Ivy and I will be meeting up at Macayo's in Tempe for happy hour around 4 tomorrow, if anyone is interested in joining us. :)

I work until 7 that day, so if anything is going on 7:30 or later I can go. If not, oh well.

My goal is to taste every single beer on tap in a single night.

I'm down for that challenge.

Anyone watching the election coverage? I'm stoked Stanton is ahead of Gullett right now. I'm wondering what's happening in Mesa with the Pearce recall?

I posted this on facebook but thought I would try here as well. Nick has to have a wisdom tooth pulled and doesn't have insurance. I am looking for a dentist that will take a new patient without insurance for emergency work, preferably one who works with broke people on the north side of town.

Locachica, my girlfriend is a student at Phoenix College in the dental hygienist program. They mostly do cleanings and not sure if they do extractions (highly doubt it), but it wouldn't hurt to check and perhaps see if they can even refer you to a dental clinic, perhaps either at PC or at another school. Yes, it'd be done with students, but they are very closely supervised.

Contact PC Dental Clinic @ 602-285-7323

Also, doing a brief online search I came across this "Arizona School of Dentistry" which may offer inexpensive extractions:

ASDOH Dental Clinic
5855 E. Still Circle
Mesa, AZ 85206
480.248.8100

Dental Care West
20325 N 51st Ave., Unit 156
Glendale, AZ 85308
623.251.4700

I'll also check with my lady to see if she has any recommendations too.

locachica73
11-09-2011, 06:40 AM
I hadn't thought of that. That's a good idea. I had found Aspen Dental who gives you a free first visit for a consultation but the prices for an extraction range from $150 - $300 or higher if he has to have oral surgery. UGH. Luckily his mom has a money tree and is going to pay for it, but I might get extra points for finding a better deal. Or less points for trying to refer her baby to a student. Hmmm. I will throw both options out there just to be safe.

I fucking knew it

Jerice Hunter was arrested Monday on suspicion of child abuse involving her daughter, the missing Glendale 5-year-old, Jhessye Shockley, according to authorities.

Her arrest comes six weeks after Jhessye was first reported missing.

"With the information that has come to our investigators within the past few days, we do not believe it will be likely that we will find Jhessye alive," Sgt. Brent Coombs, a Glendale police spokesman said.

According to Coombs, recent information led police and the FBI Monday to serve a second search warrant on Hunter's apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues. He declined to elaborate, saying it would be "completely inappropriate" to disclose the new details of the case.

"She is our No. 1 focus," Coombs said of Hunter.

He said authorities on more than one occasion have offered to give the mother a polygraph test, but she has been uncooperative.

Coombs said police and Silent Witness have increased the reward to $25,000 for anyone who leads them to Jhessye.

He said it is "extremely important" to locate Jhessye and "bring to justice those responsible for her disappearance."

"I'd like to make it very clear that this is by no means the end to this investigation," he said.

Coombs described Hunter's arrest as a "step down the investigative path towards that final conclusion."

Earlier Monday, Hunter's mother and father denied their daughter had any involvement in Jhessye's disappearance.

"I don't feel it and a mother can feel certain things," said Shirley Johnson, Hunter's mother.

Hunter's father, Jesse Johnson, said he talked to his daughter on the phone about 8 a.m. Monday but that reporters had informed him of her possible arrest.

He defended his daughter, his voice rising as reporters questioned him about Hunter's reported arrest.

"I'm going to stand by her because I know my daughter hasn't done anything," he said. "My daughter loves her kids and is worried about Jhessye like everyone else."

Johnson and other family members were briefly at the apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues, which has crime scene tape around its perimeter. Crews in white gear were visible at the complex this morning.

Jhessye was reported missing Oct. 11. Hunter said she returned home from running errands and found the 5-year-old missing from their apartment. Older siblings were supposed to be watching the girl.

Child Protective Services removed Hunter's other children the following day. Hunter later gave birth and that child was removed from the home as well.

The music supervisor on my last movie is in a band called 1967. They're going to be playing with 4 other local bands - We Were Strangers, Cosmic Goat, Poorwater, and Revision 7 - at the Marquee next Friday. Tickets through Luckymanonline are $10 but with fees, whereas my friend has some to sell directly that cut out the fees.

Here's a link to the band's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/1967band

If you're interested in attending (I've got tickets for myself and Jen already, and we'll be having dinner/drinks somewhere beforehand) and want to save a few bucks, let me know and I'll coordinate the purchase of the tickets directly from Jaime.

This is what it looks like when you try to be cute and fail at it.

You obviously didn't read the rest of the cuteness.

This group was started in 2007 by a new resident to the valley. His goal was to meet people with similar musical interests. While he (Jon) is still a member, he has stepped down as Organizer. The group's purpose remains the same. Some people have the impression that Phoenix is somewhat lacking in culture but there is quite a vibrant music scene here. The focus of this group is music that is outside of the mainstream. whether it be indie rock, shoegaze, hip hop, alt. country, neo-folk, noise pop, dance-punk, riot grrrl, emo, lo-fi or math rock.

We have a few CD exchanges throughout the year, where members create mixes and meet to share them. We
go see a lot of shows - nationally touring bands as well as local ones. Even if a certain concert isn't officially posted as an event chances are you can find someone on the message board who might be going.

Don't be put off by the fact that this group is private. It's only for security. If you're genuinely interested then we encourage you to join.

Music can be a powerful bond between people and a lot of friendships have been made in this group.

You probably belong in this group if....

....you still think buying music in record stores is cool.

....you don't even bother to turn on the FM radio when you get in the car.

....even your guilty pleasures are bands most people have never heard of.

....your friends don't understand why you would go out of state just to to see a concert.

.... you're constantly giving mix tapes to your friends only to find out months later that they never bothered to listen to it.

....you'll go see a band you've never heard of on the chance that they might be good.

....you usually buy two concert tickets, knowing that you'll have to find someone to drag with you.

.... you've broken up with someone because they actually put Celine Dion on a mix for you.

....you put on your favorite CD at work and you get a bunch of weird looks.

....before you fasten your seat belt or turn on the AC you find something good on your iPod.

....you may download tracks on the internet for free, but if you like it you'll pay for it because you want to support musicians.

....you listen to bands that don't even exist yet.

....you meant to save money for groceries but blew it all at the record store.

Get it??? It's like those e-mails where you're reading the list and are like, "Hey! That's MEEE!"

Hello Phoenix people!

The two of us will be in Sedona for a couple of days for the xmas holiday. We've never been, and realistically, we'll only have a day and a half for exploring. So, if anyone would like to chime in with their favorite hiking/picnicking spots, and a really nice restaurant for a lovely Christmas dinner, it would be appreciated.

there are two oak creek brewerys. one is in an upscale shopping center and was quite yummy, but wasn't as pricy as some of the other restaurants. my computer has the a virus, but i'll try to find the name. i donmt know the names of the vortex trails, but i think one is bell rock. it'll be too cold for slide rock. if you wanna spend a ton of money, the la auberge (sp?) had a brunch that was to die for.

I've been to a lot of Sedona restaurants, but I'm not sure of a place for a very nice Christmas dinner. I was going to say Shagrue's, although I've only been to the Lake Havasu location. However, it appears the Sedona Shagrue's has closed.

Rene is highly recommended, and they have a special Christmas menu. I did some commercial work for Tlaquepaque and can confirm it's lovely, but I've never eaten there.

http://www.rene-sedona.com/rene_site_2011/christmas.html

EDIT ^^^ Oak Creek Brewery is very good, also at Tlaquepaque. Also, for Mexican/southwestern food, Oaxaca is good, been going there for a good 30 years or so.

I enjoy West Fork Trail, it's about 2 miles south of Slide Rock. It's an easy and level trail, but it does involve crossing the creek at several points. There are usually stepping stones and fallen logs to use, but still might not be the best option this time of year, unless you have the right shoes. Some pics. Oak Creek Brewpub is the restaurant at Tlaquepaque, however, I recommend heading to the actual Oak Creek Brewery which is just down the street if you want drinks, not sure about the food options at the brewery.

Another trail that is insane is Sterling Pass up in Oak Creek Canyon. You'll have to park on the side of Highway 89A. Basically you hike up a number of switchbacks come over a pass, and can then continue on to Vultee Arch, a natural arch and can actually hike to the top of it. This hike is intermediate to difficult.

Well, this kinda sucks... Red Rocks closes at 2 on xmas eve and is closed completely on xmas day. We probably won't get into town until noon at the earliest. Now I'll have to check and see whether other hiking areas will be closed during the holiday, too. That was the plan, to hike during the day (we're not really into strolling around shops and boutiques).

Also, we plan to drive in via the 60-71-89. Is there anything along that route we should stop and see, or maybe hike along before we arrive in town?

We had our wedding reception at the brewery. We rented the place out from 5:30pm to close. The owner is totally cool, and had tons of food waiting there for us. I couldn't remember if they made it there or not, I now realize he gave us a quick tour when we were checking it out as a potential spot and there wasn't a kitchen. Anyways I will always speak highly of Oak Creek since they hooked us up with an incredible spot for a party, with all the booze and food, for an incredible price.

U.S. Finds Pervasive Bias Against Latinos by Arizona Sheriff
By MARC LACEY

PHOENIX — In a strongly worded critique of the country’s best-known sheriff, the Justice Department on Thursday accused Sheriff Joe Arpaio of engaging in “unconstitutional policing” by unfairly targeting Latinos for detention and arrest and retaliating against those who complain.

After an investigation that lasted more than three years, the civil rights division of the Justice Department said in a 22-page report that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, which Mr. Arpaio leads, had “a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos” that “reaches the highest levels of the agency.” The department interfered with the inquiry, the government said, prompting a lawsuit that eventually led Sheriff Arpaio and his deputies to cooperate.

“We have peeled the onion to its core,” said Thomas E. Perez, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, noting during a conference call with reporters on Thursday morning that more than 400 inmates, deputies and others had been interviewed as part of the review, including Sheriff Arpaio and his command staff. Mr. Perez said the inquiry, which included jail visits and reviews of thousands of pages of internal documents, raised the question of whether Latinos were receiving “second-class policing services” in Maricopa County.

Mr. Perez said he hoped Sheriff Arpaio would cooperate with the federal government in turning the department around. Should he refuse to enter into a court-approved settlement agreement, Mr. Perez said, the government will file a lawsuit and the department could lose millions of dollars in federal money.

A separate federal grand jury investigation of Sheriff Arpaio’s office is continuing, focusing on accusations of abuse of power by the department’s public corruption squad.

Sheriff Arpaio was singled out for criticism in the report, which said that he had used racially charged letters he had received to justify raids and that he helped nurture the department’s “culture of bias.”

Asked at a news conference about Sheriff Arpaio’s role in the department’s problems, Mr. Perez said, “We have to do cultural change and culture change starts with people at the top.” Mr. Perez made a point of reaching out to Sheriff Arpaio’s underlings. “These findings are not meant to impugn your character,” he said to the department’s deputies.

Sheriff Arpaio, 79, who calls himself “America’s toughest sheriff,” brushed off the criticism in a news conference as politically motivated. He said he was particularly upset by an announcement by the homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, that as a result of the findings of discrimination, the federal government would no longer allow sheriff’s deputies to check the immigration status of inmates in their custody.

“This is a sad day for America as a whole,” Sheriff Arpaio said, suggesting that the federal government’s action was tantamount to setting up a neon welcome sign for illegal immigrants. “We are proud of the work we have done to fight illegal immigration.”

Long a lightning rod for controversy, Sheriff Arpaio looms large over Arizona and beyond. His turf, Maricopa County, with 3.8 million residents, is one of the country’s largest counties in terms of both area and population. Republican candidates at all levels clamor for his backing, aware that he has become a potent symbol of the antipathy many Americans feel about illegal immigration.

Before he endorsed Gov. Rick Perry of Texas for president last month, Sheriff Arpaio was courted by much of the Republican field, including Representative Michele Bachmann, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Herman Cain, a businessman who has since suspended his campaign.

The inquiry’s findings paint a picture of a department staffed by poorly trained deputies who target Latino drivers on the roadways and detain innocent Latinos in the community in their searches for illegal immigrants. The mistreatment, the government said, extends to the jails the department oversees, where Latino inmates who do not speak English are mistreated.

“The absence of clear policies and procedures to ensure effective and constitutional policing,” the report said, “along with the deviations from widely accepted policing and correctional practices, and the failure to implement meaningful oversight and accountability structures, have contributed to a chronic culture of disregard for basic legal and constitutional obligations.”

The report said Latino drivers were four to nine times more likely to be stopped in the sprawling county, which includes Phoenix and its environs, than non-Latino drivers. The expert who conducted the study called it the most egregious racial profiling he had ever seen in this country, said Mr. Perez, the prosecutor, without naming the expert.

The report said that roughly one-fifth of the traffic-related incident reports generated by the department’s human smuggling unit contained information indicating the stops may have been conducted in violation of the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition on unreasonable seizures.

The report also suggested that Sheriff Arpaio’s well-publicized raids aimed at arresting illegal immigrants were sometimes prompted by complaints that described no criminal activity but referred to people with “dark skin” or to Spanish speakers congregating in an area. “The use of these types of bias-infected indicators as a basis for conducting enforcement activity contributes to the high number of stops and detentions lacking in legal justification,” the report said.

Sheriff Arpaio has insisted that he is just enforcing the law and has mentioned in previous interviews that he has an adopted grandchild who is of Mexican descent. He has responded defiantly to past criticisms, with more raids. In the last three years, he has sent deputies into 56 Phoenix-area businesses, resulting in several hundred arrests for identity theft.

Asked at the news conference on Thursday whether he cared about the Latino community, the sheriff said, “I do have compassion, but enforcing the law overrides my compassion.”

As a result of the report, John Morton, director of immigration and customs enforcement, sent a letter Thursday to Maricopa County officials saying that the federal government would no longer provide the immigration status to deputies for anyone involved in a traffic stop, civil infraction or other minor offense.

The report is likely to increase calls for the resignation of Sheriff Arpaio, whose fifth term ends next year. He has vowed to run again. The sheriff, who has won election by wide margins even while frustrating his critics, has seen opposition to his leadership increase in recent months with reports that his department misspent county money and failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sexual-abuse cases, many involving illegal immigrants.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Arpaio’s critics took their case to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, which controls the sheriff office’s purse strings. The board heard a heavy dose of criticism of the sheriff, but also present were some of his backers, who praise his no-tolerance approach toward illegal immigrants. “Police officers make mistakes,” said Jerry Sheridan, Sheriff Arpaio’s chief deputy, in defense of the department.

The Justice Department report quotes from some people characterized as victims of the department’s overzealous ways. It cites the case of a Latino driver who won a $600,000 legal settlement after a deputy intentionally struck him with his patrol car during a traffic stop.

In another case, an inmate was not allowed to use another inmate as an interpreter to tell a detention officer that her sheets were soiled. She was told she had to make the request herself in English, even though she did not speak the language well.

After Sheriff Arpaio received a letter complaining that employees of a McDonald’s in Sun City, a retirement community, did not speak English, the sheriff forwarded the letter to a top aide, who mounted an immigration raid in the area.

Salvador Rodriguez contributed reporting.

I read that yesterday Tom. It makes me sick that there are people here that still defend him. He is far worse than most of the "criminals" he jails, yet he will never spend a day in jail. I hope that he somehow has to pay for his crimes, but that just isn't the way this world works. He will probably retire and get a nice pension and run for president or something. Sadly, people will even vote for him then.

Thanks for posting that, Tom. Aggravating read, especially due to the number of coworkers I have who would probably roll their eyes at any criticism against Sheriff Joe. They say his name like that as if they've got a relationship with him akin to one with an uncle. We've got a specific policy at work against discussing politics and it's driven me out of my head whenever the subject's come up at happy hours outside of work since there's only one other person in my department who doesn't think Arpaio is the bee's knees.

That get used? Mezzza Amp maybe, and that's never loud enough because of that stupid hotel.

I don't know, I've always thought the clarity was great. The bass is deep and clean, no rattling. The other instruments always seemed to be mixed well, where you can easily differentiate the sounds of each. It doesn't sound compressed and mudded like so many other local venues, imo.

Now that I think about it, I've always been in that center section (4?) in front of the sound board, or in the pit. That probably has a lot to do with it, lol.

Yeah, I was dead center for Beck and for the White Stripes, and it the sound was very clean .. but still not loud enough. A concert should sound like a concert, not like a broadway show. For AF, I was towards one side and it was awful. I was afraid to clear my throat for fear of disturbing the listening enjoyment of those around me.

Always loved the sound at Mesa Amp for the exact reasons Dylanja stated above. Eric Johnson on the first G3 tour at Mesa Amp is probably the best mix I've ever heard.

Yea, it's great. The selection at Fogo is not quite as exotic as other S. American steakhouses, but that could be a good thing if your dad doesn't want to chow on some intestine or something. A few of these places I didn't want to ask what I was eating.

12-22-2011, 03:25 PM
Fogo is good. Pretty much safe/normal like Timey mentioned. No chicken hearts. Their salad bar is very average for a Rodizio though. Highlights are the Picanha, Fraldinha, rib eye, and filet. Lamb is pretty good. The ribs are dry. Don't eat too much Pao de Quiejo (cheese bread), it'll kill your appetite. Beans on request, fried plantains, fried polenta, and potatoes are complimentary. Have a caiprinha too.

Oh, and if you eat a lot, expect to do nothing afterwards, you'll be a fat sloth. It's also very salty so prepare to CHUG water when you get home.

I think Brazilian Bull got renamed Fogo de Chao (or whatever). I seem to recall seeing billboards touting the change on my way in to work either at the beginning of the year or the end of 2010.

Classy.

In the latest, grossest example of (lacking human dignity and) not anticipating social media backlash after releasing a long-winded, hateful tirade to millions of viewers on the internet, comes a group of Arizona girls who decided to get together to talk about "Mexican immigration" and the "new Arizona law that just passed the legislator (sic)."

The video -- almost six minutes long -- was pulled from YouTube and the creators deleted their YouTube account shortly after their inboxes and social media accounts were flooded with video responses and hate mail.

Of course -- as with anything that's published online -- the video was downloaded before it was deleted and has been reposted on local and national sites including Perez Hilton and World Star Hip Hop and has been dubbed the "az racist girl rant."

Link (http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/jackalope/2012/01/arizona_girls_record_racist_yo.php) to watch video.

I'm having second thoughts about moving into a house in the Scottsdale Rd. / Shea area. It would be short term, sort of unpredictable and out of the way with 2 roommates. I have 5 weeks so i'm going to go apartment hunting. I was trying to avoid moving out on my own for another year becaues I really make terrible money but it's time for me to finally get my own apartment and suck up the cost. It's pretty sad when finding a place for $450/month will leave me with about $100 week in spending money after bills and I don't even have a car payment. Anyway, the hunt for the least shitty apartment I can find begins. I'm looking for something in either centeral or east phoenix or Tempe/west mesa at this point, that will take one small dog and has a washer and dryer in unit (that's idea but a community wash/dry is probably ok too).

Let me know if you all hear or know of anything. This is going to make traveling and music festivals much more difficult...eventually i'm sure. Time to be an adult again though. It's been way too long since i've had my own place.

Marc and Mark: the two of you should pool your resources and get a big-ish house, one large enough so that it will feel as though you're living alone but with the added bonus of living with someone who shares your name, that way if someone were to call the unnecessary house phone and asks to speak with "Marc/k," the response could always be, "Which one?"

I use AZ Federal Credit Union, I have been there for 15 years or so. I love it, even when I have issues with my account they were right on top of fixing it for me. The do shared branch transactions so you can do business at any desert schools or other credit union. They offer all sorts of savings incentives, loan options when needed, additional insurance options, etc. If you want to check out their website it's www.azfcu.com.
