful to have people come in and ask for Coors or Bud or be a dipshit like that.
But last night, we had a customer get very upset that we didn't have Ole English. That's right, he wanted a forty of Ol E. Never ceases to amaze me....

I feel like the craft beer industry is moving at a blinding pace. Here in Denver its turning me into a lush so much good beer I cant keep up.
Just Tonight.....
Avery Brewing will release the 2011 version (batch #13) of The Maharaja Imperial IPA -- one of the most sought-after beers in its collection -- at 6 p.m. with a party at the Boulder taproom, 5763 Arapahoe Avenue. Unlike some other Avery releases, there should be plenty of this beer to go around, both on tap and in bottles.
Dry Dock Brewery Firkin Friday! Strawberry Dirty Blonde
Our Cocoa Nib beer with Strawberries!
But Breckenridge has also been honoring its two-decade history over the past year -- something that culminated with the tapping of Twenty, a limited-edition draft-only ESB that was aged in Stranahan's whiskey barrels for five months.
Also on tap at its breweries and restaurants: 72 Imperial, a chocolate stout made with dark chocolate from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
Tomorrow is a younger tapping.

SURLY GIVES A DAMN
Surly Gives a Damn is the public-spirited side of Surly.
Our mission is to “tap” the passion and good will shared amongst Surly Nation to give back and to support our community. We follow through with this mission in two ways; firstly with donations of Surly beer and swag to local businesses and charitable organizations in need. Secondly, we provide ongoing opportunities for our volunteers to participate in Service Projects throughout the year...And for those wondering, typically each event concludes with a "Surly on the house" at a local establishment that sells Surly. Exact locations will be determined the closer we get to the event.
