also, ROCK BAND SATURDAY!!!

I'm house/dog sitting now through Monday. Luckily I had the smarts to grab a half a bottle of Tequilla on my way out of the house...I will bring it over.

Also, this Sunday is my birthday...will be going out for drinks/dinner before the mc chris show...so maybe around 6pm? Leaning towards 4 Peaks in Tempe, but maybe Oreganos. All are welcome of course, but let me know so I can get a table big enough.

and thanks for grabbing the tequila :thu

Goddamnit, do I need to quit procrastinating. I have a 30 page essay exam to finish up, which is due Saturday (I'm getting certified to teach yoga), and I'm only about half way through. You'd think I would have learned my lesson by now... back to the grind.

That is seriously a lot of words to type. I guess I should feel fortunate i'm getting a community college education and writing a lot less words for my essays. Good luck to you though, hope the words start flowing easy for you. I never would have thought you would have to write a 30 page essay to get a yoga certification.

I.F.A.
06-10-2010, 08:23 PM
^Thanks. :)

It's not a continuous essay - the exam is 17 questions (some of them with several subparts) which each need to be answered in an essay format. So, 1.5-3 pages for each question = about 30 pages. Plus I have to design a series of classes. So, still bad enough, lol.

I'm glad that I did this, but I'm also really glad I'm almost done. The course required 200 hours of in-class training at the ashram (so, 8 hour days, Saturday and Sunday, every other weekend - though it was every weekend for the first month and a half or so) plus at least 20 hours of taking yoga classes outside of the training, a day long meditation session, a 3 day silent retreat (which was awesome), 40 continuous days of doing the same yoga set and meditation (which I have not completed...), and sundry other requirements, since January.

It will be nice to have my weekends back.

Okay, break's over...

Its sounds like you're becoming a monk. I was thinking about a chivinandra class because of the incorporated meditation. What are your thoughts on that particular style, IFA?

Ha, a bit. The style of yoga which I'm training in (Kundalini) is a lot more spiritually oriented than hatha or others (it's associated with American Sikhism, and I'm training at a Sikh ashram - which, the religious aspects really turned me off at first, but after having gained some familiarity with them, the Sikh scriptures really resonate with me - and even then, the religious part isn't really prevalent unless you get into it hardcore - I've been exposed to so much of it because I'm training to teach). There's a lot of meditation, mantra, and breath work which wouldn't be found in a "typical" yoga class. Some of the background philosophy, and lifestyle for those who are fully into it, can be a bit... well, cultish (it's built on Raj yoga, so some of it is philosophically in line with the sutras, but some of it is way out there - which, it started being taught in the U.S. in the 60s, so there are a lot of old hippies still practicing it - and there's also been a lot of controversy surrounding the founder), but the style of yoga is more effective for me than other yogas that I've practiced (mostly hatha and Bikram, though I've studied a bit about Iyengar), so I just do the yoga and take everything else that's said with a grain of salt. I actually find it fascinating because I studied religion in college, and planned to focus in cult studies... Not that I'm knocking it, or even definitively saying that it's a cult... it's just cultish, considering the wackier elements and unquestioning devotion of the lifestylers. And I firmly believe that the yoga itself is effectual, and I'd certainly recommend it to others, wherever it came from and whatever else is associated with it. I guess my relationship to it is slightly complicated.

Aaaaaanyway... I'm not at all familiar with chivinandra - I don't think I've even heard of it. What style of meditation is used?

Dale Graham Took A Liking To A Neighbor’s Vacuum Hose

Payson, Arizona (The Weekly Vice) Dale Graham, a 94-year-old Arizona man, was arrested Thursday after he was allegedly found in another person's garage - masturbating with a vacuum cleaner hose.

According to the Payton Police Department, an investigation began when neighbors complained that Graham was sitting in a garage that did not belong to him, pleasuring himself with a running vacuum cleaner.

Investigators say the arrest followed a three-week investigation into the incident, along with claims he had molested two young children. Graham had contact with young children and inappropriately touched at least two of them. The potential victims' ages range from 8 to 17.

He was arrested without incident on June 3.

I wasn't smart enough to realize what was up. I was in TinyChat and Hannah and Marc were there and kept saying I should take it seriously, pointing me to talk of symptoms, etc. Then when I started to have those symptoms and my face and throat and tongue were getting numb I called my friend.

They gave me a couple percocets is all. It was hilarious trying to swallow them because I could only feel dull, indistinctly in my mouth. I was there maybe 45 minutes then I went and stayed at my friend's house so there'd be people around that might notice if I had further reactions.

the time I got stung, on the toe next to my big toe, my leg got tingly but the toe was dead numb for a full week. but the sting itself was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced.

tingly throat is scary, where'd you get stung? Glad you're ok John.

mountmccabe
06-12-2010, 07:40 PM
Right foot by the little toe.

I was a little intoxicated (not drunk, though) so I was amused by how weird it felt to drink. After I finished the water they gave me I started on the ice; that was awesome because you bite it and it there'd be a lot of spots all over my mouth that stung but it wasn't a full mouth thing like with liquid water.

Then feeling the percocet try to take over against the venom... quite odd.

M Sparks

I was stung in my left buttcheek in bed in the middle of the night while sleeping. The tips of my fingers and toes tingled, as well as my lips and the end of my tongue. And I couldn't sit down for about 24 hours cause it really hurt when anything would touch the sting area on my cheek.

I was kind of freaked out but my wife had been stung the week before so I knew I'd be ok since she was ok. It was definitely hard going back to sleep since it was like 3am by the time we found the scorpion and went back to bed. I definitely feel your pain, John. Very freaky but glad you are ok.

I should be able to pick you up when I'm out of yoga. :) Assuming that I'm coherent enough to drive - I have to be back at the ashram at 4:00 for the morning service, and then drive out to Scottsdale at 9:00 for another full day of class, so I might be slightly delirious by the end of the day. I may be able to stop by (I have to take Taylor over to her friend's house in queen creek) on my way home for a drink or too. We are watching our pennies because of the wedding so I won't be able to stay for long.

I had a dream last night that Marc moved to London to go work in a record store. We decided to go visit him and he was mean to us in the store and wouldn't talk to us. Then Sean showed up and Marc was mean to him too. THEN, Rick decided to go on a job interview and he got a job offer so he decided we were going to move to London. When I asked him how much money it was, he was like 50,000 pounds. I told him that was like $39,000 and he didn't care. Then we moved and Rick broke up with me and I had to sleep outside. Then we were reading the paper and saw that Sean had gone on a cruise to Abu Dhabi and drowned in a boating accident.

It was very weird.

So my man is leaving for a week to see his twin brother in Michigan. I am trying to make some plans to help entertain my mind while he is gone. My sister is in town this weekend which isn't always the case, we have a favorite british pub in Scottsdale and we were thinking of catching some world cup soccer there. I figured why not throw out the invite since I haven't seen most of you since Coachella... So how about it. Around 3 pm, Saturday, British Open Pub, Scottsdale and McDowell. I would love to see you guys. :)

i'm staying at my parents saturday night, but maybe i'll stop by on my way across town :)

I just got sticker shock and ran.

captncrzy
06-22-2010, 03:34 PM
That's probably right. Increased summer traffic (demand) and reduced seat capacity (from last year's fuel crises) = higher ticket prices.

You might be able to find something cheaper but you'll probably have to make a couple of stops.

Edit: Just checked Southwest; you can get a flight for about $225 each way plus taxes. One or two stops required.

There are lots of things to take into consideration when pricing a flight; potential traffic, historical data, direct flights vs stops, the competition, the economic market, destination, the seasons, etc. The economy has improved so much for (for air traffic anyway) that we're probably going to actually post a profit this quarter for the first time in 6 quarters.

https://www.aps.com/svcs/startstopservice.acx

Looks like $25 to turn on service, the rest is a security deposit

https://www.aps.com/main/services/residential/CreditPolicy/ResCreditPolicy_1.html

Deposits

We may require a security deposit when connecting electric service. We may be able to waive the deposit if you have had service with APS within the last 2 years or if you can provide an acceptable letter of credit from your most recent electric service provider from within the last 6 months. Deposit amounts are based on usage from the new address.

The deposit will be retained until you have achieved 12 consecutive months of prompt payment. Once you have established a good payment history, the deposit plus interest will be applied as a credit to your account on the 13th month. If you disconnect service before your deposit is applied, it will be credited to your final bill.

A deposit will earn interest effective with the date it is posted to the account, however, the interest is not paid until the deposit has been on the account for a minimum of 6 months.

If your bill payments are delinquent two or more times in a 12-month period, or your service is disconnected for non-payment, you may be asked to pay a new security deposit of two times your average bill.

locachica73

when i started water service with city of tempe, they took a letter of credit from any major service. i had the cox send them a letter of credit and they waived the deposit. granted water service is much cheaper than electric, so they may have higher qualifications for waiving deposit, but they probably just want proof you pay your bills on time.

I'll be there with some great people. I think the only reason that we are going there is for some sort of burlesque/fire dancing performance that my friend is associated with. We will retreat ASAP if the vibe is overly douchebaggy. Douchebaggy...ahahaahaha.

For those who care but don't read the illegal immigration thread.

An Open Letter to All Artists Boycotting Arizona

As a political activist and 15-year independent concert promoter in Arizona, I feel a deep obligation to speak out about the real world effects of artists boycotting the state in protest of SB 1070, the recent anti-immigration bill passed by the legislature and signed into law by our (unelected) Governor. While I respect the intentions of the artists protesting what they find to be an unjust law, the practical effect of the boycott is resulting in exactly the opposite of their good-willed intentions.

By not performing in Arizona, artists are harming the very people and places that foster free speech and the open exchange of ideas that serve to counter the closed-mindedness recently displayed by the new law. The people who will feel the negative effects of the boycott the deepest are local concert venues, including non-profit art house theaters, independent promoters, motivated fans, and the hundreds of people employed in the local music business. If the boycott continues, it is all but guaranteed that some of these venues will be forced to close their doors.

Think of it this way: What if otherwise outspoken and inspirational activists like Martin Luther King, Jr. had turned their backs on the State of Alabama and its citizens because they didn't agree with the discriminatory practices of its government during the critical years of the civil rights movement? What would have happened if they had chosen to boycott Alabama rather than speak out, organize, and effect change?

We are faced with a similar situation in Arizona today. The legislators currently in office don't care if outspoken artists boycott the state. The people responsible for SB 1070 don't want you here. They don't want your voices heard. And as a result of the boycott, they are the only ones who benefit. In effect, the decision to boycott is playing right into their hands.

As Curtis McCrary, the general manager of the non-profit Rialto Theatre in Tucson recently stated, "The individuals and organizations behind this bill are...more than likely delighted about the prospect of politically vocal artists canceling shows - silencing themselves rather than using the platform their status as artists gives them to speak out against SB 1070."

The truth is, a boycott is an easy gesture that doesn't require much more than a statement and removing a date from your tour schedule. However, if you truly care about the effects of the controversial immigration law that was passed, this is an opportunity to use your unique position as an artist with the ability to reach thousands of people to inspire, educate, and motivate your fans to actively be a part of the change.

I have felt and seen the effects of what artists can do to change peoples' lives individually and as a whole. In this important midterm election year, it is imperative that the voters are organized and prepared to express their views about the recent law at the voting booths in November. Every concert venue and promoter in the state would be happy to help coordinate voter registration drives and set up information booths in connection with concerts. Many of us are already planning specific events, including rallies and benefit concerts, designed to educate and encourage local music lovers to get involved at this crucial time.

This open letter is a call out to all artists to come take a stand and perform in Arizona. We need you now more than ever.

If you are interested in exploring ways to help us, including voter outreach and organizing with local non-profits, or you just want more information, please feel free to contact me at charlie@statesidepresents.com.

First Friday isn't canceled (http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/jackalope/2010/06/first_friday_is_happening_desp.php) - they just won't have vendors (which would actually inspire me to attend for a change, if I didn't already have a yoga workshop to go to).

Of course, this does mean that the only activity option available if one choses to attend is to stand around and... look at art... novel.*

*Don't mind my snark. FF irritates me. I don't like the carnival atmosphere which has arisen at the expense of the art (imo), which is what it's supposed to be about. As my friend, and local artist, Wayne has put it,

""First Friday is dedicated to bringing together artists, the public, and businesses for a greater understanding, appreciation, and promotion of the arts and the development of a strong and vital downtown Phoenix arts community."

Sounds nice, doesn't it?
It isn't.

On any typical FF, the streets of Downtown Phoenix are full of: drunken idiots, lousy DJ's (The exception being DJ Gentrification- you rock, Alex.), untalented street musicians, amateur art critics, hipsters, scenesters, yuppies and until recently- street vendors selling everything from kitschy craft projects to homemade jewelry."

Now, he's quite bitter, and I wouldn't decry FF with quite as much elitist artist vitriol as he, and mind you, he wrote this a couple of years ago, after "Black Friday" and before they started shutting down the streets and issuing vendor permits (at which point, FF hadn't reached the critical mass that it has now). I think it is much more accurate now than it was when he wrote this.

When I do go, I pretty much stick to Grand. Though, since most of my favorite galleries on Grand have closed (or moved to Roosevelt a la Perihilion... sigh), there's not a whole lot of incentive for me to go anymore. I'll still go out once in a while, but I never stick around very long... the crowds are too much for me.

I keep meaning to check out 3d Fridays, but it seems like I always have something going on.

Based on your notes above you would certainly be all about 3rd Fridays. The crowd isn't as big and there's really not at all the street carnival atmosphere. And as such among those that do make it down there are more people taking notes on the pieces than people ignoring the art.
