And, if any of y'all are up in Mammoth during the 1st or 3rd Wednesday of any given month, go to the Mammoth Brewing Co. tasting room and they do 1/2 off growlers.
Where is the tasting room?

I'm trying to get my bosses to pay for part of my time at GABF. Otherwise, don't know if I can make it this year.
GB, Buckbean sucks major major major balls. Nice guys who run the place and I have nothing against them, but the beer is complete garbage. The Black Noddy (Schwarzbier) somehow won a medal at the GABF, but its mediocre at best. And the Orange Blossom is hands down my least favorite beer of all time. I'd rather drink Bud Light Lime. Sorry you had to experience that, man.

Rogue has 2 Morimoto beers, one comes in a really cool bottle with a swing top like grolsch. I just tried a beer rogue just started making called a John John Ale. It's a series of beers i believe are all going to be called John John Ales. The brewmaster at Rogue is named John and he partnered up with a bremaster from another brewery named john for this series, thus the name John John Ale. It was a pretty good Pale Ale, not the best that i've had but it was good. I also bought a 6 pack of Flying Dogs seasonal beer called the Raging Bitch ale, and also the Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale but have yet to try them.

Yeah, I grew up 20 minutes south of Mammoth, so I've been going to this fest for over 10 years. They brewed an Imperial Stout for the fest this year and it's insanely rich and coffee-like. The 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month they do half off growlers at the brewery, so that's why I went today. I got the Charleywine and 395 IPA because I wanted to DRINK!

They have an anniversary porter they made that's just called Sierra. It was really full bodied and good.
Sam Adams has rolled out some potential new beers every year at the beer fest and let people vote on which one they should produce. Last year the Noble Pils was the winner, and this year I'm really hoping they produce the American Rye. It was fantastically malty and full bodied. Great beer.
Also, Russian River had Hopfather IPA and Little White Lie belgian white, which were both delicious.

Oh I forgot to mention that we got a bottle of the Sofie as well. Very sweet.
And Zack, the Pere Jaques was good, if not very typical of that style for Belgian ales. I had quite a few different beers by the time I got to it so i don't have a lot to say specifically about it, but it's very drinkable.

Obviously Deschutes is well known for their beers and i consider that brewery to be one of the breweries that is fairly easy to find and always a safe bet when you have few other choices (such as Stone, Widmer, Sierra Nevada, etc) But I love their Twilight Summer Ale. It has amarillo hops (one of my fav hops) and is mild yet got a great mouthfeel and finish. Kind of a straw taste to balance the citrus and floral notes. Anyway, as Summer begins its finish, this is a great beer for the late evening.

Oh, and Sierra Nevada's Tumbler is damn good.
Anyone tasting IBAs lately??? Stands for India Black Ale. They're been around for awhile, but for the first time ever this year, the GABF is creating a whole new category for this style of beer. A few breweries are doing them, mine just put ours on tap earlier today. Pretty damn good. Flavors are varied amongst different breweries, but nice citrus and floral aromas, but opaque and dark in color. Some have a roasted and malty quality while other dont. Anyway, check 'em out, they're interesting.

I just got a bunch from my cousin who's niece and nephew own Russian River. I haven't opened the Pliny cuz I'm not a big hops fan, but I drank several of the Blind Pig and those are The Shit. Maybe I'll just give all the Pliny away.

odd are if u like Blind Pig(IPA) your going to like Elder(DIPA).Elder is one of those beers that made me rethink hoppy beers. Now I've never seen to buy Blind Pig because Elder is stocked right to it and their both the same price, so i've never had it
Deschutes is a great staple beer brewery and I just had their Hops in the dark(Tap,Black India Pale Ale) on wednesday before My Morning Jacket.Great stuff.
The difference between Bottle and tap is that to get beer of the tap will be pressurized with c02 , while a bottle can go over or under Carbonization, sun damage and etc .
by the way I'm beginning to think Lost Abbey is one of my more favorite breweries for being different , like ginger saison which is called Red barn

That beer is phenomenal either way. Chances are, if it tastes like shit from the bottle, it's gone through too many extreme temperature changes and/or been exposed to too much light. Also keep in mind that high IBU beers (such as Pliny) don't hold up real well over time. The alpha acids in hops begin to break down and can eventually lead to a poor tasting beer.
Yeah, Hop in the Dark is damn good too. That's been on tap at a few beer bars in Reno lately.

I got this from the Bruery today
BLACK TUESDAY
2010 RELEASE AND CELEBRATION
Last year we released a beer on the final Tuesday of October that shook the beer community. Black Tuesday, our barrel aged stout, created quite a stir at our humble brewery, amassing an unexpected response from craft beer lovers around the nation. It didn't come as a huge surprise that people were in love with our deep, dark, rich and nearly 20% abv beer that ages in bourbon barrels for well over a year, but the instantaneous success of the beer was definitely a shock. We thank you for that response and we are excited for Black Tuesday to come again.
This year, in order to quell the long line around our facilities and refrain from having numerous people driving hundreds of miles to The Bruery just to walk away empty handed, we are changing the way we run our Black Tuesday release event, hopefully to the benefit of everyone. Please read the details below CAREFULLY and you just might find yourself at a fantastic event on the final Tuesday of October, celebrating craft beer, the Great and the New Recession, and of course, The Bruery's Black Tuesday.
If you didn't make it out last year, please check our website for a video of what the evening was like, you can see it here: http://www.thebruery.com/beers/blacktuesday.html
Without further ado...the details:
On September 1st, tickets to our Black Tuesday release party will be available for purchase online. The party will take place on October 26th in 2 sessions; 5:30 to 7:30 pm and 8 to 10 pm.
There are three ticket levels, each accompanied by 1 to 3 bottles of Black Tuesday. They will be on sale on our website www.brueryprovisions.com. We do anticipate these tickets selling out quickly. The levels are as follows:
Level 1: $50; includes 1 bottle of Black Tuesday
Level 2: $80; includes 2 bottles of Black Tuesday
Level 3: $110; includes 3 bottles of Black Tuesday
Each ticket includes:
⁃ 1 Bruery logo glass
⁃ 3 “Black Tuesday” tickets for use on your choice of Black Tuesday or cask conditioned Chocolate Rain or Cherry Chocolate Rain
⁃ 5 additional tickets for other available beers
⁃ Artisan cheese and chocolate pairings
A few rules about ticket purchases:
⁃ The bottles that accompany each ticket MUST BE PICKED UP AT THE PARTY. They will not be held beyond the event
⁃ Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable
⁃ ONE TICKET will be allowed per person. Additional purchases will be refunded and tickets will be put back on sale
⁃ Valid identification will be required and must match the shipping address on the order.
⁃ Tickets will not be shipped; the event will be will call only so valid identification will be required at the door
⁃ IF YOU'RE GIFTING THESE TICKETS, the person who will be attending must be listed on the order as the shipping address
Once tickets to the Black Tuesday release party are sold out, additional bottles of Black Tuesday will go on sale on www.thebrueryprovisions.com on October 27th at 9 am.
All bottles obtained through sales unaccompanied by a ticket will be available for pickup on November 5th or after at The Bruery Provisions location in Old Towne Orange, CA. They will not be available for pickup at The Bruery's Tasting Room.
Cheers,
Your friends at The Bruery

GREAT All CA draft selection that changes daily.
Highlights for me were the Bruery's Autumn Maple (personal recommendation by getbetter) and Moylan's Kilt Lifter. the Kilt Lifter is so fucking good, and at 8%ABV a whole pint really packs a punch. (the Autumn is 11% but they only serve the stuff over 10% in small snifters). I hope they get it back because the bartender said the keg was probably going to be empty today. it was really delicious.
I also tried the Eagle Rock Populist and Hangar 24 IPAs, both of which were good as well.

When NeutralHotelMilk took me home after my car when missing last night.I opened a bottle of this Miles Davis Bitches Brew a Dogfish Head beer dedication to the 40th Anniversary Released of the album.
We just did the test batch our pub. It is a threaded beer which means multiple primary fermentations and then you blend them together from multiple threads. It is a blend of Tej, which is the native African beer which is actually honey beer. They use gesho root because hops don't grow in Africa and gesho is the bittering component that counterbalances the sweetness of the honey. That's one thread. Three threads is an imperial stout with Muscovado sugar. Post-fermentation, we'll blend those together to make Bitches' Brew and that will come out in August.

The fact that Great Basin Brewery won this year with a Lemon Wheat beer under the EXPERIMENTAL category is laughable. That's about as generic a beer as you can think of. So many other award winning beers have been horribly mediocre.
I still think it's an awesome fest and the chance to drink that many good beers from across the nation is awesome. I am just really beginning to question the judging after years of questionable calls. They seem to be about as accurate of judging beers as the academy awards are at judging movies; but at least better than the grammys are at judging music.

Any suggestions for a beer that will go nicely with pulled pork sandwiches? It is supposed to be warm in SF this Saturday and my friend is having a gathering. Try keeping your glasses at room temperature. That will let the flavors come out and the beer will taste better. Unless you're drinking Coors light or something like that. Then you want it as cold as possible so you don't have to actually taste it.

It's illegal to ship beer through the postal service. It's better to go through UPS or FedEx. It's against their policies, but not the law. They don't usually ask what you're shipping, especially if you print out the label at home and just go there to drop the box off, but if they do ask, you could say olive oil or something. I've heard of some people saying they're sending live yeast samples, which is kind of true.
It's also best to ship on a Monday so the box won't sit in some hot (or cold, if it's winter time) location over a weekend.

Backhand him. Speaking of which. My uncle has started brewing his own beer. It is honestly pretty good. What isn't good is how it has turned him into a pretentious beer snob fuckhead. My uncle got me into good beer, so it bums me out when I buy something good and he drops one of his stock lines:
1. "You paid (x amount) for that!? I can brew a whole gallon for $32!"
2. "This is alright. But my (insert one of his beers) is one of the best I have ever tasted."
There are more, I can't think of them right now. But yeah. Drives me nuts. And while his beers have good flavor, he needs to start working on things like the consistency of the beer itself. All of them have the same watery consistency, whether it is his Double IPA, his Honey Mead or his Barleywine. Those kind of things are what separate the master craftsmen from the homebrewers.

I had a Surly Wet last night and liked it very much. Papa's (North Mpls) has a good selection of Surly, and the cheese steak wasn't bad either.
I don't pretend to know what this means:
2,400 lbs of hops picked freshly in oregon and shipped to Minnesota immediately. We brewed this beer three days later. This is a hop forward beer, dry with subdued malt flavors.
STYLE: West Coast India Pale Ale
MALT: 2-Row, Crystal Crystal
WET HOPS: Citra, Simcoe
BITTERING HOPS: Columbus
YEAST: English Ale
OG: 17º Plato
ABV: 7.5% v/v
COLOR: 6 ºSRM
IBU: 90
AVAILABILITY: October
gazercmh
10-29-2010, 08:16 AM
I don't pretend to know what this means:
Most beers are made using hops that have been dried and pelletized. "Wet hop" or "fresh hop" or "harvest" beers are made using hops that are freshly picked, typically within 48 hours after they've been taken off the vine. The wet hop beers will have a different kind of hop character, typically a little more earthy and often quite delicious. But hops are only harvested once a year, in the late summer/early fall, so you can only make wet hop beers once a year. (Technically twice a year if you also use hops harvested in the southern hemisphere, as those harvest in the spring. Sierra Nevada releases a "Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale.")
I picked some Cascade hops a couple months ago and used them to brew a session ale. It was a ton of fun and the beer turned out great. I look forward to doing it again next year.
MarkO
10-29-2010, 08:36 AM
Indeed. The Hop Harvest I mentioned above is a wet hopped beer with a very limited release.

They're $5.88 /6 at the cheapest place here so that price is not out of line.

It's a great DIPA but you should have a taster of several different double IPAs
Personally i like
http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/46463.jpg
more than Elder. In my beer notes i mark down smells like very potent pot,yet this was a very fresh keg of Blue Dot.Several months later i pick up a bottle and it must of not been fresh because i couldn't smell it.One thing that's important in IPAs is how fresh they are.
Three Floyds Dreadnaught Imperial IPA is another great DIPA, yet very hard to find since u can't get it west of the mississippi very easily.

Eh, I told him we would share it. I can find another bottle at Perry's if need be. Plus, beers with coffee tend to annihilate my stomach, so sharing should help cushion the blow.

I am SUCH a fucking idiot. I've lived in my apartment for over a year now, and until today had NO idea that this liquor store less than a mile away had this incredible selection of beer. Like, a ton of room temperature quality stuff and two whole refrigerators as well.
I picked up these two just a bit ago, I've never tried either:

Yeah i did spent a shitload of money on beer but some of it is for my bday. The scarier part is I'm going end up probably spending another $60 on beer if I'm not careful.I'm either going down to the brewer's guild festival $65 all you can drink and eat at this resort in SD or go to Stuffed Sandwiches and have a vertical tasting of Bigfoot Barelywine from 1990 and up.
On stone epic 10:10:10 :I didn't like it because they used two different wine grapes and i didn't like that flavor it gives.
On Dogfish heads Bitches Brew which we have talked about alot already on this thread I fucking love the concept of it three different types of stouts mixed together with a traditional African mead. Especially because it taste so god damn good.
Drinkey if u like IPAs Tony's darts has Pizza Port's Mongo IPA .Interesting fact that you will like is Mongo was the Brew cat of Pizza Port/Lost Abbey.
edit: Going to Stuffed Sandwiches for an early bday lunch.I'm going buy this vertical barely wine six pack of bigfoot barley wine from 1990 and up.Then probably host a tasting tommorrow for my bday or tonight.

It makes me sad that the local Bevmo, with their average selection, is pretty much the only place I can find microbrewed beers in my town.
Every time I go there I find myself staring at Dogfish head's Midas Touch Ale, but I never get it, choosing instead to go with a new IPA. How is it? Am I missing out on anything?

Tonight was the Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary celebration at Pete's Brass Rail in Danville. I hung out with some friends and sampled quite a few of their brews I had never heard of before. I had:
Hoptimum (Double IPA)
Knightro ESB
Westnatte Lupulus (Belgian IPA)
Blonde Ale
I also had sips of some other ones that I can't remember. One was a Grand Cru. Anyway, successful evening. Gotta love it.

http://beernews.org/2010/11/brewers-association-to-petition-ttb-to-allow-for-coffee-chocolate-tea-in-beer/
Here’s the Brewers Association’s official response to today’s news that the FDA will rule alcoholic drinks with caffeine added as unsafe. The press release below mentions only the TTB, not the FDA, by name. The TTB is the regulatory agency for alcohol in the U.S. and will ultimately enforce any rulings that come down on this subject. I’m really not sure whether this is just a precaution or if this is something that craft beer drinkers have to worry about…anyway, here is the release that was sent out in the last hour or so.
(Boulder, CO) – The Brewers Association announces today that it will formally petition the U.S. Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to conduct rulemaking on alcoholic energy drinks.
The petition seeks to disallow synthetic and pure caffeine additions to alcohol beverages, but allow incidental caffeine from ingredients that have a long tradition in brewing, such as coffee, chocolate and tea. The petition seeks to clarify that coffee, chocolate, herbs, spices, seeds and fruit are ingredients that should remain available to brewers to make beers for responsible enjoyment by beer drinkers.
Certain alcoholic energy drinks have received significant negative attention from state attorneys general, public health groups and concerned citizens. Many states are taking action this fall before the federal government has responded, leaving a patchwork of different regulatory wording, all with the same intention. The goal of this federal petition is to provide a clear and consistent national standard to assist state-based rulemaking under the 21st Amendment. This standard would remove the products of concern from shelves without creating unintended damage to the hundreds of craft brewers who, for many years, have been using traditional ingredients like coffee, tea and chocolate to responsibly craft interesting and flavorful beers.
Brewers Association President Charlie Papazian stated, “Responsible brewers have successfully used coffee, chocolate and tea to add interesting flavor and complexity to their beers for decades. In fact, the Aztecs brewed a corn, honey and chili-based beer that contained cocoa. Many craft brewers build on these traditions today using coffee, tea and chocolate. On the other hand, the addition of artificial caffeine not from a natural ingredient source has no heritage or tradition in brewing. We support a ban on the direct addition of caffeine.” The Brewers Association invites TTB to open up public comment and rulemaking on whether these products are appropriate for responsible consumption.
