We're going but I'm not sure if we'll be hanging out anywhere beforehand. I'm going to have Taylor with me and we have pit tickets so we will probably going to want to get in early.

there's that big garage on adams right behind the theater.

Perfect. I've always went with street parking a few blocks away but being that i'm in a hurry i'll opt for the garage.

My wife and I will be at AF, gonna try and get there a little early since we have pit tickets. Hanging with friends at Local Breeze prior to the show which is at the NW corner of 4th Ave and Fillmore, then we are going to walk to the show. I think we're shooting to get to Local Breeze around 4:30pm to eat and drink. This may change though, since one of the people in our group is strongly pushing that we go somewhere that has the Coyotes game on TV.

Local Breeze, you say? My gf and I will be going to the concert. It would be nice to meet up and meet some of you since I am a relatively new PHX-to-Coachella attendee (I lived in Portland my first three years of attending the festival).

Haven't been to the Dodge or whatever it's called now in a while.

It's now Comerica Theatre. It's no Ashley Furniture HomeStore Pavilion, but it'll do.

I have to wait for my friend to get off work at 5 pm. We'll probably just head straight to the show because you have to pick up pit tickets at will call. Hopefully the line won't be too bad.

I know, I feel bad about letting the girls night thing fall through the cracks, I am finally getting use to waking up at the butt crack of dawn though so we will definetly get it scheduled soon. I just worry that if it is a happy hour type thing I will be drunk before you all even get out of work. Not that there is anything wrong with that I guess.

I am feeling the need to get my dance on soon too so maybe we can wrap a few things up into one. :)

For the most part, it still bothers me if I misuse it. When we were in Vegas last month we walked the strip from Stratosphere to NY NY, stopping in all the casinos and walking around. It took a week to not cringe when I walked after that. But other than that I am pretty much back to normal, as normal as I can be anyway. :)

Our State just gets worse, and worse:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/20/gary-ackerman-would-tread-on-tea-party-plates_n_851665.html

A new Arizona license plate would say "Don't Tread on Me," but that's exactly what New York Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman wants the federal government to do with a new bill.

The plate, proposed by state Sen. Don Shooter (R-Yuma) in homage to the Tea Party, would be paid for by fees from would-be tag holders. The plates cost $25, $17 of which would be allocated to "promote Tea Party governing principles."

The New York lawmaker doesn't mind the idea of a politically-charged plate, but thinks putting the proceeds towards an interest group like the Tea Party amounts to a misuse of public money.

“Using official government resources to help bankroll an explicit political agenda –- whether on the right or left -– is flat out wrong,” said Ackerman.

In an effort to block such actions, Ackerman plans to introduce a bill in Congress called the "License Plate Political Slush Fund Prevention Act."

“It seems that the GOP in Arizona is attempting to do nothing more than create a slush fund for its Tea Party friends," he said. "It’s a scheme that smacks of cronyism, and should not be allowed to become law.”

Other states have proposed Tea Party plate laws, including Nevada, South Carolina and Virginia, and Texas passed one. But the money collected in those states doesn't fuel the Tea Party.

“License plates shouldn’t be used as political payoffs,” Ackerman contended. “The Arizona GOP might think differently if the legislation were to create a MoveOn.org license plate," he said, referring to the liberal advocacy group.

The congresman's bill would put the brakes on such laws by docking states that pass them 15% of their federal highway money.
Shooter's office did not answer requests for comment.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has not said if she will sign the measure, which has passed both houses of the state legislature.

Fortunately for you, you're in a heavy call center state. Uhaul pays shitty, but there are tons of call centers around that will start you at more like $12 an hour....AMEX, Discover, BofA, Chase, USAirways (I don't think we have any openings though). Southwest used to have a call center here but they closed it. Also check Wells Fargo--they have a shitload of offices here, plus all the branches and they're always looking for tellers....you'd make more than you make now and it's a good place to start.

I've got questionable credit so all the banks/cc companys are out. Also, I'm a little burnt out on the phones for right now. put the legs of the crib in glass jars (like mason jars) and keep the crib away from the wall by a foot or two. this will prevent scorpions from getting in the crib.

we have a service that we use that puts a barrier (chemical) around the house that works ok but is by no means perfect.

yes, and I think there is no shortage of principled Republicans who feel the same way. It's the wrong thing to do.. which was sort of the point of that article.

I actually like scorpions... as long as they are not within stinging vicinity. I think they're interesting. Definitely important to scorpion proof the house if you're in an area that has a lot of them though - I grew up in the boonies, and we were constantly finding them (and geckos, and giant mutant beetles, and the occasional snake) in the house. I'm kind of surprised that I never got stung, actually, considering where they would show up.

As for the license plate thing - I'm pretty much not a fan of special plates in general. And, it's slightly ridiculous how many bills get introduced each year for new ones. They're completely superfluous, and imo, a huge waste of legislative time. I'm of the mind that they should all be done away with. If you want to give money to a cause, great. You don't need a special snowflake license plate to tell everyone about it.

What is FilmBar? I remember briefly discussing it a long time ago. Is it worthy of a review in the Dylan thread?

It's an independent cinema and bar downtown, which just opened a couple of months ago. They have snacks at the bar (which looked like they far surpassed regular bar snacks - it was like, kibbe and falafel) as well, so I think it technically qualifies for review. I'll dig up the thread and do one, though I didn't actually eat anything while there.

The movie I saw was quite good as well. It was a Belgian film called "Dirty Minds", about this slightly pathetic, sad sack of a man who falls out of a window, develops something called a frontal syndrome (essentially, a concussion) that changes his personality, and becomes this ballistic, womanizing stunt man.

Too bad, I was going to suggest we see that.

Their website is atrocious. If you click "Complete Calender", there are all kinds of things listed that aren't actually on the website, but there's no info. For example, there is some kind of animation festival next week, but no description on the website.

I follow their facebook feed. They apparently have stand up comedy on random occasions too. I plan on going there soon, just not sure when yet. I'm planning on going to the symphony on Saturday night.

I.F.A.
05-02-2011, 11:20 AM
I would totally see it again, so if you want to meet up for it I'm in.

They also have an upcoming showing of Takashi Miike's new movie, called 13 Assassins. Normally I avoid his movies, since they're a little too goretastic for my liking (I couldn't even make it through the preview for Ichi the Killer), but it looks like with this one he's venturing less into his usual weird s&m territory and more into a traditional (but probably still very gory) historical drama kind of thing.

I saw a preview for the animation fest, and it actually looked pretty cool. Might be worth checking out.

It seems like this is the kind of place that you actually have to go to to really keep up on what's going on. I talked to the owner a little bit, and he seems like a very nice guy. Apparently he spent a few years in Tehran, and his affinity for the culture really shows in the decor - it's really beautiful inside. There are these amazing murals, puffy seats, and Moroccan lanterns all over (also, hence the kibbe and falafel on the snack menu). It would be a great place to go just to have a drink. It seems like they're still kind of getting their bearings, but I really don't mind it - I just hope it doesn't hurt their business. This is a place that I am definitely going to be supporting as much as possible.

It's also nice that they're venturing out from just movies. There's the stand-up night, and they also have DJ nights on weekends. Hopefully the diversity of what they're doing will keep it going.

I have no clue of anyplace cool to go west of downtown. I thought about taking the easy way out and meeting at Westgate, but it's "biker night" so it will be even more annoying than usual. No, she's at the Glendale Public Library in downtown Glendale.

Well, the one in downtown Glendale actually is called the Velma Teague branch - it's still a Glendale library, they just name the branches individually so as not to be confusing, I guess. The "main" branch is the one on 59th ave and Dunlap, by GCC, and there's another branch called Foothills on 59th and like Deer Valley. Actually, there might be more by now, but I haven't really kept up. Those are the ones that were open when I worked there.

Secret Museums

Throughout the ages, erotic art has been created by some of the world’s best-known artists, but it is rarely on public display. Whether it is held in private collections, or kept under lock and key in museums and libraries worldwide, erotic art and literature remains censored. But when graphic, even extreme sexual imagery is freely available on the Internet, why is erotic art considered so dangerous that it must be prohibited?

Filmed in England, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the U.S., SECRET MUSEUMS explores the locked rooms, warehouses, museum cellars, bank safes and private homes where erotica is hidden, from the British Museum and the National Library of France to Munich’s National Graphics Collection and the Vatican, home of the world’s largest collection of pornography. Gaining access to carefully guarded collections with names such as “Secretum,” “Gabinetto Segreto” and “L’Enfer,” the film reveals books and images never before filmed or photographed.

SECRET MUSEUMS features interviews with wealthy collectors, museum curators and guides, librarians, authors, gallery directors, art restorers and experts in erotic art, who discuss the reasons for the cultural suppression and control of erotic art; how institutional gatekeepers, as the protectors of public morality, decide what is acceptable; the difficulty of some in accepting sexuality as an appropriate subject for art; the compulsion to assemble private collections; and how many erotic masterpieces remain hidden today.

I once had a friend who did whippits constantly. And one night he was drinking a 40oz of Mickey's and was standing on the sidewalk. He did a whippit, held the bottle of beer to his chest and fell face-first, plank-like, on the pavement. The bottle shattered and the bits and pieces were between his chest and the sidewalk. He woke up a few hours later and went on his merry way. Whippits do weird things to the brain.

Both performances I attended I sat front row balcony which is a $72 ticket for just $11. I saw a performance of Mozart the first week and Beethoven's 5th last weekend and both were terrific. I like Mozart a bit more but as a fan of piano both of these peformances were enjoyable. I plan on attending the final performance of the season on Saturday June 11th next, which will be Live and Let Die the music of Paul McCartney. The next season will start in September. You college kids can get a pass for the entire season for only $30.

For non college kids, tickets start at $18 and if you hit the Symphony website at the right time a survey may pop up that will get you 50% off tickets but it's completely random. I saw it a few times last week.

I purchased some hot cappy, blazin' buffalo seasoned almonds, raw almonds, a bag of frozen broccoli and then some liquor. I got botabox wine (huge wine sale at Fry's this week btw, normally $21 on sale for $10.99!), a bottle of vodka and some sugar free red bull's. I think that's it.

Yeah, I figured he would be fine, but I am hoping he will have fun so I can convince him to do this sort of thing more often.

Let's tentatively plan some cheap drinking at least, our hotel is within walking distance I have heard so we could maybe start there and have a pear vodka cocktail and then do a little bar hop before hand? Maybe get a game of pool in or something? I think we are leaving between 4-5 so we should be up there somewhat early. :)

Amy, you might want to check out Mountain Oasis for vegetarian goodness. My favorite downtown spots were San Filipe's (here it's a big stupid theme bar, but the one in Flag is more like a little hole in the wall Mexican joint.) and Bigfoot BBQ (it's in the basement of the Old Town Shops). Sadly, there aren't many good restaurants downtown, but there is Altitudes, Fratelli's Pizza, and Beaver Street Brewery just south of the tracks (close to where MELT used to be.)

Not so fast you sick potheads.

PHOENIX – On Friday, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne will file a federal lawsuit on behalf of the state of Arizona asking for a declaratory judgment on the legality of its new voter-approved medical marijuana initiative.

The lawsuit stems from a letter written by U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke last month. In that letter, Burke warned that growing, distributing and possessing marijuana is against federal law. He also said individuals and businesses engaged in those activities could face federal charges.

"The CSA [Controlled Substances Act] may be vigorously enforced against large marijuana-production facilities," Burke wrote to Will Humble, director of the state Department of Health Services.

"Individuals and organizations – including property owners, landlords, and financiers – that knowingly facilitate the actions of traffickers also should know that compliance with AMMA will not protect them from federal criminal prosecution, asset forfeiture and other civil penalties."

"This compliance with Arizona laws and regulations does not provide a safe harbor, nor immunity from federal prosecution."

It’s that phrase in particular that has Gov. Jan Brewer and Horne concerned.

“You can’t have people subject to two competing sovereignties – the state sovereignty that says it’s OK [and] the federal sovereignty that says it’s not OK, we’ll prosecute it,” Horne said. “In that kind of a situation, you need to go to a federal judge and say, ‘OK, who prevails and what’s going to happen?’”

While Burke said in his letter that growers and sellers could face federal charges, he also said he had no plans to go after “seriously ill individuals who use marijuana as part of a medically recommended treatment regimen and are in clear and unambiguous compliance” with Arizona’s law.

At the time, the Arizona Department of Health said it’s possible -- even probable -- that Burke’s promise to prosecute those who grow and sell marijuana might reduce the number of applications for dispensary licenses.

The application process for potential dispensaries was set to begin on June 1. Now, however, the entire program, which was approved by voters, is on hold while courts decide on its legality.

One of Brewer’s primary concerns is the state employees who are involved in medical marijuana program.

“The state employees are participating in preparing regulations, issuing permits,” Horne explained. “This is true of county and local employees, as well. If it’s found that this whole activity is illegal, then they’re subject to arrest the same as other people participating in the process. You simply can’t have that.”

Proponents of the initiative say the federal government has never sued to keep a state medical marijuana from being implemented, nor has it arrested state employees involved in such a program.

“The Justice Department did a 180-degree turn,” Horne said. Early on a memo stated that cases in which people who were doing things that were legal under state law would not be prosecuted. Those cases would be a given a low priority. Recently, however, U.S. attorneys for several districts, including Arizona, have issued letters stating the opposite.

“We have to listen to what they’re saying because they put people in jeopardy,” Horne said.

According to Horne, some states have halted their medical marijuana programs completely in view of those threats of prosecution.

“We took a neutral position,” he said. “We have not sought to undo the will of the voters, nor have we sought to give implementation to our own views of the merits of the situation. … We’ll let those with an interest in the subject actually do the arguing for one side or the other on the merits of it. We simply think a court has to rule on it.”

It’s not clear how long the program will be delayed.

she's not doing it because she fears for the state employees...there are already many other states doing this and not one of thier employees have ever gotten in trouble.

Danny Zelisko launches downtown Phoenix music venue

Danny Zelisko has announced the opening of a new, 1,500-capacity music venue in downtown Phoenix called the Foundry.

The venue, located at 402 S. 1st Street, across from Alice Cooperstown, will open Friday, July 8 with a show by New Orleans rockers Cowboy Mouth.

Danny Zelisko Presents, the local industry veteran's new company, has also announced Foundry concerts by Tempe rockers Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers Saturday, July 30; Queensryche Thursday, Sept. 15; Buddy Guy Tuesday, Sept. 20; the Adrian Belew Power Trio with Tony Levin's new group the Stickmen Thursday, Oct. 20; and Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society Friday, Oct. 21."I'm really looking forward," he says, "to making this nightclub happen in a big way."

Zelisko, the Valley's most prominent concert promoter for nearly four decades, parted ways with Live Nation, where he'd been directing Phoenix operations, earlier this year.

He's been a fixture on the Valley music scene since founding Evening Star Productions in 1974.

Zelisko says, "I called Live Nation and said, 'Can I have the name Evening Star back?' And they said, 'No.' "

In addition to booking the Foundry, Zelisko Presents is working with the Arizona State Fair, bringing Billy Idol, Judas Priest, Miranda Cosgrove, 3 Doors Down and Weezer to the fair.

Zelisko also announced the following concerts:

Return to Forever with Zappa Plays Zappa, Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Mesa Arts Center.

Chris Botti, Friday, June 17, at the Orpheum Theatre.

The Musical Box, performing Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Orpheum.

Joe Bonamassa, Monday, Dec. 5, at the Orpheum.

Jerry Riopelle's New Year's Celebration Saturday, Dec. 31, at the Orpheum.

Surprised I haven't heard more about this.

Arizona is considering laws that would ban abortions on the basis of the race or sex of the fetus, and prevent state money from going toward abortion, either directly or indirectly.

Even when i'm reading national news or stories about other states....I can't avoid news worth getting disappointed about regarding our state.

Somehow I missed it when it happened but this passed in late March.
