Radiohead. None of the headliners we've had since then are in the same league, not even the good ones.

2008 could top 2004 if they get Radiohead, Portishead, and someone else amazing, like David Bowie or My Bloody Valentine.

I am with you on that, but still 2004 pretty much is the equivelant of the best line up top to bottom out of all of them. Also, I mean it sold out waaay early. And of course, yes we had this year selling out in a millisecond, but at that point it was insane.

unfortunately i did not attend in 99. i'm sure that if i did attend, it may have edged out 04. but i can only go by my own personal experiences.

2001 is the "lost" year, nobody ever mentions it and what performances do people even really point at that year that stuck out? Not to say it sucked but it was great for being one day, thats all. 2004 > all the others, we even made a poll and it won. Bet you if we added 2007 to it, it still wins. The Top 3 on day 1 rule everyones face.

actually I was there in 2001.. and saw one of the best live shows ever..
St. Germain played the outdoor stage at sunset and blew everyone away..

for anyone that really knows their dance music, 2001 is a wet dream that will never happen again.

And Mogwai and Broken Social Scene (with EMILY HAINES...why see BSS without her or Feist, seriously) and Beck and Air and pre-Plans Death Cab (too bad by the time I got out of the Beck clusterfuck their set was almost finished). Oh, and Wilco dropped out because Jeff Tweedy fails at life. And The Rapture is a negative.

2004 was the first Coachella I attended, so that biases my opinion a bit. However, I still rate it as the best Coachella I've attended (I had tickets for '05 and '07 and had to cancel), and it's also the reason I've bought tickets every year since.

I'm not downplaying the strength of other line-ups, but in 2004, in addition to Radiohead, The Motherfucking Pixies, and The Cure, I got to see the Black Keys for the first time, and also got to witness that Air sunset performance...Had I been able to attend this year, 2004 might have been knocked from the top spot...as it is, 2004 ruled.

why wasnt aphex twin there in 01?

oh, and any festival that has Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Air, Flaming Lips, Crystal Method, LCD Soundsystem, 2 Many DJs, and Adam Freeland is well worth a trip across the country.

I would kill to see kraftwerk while they are still around.

Lost year? No way! It was my 1st year and the first show Sigur Ros ever played in the US or North America period. I was very lucky to see them since I really didn't know anything about them at the time. What a mind blowing experience...especially when your are not expecting it..

Having been to ever Coachella, bar 1999, I would have to somewhat agree. Only because I thought this year's line up was the strongest since 2004 and the fact that Bjork put on such a amazing perfromance (Though Radiohead still top her simply because they put on a longer show..20 songs vs. Bjork's 16). But I do agree NO headliner has yet to top that perfromance...period..I would say only Bjork comes close.. And no one has beaten that one two punch or the Pixies and Radiohead...simply hasn't been done yet...though I do think that this year really gave 2004 a run for it's money and I would ever saw that it might have topped 2004. 3 days and a really strong line up despite having 3 repeat headliners...

He dropped out at the last minute and sent in Squarepusher to cover...who knows? Richard D James is a fickle guy and might have just dropped out because he felt like it...would be amazing to see him next year..and it wouldn't be too crazy to say he could headline the main stage..he has done it at Fuji Rock and at a few festivals in Europe..

I think 2005 gets overlooked alot because it had to follow up 2004...I thought at first that the line up was weak but because of perfromances by Coldplay, M.I.A., NIN, Bauhaus and Arcade Fire. It was definately Epic....In fact it is my fav year after 2004 and 2007. And despite what people think I thought Coldplay owned it...Plus I discovered Arcade Fire that year :)

2004 was definitely my favourite Coachella so far. Then 2006, then 2005, and then 2007.

I have high hopes for 2008. These bands all need to be on the lineup:

-Radiohead
-The Verve
-Oasis (if they have new material ready on time, but it seems unlikely... but an Oasis / Verve lineup would be incredible)
-Aphex Twin
-My Bloody Valentine
-Elbow
-Doves
-Guillemots
-65daysofstatic
-The Pistolas
