Well, this is pretty much attorney Central. There are like 7 or 8 firms on this corner.

Such a bad-ass! :)

Ha, not exactly, I've just got a good bullshit detector. I got crap like that all the time when I was working in the public library. You wouldn't believe how much of a fuss people will put up over a 20 cent fine. I've had books and videos thrown at me, and I had to have people trespassed from the building for threatening me. People usually think that working in a library is quiet and boring... they have no idea.

Nope, must be my lucky year.

It really isn't that bad, I use to work at 56th Street and Van Buren, Phoenix/Tempe/Scottsdale border and that was a much worse neighborhood. One of my coworkers even witnessed two hookers beating the crap out of each other in a crosswalk over there. I will take a few homeless guys over angry hookers any day.

I used to live at 52nd St. and Van buren and on 52nd St. between Van Buren and McDowell. Never had any problems. Then again I don't consider hookers walking through our complex or helicoptors every weekend a problem. I consider that action! I lived there from 2000 - 2003. I would live there again too.

Where I live now at 44th st. and baseline we've had a pizza guy get shot about a year ago so Dominos no longer delivers to our complex, I had my car broken into once and the stereo stolen, some fires in other buildings in our complex. The rest is just stories. I heard kids talking about guns an knives all over the place but I have never seen any. I'm never afraid to sit outside or use the pool either. I like my complex because we have a diverse community. I love it. Indians, blacks, mexicans and even jews and native indians!

locachica73
10-05-2010, 02:23 PM
It doesn't matter where you live anymore. I use to live in Chandler in a pretty nice complex and watched as the SWAT team came out and bust my neighbors, apparently a husband stabbed his wife and barricaded himself in the house, once they finally got in they found they had 20 or so relatives living with them so they brought out the immigration people. Good times.

Then when I lived out in Mormon land in a brand new house we had a murder suicide on one corner and a gramma who had a meth lab in her house on the other.

There is good and bad in every neighborhood. I prefer to have my bad be up front and in my face than hidden quietly behind nice picket fences.

I.F.A.
10-05-2010, 02:32 PM
You've had people trespassed? How does that work exactly?

I.e. either temporarily or permanently barred from entering the building, depending on the severity of what they did, and whether or not they were repeat offenders. It didn't happen terribly frequently, and usually it was for kids who were caught vandalizing or trying to steal CDs or something, and then they'd be trespassed for like a year (or, for lesser infractions, they'd lose their computer privileges for a certain period of time, since most of them were mainly there to use the computers anyway).

But sometimes we'd have pervs caught masturbating in the stacks or something, or someone would threaten/continually harass/stalk the staff to such a degree that made it necessary to have them permanently nixed. Security staff handled it and, if they got rowdy and wouldn't leave, occasionally the police. All public libraries have policies and procedures in line to deal with "problem" patrons.

We were lucky to have a permanent security staff on guard, as a lot of libraries don't because they're not budgeted for it. In which case it's a lot harder to deal with stuff like that.

Back in my home town, Lansing the south suburbs of Chicago my mom and many friends have moved away because it's turning "black".

What year is this? Cook county is pretty much 50/50 white/black so i'm not sure why everyone keeps running but more importantly why other than racism? :nono

Then again this is a town where ingorance is bliss. My high school T.F. South embraced the rebel cause and flew the rebel flag up until 1994 (the year after I graduated). Had a rebel fighter as it's mascot as well and tried to justify it all with the term "tradition". All in the land of lincoln. In cook county not rural southern illinois either. When I went to the school it was less than 20% black. Now it's over 50%.

Even more interesting to me is the school was opened in 1958. Who would have thought in a Chicago suburb in 1958 it would be a good idea to embrace the rebel flag as the school flag and the entire southern rebel theme? Well, an all white school of course. There is still a lot of racial tension in that town. That's what a lot of whites have done though. They moved from neighborhood to neighborhood to be with "their own". It's just surprising to me that this is still going on 2010 and the irony of it being in such a melting pot of a city.

Might as well call the team "The Slave Drivers". It's like schools that use Indians as mascots and pull the "tradition" card - I just don't get it. "Tradition" is quite frequently fucked up and oppressive - maybe we could actually like, evolve into a more open and equal society that celebrates not objectifying and stereotyping classes of people by making them mascots for our sports teams, and leave the racist "traditions" behind. Or something? It's a crazy idea, I know.

I missed the thick of it luckily, but our porch lights are broken and the paint flaked off the carport covering due to the giant hail that hit it. Something funny-they (we...I don't know about Southwest's stragegy) actually jack up the prices to and from Vegas at the last minute because people get drunk on Friday nights and decide to jump on planes to Vegas for the weekend. True story.

About 8 years ago I flew to Vegas with a couple co-workers and one of them was able to score 4 beers during the short flight. He was able to get one as he boarded, one during the drink service then pressed the button once and finally as she was collecting garbage and we were starting to descend he asked for one last one which she refused but he pulled out a $20 and said it was hers if she gave him one. She took the $20 and said you better drink it fast and handed him the beer as landing gear came down. He slammed it and spilled a bit on himself.

We ended up losing him at the airport. Found him at a craps table where he was doing shots. He got lost again after losing $800 in the first 2 hours there. He didn't have his room key so he passed out in the hallway in front of his room at the Luxor. Security called the cops and the cops drove him to the airport and left him there. He finally figured out how to use his phone at 1am and was picked up and stayed with some other friends at a differenct casino for 2 nights...broke of course. I never heard of the cops kicking someone out of town by taking them to the airport before. Good times. Love Vegas.

this story is best told in pictures...

i went to vegas one NYE with a big group of friends. a lot of us were on the same flight. many of us were partying before the flight:

we also continued drinking on the plane.

http://ivy.aholic.us/gallery/d/583358-2/on_le_plane.jpg

http://ivy.aholic.us/gallery/d/583360-2/plane_madness.jpg

some of us, were a little too drunk though. the guy sitting next to me (incidentally a casual board member) kept holding both arms, straight up in the air like we were on a roller coaster. he was saying shit like "WEEEEEEEEE!". and then saying things like "THIS IS CAPTAIN IVYSAUR SPEAKING" and laughing his head off.

a girl in the other row kept being super loud, swearing and laughing a lot. just before we landed, a guy turned around and told her "I'M SICK OF YOUR CRAP!". which just made her laugh more.

when we got to the airport, me and another guy kept saying "let's play the quiet game" because everyone was so rowdy. here is what the girl did when we got to the hotel:

http://ivy.aholic.us/gallery/d/583362-2/passed_out_in_closet.jpg

i don't have a home phone. i stopped getting calls from the symphony once i told them i didn't plan to buy anything from them as i don't have time and plan to only buy at the spur of the moment.

i also FINALLY stopped getting united blood calls like earlier this year or something. i told 80 million people to stop calling me and it never worked. i had to get bitchy with someone's manager for it to finally stop.

i hate that shit. last time i donated, someone asked over the phone if i wanted to donate platelets and said it was a similar process. after about 13 minutes into the process, the person said "only 73 more minutes to go!" i giggled, thinking that they were joking. they were not. platelets take 90 goddamned minutes. i was stuck watching entertainment tonight and some shitty "the rock" guy movie. i also didn't eat since i normally just treat myself to a big meal after donating. i was sick for DAYS afterward. i gave up on donating after that.

i've always gone the Laughlin route cause of the traffic delays on the dam. people slow down to gawk and it can take an extra 30-45 mins to take the dam route. now that there is a bypass, i might start going that way. technically, it should be the faster route.

I recommend the Hidden House on Wed/Thurs. I might be there tomorrow, one of my friends is performing. It's free, and they usually have about 10 comics. It's not really an open mic...the guys who run it make an effort to keep a balance and only allow one or 2 newcomers each show. There's a rotation of experienced regulars, and usually one or two touring performers. A lot of times, it's someone who is the opener for the Improv that weekend, and they come into town a day early and warm up there.

I don't think I am. I would like to get Suns tickets but I don't want to pay very much so that's not likely. Connor would love to go to the game though, he had fun last week at the pre-season game.

The Gorillaz show was a blast last night! Ivy and I had a lot of fun. Saw D$, did not see Jason. I also picked up a cool poster for only $10. Pretty, pretty good.

yeah, we got there a little later than we would have wanted. i looked around for a group of you guys here and there, but ultimately we were in and out of there pretty quick that night.

that was a great show they put on. they are really tearin it up across the US this time around!

He's in his 20s. I have no idea. He's the editor on my movie and he's got hundreds of DVDs, so I think that might have something to do with it. But yeah, I was on him about it pretty constantly when I found out he'd never been to a show and likes the band. He said he was real glad he went.

Nick and I went to the fair on Saturday for the Godsmack show and it was a lot less expensive then I had thought it would be. If you get there before 6 it is buy one admission get one free which ended up only costing us $10 total for the two of us. The rides were outrageous though at 50 cents per ticket and each ride costing 10 or more tickets. So we are probably going back on Thursday for the bracelet day so we can ride some rides. If anyone plans on checking it out it was actually pretty fun. We also found free parking in a neighborhood back behind one of the $20 parking lots off of McDowell, which was really helpful. The show wasn't even that full and I had purchased the tickets beforehand. Had I known it wasn't going to be that crowded I would have done the GA and saved $50+ on tickets.

So how did everyone vote, or how are you planning to vote? For all of the federal & state races, I voted for Democrats, which is kind of disappointing because I'm not even registered as one but I just feel that to be a Republican candidate in this state, the person has to have views that are radically different than mine. I could've stood to do some research before making my selections but I didn't make it to this site (http://www.votesmartaz.org/) until I got to the propositions.

Prop 106 (essentially an attempt to overturn "Obamacare") - no
Prop 107 (eliminating affirmative action - I accidentally voted yes; I don't know what happened there but I would have preferred to vote no
Prop 109 (making hunting a constitutional right) - no
Prop 110 ("authorizing the sale or lease of state trust land without auction or advertisement in order to protect military installations & operations") - no
Prop 111 (changing Secretary of State to Lieutenant Governor; having Governor & Lt. Governor run on the same ticket) - yes
Prop 112 (changing initiative filing deadline from 4 months to 6 months prior to each general election) - no
Prop 113 (guaranteeing the right to vote by secret ballot) - yes
Prop 203 (authorizing the use of marijuana) - yes
Prop 301 (transferring the balance of money in the land conservation fund to the state general fund) - no
Prop 302 (terminating AZ Early Childhood Development & Health Board programs) - no

Here's a handy voter's guide.

Prop 106: NO
Prop 107: NO
Prop 109: NO
Prop 110: YES
Prop 111: unsure, leaning NO
Prop 112: YES
Prop 113: YES though it seems kind of stupid
Prop 203: YES
Prop 301: hell NO
Prop 302: NO

YES on Proposition 110
Support Open and Accountable
State Trust Land Exchanges

Proposition 110, for the first time, provides a way to exchange state trust land for federal lands that includes accountability and transparency. The exchange process will have an open and public process that identifies all lands that will be exchanged up front, requires two land appraisals, includes an analysis of the impacts, and requires two public meetings. All of this must happen prior to any exchange moving forward. This helps limit backroom deals that have been a problem with some past exchanges. Each land exchange must also go to the voters, so the voters have the final say and provide a screen for ensuring that an exchange is truly in the public’s interests. This will also help limit the number of exchange proposals. Exchanges can only be for two purposes including providing for the proper management, protection, and public use of state lands or for the protection of military facilities. The Sierra Club has opposed most of the past land exchange measures, but we are supporting this proposal because it includes transparency and accountability to ensure that land exchanges are in the best interest of the trust and the larger public. We urge your support of Proposition 110. For more information, visit http://VoteYeson110.com.

We have DPS in Arizona too but they are basically highway patrol, traffic enforcement. I got a ticket from DPS last week. 3 cars were involved so he had to write up three reports and that was far too much work for him so he called backup and 2 DPS officers then wrote up this report. Not even a dent in any of the vehicles by the way.

Thanks for setting me straight. Too late now of course, but could be helpful for others here who have yet to vote. I got distrustful from my cursory reading based on the language of "authorizing the sale or lease of state trust land without auction or advertisement in order to protect military installations and operations." That just seemed like it lacked transparency, making it ripe for corruption. The second part of the proposition is something I would support more but it didn't seem to be the main thrust.

Like I said, cursory reading.

Tomorrow is my last day of work for nearly 2 weeks. Today was a bear since we got new computers and one of the most vital programs I have to use was completely unavailable to me. I got paranoid at one point when I was driving home about getting in a car accident because then some of the work that I had set aside for tomorrow wouldn't be addressed and if they figured out it was me that was supposed to get it taken care of, they'd think I had slacked off in not noting what I was doing for the client and I'd be perceived negatively the way I do others in my department who don't note or follow up on their shit.
Oh, and tomorrow is also the day that the 10 finalists for the ADP film festival are announced. As confident as I was a couple weeks ago, I'm starting to get really anxious about my prospects. Guess I'll know the score in 12 hours.

I heard an awesome piece on NPR this morning. It was basically an op-ed from a former political candidate on the smear ads this campaign season. He came to the conclusion that none of us should vote if we believed everything the smear ads claimed because we would technically be accomplices to criminals.

captncrzy
11-02-2010, 08:00 AM
By the way people, the Doug Ducey smear stuff is real.

I used to work for Cold Stone CHQ. While I was there, the sales people were under immense pressure to open 1,000 stores by 12/31/2005. They did so by adopting the "Starbucks" model (open a bunch of stores and make coffee a daily need-to-have). He failed to realize that ice cream isn't a need-to-have. It's a treat that people will not indulge in every day.

In any case, hundreds and hundreds of franchisees lost their shirts because of the failed business model. (Also, the company almost went broke, which is why they laid off 30% of their CHQ staff at Christmas time 2005--including me. The company was very near to bankruptcy at one point).

I happen to know Ken and Jen Gornall personally (Ken and Jen appear in the anti Ducey ads). Ken and Jen lost everything including their retirement and their home trying to make their business work. They were sold a bag of rotten goods--mainly they were lied to about their location and weren't allowed to back out; they were also lied to about the profitability of stores. They were only given references for the most profitable stores and the sales team used what most would consider to be illegal franchise sales tactics. It's pretty sad what happened to them--and they aren't alone.

Google "failed cold stone franchises" and you'll find tons of information and stories from other franchisees.

Doug Ducey is a super nice guy and a good people-person. But there's a reason that, after the Kahala/Cold Stone merger, he was forced out. Not resigned. Fired.
