That's funny. There's just something about La Chouffe's taste that I can't get enough of. I have a tradition of drinking a 750 of it every Sunday as my first beer during NFL Sunday Ticket time. Have you tried The Bruery's Melange 1 and 3. They are a combo of Oude Tart and Black Tuesday that works surprisingly well.
The Guy who makes the beer is really traditional about spending years on one style of beer while The Bruery coming out with weird beer all the time.He went on a rant about how mikkeller is a gimmick to the Americans.

I took a trip to the Alpine Brewery today. This place is hop head heaven! They have a number of different offerings that are up there with the best IPAs I've ever had. If you got the time, it's worth making the trip out there. 4 pints and and order of fries were only $16 so its easy on the wallet too.
Last time I went to Alpine was the first time in my life that I've actually blacked out from drinking too much. I pride myself on pacing, and too many 12-18% beers put me over the top. Found out the next day that I was pestering the owner about how shitty the band was that night and how much better my shitty band was than them. Yikes!! Great beer selection there btw.

Just finished a whole bottle of this:

Mongo is great as well, very underrated. As snobby as this may sound, I really think Pliny is overrated in the sense that there are other IPAs readily available in California that are just as good. Don't get me wrong, Pliny is amazing, but there is a lot of stuff that is equally as amazing that doesn't get the same attention.

Yesterday afternoon I started my first batch of homebrew. I boiled the wort and stuck it in the fermenter. I made a few mistakes during my first run so I was a little worried, but I just checked the fermenter and the airlock is bubbling which means active fermentation! Woo hoo!

My favorite brewery at the moment is Indigo Imp out of Cleveland Ohio. Their flagship is Blonde Bombshell (that has a kind of caramel taste to it). I was lucky enough to have a 12 pack for Christmas. My dad bought me a 6er of Gatekeeper which is kinda like a chocolate stout with a mocha aftertaste. He also got me a sixer of Jester also which is a bit of a spicy ale. Bother excellent gifts. Check out their brewery online. I'm buying a shirt when I get around to it.

I got to try King Henry from Goose Island on Sunday. It was the best beer I've had in some time. Also had some Heady Topper, which was very nice for a non-California IPA.
On the downside, I had a bottle of 2010 bourbon barrel aged Old Guardian, and it was pretty disappointing. There was virtually no barrel characteristic to it. It really tasted like plain Old Guardian, which is fine but not worth $25 for 500ml.

Congrats man, drinking your first batch will be an awesome moment (as long as it turned out decently).
Anyone else going to Alpine on Friday to get some of this?

I don't know if I'll go all the way out to Alpine for the Expo release, but at the very least I'll go to Toronado for a pour. That beer is a little inconsistent. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes it's so-so.

So I'm sure it's been posted before but where can I find Pliny the Elder? I went to BevMo! in SLO but they didn't have it...instead I got Lost Abbey Judgement Day, Rogue Yellow Snow IPA, Rogue Chocolate Stout, and a six pack of the coconut Kona beer.

That's your best bet, not sure if they have distribution in SLO though. BevMo doesn't carry any Russian River stuff btw (at least not in San Diego).

Russian River doesn't distribute to BevMo because 90% of their beer is warm. I guess BevMo owners have done trades with people and sold Pliny in their store but they are not authorized to...

It did turn out decent! It came out like a really mild Sam Adams. I went to the LHBS and asked them what recipe should I try for my first batch, and this is what they recommended. So 3 weeks in the fermenter, then 2 weeks bottle conditioning=cracked on Super Bowl Sunday! I think it could use another week bottle conditioning though. Here's what it looks like:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420529_2683087924909_1487686430_32097781_164346669 9_n.jpg
I named it the Panda Pale Ale after one of our daughter's favorite toys, a stuffed panda. I decided that subsequent batches will all be named after her different toys. I've got a Hefe in the primary right now, and after I bottle that I plan on trying a Pliny Clone. Here's a pretty interesting article I found from Vinny at Russian River with the recipe and tips on brewing, it's a pretty good read even if you don't homebrew:

In other news, i bought a 6 pack of Golden Road's Point The Way IPA in cans last week. I think it's better than on tap surprisingly. It's a very mild IPA and very drinkable, but it's a bit pricey at $12/6pk for a 5.2% beer. I like that they're 16oz cans though.

Double IPA tastings crack me up. After a few, the alpha acids are so high, they destroy your pallet and the subtleties are unnoticeable. But keeping in theme, I did a non American IPA tasting at my place a few weeks ago. Many were good, none were bad, but few stood out. Sorry I haven't been keeping up on this thread like I should, but any good thoughts on hoppy, non-American beers that are balanced??

I also tried Golden Road's brown ale. I really liked it: it was darker in flavor than the usual malty brown. It had a coffee undertone and some really good charcoal burn to it.

Triple Voodoo Inception Belgian Style Ale - 8% ABV
Mythical Sensation in a Glass
Triple Voodoo Inception Belgian Style Ale is not brewed in traditional Belgian style like traditional Trappist ales. Inception is bright and clear with a sharp alcohol note in the beginning and an added twist of black currant in the center of the flavor profile. The beer finishes clean and has a solid malty backbone. This unique flavor profile was achieved using a special hop varietal. The high hop load also makes it reminiscent of an IPA and gives it that unique California characteristics.

Any beers I should be on the lookout for from these vendors? Most are bringing mostly strong selections.
You are going to get so drunk. Jealous. I'm sure all of the Colorado breweries left hand, Odell's great divide, new Belgium will have their bourbon/rye cask beers from stranahans. If you get a chance to try the yeti or coco mole from great divide and new Belgium do it.
Oscar blues will have their new deviant Beer there that I hear is pretty good.

Had a little tasting with some friends Saturday night. Among the highlights
Bruery - Filmishmish, a sour apricot beer that was damn good, almost as good as
Cantillon - Fou' Foune, the king of sour apricot beers
Ithaca - LeBleu
Bruery - Mother Funker. A lot better than I expected, especially for the price. I hope I can get more of this.
AleSmith - Barrel Aged Old Numbskull, 2006 - delicious
Bruery - Oui Oui. A little too wine-like for me
Cantillon - Classic Gueuze. always good
Bruery - ISO:FT kinda disappointing
Fulton - Worthy Adversary, a growler of a coffee RIS. It was good but the growler was kinda flat
Bruery - Melange No. 1 - nice chocolate cherry flavor, but as it warmed up it started to taste more like cough syrup

Same here; not going since we have to pay $50.00 on top of the membership fee.

Yeah, last year was a mess but I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and see if they improved it. $50 is a lot, but god damn I love their Oude Tart, Black Tuesday, and Chocolate Rain. I'm gonna hit the tasting til 7:00 and then head over and see Puscifer in Riverside. Should be a great St. Patty's day.

breweries are popping up all over the central Texas area. These guys are by far my favorite. I have been obsessed with them lately. Everything they do goes through a secondary fermentation in the bottle giving it a rich mouthfeel and a super thick head.

I had The Bruery's Humulus Lager and Lips of Faith Cocoa Mole. The latter was great, chocolate with hints of vanilla and spicy.

I'm drinking a Central Water's double IPA called Illumination. Pretty solid, 9.0, tastes a little more like grass clippings than I would like. 4 pack of 12 oz bottles are 9.99, worth trying.
