I'm in east Mesa. It was a play on Matt's "location: the sane part of AZ" (he's in Tucson).

Ahhhhhh. I used to live near 75th St. and Power Rd. You're right, that is the insane part of AZ...at least in '06.

I used to see a handful of obvious tweekers walking or biking on the side of the road every early morning on my way to work. Eeeek.

ipic is awesome! i went and saw hanna there with my girlfriend a few months back. if you go, make sure to do the vip tickets. it is pricey but comes with valet parking, free drink and popcorn, and a recliner with pillows and blankets. you have your own personal server and you can order drinks or food from the restaurant that is attached to the theater. it isn't something i would do often, but it is definitely worth trying once.

Why is Flagstaff not sane?

-Take every rightwing asshole in the Valley, and make them the exact opposite politically. That's Flagstaff. I saw a guy bike-lock his neck to a natural gas line during a war protest. Now, this protest had no opposing side, other than the police trying to keep a bunch of morons out of the street. It was literally just people against the war inconveniencing other people who were against the war but chose to go to work or do something else productive.

-And even though they can get 25,000 people to come to a John Kerry rally, they can't figure out how to keep a Democrat in congress because they share a district with Prescott which is slightly larger. Of course, they can't get larger than Prescott, because they do absolutely everything they can to prevent anyone from building a house or business there.

-They book the same 6 bands over and over- Dark Star Orchestra, Karl Denison's Tiny Universe, Ozomatli, Spearhead, Roger Clyne, and a group of interchangeably unbearable rap/rock/reggae/stoner bands in the 6th position. Now, I even like some of those bands. But not twice a year each. Anything else...from my experience...plays to sparse crowds. (Or just get canceled)

-And yet, somehow Bone Thugs N Harmony plays regularly too.

-They spend 3 months a year worrying about catching fire.

-It can snow from October to June.

-The city won't use ice melt on the roads, because they think it's bad for the environment or cars or something. However, the main road through town is controlled by the state, and they do use ice melt. Which means people stop taking alternate routes and all pack onto the main road and drive through the "hazardous" ice melt.

-100 trains a day go through the middle of the town. 100. There are three places to cross the tracks without stopping...2 over, one under. There used to only be two, they had to raise taxes to get the third.

-Speaking of tax money, the city chose not to build a homeless shelter/rehab center, even though it's the number 1 problem they face. They did, however, build an indoor pool complex. (Right by the new overpass.)

-The city fought to prevent Walmart from building a supercenter on the far eastern edge of town. They already had a regular Walmart on the west side that is the first ugly thing you see when you drive into town. The Super Walmart would have been tucked back behind the mall and would have catered to people coming from the rural areas to the east, easing crosstown traffic. They wound up putting a 2nd Home Depot in it's place, which can't anchor the other stores they built around it, so they've started closing already. Meanwhile, Walmart plunked another regular sized Walmart right in the middle of town in a previously well wooded area.

-Although you'd think they would be all about local business, they keep driving small businesses to early deaths with regulation, and it's pretty much all chain restaurants and such. And people go crazy with excitement when they talk about adding an Applebees or something else that's not already there.

-Patchouli stink.

I'm exaggerating. It's a beautiful place. But man was it infuriating sometimes.

M Sparks
07-08-2011, 03:24 PM
Forget a few...

-Whole town stinks like dog food twice a week.

i think the diner on the corner of Mill and University has karaoke (18 up) and cheap beer. I've never been there some graduate students have recommended it. It's walking distance from Casey Moore's and a bunch of other bars on Mill Ave. Four Peaks and Papago are a few of my favorite beer bars, but are places I would start out the night rather than finish.

The Baer's Den is a shitty sports bar on the other side of campus on Apache/Rural. I don't go there, but they have karaoke. In Tempe I like Time Out Lounge, but mostly because they have Adams Family Pinball and people there play music I like on the touchtunes.

For downtown Phoenix: Sidebar, Lost Leaf, the Roosevelt.
Not downtown, but in Phoenix: Rips, Shady's or Bikinis.

There's also downtown Scottsdale (Giesha a Go Go should have karaoke).

I say bar-hop on Mill and see what poor decisions can be made. Karaoke? If there are attention-whoring friends who want to sing, that can easily be accomplished after some time on Mill, regardless of the venue...there's usually plenty of people singing on Mill regardless.

Just don't try to sing to the horse-cops.

Brewer ordered the vote to recall Republican Russell Pearce, the state senate's president and chief architect of Senate Bill 1070, after a citizen's group turned in enough valid signatures to force it.

Barring any legal challenges, voters in Pearce's Mesa, Arizona, district will go to the polls in what is believed to be the first recall election of a state legislator in Arizona history.

When I used to blow glass, our company went during 4th of July weekend one year. You're supposed to get a sheet, cut a hole in it, so the rubber from the tube doesn't burn you. So, everybody get's to the launch point, I take my sheet and lay it over the tube figuring out where I'm going to cut it. Go for the cut, and instantly stab and puncture the tube :nono Had to take the bus all the way back to the rental place (by myself) and get a new tube. Wait for the bus to go back and drop me off at the halfway point where I waited by myself for close to three hours, waiting for the group to get there. So brutal.

The last time I went tubing, I almost drowned when my tube got tangled in these roots just under the water at a fork in the river - it flipped over and I got stuck upside down and because of the way I was stuck under the roots couldn't do anything about it. All of my friends where a little bit ahead of me, and there was no one else around, so I was under for a few minutes before anyone noticed. Luckily one of my friends jumped out of her tube and swam over to help me out - then her tube floated away from her and since the water was relatively low there were these boulders just past the fork that were exposed, which she pretty much just had to let the rapids carry her over on her ass to get to the bank. She was completely covered in bruises, and probably pretty lucky that she didn't break something. But, if it weren't for her, I probably would have died.

So, yeah, no more tubing for me.

Has anyone actually watched a movie at FilmBar? I'm thinking of having a screening there but have been cautioned that it's not an ideal environment in which to watch a film due to the setup being more bar-oriented. That just seems kind of odd to me, though, considering what FilmBar was being touted as initially, and so I'm wondering if they either have a bar in the front where they show films (and if this is what the cautioners are referring to) in addition to a theater in the back that's a more bonafide film-watching experience, or if the people cautioning me on FilmBar were thinking of another place.

The theater is in the back, separated from the actual bar/lounge.

Yeah, I've watched a few films there now and have no idea what whoever said that was talking about. The theater is separated, with the bar in the "lobby" area, and while it has a few high-top tables in the back of the actual theater room, it also has more-comfortable-than-normal theater seats in the front.

Supposedly, I think there's a server for the theater to refresh drinks and whatnot during movies, however I've never actually seen that happen, so there hasn't been any interruption during the times that I've been there.

I think it would be ideal for a screening.

i could do four peaks, but only at noon or later for lunch. meetings all morning. meetings meetings meetings.

one thing to consider about four peaks is the party size. there is no real A/C there and seating is hard to come by, so we may have to eat outside... in july... in phoenix... i'd still come, but just throwing that out there :)

I could use a few good food recommendations for the Glendale/Peoria area. I'm going to (in all likelihood) be out there the last weekend in August for my fantasy football draft and we always go to the same places. Chick Fil A for lunch, somewhere like Elephant Bar for dinner.

I'd like to suggest something new to the group that has really good food...any ideas are much appreciated.

Most Mexican restaurants in this state are at least good. There are several that are exceptional. Not sure about names of restaurants in Phoenix (only familiar with the ones in Tucson) but you won't have a problem finding something great. That's the one thing I will miss when I eventually move away. I don't think I'll find mexican food anywhere in this country -not California and from what some friends in Tucson tell me, not even NM or Texas - that's as good as it is out here.

I could eat Mi Nidito, Michas, Rosas and several others in this town every day and I would rarely get tired of it. Just thinking about it is making me super hungry.

TallGuy, my favorite Mexican food joint in AZ, Carolina's, just opened up a location in Peoria (9030 W Peoria Ave). They have won tons of awards for their food. It's not full service, you order, they give you a number, you pick it up at the counter, and sit down at a table . I highly recommend it. Their tortillas are the bomb, paper-thin and delicious. I had thought that, but the "girl" name had me confused, I need to stop assuming gender based on name.

He told me his board name at Casey Moore's. I was confused too.

What are you the drinks there? Usual tap beers? The website doesn't specify.

3 different kinds of 4 Peaks, PBR, Stella, and some others; 4 Peaks drafts are $3 during happy hour, PBR drafts are $3 all the time. I work about 150 yards from Brick so we hit that place up often.

I get off work super early and don't want to go all the way home before happy hour, is there any other early arrivers that wouldn't mind drinking with me so I don't have to drink alone? I am thinking I will probably get there at 4ish.

Also, I am looking to distract myself, anyone interested in an impromptu happy hour today?

GoodGirlGalaxy
08-03-2011, 09:19 AM
That sounds great but I have to babysit my 1-year-old sister til 7 today.

I'm also interested in going a bit early to happy hour on Friday, but it all depends on how long I have to watch the kid for.

Also, I'm Sebastian. We probably met at Coachella, or at MELT last month.

That would be cool, I always feel like a lush when I have to belly up to the bar alone... well, more of a lush than normal.

FYI, I made the reservation for Brick at 6:00 tomorrow. I let them know that some people might show up earlier than that (I'll probably get there around 5:45, since it's only 10 minutes from work), and they said that's fine. It's under Amy!

amyzzz

Then I'll be there at 6:10 since you work right next to me, tee hee.

What time are people showing up to Brick? Didn't Locamotion say she would be there at 4pm? I'm thinking about heading over there at that time, but I can only stay 'til 5pm.

After the day I am having I might skip the pedi/waxing and just head straight there, all I can think about right now is a beer and a smoke.

GoodGirlGalaxy

I wouldn't necessarily call that a "crazy" boss. I had a boss who wanted to get drinks after work all the time, especially on Fridays. He was an awesome boss. Is this boss of yours, Ivy, a little weird or what?

chairmenmeow47

she's just crazy in general. she even asked permission if we could go to a bar for a meeting, um, just do it, don't ask, they have to say no!

I need some vehicle work done. A/C installed, front struts and possibly right front axel. Anyone have any mechanic recommendations in the SE Phoenix area or DT Phoenix area? I know a good shop in Scottsdale but I was hoping for a more convenient location and somewhere I can drop it off and get to work fairly easily.

I have an awesome mobile mechanic who will come to you to do all the work. He's the only one I really trust to work on our cars. PM me if you want his contact info.

I just wish we could get more evening storms, getting all the humidity without any of the cool storms to go with it sucks.

There was a storm late Friday night.

locachica73
08-15-2011, 07:29 AM
I know, I slept through it though, so I am not counting it. The thunder did set off the car alarms in my parking lot though, so I vaguely remember getting woken up. I just miss sitting on my balcony and watching the storms roll in, the middle of the night ones are a waste of good wind and lightning.
