You mean Coachella 2010? They played it at Coachella 2008 which was just a few days after that terrible Tempe Marketplace performance.

I also got to see MGMT play Kids at the Rhythm Room when they opened for Yeasayer in early '08. That performance was definitely not terrible. And worth the $9 ticket.

...but enough with the MGMT talk!

Yeah... let's get back to more important things, like how awesome the late night sets are for Bonnaroo this year.

The Black Keys

Daryl Hall & Chromeo

I went and saw the new Disney nature doc Oceans with Ivy's friend Amy last night. It was really good. I recommend seeing it before it leaves the theaters.

I also went and grabbed a few Ed Sharpe tickets yesterday. Tempe Zia is sold out, so if you're thinking about going get your tickets now because they'll probably sell out soon.

I am planning on doing some sort of First Friday reveling and then going up to Joe's Grotto to see Gomi and Via Vengeance and other such rock/metal bands.

Joe's Grotto is on 32nd St just North of Thunderbird. I've talked about Gomi before - think Local H - and I've reviewed Via Vengeance before - one man metal band; he opened for Jesu/Wolves in the Throne Room years back - and it should be great.

The show time is listed as 8 pm; I'd like to be there by 9 pm.

Because apparently it is its own RockStar Energy Drink Tour mini-festival.

Day 2 sounds like something we might be interested in.

Weezer, Sublime With Rome, Primus, DEVO, Blue October and 3 more TBA's

Looks like presales tickets start tomorrow. Dropping more money on Fall music is gonna be a tad painful after spending so much on The Wall today.

I find it pretty funny that some of the same people that are supporting SB1070 are posting on facebook " who's going out for cinco de mayo tonight!? "

Fail

I think there are a lot of people who support SB1070 but also like legal Mexicans. In fact I know of many legal mexicans who dislike illegal mexicans for cheating a system they had to go through. There are so many different sides and allegiences to this issue. As much as i'm against this bill and see the potential dangers of it, i'm no longer outraged at those who think otherwise.

The one stat that does seem to poke holes in many of their arguments is the recent report that illegal immigration increased in Arizona while violent crimes went down 35%. Most of those I discuss this topic with are always posting the gory details of the drug and gang violence. Another important difference that gets lost in this debate is the difference between those involved in the drug and gang violence and those who come here and lay low so they can stay here.

Supposedly Phoenix is the kidnapping capitol of the US. You hear it from all different sources. I am a Phoenix native and have many acquaintances here in the Phoenix-area. In my 32 years of life I personally do not know anyone that has been kidnapped or has been the victim of an attempted kidnapping. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but I think this is fear mongering. Can anyone help me refute this statement? I'm sick of people using this as one of the justifications for passing 1070, and I personally think the whole kidnapping issue is bogus.

I can't. Phoenix is actually the number two city in the world for kidnapping just behind Mexico City. I think it's an actual fact that you will have a hard time refuting. You probably haven't seen it because you are white and probably don't hang out with many drugs smugglers or mexican gangs. I haven't seen it either but I don't doubt the stats.

I mean, if they are counting the drop houses where the coyotes are keeping their clients until payment is completed that's one thing. But I think people are getting this image of little kids getting swiped off every street corner and that's just not the case.

...haha, one of the last paragraphs in the article posted above talks about a 14 year old girl getting snatched off the corner, zing!

faxman75
05-05-2010, 01:21 PM
The article does point out that it's mostly illegal on illegal kidnappings but it does spill over as the example at the end of it points out. The fact of the matter is as long as there are dangerous terrorists (that's what I think these monsters are at least) in our state illegally and so many we can't even get a handle on them, it's going to be hard to shoot down any laws the state makes about legals. Most people don't know the difference between the gang/drug smuggler/kidnapper/cop shooting torturers and the guys standing outside of Home Depot or working construction to keep a familiy together. I have had many a dinner with illegal immigrants who had a regular middle class house, spoke a little english and were the furthest thing from criminals. Connor had a best friend whose parents were hear illegally. The problem is they all get lumped together and the whole word "illegal" is what will keep it that way.

Even John McCain didn't differentiate when he made his most recent flip flop and decided to support this state law. He said this law was a necessity because of the violence at the border and through the corridors. This law doesn't do anything to have effect on that violence but our media is doing a poor job of explaining it well and our politicians are being liars and deceptive as usual.

sin213
05-05-2010, 01:24 PM
this happens in every large city in america....we just happen to be "new/up and coming" news and we share a border with Mexico which highlights the issue.

faxman75
05-05-2010, 01:31 PM
You can always battle back with the fact that Arizona isn't even in the top 5 states with the largest illegal population in the country. We are all the way down at number 8 so couple that with the fact that violent crimes have gone down while the illegal population has increased and you have a solid starting point to dispute the argument that illegals = increase in violent crime.

The pointed counter I've heard to this is that since the kids are so important their funding should've been in the budget already. If our legislators really wanted to give us a reasonable choice towards fiscal responsibility they would've had something more discretionary depend on voters approving the sales tax increase.

I'm going to vote yes for the funding but I do feel a little cheated & wish I could vote no to help end these tactics.

but phoenix people, i have a bunch of coachella 2006 promotion posters i found whilst cleaning. if i haven't already given one and you want it, please let me know. they're smaller than the ones you buy though, i learned that the hard way. i don't want to mail them, but if you want to meet-up or swing by and pick one up some time, hollatchasaur.

and i will be at the phoenix symphony during the first friday shennanigans.

Hey, thanks! Heliogoland is great. I don't understand people's dislike for it.. They changed me a bit that year.. I went to see Tool, D Mode and Oakenfold.. Left a Massive Attack desciple, a big fan of Daft Punk and TV on the Radio. And Decided I wouldn't miss another Coachella.

I'm guessing Gogol will be back in AZ this fall. In fact, I wrote the band telling them that we need them to play here now more than ever. Multi-culti underdog world strike!

yeah, no joke. i was saying the same thing...that they need to come here more than ever now. and play multiple shows/rallies/demonstrations, etc to get people rallied around fighting that bill.

and showing people that not everyone that lives in AZ is a racist prick with their head up their ass.

i wonder if we're getting skipped cause of the immigration law. we're getting boycotted all over...why not shows too. i also think that is the reason gogol isn't coming thru here. they have a huge blurb on their site about AZ and that law and how wrong it is...

It's possible. I would imagine that if anyone on the bill were to boycott AZ, it would be Deftones. Considering Chino and Steph are Hispanic.

Had a good weekend... got to see the Beatles symphony with Ivy and her friend Amy. Most of it was good, I could have done without the Blood, Sweat, and Tears songs though...

My mom is a Dbacks fan so I took her to the Dbacks game yesterday for mom's day, and then they lost... Stupid Dbacks.

Watched the Triplets of Belleville with Ivy's friend Amy last night. I had never seen it. It was awesome, great animation and music. Those French animators are crazy! I also loved how there wasn't much dialog. I should have watched it years ago but had never gotten around to it.

New Dead Weather album comes out tomorrow and new Black Keys album comes out next Tuesday. Sweetness! I will be looking forward to seeing both of them again at an upcoming festival that should not be named...

Last but not least. I got tickets for LCD's show in Pomona on 6/5. Holla! Rick and Jenn, are you guys going to the L.A. show or the Pomona show? Anyone else checking out the LCD shows in Cali?

Save for the grilled cheese, the food at The Main Ingredient is nothing special but they have some pretty good beers on draft. Out of the eight or so taps, at least four of them are AZ brews and there's prolly twenty or so microbrews in bottles. All booze is half-price before 6 pm daily and all day Monday. Pretty much nailed it. It's a pretty easy meal to make. I figure since he isn't doing well in school and he doesn't exactly lose any of his priviliges when he's with mom, then I need to play bad guy in a productive an encouraging way. So when he comes over on Friday nights he no longer gets to play any violent video games, watch any WWE or violence on tv, no allowance, no more movies at the theater (ironman2 was the last) less time in front of the tv in general, and some simple chores like walking the dog and taking out trash. In place of the hundreds of pointless hours in front of the tv I now offer him a bit of a schedule. For instance cooking and reading for an hour every Saturday morning and we follow that up with outdoor activities like football, baseball and soccer at the park. That TV is poison for his mind.

Informal and quick poll.

for internet: do you use Cox or Qwest or something else?

I am considering firing Qwest in favor of Cox. In FH Qwest is really slow (reported max spd 3 Mbps; reality is closer to 500K) and as we have multiple users routing through the same pipe it can be tiresome.

opinions?

cox. no internet problems whatsoever. i use the mid-level service i think. "preferred" maybe? my old roommate had the premium kind where you get special techies to come out and fix shit very quickly. that was really cool, but way overkill for me living by myself.

I'd do it. I've had Qwest in the past and currently have Cox and the connection seems to be much faster, smoother and less glitchy. I've had no problems with Cox and if internet conncection is a priority to you there are package upgrades for that.

This is my exact logic. I used Qwest about 9 years ago and never went back. I have been using Cox for internet ever since and they are solid and it's super fast. I don't feel the same way about their cable service. For our set up Cox would cost double what I pay directv.

If I had a choice between Cox and no internet, I'd pick no internet.

But once you try Cox, there's no going back.

Where I am now is Cox.

8.35 Mb/s Down
2.65 Mb/s Up

from that same site Paul used.

On my phone (that is over the wireless) using Xtremelabs Speedtest

6.049 Mb/s Up
0.646 Mb/s Down

Also this is my parents' house; they had some issues with their service going down entirely for a short period of time (hours to a day or so) but they call, complain and get a free month. I think Cox were upgrading the system and that was causing the issues.

Tomorrow we vote for Prop 100.

Text of Arizona Proposition 100

OFFICIAL TITLE
SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1001
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF ARIZONA; AMENDING ARTICLE IX, CONSTITUTION OF ARIZONA, BY ADDING SECTION 12.1; RELATING TO TEMPORARY TRANSACTION PRIVILEGE AND USE TAXES.
TEXT OF PROPOSED AMENDMENT
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:
1. Article IX, Constitution of Arizona, is proposed to be amended by adding section 12.1 as follows if approved by the voters and on proclamation of the Governor:
12.1. Temporary taxes; repeal from and after May 31, 2013
SECTION 12.1. A. A TEMPORARY TAX IS LEVIED FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAISING STATE REVENUES FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND PUBLIC SAFETY.
B. THE TEMPORARY TAX IS LEVIED AND SHALL BE COLLECTED BEGINNING ON JUNE 1, 2010 AND SHALL CONTINUE FOR THIRTY-SIX CONSECUTIVE CALENDAR MONTHS, AFTER WHICH THE TEMPORARY TAX IS REPEALED.
C. THE TEMPORARY TAX IS LEVIED AS A SEPARATE RATE INCREMENT IN ADDITION TO THE STATE TRANSACTION PRIVILEGE TAX RATES AND THE USE TAX RATE. THE RATE OF THE TEMPORARY TAX IS ONE PER CENT OF THE TAX BASE FOR EACH TRANSACTION PRIVILEGE CLASSIFICATION THAT IS SUBJECT TO A RATE OF FIVE PER CENT OR MORE AND ONE PER CENT OF THE TAX BASE FOR THE USE TAX.
D. THE TEMPORARY TAX IS SUBJECT TO THE SAME EXEMPTIONS, DEDUCTIONS AND EXCLUSIONS AS PROVIDED BY LAW FOR EACH TRANSACTION PRIVILEGE TAX CLASSIFICATION AND FOR THE USE TAX.
E. THE NET REVENUES DERIVED FROM THE TEMPORARY TAX IMPOSED BY THIS SECTION ARE NOT SUBJECT TO DISTRIBUTION TO COUNTIES, MUNICIPALITIES OR OTHER GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES BUT SHALL BE CREDITED TO, AND SEPARATELY ACCOUNTED IN, THE STATE GENERAL FUND AND APPROPRIATED AS FOLLOWS:
1. TWO-THIRDS OF THE REVENUES SHALL BE APPROPRIATED FOR PUBLIC PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION.
2. ONE-THIRD OF THE REVENUES SHALL BE APPROPRIATED FOR HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND PUBLIC SAFETY PURPOSES.
F. THE TEMPORARY TAXES UNDER THIS SECTION ARE DUE AND PAYABLE AT THE SAME TIME AND IN THE SAME MANNER, AND ARE SUBJECT TO THE SAME PROVISIONS FOR ADMINISTRATION AND ENFORCEMENT, AS PROVIDED BY LAW FOR OTHER TRANSACTION PRIVILEGE AND USE TAXES.
G. THE REPEAL OF THE TEMPORARY TAX UNDER THIS SECTION DOES NOT AFFECT THE CONTINUING VALIDITY OF OUTSTANDING AND UNPAID TAX OBLIGATIONS THAT ACCRUE UNDER THIS SECTION, INCLUDING ANY PENALTIES AND INTEREST THAT ACCRUE THEREAFTER BY LAW ON THE UNPAID OBLIGATIONS.
H. THE TEMPORARY TAX UNDER THIS SECTION IS REPEALED FROM AND AFTER MAY 31, 2013.
2. The Secretary of State shall submit this proposition to the voters at a special election called to be held for that purpose on May 18, 2010 as provided by article XXI, Constitution of Arizona.
ANALYSIS BY LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
Beginning June 1, 2010, Proposition 100 would amend the Arizona Constitution to temporarily increase the state transaction privilege and use taxes ("state sales tax") by one cent per one dollar for three years. For most purchases, the state sales tax would increase from the current 5.6 cents per one dollar to 6.6 cents per one dollar. The monies collected from the temporary tax would be separately accounted for in the state general fund and would be allocated as follows:
1. Two-thirds would be appropriated for public primary and secondary education.
2. One-third would be appropriated for health and human services and public safety purposes.
Under Proposition 100, the temporary tax would be administered and enforced in the same manner as the existing state sales tax and would be subject to the same exemptions, deductions and exclusions as the existing state sales tax, except that the current distribution to cities and counties of a portion of the existing state sales tax would not include any temporary tax revenue.
The temporary tax is repealed on May 31, 2013.
FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT
State law requires the Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC) Staff to prepare a summary of the fiscal impact of Proposition 100. Beginning June 1, 2010, Proposition 100 would amend the Arizona Constitution to temporarily increase the state transaction privilege and use taxes ("state sales tax") by one cent per one dollar for three years.
Proposition 100 is projected to increase state sales tax revenues by $918 million in the first year. The proposition is projected to increase state sales tax revenues by $968 million in the second year and $1.06 billion in the third year.

The headline on the Arizona Republic this morning is "Voters Hike Taxes." Is it just me or does the word "hike" seem a little inappropriate considering it's only a 1 cent per dollar increase?

1 cent on the dollar is actually pretty massive for a sales tax increase. In Flagstaff, we would vote to raise sales tax all the time for specific things, and it would always be like .163 cents on the dollar or something like that. I think in 20 years of small tax increases, MAYBE it went up a cent. To do it all at once is pretty big.
