I love ragging on the Arizona Republic. the worst major metropolitan daily newspaper I've seen.

In today's sports section, we have a banner (pointing to an article on page 2) which says that while it's unlikely the Suns will trade for Kobe, it's not an impossibility -- "don't count it out just yet".

Just below that on page 1 is a different article on the Suns' trade possiblities, and it says the Lakers would move back to Minneapolis before trading Kobe to the Suns.

I guess the page editor called in sick yesterday.

I remember being stuck in a thunderstorm at Springfest out at COMPTON TERRACE (remember that hole?) in 1993. I miss Nita's. Even the second one that was at that horrible steakhouse.

The old Nita's was (by far) my favorite place to catch live music in phx. small, dark, dingy, seedy and cramped. It was heaven. $3 guinness on tap and soft couches if you got there early. I saw Whiskeytown there. and Neko Case. and Victoria Williams, twice, once with Howe Gelb opening (I was standing 5 feet away when Mark Olson went up and introduced himself to Howe). Once I went for a Jay Farrar/Brian Henneman solo acoustic twin bill, but it was sold out, and no one was selling, so I stood out in the parking lot to listen. Actually met Henneman walking from the trailer in the parking lot to the club, he couldn't or wouldn't get me in though.

The new Nita's didn't last long, but Sigur Ros did play there once.

'International schools' idea dies; legislators describe plan as un-American
Pat Kossan
The Arizona Republic
Jun. 20, 2007 12:00 AM

Everyone agrees: The world is shrinking.

Businesses need people skilled in world languages and economics. The government has gaping holes in diplomacy and intelligence. Universities are begging for more students with sophisticated learning.

It all gives credence to a bill in the Arizona Legislature to create international schools to help make students globally competitive.

But, in the end, the bill died. As its supporters learned, "international" is a dirty word among some at the Capitol.

Key leaders there suggested the bill was un-American and part of a slippery slope to a U.N. takeover and the end of U.S. sovereignty.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Mark Anderson, R-Mesa, would have put three K-12 schools in the northern, central and southern parts of the state, where kids would begin a second language in kindergarten, and set up new international programs at seven high schools. Big business and universities pledged to partner with the schools. First-year costs would have been $2.3 million, or less than 0.02 percent of the proposed state budget.

Wisconsin, Kansas and Ohio have launched similar programs.

The bill took some twists and turns:

• Some Arizona legislators were so opposed to the bill that supporters changed the name from international schools to American competitiveness project schools to appease them.

That didn't sway Sen. Ron Gould, a Lake Havasu City Republican.

"What I'm assuming is that they changed the name, trying to get us to be less objectionable, as if, you know, a rose by any other name is not as sweet," said Gould, a member of the Senate's K-12 Education Committee. "There's a lot of us here who are not internationalists. These schools actually have kind of a United Nations flavor to them, and we're actually into educating Americans into Americanism, not internationalism."

• Sen. Karen Johnson, a Mesa Republican and chairwoman of the K-12 Education Committee, never let the proposal out of committee. Johnson instead brought in a professor from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn., to educate lawmakers on the dangers of a popular international studies program, the International Baccalaureate. The 37-year-old high school program offers rigorous courses and diploma programs in schools worldwide, including 759 in the United States and 12 in Arizona. Its goals are intercultural understanding, community service and preparation for university work.

"The International Baccalaureate is un-American," Allen Quist, who served in the Minnesota Legislature in the 1980s and ran for Minnesota governor as a Republican in 1994, said in a phone interview. He said that International Baccalaureate's links to the United Nations are disturbing and that its sense of right and wrong is ambiguous.

It teaches students to see the American system of government as one of many, not as the only one that protects universal and God-given rights to property, to bear arms and free speech, Quist said.

• To get around Johnson, supporters took the proposal to the Senate's Higher Education Committee. The proposal eventually reached the House Appropriations Committee, which helps decide what bills get funded and how much. There, it ran into Rep. Russell Pearce, a Mesa Republican. Pearce recalled this week that his research on international schools in general found them to be dangerous, and he suggested their agenda was tied to the U.N., not America.

"Our schools ought to be focusing on education that we, as Americans, espouse," Pearce said. "We ought to concentrate on United States history and United States heroes."

So the bill did not survive its first round in the Legislature. Instead, a measure was put in the state budget authorizing Tom Horne, Arizona superintendent of public instruction, to seek private donations for such a program. Horne said he didn't need the authorization and plans to bring the proposal back for state funding next year. In the meantime, he'll look for private and federal grants to move the project ahead.

Horne has some experienced allies, including Richard Mackney, a 1977 graduate of the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale who has spent 30 years in international business, mostly with Goodrich Corp. He volunteered to help the Arizona Department of Education develop the schools proposal.

Like principals, teachers and students in international studies, he was surprised at some lawmakers' attitudes.

The value of the proposal is that average students could start in kindergarten learning a world language and preparing to enter rigorous international studies, he said.

Universities and businesses have promised to use these Arizona schools as laboratories for school reform, sending scholars to help teachers and creating internships to help students build careers. Then, businesses such as Goodrich, Intel and American Express could find executives they need in Arizona and not look elsewhere, he said.

"Then, we say, 'Hey, Arizona state Senate, what were you talking about, that this internationalism destroys Arizona?' " Mackney said. " 'We've just shown you that you were wrong.' "

I'm not even sure what to say about that article-and the obviously stupid motherfuckers that have been elected to run our state's legislature.....typical paranoid right-wing Mesa Mormon conservatives. "Key leaders there suggested the bill was un-American and part of a slippery slope to a U.N. takeover and the end of U.S. sovereignty." Can they seriously be that stupid?

One thing I will say is that I don't understand why they would have introduced a bill such as that in the first place. From what I have gathered, it's very easy to start a charter school in this state. Charter schools DO get some state funding. And, if they have lots of donations being offered, those monies should cover a lot of their costs.

My daughter goes to a very liberal-arts oriented preperatory academy. Their focus is more on literature, art, history, community service, language, etc. She's taking her second year of Latin-which is a requirement for that school (a foreign language every year). Unamerican? No. Unconventional? A little. But 93% of the kids that graduate from that jr high/high school go to college. Quite above the average.

They're trying to be strategic in their expansion, so I wouldn't be suprised if they are all over the valley by the time your kid hits 7th grade.

There's some inconveniences since it's a charter school-no P.E. (so they are required to participate in one team sport a year-which costs money), no cafeteria so they have to bring their own lunch (although they have microwaves in their student union) but the trade off is a much better, well rounded education. No one slips through the cracks there-it's practically impossible. I've been really impressed with them, and I'm a pretty tough critic.

My sister has both of her girls in karate. They do it through Young Champions. It's like $5 a week per kid or something like that. Anyway, they both love it-the older one has been doing it for a long time and she's getting pretty high up-she's strong as hell and she totally kicked the shit out of me one day. Mine did soccer through them a couple of years ago. She decided she's too prissy for soccer though-now she plays volleyball on the school team.

You can also find sport leagues through the Parks and Recreation Department-they have softball and soccer and stuff.

Ever since its debut, KZON has become a ratings liability for CBS Radio and has not performed well in the market. This has sparked rumors of a possible format flip to Rhythmic Contemporary and already the messageboard website Radioinsight has posted a logo that might point to these speculations becoming reality.[1]on June 21, 2007 at 5:00 PM Phoenix time, KZON begin it stunting phase with an sterotypical Homosexual guy name Renaldo taking over the station and play music from Paris Hilton trying to get Paris out of jail (because Paris Hilton is in Jail to serve her 23 day jail sentence. Paris Hilton will be release from Jail on June 25). the website of the station had a link on the main page, which had the words Free Paris written in pink on the site. meaning all of the "Free FM" links on the site– were deleted. the link redirected to the "Free Paris" Petition website.

tom leykis is a national radio host. he's kind of a shock jock. he creates controversy to boost ratings.

i guess he used to be a dj here in az a long time ago. now he's on freeFM and he has his own show. he does this thing called "leykis 101". basically, it's a show for guys to learn how to get more pussy for less money and for girls to learn about how guys thinks.

he actually has some good advice if ALL you want from a girl is sex. he says never to spend more than $40 on a date, never bring a girl back to your house, don't buy them shit, don't live with girls, don't have friends that are girls, ect.

and of course, dumbass chicks call in and try to argue with him and call him a pig and that provides entertainment.

he says he pulls a lot of bitches (probably because he's loaded), but he looks like this:

he's been married several times, but hates marriage and talks about how people shouldn't get married.

Mesa Amp is in downtown Mesa and should be easier to get to than 40th St and Thomas. You go the 10 to the 60 E to the 87 N. Traffic should be no prob until you get to the 60 and even then it depends on when you're going.

Thanks for the info. I've been debating getting tickets but I'm sure I'll be able to afford it. When I was at the gym earlier, I thought, "Well, you don't need to put this cost on your credit card. Just see them when they play Coachella again." But then I remembered the words of caution I've read from those who postponed seeing the Smiths or Nirvana on their last tours, figuring they'd see them when they next came around, and I don't want that to happen here. Even though I won't be able to get anyone else to go with me (I haven't even persuaded anyone to accompany me to the Daft Punk LA show -- anyone need an extra floor ticket?) I think I'll get up early and get myself a ticket.

P.S. I'm used to the heat and know that by the end of September, it'll be MUCH more tolerable than it was today. (Maybe 105 in Tucson at 6pm isn't as bad as it probably is in Phoenix, but it still fucking sucks.)

so I'm doing laundry this morning and taking the first load out of the washer and putting it in the dryer and there at the bottom of the washing machine is a scorpion. 3" long, nice light tan. Fortunately it was dead. I must have drowned it. Which means it would have been in the dirty clothes. To say 'i'm glad I didn't get stung' would be a severe understatement.

I fucking hate scorpions. hate them hate them hate them. I will kill any scorpion I ever see.

Yikes! My non boyfriend sees them all the time in his house. I've been in AZ for 13 years and can honestly say I've never seen one. Now June bugs? Fuck those guys. I'll leave the house if I so much as hear one.

I can't get around calling Mesa Amp a small venue. I consider the Marquee (at 1000) a large venue.

Meh. Perception.

The Glendale Arena is a large venue.

So I guess Mesa is medium sized.

Yeah best to not wander alone if you can help it. I haven't listed us on the flights yet but I'm sure we're going late morning on Saturday. And we're staying at the Vagabond.

I reserved a room at the Vagabond on Thursday. Haven't looked into flights yet. What kind of prices have you seen?

Do June bugs also go by "cicadas"? I haven't seen one in years but remember them being the bane of my existence when I was a kid. I've also been fortunate enough to not encounter any scorpions.

we probably get 2-3 a year in the house here. I got stung once. That was not a fun occurence. i was barefoot in the garage and stepped on it. got me on my 2nd toe. hurt worse than anything I can remember. the whole toe was dead numb for a week.

I assume it was in the washing machine because it was hiding in the pile of clothes I had just put in there to wash.

Wow seriously? That's impressive. What part of town are you in? My parent's house seems to get at least 3 or so a year.

I had a scorpion on my hand once, but it didn't sting me. It was dark in a room and I was sitting on a floor at my friend's place in Mesa. I moved my hand and felt something wrapped around my finger. I picked it up to see what it was but it was too dark to see. I must have moved it back and forth like 4-5 times. It was yellowish, so I thought maybe it was one of those wirey things you close off bread with (no idea why I thought this). I put my hand down, and it started crawling up my arm. I knew it wasn't a sandwich wire thing and flung it off. Sure enough, it was a young scorpion. I didn't sleep well for days.

If you have scorpion problems, I am not sure what the name of the stuff is, but they have glue traps that attract scorpions to them and then they get stuck and die. They work excellently.

Garnett might come to the Suns.

Its a three way trade with the Celtics and Timber Wolves.

Suns get Garnett

Celtics get Shawn Marion

Timber Wolves get 5th overall pick and other players (unknown at this time)

I don't care about losing Marion because of his disappearing acts in at least one series in the playoffs.

Won't Garnett have to agree to cut a lot of dough out of his contract to be able to make the trade work?

If he does, that shows he's more committed to winning than money-which is pretty cool. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

As long as the don't give up STAT... which is pretty unlikely regardless of ANY report.

I picture this next year:

STAT - C
KG - F
KT - F (barring he doesn't get traded in all this madness)
Bell - G
Nash - G

Barbosa, James Jones, and draft pick coming off bench to round out the 7-8 man rotations D'antoni likes to run.

Well if KT gets traded to Charlotte, you would have to think we would get the #8 pick. It would be KT, the 2 1sts we have right now, and Atlanta's 1st next year. If that's the case, insert whomever we would grab at the 8 spot into the lineup (Noah, Brewer, Green, Yi, Brandon Wright). As much as everyone rags on him, I would LOVE to see Noah in Phoenix. He is very comparable skill-wise to Marion (even the ugly ass jumper), but in a bigger and much less expensive package. We would lose some offense, but he would step right in, add some size, and is not concerned with being the #1 guy (like Marion is).

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. Should we be able to trade up we'd get a good deal on a big guy to step in. Loved Noah's attitude all through college and it's obvious he just wants to win. I've seen a few Yi videos and I liked what I saw in him. Far more athletic and faster than Yao would ever dream to be. Brewer has been mentioned also. I think the other ? mark would be who comes in for Nash for about 15 minutes a game?

Barbosa has proven that he can step in and keep the gas pedal pressed all the way to the floor with his speed, but he needs to improve ALOT in his vision and passing.

Yeah, I love Barbosa and all, but he should definitely not be looked at as a replacement for Nash. As for a backup PG, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the PG's they were bringing in to work out (Gabe Pruitt, the Greek dude whose name I can't remember but I know it starts with Kopa-, etc.) available with one of their late 1st round picks, if they keep it. If they trade those picks, I wouldn't be shocked if they grab an early 2nd rounder in hopes of one of their targets dropping. I would say FA would be another option, but they will be targeting Grant Hill with their midlevel and the PG field is rather weak. Maybe they will hope Marcus Banks develops over the summer. Glad we traded Rondo so we could overpay Banks.

Marcus Banks still pisses me off. After keeping track of him for a few years at UNLV and expecting some good things out of him... he was promptly turned into trade fodder for Minnesota and Boston.

I hope and pray that we get rid of him. If he hasn't shown anything in the year that Phoenix has had him, to at least gain himself some kind of playing time... I doubt he ever will. Not here anyway. D'antoni runs a tight team based on chemistry and offense. Neither are Banks strong points.

Yeah, if they're going to deal Stoudamire, they need to get more than just Garnett.

edit: actually I think I've changed my mind on this. Amare for KG straight up makes some sense. Stoudamire is an explosive offensive force and will just get better, but right now he's still a bit immature and doesn't play very good D. Put KG in there instead, you've got a veteran with much better defensive skills and maybe the same amount of offensive upside. KG's a lot older, yes, but the Suns' window of opportunity with Nash is only a few more years. I say do it.

Don't agree; Stat is immature-but that's fixable. KG is old. That's not fixable. Giving up a franchise player for instant gratification is never a good idea.
Plus, KG would be a decent defensive mentor for Stat

TomAz

KG is only 31. Look at the Spurs roster -- full of guys over 30.

I think Marion for Garnett is preferable for the Suns, but I'd do Amare for KG. Think of that starting roster.. Bell, KG, Marion? the Suns would suddenly be an excellent defensive team. Nash running the show, LB off the bench? I think the team gets better. PLUS if they manage to get Charlotte's pick and can draft someone like Noah? awesome.

I don't think the Suns should be thinking who will be better in 10 years. They need to focus on the next 5, get a ring or two, and rebuild after that. They're gonna have to rebuild when Nash retires anyway.

But the thing with Amare is that he works so damn hard. He will get better. He has the work ethic and drive to do so. It took MJ a few years, but he became the best defender alive. I am not saying he is MJ, but Amare has that same drive. So I have strong faith he will get better with his D.

Moving to an undisclosed location in downtown Phoenix, the swanky and intimate Chez Nous Cocktail Lounge closes this weekend with a farewell party.

The notoriously dark, 100-person club is relocating after more than 40 years at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Indian School Road, but owner Amina Uben isn't saying where she's moving until the paperwork is finalized, in about two weeks.

The current site will become home to an outpost of the British grocery chain Tesco.
advertisement

Chez Nous' party starts at noon Saturday, with bands all day, T-shirt and memorabilia giveaways and drink specials. Uben says she doesn't want to pack any of the bar's stock: "We want to get it down to next to nothing."

Built in 1964 by Maureen and Andy Womack on top of a crumbling bar called Leo's Write Inn, Chez Nous started as a destination for elegant evenings and frequented by a power-broking crowd.

Maureen, now 79 and living in Scottsdale, says she was ahead of her time when she designed the club with velvet flocked wallpaper, deep, curving tuck-and-roll booths and softly glowing electric candles. She's proud so much of her work has remained untouched.

"Barely anything's changed at all - the bar, all the tables and the chairs, all that's almost 50 years old now," she says. "The only thing different was the ceiling; it's black now, but then I did it in gold."

And it's that sense of timelessness, soaked in soul, funk and R&B, that has gotten Chez Nous mentioned in publications such as Rolling Stone, Details, Chicago Tribune and Elle.

Ronda Hampton of Phoenix was a bartender at Chez Nous for 10 years, leaving recently to open the Ruby Room lounge downtown. "Whether people had just discovered it or had been coming for years, people just felt a home there," she says. "I knew one boy who took first dates there so that if she liked the place, he knew she was cool."

Litchfield Park attorney Jerry Thompson says he used to drive past the beige stucco building, thinking he'd never want to go into such a small, odd-looking dive.

"But one miserably hot afternoon, I stopped in and it was dark, it was cool and I was treated like a long-lost brother," he says. That was seven years ago, and since then he's been sipping Rolling Rocks at the bar, getting to know the after-work and late-night crowds that he describes as "a little dressy and there to dance."

Now it's a neighborhood cocktail lounge with a cubicle-size dance floor that attracts all ages, races and tax brackets. Second and third generations of lounge lizards belly up to the mirror-backed bar, drawn to its retro Rat Pack ambience and feeling of history in a city conspicuously devoid of such throwback charm.

It's the kind of place where 20-somethings come in to see for themselves the place grandma cheated on grandpa, according to Uben, or where married couples come to relive the night they met 22 years ago. Or even where one couple, after hosting their wedding reception at the bar, still drink together although they've been divorced for years.

"It's just that kind of place," says Uben, a resident of Phoenix.

Which is why, in 2001, driven by citizen protests and petitions, Phoenix blocked the land's owners from allowing an Osco to be built on the property. That's when Uben bought the place, leaving her career as a researcher for the state Senate to save her favorite hangout. But now, as the land's owners have inked another deal, Uben and her daughters have decided to find a permanent home for Chez Nous.

She says many of the people who spoke up to save the original location have volunteered to help with the move. She's got a team of about 15 friends of the bar helping her move, decorate the new location and put together a grand-opening party.

The new location will hold about 150 people, with a patio (possibly giving the cigarette girl her old job back) and a handful of improvements, such as a new "gorgeous" bar back and an upgrade of the lava rock waterfall so it actually works, Uben says.

But much else will stay the same, even down to the wallpaper. Uben and her contractors are figuring out a way to take it with them to the new location.

Well at least they will be keeping a pick this year. Not all of them most likely, as they will vag out and trade a salary and first rounder in order to save money. The same Goddamn tightwad maneuver every year.

If you call trading a pick that turned into Rondo which would mean paying him $1 million a year, and giving Banks a contract that puts him at $4+ million a year smart, then no, I wouldn't call that responsible. It's stupid. Kind of like trading a shot at Luol Deng or Igoudala to save a little money. It is not financially wise to sign mediocre free agents to big deals when you can develop young talent and not have to pay them dick until their 4th or 5th year in the league. That is financially wise.

A Chandler baby was in critical but stable condition after she was left in an SUV for nearly two hours Thursday afternoon when the temperature was approaching 110 degrees.

Police said the 3-month-old's father had taken her with him to run errands. But when he returned home around 3:15 p.m., police said, he went inside and forgot that the baby was in a car seat in the back of the car. Dispatchers were called after the father realized what had happened and removed the child from the vehicle.

Firefighters said the baby had a core body temperature of 109 degrees. She was rushed to Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa in very critical condition.

Police said the infant is one of five children and that other family members were home during the time the baby was in the car.

Chandler police detectives are investigating and it was unclear if charges would be filed against the father.

I just heard (via co-workers) that the baby died.

Jesus; I simply don't get how you can forget that your baby is in the car. That guy has five kids-you'd think he'd be used to having a kid or two with him all the time!

Well I do feel sorry for him. There's no evidence he did it intentionally.

You know criticizing someone who's done something like that is really easy.

I know you've never fucked anything up, captncrazy, but for those of us who have made the occasional mistake, it's hard not to feel for the guy and what he's going to have to live with for the rest of his life.

amyzzz

I feel for the guy. Babies can be really quiet, so I can see how he might overlook the baby if he had a lot of things on his mind.

I've fucked plenty of times. But I've managed to never be stupid enough to kill anyone.

Sorry, I have very little sympathy and tolerance for stupid people. There are warnings EVERY SUMMER about this. How can it not be on your mind? I can see getting out of the car and starting to walk off and then realizing it, but two hours? I feel sorry for the victim-the baby. And the mother. And the siblings. Is that bitchy? Yeah. But stupidity shouldn't be an excuse for a lack of responsibility.

TomAz

Nobody is saying he should be excused from being responsible. Of course he should be held responsible. But railing on and on about how stupid he is and vilifying him seems pointless and a little too easy and shortsided to me.

Meh. I don't think I'm railing. It's angering to me that people disregard their kids like that. I get just as pissed when a little kid drowns and the parent is on the news saying "but I just left him for a second". Or when some dumb woman leaves her really little kids with a "boyfriend" that she's just met the week before and he ends up shaking one of them to death or molesting them.

BTW-I'm not advocating that he go to jail. It wouldn't do any good-I agree with you on this point. The fact that he'll have to live with this the rest of his life is punishment enough.

If we got angry over every stupid thing someone did to accidentally injure somebody else we'd all have high blood pressure. I try to limit my anger to stuff that matters, i.e., politics, sports, and this board, ha ha.

As a parent, I get very angry at hearing things like this. Kids shouldn't die before their parents period, but when the cause is their parents' being so complacent...drives me nuts. So many irresponsible parents out there. I just cannot fathom how you can forget a child in a car...boggles my mind.

So tragic, and so easily could have been avoided.

What a pathetic story. It's astounding to me that someone at the Republic actually thought this was news worthy.
